Did Palin Really Describe Some Parts Of The Country As "Pro-America"?

Check out this little nugget buried in a report about a fundraiser Sarah Palin spoke at last night:

Palin also made a point of mentioning that she loved to visit the "pro-America" areas of the country, of which North Carolina is one. No word on which states she views as unpatriotic.

Context here is everything, of course. We're trying to get the full quote, and will keep you posted.

Something tells me her criteria has something to do with color the state is on the electoral maps.

user-pic

How the fuck would she know? Let's get real - she is the governor of a state so far removed from the rest of the states it might as well be a separate country and goddamn it - how many African Americans live in Alaska? Just how white is it?

I'm so sick of this goddamn bitch telling me and everyone else what "America" is - she has got not one clue.

user-pic

She's dangerously stupid. Seems like you and I both need a Xanax.

http://pufferfish.typepad.com/

user-pic

I agree. I'm sick and tired of her of her insulting my intelligence. As POP says over at C&L, "Evey time she opens her mouth, I feel a little smarter." That's paraphrasing, but it's spot on.

user-pic

mebbe she meant pro-zac amurika. you betcha.

user-pic

That would sure fit Utah (my current residence)!

user-pic

She's just the next generation's Phyllis Schlafly. She'll be just as "important" to the national conversation too. Relegated to b-roll red meat sound bites and racist secessionist separatist rants. Less than 3 months in the spotlight and she's already a has-been. I love it :-)

user-pic

She can't even shine Phyllis Shafly's shoes - she's a 21st century Anita Bryant.

That's all she is.

user-pic

Here's Sarah Palin's "Amerikkka"

According to the 2000 U.S. Census, 69.3% of single-race Alaska residents were White and 15.6% were Native American or Alaska Native,[21] the largest proportion of any state. Multiracial/Mixed-Race people are the third largest group of people in the state, totaling 6.9% of the population. The largest self-reported ancestry groups in the state are German (16.6%), Alaska Native or American Indian (15.6%), Irish (10.8%), British (9.6%), American (5.7%), and Norwegian (4.2%).
user-pic

It says here that less than 4% of the population of AK is black. Only about 24,000.

http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/02000.html

user-pic

Also doesn't begin to mention the term she calls Native American Eskimos. She calls them Arctic Arabs. That's nice of her also.

user-pic

seriously, who gives a shit what she has to say anymore?

user-pic

If Obama had said that..........

user-pic

O my god - he would be pilloried if he said something even close to that.

That's such anti-American thing to say - she is a walking compendium of the worst excesses of the extreme Right Wing in this country.

user-pic

Remember bittergate?

I expect the same sort of coverage of this. Oh wait, Sarah's white.

user-pic

Sarah is white, therefore she is not ungrateful when she says this shit.

You know what they said about Wright -he's "ungrateful" which is such a terribly racist thing to say - it's tantamount to saying, like Pat Buchanan did, that slavery is the best thing that ever happened to Africans because it turned them into African Americans.

That is so incredibly mind-blowingly offensive that I cannot believe that people actually say that in this day and time.

user-pic

Well, I lived in Vermont for seven years. Considering the fact that Vermont's Junior Senator, Bernie Sanders, is the only out socialist in the Senate... I'd say Vermont probably isn't one of those "pro-America" states.

user-pic

They speak French there too.

user-pic

Oui, c'est vrai. ;)

user-pic

By that logic she should have hated NH when she was here last week... northern parts of the state, a lot of people speak french at home (given that the closest city worthy of the name is in Quebec)

user-pic

Not to mention Maine, who has two official state languages: English and French. They have official state documents in French up there.

user-pic

Yeah, I was up that way a couple weeks ago (wedding). I had no idea that French was so important in parts of the US.

(I've belligerently argued before with people that English and Spanish were the only important languages in America, and then was disproved that conceit pretty quickly up there!)

user-pic

Well, Maine is officially the Scariest State in the Union since Stephen King officially resides there.

user-pic

They're immune to irony.

user-pic

Why do so many of our states hate America?

user-pic

Why do Republicans hate America?

user-pic

Because there is nothing left to steal.

user-pic

I bet she thinks that NM is now one of the America-haters.

I know that it's a gaffe, but, jeez, what a stupid thing for Palin to say.

user-pic

Well, the Taos Valley pretty much hates Sarah, so it's mutual.

LOL!

user-pic

Just ask Todd Palin where the America-haters are located! This might be the richest nugget of irony in the whole Palin drama....she visits "pro-America" but she's married to a SECESSIONIST. Alaska First, indeed...

user-pic

Palin's speech is dangerous speech.

user-pic

Yeah, I live in Ohio and we're only sorta "pro-America". Where I am in Cleveland, we hate America. Boy, we just can't stand it which is why we vote Dem all the time. Former President Clinton was in town yesterday and gave some of the usual pol-speak about loving America. Then he winked and we all had a hearty laugh.

user-pic

"America" and "USA-USA-USA" are short hand phrases for an ominous element in the body politic. She could hardly say pro-fascist, or pro-racist, or even pro-narrow*minded-insular-xenophobic-self*destructive-idiotic-materialistic-exceptionalistic-fundamentalist-illogical-violent-reactionary-non*civil-inhumane-jingoistic-chauvinistic-incoherent-pseudoscientific now could she?

user-pic

I'm pretty sure she can't even define most of those words.

user-pic

That about covers it . . .

user-pic

I have had it with these republifucks telling me I'm not patriotic because of what church I don't go to or who I want to vote for. They try to tell me I'm not pro-American because of where I live. They tell me I'm un-American because my soulmate is another man. Fuck them! I pay my taxes. I write software for the military for God's sake! If they'd stop trying to tell me my business long enough to see that the country is falling to pieces around them maybe they could contribute to the solution instead of frothing off about how who I want to marry is somehow going to destroy their kingdom.

Feh! Bitches!

user-pic

Word up.

user-pic

Truly righteous.

user-pic

ClosetLuddite for Pres in 2016!

(And I don't give a fuck who his "First Lady" is ...)

user-pic

I'm going to go out on a limb and speculate that she is referring to areas with hardworking white americans, no?

user-pic

She's trying to make her stupid joke about taxes and patriotism, and she fails.

user-pic

Given her associations, going to a "pro-America" state would be quite a change for her.

But regardless of the context, this is reason #4306 why she is unqualified, AT BEST for what she's doing. There is never a reason to utter such tripe--never. Words have consequences.

She is nasty, vindictive and common, and I can't wait until we send her back to frying up mooseburgers.

user-pic

You make me laugh. I can just hear that great political philosopher, Hyacinth Bucket saying of Palin:

"The woman is so *common*."

user-pic

You make me laugh. I can just hear that great political philosopher, Hyacinth Bucket saying of Palin:

"The woman is so *common*."

user-pic

Speaking as a citizen and resident of a Pro-America state, I would tend to nominate states where the governor doesn't kow-tow to (or marry) secessionists for the "Pro-America state" award.

user-pic

Oh my God! Why are we talking about all this trivial shit when Britney Spears didn't show up for her trial! Oh my god! Oh my god!!

user-pic

We're basically un-American!

user-pic

Obama should pound on that comment...Palin seccesionist attitude is pretty glowing. I guess PA, NH, NY, CA are all anti-American.

user-pic

Also, as Andrew Sullivan, Jon Stewart and others have pointed out, Joe the plumber has had more press conferences than Sarah Palin.

user-pic

Without even being a plumber . . .

user-pic

Nice to know the mcFailin campaign actually assists the Vendetta Twins in remaining in their alternate universe. Can't let them be depressed and see or read the truth. Nope, gotta help them stay delusional.

A campaign that promotes delusions! Now I've heard everything.

user-pic

I guess we'll see which areas of the country are "pro-America" come Nov. 5th. Hey, maybe they will secede from the rest, eh Todd?

user-pic

Oh Sarah. We don't hate America. We don't even hate you. We just hate your laziness and your adherence to an evil ideology that seeks to belittle and enslave all that makes us human.

Although, your phony accent really needs to go away too. Yup, yup. Also.

user-pic

LOL!

I love that comment. I really love it -

user-pic

Here's another example of the right-wing nuts overreacting.

http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/archives/individual/2008_10/015233.php

"OHIO'S STATE FLAG IS NOT OBAMA'S FAULT.... Barack Obama gave a speech in Toledo, Ohio, the other day, and behind his podium were several American and Ohioan flags. Not exactly newsworthy stuff.

The problem is, Ohio's flag features a prominent, large "O." Obama's right-wing detractors didn't know this, and assumed that the Obama campaign had created its own flag to stand alongside the American flag. Conservative activists and talk-show hosts had a bit of a freak-out. Here's a hilarious example.

On the October 15 broadcast of his nationally syndicated radio show, Bob Grant said: "[W]hat is that flag that Obama's been standing in front of that looks like an American flag, but instead of having the field of 50 stars representing the 50 states, there's a circle?" He then said: "Is the circle the 'O' for Obama? Is that what it is?" Grant later said: "[D]id you notice Obama is not content with just having several American flags, plain old American flags with the 50 states represented by 50 stars? He has the 'O' flag. And that's what that 'O' is. That's what that 'O' is."

John Cole also noted a Townhall commenter who was outraged that Obama would "change" the American flag: "I don't want to hear any looney left comments that they are only decoration. They ARE a modification of the American flag."

Here's the Ohio state flag, and here's Obama standing in front of Ohio's state flag.

Sometimes, the right finds the strangest things to get worked up about."

Hilarious!

user-pic

I hear he also plans to change the name of the country to "The United States of Obama"

user-pic

And this will be the new national anthem by Lil Wayne.

user-pic

Well I still like Swagga, but I'll take this!

user-pic

As usual, that's a totally garbled version of the real story. It's going to be Hussein's States of Obama.

user-pic

ZOMG! Thank you. I love starting the day with a laugh!

And I, Ohio born and raised, always thought the Ohio flag was kind of subversive just because it wasn't a rectangle. Now I see that was just the beginning of its radical, subversive roots!

user-pic

If y'all don't show proper respect for my state's flag we may have to secede from the union. Don't make my state hate America.

user-pic

It's comments like these that will doom any candidacy in 2012. Keep talking this, Sarah, you idzit!

user-pic

Idzit. I like it. A superinflamed id, spewing its discharge everywhere.

Describes her well.

user-pic

Must not read TPM at lunchtime, must not read TPM....

user-pic

No word on which states she views as unpatriotic.

I'm guessing her response will be "Whichever four square feet Obama is standing on!" *wink, smile, bizarre reference to teachers and the after-life*

user-pic

She really is Commander CooCoo Bananas with tits:

A day after The Washington Post's Dana Milbank wrote about how the Secret Service is blocking press at Sarah Palin's rallies, it appears Palin's staff is blocking her from listening to the press. Palin revealed at a fundraiser last night that she is in an ever-growing media bubble.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/10/17/palins-staffers-keep-her_n_135551.html

user-pic

AP/Yahoo's post-debate poll, released just now:
"Since September, McCain has lost ground on nearly every quality tested in the poll, including lower scores for being likable, decisive, honest, competent, intelligent and inspiring.
"Following debates between the two rivals in which the Arizona senator has appeared angry at times, 46 percent consider him hot-tempered, more than triple the 13 percent who say so about Obama.

"Obama also has a 56 percent to 41 percent advantage for understanding how the financial crisis affects people. Unhappily for McCain, six in 10 voters who may still change their minds, about as many independents and even one in 10 McCain backers prefer Obama on that question.
"The Illinois senator is trusted more than McCain to improve the economy by 54 percent to 44 percent...
"A month ago, more people said the Alaska governor made them more likely to vote for McCain than less likely by 14 percentage points. That gap is now down to 3 points - even as growing numbers say her Democratic counterpart, Joe Biden, makes them more inclined to support Obama."

user-pic

Funny how she twice mentioned her handlers, and how they won't let her do what she wants. Maybe this was a little gift to them? I'm sure they all hate her by now.
By the way, somebody should turn this into an ad. Maybe a pro-Obama veterans group would be a good candidate?

user-pic

SO DISRESPECTFUL! (yes, I'm yelling).

user-pic

Ignoring Palin keeps the emphasis on angry Grampy. No need to remind voters about the friendly, folksy, (wacko) Palin.

user-pic

In her politically incestuous crowd up in Alaska, "pro-America" is a bad thing, right? So maybe she was giving everyone a backhanded compliment.

user-pic

The question is, why does she hate parts of America so much??

I think Palin and the GOP hate great American states and cities -- like NYC and Mass., Vermont, and SF, LA, Seattle etc... -- for their freedom.

And irony of ironies, as a Republican, she sides wih those "pro-American" states which fought a war to destroy the Union. Republicans, once the party of Lincoln, now are running for President of the Confederacy.

user-pic

Excuse me - she is not a southerner. As such, she does not represent the south. She knows nothing about it - Alaska could not possibly be further removed in every way from the southern United States.

Do not blame Palin on us just cause you think she thinks we are "her people."

We're not.

user-pic

I'm not talking about reality. I'm talking about Palin's bizarre hate-scape.

You and I both know which part of America she is trying to paint herself as part of.

The "good guys": Red states - the South and MidWest. Those are the "good guys" she's talking about.

The bad guys: The Coasts, New England, blue states, all major cities. And unfortunately for Tacoma, they'd probably be include in the godless latte-sipping prius drivers, just by proximity.

Historically, tho, it is interesting that the GOP originally got its patriotic cred entirely by saving the Union from the not-so-pro-American states-righters down South. Now it's become the party of the South, dominated by Washington-haters.

user-pic

by the way - Seattle, WA has the most homeless people living on it's streets I've seen in any city anywhere.

And Tacoma is the most redneck place I've ever been.

user-pic

It's because she doesn't get to visit "pro-America" states very often, since she's governor of a "pro-Alaska" state.

user-pic

I heard her speech in NH on MSNBC and I heard her talk about all of the MA transplants in NH escaping MA over high taxes. It is known that the Repubs in NH hate the transplants because they have made NH lean left more often. It is something that I think was missed by the NH media.

user-pic

FWIW, Alaska is about 3.7% Afro-Caribbean-American (sorry, if I leave out the middle term, my cousins go ballistic). Most came courtesy of the US Air Force which has a couple of big bases (there are also Navy and Coast Guard installations). Anyway, the servicepeople and their dependents count towards that percentage, and quite a few have retired to the areas around the bases. Walk down the street in Juneau or Anchorage or certainly Wasilla, the view will be very white (since the Native Alaskans are not dark skinned).
