Palin To Go On Attack Against Biden On ... Foreign Policy?

Be afraid. Be very, very afraid:

Sarah Palin plans to go on the attack in tonight's debate, hitting Joe Biden for what she will call his foreign policy blunders and penchant for adopting liberal positions on taxes and other issues, according to campaign officials involved in prepping her for tonight's showdown.

Palin attacking Biden, the longtime chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and a well-known figure in world capitals, on foreign policy?

That should be interesting. Maybe she can attack over Obama's suggestion that he'd chase terrorists into Pakistan or tout the successes of the Bush Doctrine...well, maybe those aren't such hot ideas, come to think of it.

Here's a thought. Maybe Palin can hit Biden with the charge that he has never run a state where spy-planes take off in the direction of Russia?

Late Update: In all seriousness, it looks like the Palin team hopes to compensate for her yawning gap of foreign policy knowledge by trying to draw Biden into a dogfight and thus diminish him. According to the report linked above, Biden is planning on sticking to a prosecutorial, just-the-facts approach.

Either way, Palin's most basic task tonight is merely to project even an elementary level of competence, something that's eluded her so far, and it remains to be seen if going toe to toe with Biden on foreign policy is a good way to do that.

O could the little baby jebus possibly love me this much?

As an early christmas present would it be too much to ask for the words "Keating Five" from dear Uncle Joe tonight? After all without McCain-it would be the "Keating Four."

Think she'd even know what "Keating Five" refers to??

She was in second grade when they put out their Mersey beat hit "Mad all Over."

Comment of the day!

Only if you are old enough at least to remember when Dennis Miller was funny. (Young enough to be
McCain' son and Willow's great uncle.)

Yeah I hear The Keating Five are coming out with a greatest hits album this November featuring the hit "Don't It Make My Red States Blue." Can't wait! Just in time for President Obamas inauguration speech...

I knew it was a plot when they were picked to open at the debate tonight! They only make more money if Obama is inaugurated. Damn that English invasion to hell.

Every time Palin goes on one of her snarky rants about Biden/Barack's record tonight Joe should simply reply - "Keating 5" The best thing that could happen would be for the 50 million people that watch tonight to google "keating 5" tommorrow!

Many will be McCain supporters who cannot Google due to their war injuries. Many more will be disappointed that the Keating Five do not have a MySpace page and it will backfire on Biden.

Ricky-ok you win!!!!!!I am overestimating the viewing public...Hey whats the difference between a pit bull and Joe Biden - opposable thumbs, logical thinking, intelligence and experience

Damn, Tena - beat me to it. :-)

Please oh great Flying Spaghetti Monster, let it be true!

user-pic

Jiminy cricket! It's consistent, I guess, with the Rove doctrine (does she know that?) of attacking your opponent's strengths.

Seems like a stupid idea to me. You can't cram for this kind of attack, even though some Republican analyst (Bay Buchanan, I believe) said last night that facts and figures weren't really all that important.

God help us.

Well, Palin believes that herself:

On April 18, 2006, Palin and I sat together in a hotel coffee shop comparing campaign trail notes. As we talked about the debates, Palin made a comment that highlights the phenomenon that Biden is up against.

"Andrew, I watch you at these debates with no notes, no papers and yet when asked questions you spout off facts, figures and policies and I'm amazed. But then I look out into the audience and I ask myself, 'Does any of this really matter?' " Palin said.

This is a woman who has gotten by on nothing but her looks and what some people seem to take for "charm".

Actually I think this is a pretty good idea. If you've ever tried to argue with some loud-mouthed, know-nothing Republican coming at you with ridiculous comments like ... oh, I don't know, pick one: "Obama wants to give civil rights to terrorists" ... you know how difficult and infuriating it can be. You just KNOW there's a perfect witty comeback, but you can't always find it on the spur of the moment.

This is something Palin ought to be good at. Maybe her handlers have thought up some new, breathtakingly crude and dishonest lines of attack, just for this occasion. The goal would be to leave Biden open-mouthed at such craven tactics, groping for words, unsure even whether to dignify this kind of idiocy with a response. Kind of like John Kerry was blindsided by the Swift Boat attacks and couldn't quite figure out how to handle it.

I hope Biden's got some grand strategy for dealing with this kind of trickery. Like maybe he's been practicing a look of gentle, dignified forbearance or something.

Let me guess---Palin to attack Biden on his tripartite solution for Iraq? Can she even pronounce tripartite? Maybe she'll say "three-state" just to make it easier.

This is actually a very good line of attack for Palin. Get Biden defending again his 3-state solution to Iraq. It was nonsense then and is nonsense now. You noticed he hasn't been promoting it recently. But If Obama is trying to rely on Biden to shore up his foreign policy credentials, this is a good way to undermine those credentials.

Plus in the run-up to the Iraq War, Biden kept saying to the adminstration that he was "with them." that he wanted to be "their partners." He was never ever opposed to the action. He just wanted it done the right way.

This will draw a wedge between Biden and Obama.

Don't know if Palin has the chops at all to exploit this stuff -- I would guess not -- but the right person could have a field day with this stuff.

Yup, yup, there's the tripartite Iraq issuse. Also, he voted against GHW Bush's war with Iraq and voted for GW Bush's war with Iraq. Those are the issues I've heard she plans to bring up.

I think the plan is obvious: she's going to try and rattle Biden into a moment of anger. They're planning to "win" the debate by drawing Biden into a gaffe, since they obviously can't win it on Palin's own foreign policy cred.

Of course, this plan hinges on Palin's ability to speak English. Aye, there's the rub...

user-pic

Dude - I think Biden could turn red and yell You have to be fucking kidding me! And most America would applaud.

Word.

Be advised many Republicans already think he turned red before he entered the Senate (back when Palin was nine years old and in the second grade)

Politico and The Page reporting that McCain is pulling out of Michigan!!!!

http://thepage.time.com/

Probably moving it to Pennsylvania. Which is pretty much their only hope at this point, concentrating resources in either MI or PA and hammering it hard.

Pennsylvania is deader than Julius Caesar to McCain.

Virginia - or maybe WI, or maybe both - would be a better bet.

I don't trust them. I mean the McCain camp. Not that it matters, but there decisions have no consistency, no logic or no truth.

By the way, I just had the vision of Mittens with a sadistic smirk.

McCain-Palin have already canceled a MI rally later in the month and look to put their energies on WI (yeah right) OH and FL according to the sources.

Huge in that Michigan was the target of the McCain camp to flip. Now it seems he's going completely on the defensive. The Politico article states that he's moving the staff from Michigan to Ohio, Wisconsin and Florida.

Obama has been in Michigan a lot recently, and I commented that maybe his internal polls were showing it was a toss-up, however given this news, I guess he saw he was close to locking it up and wanted to seal the deal there.

If McCain moves out, it allows Obama to move out as well (though still keep a presence), meaning he can move his staff and ads elsewhere as well.

It definitely allows the unions to concentrate on Ohio.

user-pic

Really?

LMAO!

Retreat! Cut and run everybody!

No victory with honor in Michigan.

user-pic

And even better, this is discouraging for McCain supporters. I remember how I felt in 2004 when I learned Kerry was pulling out of certain states. Completely bummed.

McCain to Michigan: "Time to cut 'n' run!"

Alright. I'm completely confused. I thought it was decided during the primaries that Michigan was not going to vote for Obama because they were disenfranchised?

No, that was decided at the PUMA tea party -- only they couldn't officially vote on it because they didn't have a quorum. Or trifle.

user-pic

Should be interesting. Bring the popcorn.

Politico is saying that McCain is pulling out of Michigan to focus on Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Florida.

I suspect that the polls showing that Obama is ahead in Florida are real thus McCain resources are going there.

There's gotta be more to this than meets the eye; classic Rovian "hitting your opponent where they're strongest."

But if it's true that Biden intends to ignore Palin and focus on McCain I'm not sure if going after Biden on a threshold he's already passed is the best use of 90 minutes time.

user-pic
There's gotta be more to this than meets the eye

No. There. Does. Not.

When have they been all sneaky and foxy and shifty so far? They don't have mental wherewithal to pull of anything - what happened when he pretend-suspended his campaign?

I don't think they have anything else to work with at this point. They're not stupid enough to think she could actually win a debate with him on her own merits. This country's a real mess....cutsey, country charm just ain't going to cut it.

user-pic

Like negativity has helped these folks...

Say whaaaaat? This is going to be fun!

I'd fire right back and say that she said last year she hasnt payed much attention to Iraq, so she doesnt have the legs to stand on the attack.

I bow to your avatar.

Or, more likely, she's going to tie foreign policy into energy policy. It's the only angle she has and it's an area where Joe Biden isn't particularly well-versed.

My inner avatar says this is part of my strategy of going after an opponents strength. I learned it by going to as many colleges as sweet Sister Sarah and I didn't even have to get my degree.

"Penchant". I love that.

I bet they are thinking that Biden won't go on the attack himself b/c it'll only make him look "mean and sexist". Is the attack tactic even working for them anyway?

user-pic

NOPE!

My inner avatar says this is part of my strategy of going after an opponents strength. I learned it by going to as many colleges as sweet Sister Sarah and I didn't even have to get my degree.

This is me repeating myself. Did I tell you we are avoiding domestic policy because Alaska is too far from the rest of the United States for her to know anything about it?

user-pic

You're right - there's no way they could prep her with enough information on domestic issues -

Foreign affairs can be more narrowly dealt with. You just hit regions, basically. She won't know any history behind anything - but she can vomit answers - when she remembers, like she did while talking to Katie about the economy and in the middle of ramble suddenly stopped dead, said "Oh! And jobs! It's all about jobs!" Cause she just that second remembered what they'd told her.

I don't know. Jos falls under the umbrella of job creation in the great history of our country, Tena. Ask all your hip handymen.

user-pic

I am sure that Biden has prepared for that. I am sure he as prepared for Palin throwing his gaffes in face. I am sure that he will answer and pivot and attack McCain every time.

That's how I would handle it.

Maybe Palin knows something we don't know, and that's why she's going on the attack. No, that's probably not it.

I think this is a head fake in an attempt to throw Biden off. McShame himself would be cautious to attack Biden on this front. Rove tactics aren't working so well this election and I doubt he has the ear of the campaign staff right now.

I hate it when my fat inner avatar displays low self esteem. I have the correct math. Everyone knows we are Bush's brain. Our legacy is secure.

There's a certain logic here actually.

Going on the offensive means memorizing a certain number of attack points and delivering them.

Holding her own in response requires being prepared over a much wider potential range of issues.

What a complete JOKE! Can someone tell Caribou Barbie to go back to her trailer in Alaska to keep an eye on Putin's head....

These guys arent smart enough to have a coherent strategy.... ALL BULLSHIT happhazard tactics...

Biden just needs to answer the questions with substance and provide a clear contrast to this idiot... Ignore her and BUST McCain in the MOUTH on the ECONOMY!!!!!!!!!!!

Game over. Lights Out. Fat lady sings. etc.etc.etc..

Of course. It's the same thing Dan Quayle did. Attack, attack, attack. Biden should just tie everything back to McCain, hammer McCain, and completely - I mean COMPLETELY - ignore Palin.

Here is bit of quick fun for you.

Test your knowledge of Sarah Palin.

Ten multiple choice questions.

It is very funny,

http://politicalhumor.about.com/library/bl-palin-quiz.htm

Your score is 100%. You now understand why the two most frightening words in the English language may be "President Palin."

I'm not frightened.

I'm scared shitless!

user-pic

If you get zero, it says "Your score is 0%. Your lack of knowledge is so staggering, it's a wonder John McCain didn't pick you to be his running mate."

I got the same score and have the exact same reaction!

user-pic

I'm thinking back to Steve Schmidt saying this election was going to be about personalities, rather than the issues. Wonder if he still wants it that way?

I hope Biden is practicing the phrase, "With all due respect Governor Palin . . ." It could take him far tonight.

lol... That was beautiful.

Biden shouldn't respond by saying she has no idea what she is talking about but he should make everyone see that she doesn't have any idea what she is talking about. If she attacks then respond and force her to answer something related to the topic and since all she knows is the attack she will fall flat. Kind of like her interviews.

In her interviews she gives her scripted "answer" to the question but if she is asked a follow up to that question then she doesn't know how to respond.

user-pic

Joe has a reputation for not suffering fools. Need I say more.

Just curious: has Biden repeated his "I made a mistake on AMFAIR" admission recently?

One has to imagine that they've resorted to a very simple formula for her.

"Sarah, when you hear _______ you say _______."

Then they give her a stack of 3 by 5 index cards (high school style) to memorize.

She doesn't have to understand anything -- just repeat talking points, act the bulldog and smile charmingly at the zingers she memorizes.

Her challenge is to ensure that the talking points are actually aligned with the question that Ifil asked.

user-pic

Palin offers nothing but nonresponsive talking points. Which is why I'd love to hear Biden begin every response like so:

"To answer your question, Gwen..."

They're not going to let her use index cards are they? If so, they might as well let her use a teleprompter!

He absolutely, positively should stick with the approached described above. There's nothing to be gained by getting into a gutter fight with her. She has no command of the facts or ideas of the issues, and when prodded just a little, she'll hang herself with her own ignorance. That's all that's needed.

On at least one question; Biden should give Palin a multiple choice question for rejoinder ie:

In the response to Iraq you just answered Guvnah, which would you choose:

A. stay for a 100 years
B. stay for 10 years
c. or stay there forever at a cost of 10 Billion a month?

Or a true false:
In regards to the economy; what would be your response Govunah ?

Our economy is strong and we are facing a possible depression?

True or false!

user-pic

Look - I was just talking to the guy who is roofing my shed. He's not a hip Taos handyman - he's a middle aged Latino.

He left me with this today: O my god, it's terrible what's happening. Obama better win this election!

user-pic

Same thing my exerminator, Marcus Montoya, said on Monday.

I am curious why one would begin with the disclaimer that the guy roofing your shed is "not a hip Taos handyman." Do you think we remember your lamentation is a post earlier today on another thread that you had never been polled?

Just kidding. Somebody has to fill in for Fogu2.

Something tells me he'll be back with a new alias and avatar.

user-pic

Well duh on me.

LOL!

user-pic

No - it's just that people who are familiar with Taos will understand what I'm saying - this area is full of hip, liberal people.

My roofer is just one of the people, on the other hand.

I've read John Nichols. I've visited Taos. My sister lived on a lot once owned by Don Rumsfeld.
Hip handymen are people too!

Even hipless handy-persons are person...lol

user-pic

LOL!! Well you shouldn't tease me then - I was an only child; I don't always get it.

OF course they're people too - what am I, chopped liver?

Naah just that you don't like people without hips.

Many sexists avoid polling those without hips.
We know Tena is liberal and in Taos, so that cannot explain this. However, as soon as someone without hips in Taos is polled, be prepared for Chris Matthews to lament that Obama cannot connect with the hipless hippies in Hispanola America despite having months to close the deal.

I was thinkin' Taos was some country in Asia I forgotted to learn about . . . .

That was before the Tsunami moved it to Alaskan airspace, my friends.

You are too funny!!

I enjoy all your comments, but this one made me cry from laughter. Just the visual of baby jeebus doing debate prep with Sarah.

BDH- Your absolutley right. Use that phrase to bridge where McCains policies differ than her answers. Force her to defend McCains positions and highlight how clueless she really is..

Going on the offensive puts the focus on Biden and forces him to defend himself rather than going on the offensive against Palin. Also as has been mentioned, they're trying to rile him up and get him to explode to which they'll call sexism or intimidation or that he'll gaffe. Remember he's said in the past that he lies(exaggerates) when he's challenged and riled up.

However I was under the assumption that the debate set-up didn't really allow for a back and forth.

I hope Biden just shakes her hand at the beginning and end of the debate and doesn't go in for the cheek smooch. She'll probably have a big show if he does go in for the smooch.

user-pic

She can attack. But he doesn't need to let that derail him one bit. He just goes right on the offensive against mcShame.

Biden should be very respectful, like Obama was toward McCain, always look toward Palin when she is speaking, and look at her when he is speaking.

He should not try to rebut her. He should build all his replies around attacking John McCain, on every issue that Palin brings up.

McCain is the top of the ticket. Biden should keep on attacking him, and never try to engage Palin on her terms. That way he might lure her into having to speak in defense of McCain, and that is where her lack of knowledge will get exposed, and she will be far more likely to say something completely stupid.

user-pic

The tactic could work. Biden won't be able to complain to the moderator if Palin is throwing bomb after bomb. That will make him look weak. In any event the Republicans have neutralized Ifill. She will not be able to act as a fair referee. That means Biden will have to defend himself from Palin's attacks. Joe might find them annoying and will be tempted to "pull rank" on her. If he does so, he loses. The tactic gives Palin a good shot at surviving and possibly winning.

I agree that McCain is the target of opportunity Biden needs to attack. However, a few personal smack-downs directed at Palin , when appropriate, on Troopergate, secret e-mails and the cronyism she brought in with her governorship in Alaska should put her in her place.

Wait, according to the right wing blogs, Marcus Montoya's mother asked you not to mention his service as an exterminator.

Jonze is right. Please Joe don't go in for the SMOOCH!!!!!!! Or call her SWEETIE.... They can make all the mistakes in the world and still have a chance... We're playing with a Black guy on the team and In America a brotha can't afford to make 1 mistake....

I know the comment was probably useful to the discussion but i had to get it out...Sorry.

user-pic

I am absolutely sure that Biden has prepared for Palin attacking him. I am sure that he will take everything she says and pivots towards attacking McCain.

iam still tryin to figure why was mcbush campaignin in iowa the other day knownin thats the same that Barack where he is right now!!!

Let's make no mistake, Palin will be ready.
She'll be folksy, smile when she's being mean, will attack Obama & Biden on their positions/and flip-flops, have her talking points and zingers down, and will deflect questions and say things like "I wonder why Senator Biden didn't do that? Gosh, he's been in the senate a long enough time. In my home state of Alaska, the people expect us to do things in the first term. I guess when you're a senator the people don't expect you to do that much and Senator Biden seems happy with not doing much."

oilbama oops i got caught up in a dumbass bil c moment i mean obama,i really think if obama wanna bolstered his foreign policy experience he should take an OVERSEAS trip to alaska for at least 5 days!!!

i take it they've decided to try and bait joe into talking down to her, by going after him on a field he'd be hard pressed not to show mastery over, and thus appear condescending. interesting.

user-pic

Everyone calm down.

Palin could deliver every fucking answer and make sense and it still wouldn't erase all the stupid.

And Palin will not deliver every fucking answer or make any sense.

When has she?

It's very simple- Don't. Take. The. Bait.

Unless Gwen says to Biden "I'm stopping this debate unless you rebut what that bimbo just said about you", Biden should stick to the talking points, talk only about McCain and be as straight-faced as possible.

Palin is the one who needs to come out the winner here. Another draw and it's a victory for Obama/Biden.

I cannot wait to see this debate.

LOL! Oh, please let Gwen say that!

One final piece of advice for Senator Biden.

Short succinct comments please. Leave as much time as possible for Sarah to blather on and on. The more she talks, the more she is likely to say something stupid. The same goes for you Senator.

Short anf sweet, and tell Gwin Ifill to let Governor Palin have your unused time.

Remember during that Iowa debate when your remark was Joycean, and all you said was "Yes". Recall how that was your best moment in all the debates.

Keep that in mind, Senator Biden, and give Governor Palin enough rope to hang herself.
Let her do most of the talking, that way you will be less likely to put your foot in your mouth.

"Yes" worked well for you.

Yeah. It should be the only kiss Biden gives her: keep it simple stupid.

You nailed it.

user-pic

Meh.

Sounds as if she's going to follow the same game plan that did such a bang-up job for McCain last week.

She might walk away with the 'Memorable Line Of The Night' award, but that's not going to be enough.

They still have a borderline-senile, resentful, cranky bastard at the top of the ticket, and a couple of zippy one-liners isn't going to change that.

Virtually nothing they have done so far has succeeded more than a day or two. All they have are tricks and gimmicks. Palin can attack all she wants but that doesn't make her any more qualified, and Biden is not unaware of his own weaknesses.

user-pic

I love all this direct advice to Biden. I'm sure he needs more advice right now.

;)

Well, I just heard you advising people to calm down. Coming from you, that was like an Espresso shop urging people not to drink coffee.

user-pic

Thanks liam.

happy birthday to you too.

Later - I'm outta. I have enough goingon - I don't need this

You sure love to dish it out though. You have done so over and over to me, and the first time you get a little return fire, you cut an run, right after you tore Ripper McCord a new one for doing the same thing. You called him "a pussy" and said that you can not stand people like him.

Demonstrating his superior qualifications to be commander in chief, John McCain today led his troops across the border out of Michigan without announcing it out loud.

Joe, Don't feed the TROLL!

There is no way the last 4 weeks of gaffes are going to disappear from the people's minds just because she gives a decent performance. I think Biden will be outstanding tonight.

user-pic

Biden is going to do fine. He knows that people think that he's a blabbermouth. He also knows that he can't be seen as bullying. He probably wants to rip his own head off because he can't treat Palin the same way he would any other opponent, for fear of bullying her--he's smart enough to recognize this huge double standard at work here.

(And don't bother telling me about Rick Lazio and Hillary Clinton. Lazio was behind before the debates, a fact everyone conveniently forgets, and, he physically approached her while wagging his finger...)

Palin is going to be charming, and articulately incoherent--remember the "blizzard of words" that Charlie Gibson pointed out? She might have one-liners, but not much more. I don't think tonight's debate is going to change anything.

What Palin may use, from the Politico article:

--North Korea as “a paper tiger” on CBS’s “The Early Show” in 2006. (“I would rather have seen it do exactly what it did, demonstrate to the whole world that it is in fact a paper tiger.”)

-- voting for defense cuts during the Reagan administration, and voting against the first Gulf war in 1991. (PolitiFact.com points out that he voted with the majority of Senate Democrats on the resolution.)

— primary-season statements about Obama’s readiness to lead and his positions on Iraq, Iran and Afghanistan. Also, including Biden's vote for the Iraq war.

--also apparently Biden's words on the rich paying more in taxes as being patriotic and other assorted "too liberal" attacks.

I suppose "SURGE" goes without saying.

So my advice to Biden is to announce his wife does not support a referendum allowing Deleware to the the first state to pull in and then out of the United States.

user-pic

Palin's going to work harder tonight!

From Politico, when asked about Gwen Ifill by Sean Hannity:

It's motivating to me, even, to hear Gwen's comments there because, again, it makes us work that much harder, and it provides even more fairness and objectivity and choices for the voters on Nov. 4, if we try that much harder.

Working harder provides fairness and objectivity and choices for the voters.

Blizzard of words, indeed.

What to do during the awful silence:

Ifill shrugs.
Biden winks.
Palin bombs.

With only 90 seconds to respond to any of the questions, poor Sarah may become extremely frustrated. Have we yet seen her speak succinctly, let alone articulately? (Well, OK, I guess there was that one "I'll get back to ya" line.)

She might be able to deliver and attack line, but it will be interesting to see what happens if she is called upon to answer Biden's rebuttel and has no script to follow.

They should have made this debate a series of multiple choice questions, in all fairness to Sarah and Joe.

That wouldn't help her, either.

Everyone talks of Biden's knowledgability on foreign affairs and certain domestic policies. The area where Biden will have the huge knowledge advantage on Palin is in McCain's own positions and votes. They've been collegues for a long, long time. He can speak more authoritatively on what John McCain has said ond done than she can. That is just an enormous strategic advantage.

That is the point I was making earlier, Mike. He should make Palin respond to what he says about McCain instead of responding to her attacks.

Are you the Mike Rogers that has been on with Ed Scultz from time to time?

What this is is a hope that Biden will condescend to her BECAUSE of his foreign policy credentials. It's a gimmick and a ploy, and Biden is much too smart to fall for such crap.

Will miss the debate today, have to go to the VA Clinic for APPT. 3PM HI time. Schucks.

user-pic

O/T, but Obama pisses me off. This is what he eats for breakfast:

Four to six eggs, potatoes, and wheat toast. Every now and then, fruit, bacon, and oatmeal.

Four eggs? Potatoes? And he's still so damn skinny?

McCain is right. Life isn't fair.

Had a lover like that once. Get up in the middle of the night, eat a quart of ice cream, lose weight.

Justifiable homicide, fer sher.

user-pic

"Eat a quart of ice-cream. Lost weight".

That is just so wrong on so many levels, isn't it?

It is probably the only real meal that he has access to until the end of very long days. He has not eaten like that in the, before he went on his long grueling campaign.

I am glad that he is filling the tank before each day's marathon, because he does not have any excess weight to burn off.

In my town (a very liberal bastion in the Appalachians) the local brew-and-view has cancelled tonight's movie (Hellboy II) and instead is showing the debate. The marquee outside reads BIDEN V PALIN like it's a televised prizefight...

...which, in a way, it is. I'm going; it'll make the debate a spectator sport, complete with cheers and boos (and booze!). Taking my teenage son too; he and his big sis learned about Obama long before I did; they saw him in Columbia SC late year (with Oprah), and my daughter did canvassing down in SC prior to their primary. I'm so proud!

They cancelled HellBoyII for Biden v Palin?
What do they have, some damn college there?

Yup yup. UNCA.

Grumpy old man.

He is such an a-hole.

I think the thing to keep in mind as well is that Biden has probably never had such a coordinated and sharp team surrounding him before. This is the same team basically that prepared Obama for his debate. He'll be fine.

user-pic

Biden has the most wonderful smile.... And he's just gonna look at his wife. And smile!!!!!

He's going to be in his element tonight. He's got the wind beneath his wings. And nothing, nothing SP could say will take away Joe's moment in the sun, his opportunity to bring it home for Obama. His chance to stand up for what's right. And state the truth about mcShame - calmly, but so it'll feel like hell for the other side.

I think the mcLiar folks have put out the word that SP's gonna attack... because it's all they've got left. Beat their chests like gorillas. Because there's nothing else!!! Really pathetic. After they've protected her all time.... she's gonna scare us!

Give me a break!

Well said, Thera. The contrast between the two candidates is striking. You can even see it in their smiles --- Biden has a warm, engaging grin, while Palin's smile seems forced and artificial.

Whatever the outcome tonight, the best MAN will win!!

user-pic

Amen!

user-pic

The dark side can't even keep its talking points straight!

Be deferential to the little lady...

Be scared of the Dame!

We're happy with Ifill.

It's gonna be all Ifill's fault.

Etc.

McCAIN DROPS OUT OF MICHIGAN!!!!!!!

ChicagoJoe, like a bad case of ChicagoBO does not know strategy from tactics. It was a phased withdrawal, nobody heard him mention the word victory in Michigan, and he mailed that Wolverine bracelet back to the mother in Ypsilanti.

this is getting over analyzed. just sit back and enjoy.

Ricky,

Pardon me...PHASED WITHDRAWAL. Maybe you should also correct AP, Reuters, CNN, Fox and the BBC who also just announced "McCain DROPS OUT of Michigan!"

CJ, pardon my snark but you probably think this carefully concocted economic stabilization strategy is called a BAIL OUT BILL. I hope you are kind enough to house some of the McCain refugees flooding across the border. After all the Tigers tanked for your White Sox.

I have more faith in McCain's advisors to screw this up. They have the ability to turn a Hail Mary into a double dribble. Don't under-rate them.

Mixed metaphoricalyy, right?

"turn a Hail Mary into a double dribble" - Brilliant

I wonder if this Michigan thing is anything like his "suspended" campaign.

It's more like his campaign with suspenders. They are burning through too much cash and have to cut back on expenses. In order for them to have enough cash to keep up with ads in the last two weeks, they need to cut back on outlays...New spending reports should be out by this weekend. Obamas campaign has more funds going forward and the ability to raise more.

It is a strategy. McCain understands. He is taking advantage of the opening left by Obama's tactic of withdrawing from North Dakota. His forces will steal unannounced (the way experienced commanders in chief do) across the narrow martime boundary with South Dakota and surround the Sioux in the Black Hills by the Little Big Horn.

Apparently the mcLame campaign has figured out that only when she's angry does SP manage to put words together and make some sense. So... somehow anger let's her "talk." And that reminds me of something I read yesterday. She's 44. Another sibling is 45. And a third is 46. Not sure where the 4th one fits in.

But... this is a lady whose mother had 2 toddlers at the time she born. Had to have messed her up somehow. I'm picturing this tiny baby getting very little attention. Unless she had a fit. Somehow her language development never took hold. Except for getting angry. (yup... a partner and soulmate to mcNasty!)

Thera,

What it that strange thing she does, with the tip of tongue, all about. She does this weird thing, at the end of some sentences, of then sticking a sizable chunk of her tongue out, through her closed lips. It is very weird. Have you noticed it. She does not do it all the time, so I was wondering if you could determine if it is some sort of a tell. Sometimes she does it at the start of giving a response.

It looks very much like a baby calf will do. Perhaps that is why McCain thinks she is a maverick.

Biden should wait for a really good attack from Palin on a big issue like Russia/Georgia or Middle East peace and after she lands a good "zinger" he should acknowledge that she has made an interesting point and then ask what she would have done differently and why.

"I've BEEN to [name a Capital]! I've been there personally! I know all about what's going on there!"

GW Bush 1 did that with Ferraro and it fell like a lead Baloon.

Gotcha again, surf boy (see responses about Michigan) People cared about Reagan and Mondale.
What Bush and Ferraro did was meaningless. Bush got to be President anyway and picked the worst Vice President ever so Sarah will have every right to name someone less intelligent than she is when her turn comes.

One big distinction: Compare the resume that Bush One had, at that time, compared to the one Palin has, or to put it more accurately, the one she does not have.

Yes, Liam. But it is never fair to compare anyone's resume to Bush I. He found oil when he was in the oil business. But his son was re-elected. He was Ambassador to the UN, but Palin got to meet Mr. Bono there. He discovered the grocery price scanner but Gore invented the internet, won a Presidential election and the Nobel Prize. As John McCain said just today while his treoops were evacuating Michigan, life is not fair.

To put it another way, if Ifill asks her to name one thing on her resume that is superior to that of Bush I, and she has another two minutes of embarassing silence, will we Dem's admit that at least she got one right?

You mean Bono President of Ireland.

Sarah just added two more foreign countries that she has dealt with. The journalists from Gotchastan, and today she landed in Missiouristan.

Greg- elementary level of competence that has eluded her so far??? Now that was really funny. I still believe that a lot of commentators who are saying she is going to win the debate are going to be shocked by how well Biden's going to do. He is going to look hot and really be graceful and to the point. This debate style is good for him too.

Palin is women from a tiny town in the middle of BFE who doesn't know anything of the world beyond Alaska. One doesn't even have to go into her lackluster academic credentials. She has gotten through life riding on her charm, looks and willingness to be ruthless. This is the big leagues now and that stuff doesn't work anymore. I'm confident Biden will take her down despite the Republican's ad hominem attack tactics on both the Biden and the moderator.

'the Biden'

I like it! Obama - The Biden 2008!

I plan on spending most of November and December in Alaska, staring across at Russia, in order to improve my chances of being named our ambassador to Russia. No one else will have near the current experience, dealing with Russia, that I will be able to present.

My best guess is their strategy is to do anything to change the debate narrative, and consequently the news cycles thereafter, from the economy to foreign policy -- even if it's just a few hours. The non-stop coverage of the economy is killing McCain and he has to change the discourse to something (anything) more favorable to their strengths.

They know intellectually Biden will dominate her regardless of the topic, therefore they should at least try to force the topic to one more suitable to the Palin-McSame campaign. Furthermore, if they get really lucky and somehow force a Biden-gaffe on foreign policy, then that will be the headline, especially among the punditocracy.

They may have some success changing the narrative -- depends on how Ifill handles it -- but, I don't think Biden will fall prey too easily to gaffe mode.

"A noun, a verb and 'Don'tcha know'..."

If Biden can be considered "King of the Hill", Sarah is "Queen of the Bluff".

Great tagline..

This is the stupidest, riskiest strategy ever.

Palin's problem isn't really that she's stupid (she clearly is not) it's that she's a horrible bullshitter. She's too obviously bullshitting. Now they want her to bullshit the master bullshitter for 90 minutes?

She is going to be accusing him of doing things she doesn't understand at all. As far as she's concerned, she might as well be saying "Joe, you furdled, the frumpfrump off the credenza in 1999, why didn't you overglarb the freepot?". He can say ANYTHING in response, and she can't (by word or deed) point out the flaw in his answer.

You can't nail a good debater with one snarky question, you have to be able to follow up, and she can't.

So basically, she attacks him for 90 minutes, he treats her criticisms like softballs regardless of whether or not they are, and comes out looking like Mr 100% Right. The ONLY play for them is if he loses his cool.

McCain is betting his entire campaign on Biden making a gaffe. This has become typical behavior from their campaign, and I expect typical results.

Good strategy but wrong person to carry out the strategy.

Here's a quote from an old article on Politico that seems to me to accurately describe Biden on foreign policy:

"Biden is the quintessential pragmatic centrist realist — sometimes he’s center-right, sometimes he’s center-left,” says Council on Foreign Relations fellow Leslie Gelb, who co-authored Biden’s Iraq federalization plan. “At the start of the war he leaned to the conservative side. ... Several years ago, as things went wrong, he moved to the liberal side of center. He’s very solid and predictable in this regard, the way he responds to circumstance.”

Gelb is trying to make Biden's flexibility sound like a good thing. And just maybe it is -- but I'm not at all taking a side on that question.

What does seem true to me is that in the hands of an adept political opponent, Biden's flexibility could easily be turned against him. He could be made to sound like a man who is devoid of principles and lacking the courage to stick with tough decisions. An adept, well-informed opponent would try to make Biden explain, in the heat of the moment, all of the changes in his thinking about Iraq. Remember, he's gone from gung-ho advocate, who just wanted to be Bush's partner, to having second thoughts about who would do the heavy lifting (he was an early advocate for getting Nato more involved), to wanting to divide Iraq into three, to wanting to beat a retreat. If the opponent, by contrast, could present his/her side as steadfast in its overall objectives (while willing to adjust tactically to the changing situation), the opponent could score many points on this front against Biden.

The key is that the explanations couldn't be reduced to sound bites that get played over and over. But the quips and digs that force the explanations to be offered can be reduced to sound bites and would be played over and over.

Palin, we all know, is not an adept, well-informed opponent. For her to try to put Biden on the defensive for his shifting positions on Iraq would be a major league challenge -- sort of like bringing one of my little leaguers up to face CC Sabbathia.

But don't be surprised if McCain's handlers haven't loaded her up with clever quips and one-liners designed to make Biden explain his many changes.

You can sort of dimly see what the McCain campaign might be thinking. If she could pull this off -- which, again, would be an utterly astounding feat on her part -- she would not only score points against Biden, but by undermining Biden's wisdome and experience would undercut the argument that although Obama may not yet have great foreign policy cred, he's got the wise and experienced Joe Biden at his side.

Anyway, that is my guess as to what they are thinking. But like I said expecting Palin to execute this strategy is, well, laughable.

Couldn't Biden use that to his advantage, as in changing one's position in response to changing conditions is more intelligent than following the very definiton of insanity by doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result as was done for far too long in Iraq. I think that after Palin delivers her snarky zingers/one-liners etc. Biden should patiently say "After 35 years in the Senate I think people, for the most part, know where I stand. What's far more important to the American voter today Gov. Palin is learning where exactly you stand. So, could you explain to us what you would do/would've done. Especially concerning Iraq as it's well known that she said in the past that she never gave Iraq much thought.

Or to put it differently, if she brings up his Irag positions, he could just say, well, it's interesting that you should bring that up since you're on the record as saying you never gave Iraq much thought.

Well but the question is how much do Americans really know about Joe Biden's Iraq positions?

Will people really be impressed by a guy who has to explain why he's taken so many different positions on Iraq?

Palin has an easier task. She basically repeats McCain's pablum about being for the surge when it was unpopular (Biden was against -- although he used to say we went into Iraq with too few troops, but by the time the surge was being voted on, he had given up on achieving victory in Iraq.) and how victory is in sight, etc.

In terms of being made for TV and churning out replayable sound bites, Palin has a much easier task than Biden.

Just saw this on Huffpro:
Amid charges that Palin was the victim of sexism, Biden said he will treat his Republican counterpart with respect: "She is the governor of a state. She warrants respect. The only thing that I have to find out and you all have to find out is what are her views."

YESSS!!!

Still, to change your position you have to have had one. I doubt she's ever given anything of substance much thought. For Crissakes she couldn't even name a fucking newspaper or magazine. I mean even if she never actually read one couldn't she pull some names out of her ass. NYT, Wash Post, Newsweek, Time or at least some neocon rag or two.

Pointing out her lack of interest would at the very least highlight the stark difference between her absence on the issue and the fact that he has, indeed, given conditions in Iraq much deliberation. And he can pretty much use that tack in response to all her zingers since she's pretty much a blank slate.

Anyone watch that horse's ass Lou Dobbs? "This is all about character! Biden's a plagiarist. A plagiarist!" No mention of Palin's qualifications. Maybe he's already called this race.

This is starting to look like Lee retreating to Appomattox.....a big mistake tonite by Palin and the full blown rout will be on...

I think Palin will be on the attack tonight, because it's much easier to memorize and repeat a couple of attacks against your opponent than to explain your own position on complex issues.

That's true even if you actually *do* understand the issues.

Besides, attacking their opponents is what Republicans do best.
