Obama Campaign Buying Half-Hour Blocs Of Primetime On The Networks
The Obama campaign confirms to us that Obama is buying up half-hour primetime blocs on the networks, for unspecified programming, later this month.
The campaign declined to elaborate. But Obama has closed a deal for a half-hour of time on CBS on Wednesday, Oct. 29th, at 8 P.M., a source familiar with the discussions confirms.
Obama's bids for the airtime were first reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
It's unclear yet whether Obama has closed the deal with NBC, and we're told that the bid for time on Fox has run into a potential complication: Game six of the World Series is set to air on that network on the 29th, should it be necessary.
So what is Obama planning to run? "It could be a long commercial, it could be a speech," the source said.
That should be interesting. October 29th is less than a week before Election Day.

You know what this means. Those September fundraising numbers will scare the hell out of every one.

I was thinking the same thing. Whatever he's paying, it has to be more than they would have expected to normally get for advertising during that time. So...yeah, they have to be absolutely flush with cash to be doing this. :)

Rumor on The Hill is that the number could be close to $150 million. $100 million for sure. Absolutely insane.

Obviously.
If Obama was low on money, all he had to do in this very optimistic context was ask. Also, those are good days to get rid of bad news. But the good news, it's better to keep them stacked for the rainy days.
In this good/bad news setup, it is important to note that the RNC announced their September numbers just before the 2nd debate last week, thus making sure it wasn't a subject for too long.

Any idea on how much this would cost? I mean CBS is supposed to be a done deal, they're close with NBC and reached out to Fox.
I assume it will be a live "fireside chat" type of deal, I don't think there is any chance it would be a canned commercial.

Figure 22 minutes of actual programming, unless he's bought up all the ad time as well. If only bought 22 minutes, then CBS gets the ad revenue and could be reasonable. If he bought the full thirty minutes, it could be pricey . . . very pricey.
My guess is that he wants time on different nights on different channels. Even if folks don't watch, they are definitely going to hear about it.

I'm almost sure he's bought the whole half-hour slot.
Ronald Reagan did this. In fact I've been thinking about this very thing and hoping Obama would do it.
The Reagan campaign ran a half-hour biographical documentary, very well done, chronicling their man's rise to governor of California. It was effective because it raised the comfort level of people who were inclined to vote for the outsider/change candidate, but were having trouble getting past the "movie star" thing. This short film led them to think of the guy as GOVERNOR Reagan.
This could work big-time for Barack, this generation's outsider/change candidate. It can tell his story in an inspiring (and also reassuring), leading voters who are still having trouble with the "black" thing, or the "Muslim name" thing, to think of the guy as an all-American success story. The mixed-race kid who, against all odds, went all the way from Hawaii to Harvard, thence to teaching constitutional law in Chicago, finally to the U.S. Senate -- and look at him now! Cue the cheers.
Buying popcorn now.

Odd thought. . .
This could be genius.
If he only bought 22 minutes, leaving time for commercials -- can you imagine what those commercials would be worth?
Seriously, that will get some eyes I'm thinking.

If McCain had the money, buying the half-hour time slot right after would be a coup. I assume Obama probably blocked that possibility in negotiations for his purchase.

I doubt if it could be blocked. By law, don't media outlets have to make time availability to any candidate who can pay for it?
The problem is, no money for McCain. So sad.

I dunno. Remember the night of the "green wall"? When McCain thought he was so smart getting a speech of his own the night that Hillary (we thought) was going to concede and Obama clinched the nomination? He suffered badly in contrast. I'm not sure a half-hour of awkward McCain immediately following a carefully scripted Obama appearance would be worth what he would have to pay.
Brings back another memory - 1984 Democratic convention. Speeches on successive nights by Jesse Jackson - a real barnburner, then the Mario Cuomo,(in a speech ranked as one of the best in the country's history) and - then - the nominee, Walter Mondale. Let's just say Mondale did not benefit by going last.

The campaign is probably betting that the World Series won't go to Game 6.
I imagine Oct. 29th is the closest the campaign could get to the election without going into November sweeps. The ad prices go up during a sweeps month, and the networks would be less likely to want to give up that air time, even if it is paid for. (Although, from what I've been hearing about Gary Unmarried, I think CBS just got the better end of that deal.) After the writer's strike last year, I'm sure the networks want the first sweeps of this tv season to go as smoothly as possible.

The first thing this tells us is that Obama hauled in a whole lot of dough last month. I seriously doubt they would do it if it had to have commercials. Obama being all serious, cut to Preparation H commercial.
My opinion, based on nothing in particular, is that he will announce his administration team. Buffet as Treasurer, Clark as SOD, etc. If there was anyone feeling still a little hesitant about voting about someone "green behind the ears," this will assure them that the country is good hands.

As I said in another thread, the timing of the 29th is strategic - by airing on the 29th, that allows 3 or 4 more days for the clips to saturate YouTube and spread across the internet like wildfire before the election.
The ONLY downfall to the 29th is that allows McCain plenty of time to relatiate with more speeches, spins and ads about anything Obama says in whatever he's going to do.
If it gets tied up with the Game 6 of the WS, then that's a chance Obama needs to take. WS only airs on one station anyway...Obama will be on 3 or 4.

How demoralizing could it be for the GOP to disenfranchise thousands and thousands of voters and still lose?
Watching the classy Michelle Obama last night confirmed this move of buying huge time slots. They want to be running across the finish line. Republicans are under the assumption that all they need to do is win the election and campaign some more when needed then do their jobs after all that. It's obvious Obama is different. He wants everyone to vote so it can be a change that can go all the way from the top down. We need every ones support to redirect our country in the correct direction.
It's gonna freak out the republicans when there is unity and direction in our country. That may be their socialism, fascism, communism or whatever degrading -ism they throw out to create fear. People coming together for the greater good is one of the most patriotic things we can do.

I wouldn't worry too much about being opposite the Series. As people are pointing out, the series won't start immediately at 8 PM EST.
If I were the Obama Campaign, I would do at least the *last* one of these as a live speach at a good sized arena/venue. We all know how good Obama is in speaking to a crowd, and a large setting seems to bring out the best in him. Use it as his "take home" speach. I frankly would get it closer to Tuesday than Wed the week before.
On the other ones...
A faux Town Hall wouldn't be a bad idea for one, getting people to ask questions and Obama connecting. Limit it so that there is time to talk about it, and some follow up... possibly even Obama wisely asking people what their concerns are, and then how he would address them. Perhaps "4 Key Issues" since each would them get about 5 minutes to be talked about.
Perhaps in a closely related formar, a "Round Table" with Obama, Biden... and perhaps 2-3 other key Dems who can hit the talking points and Obama/Biden can go back and forth with. Perhaps Webb on Iraq. Perhaps Debbie Wasserman Schultz on Social Security/Medicare... I know there are more senior members of Congress who might be better wonks, but she is a young up & comer and the party needs it. Plus she's FLA, and that's a good time to push it to haul that state into the Blue column. And economic speaker... don't know who our best speaker is beyond Obama.
Healthcare? Of course bring in the heavy hitter in HRC. Find the common ground between her and Obama to talk Big Picture on the extreme need for a health care fix *now*, and don't worry too much about the details. Key things to hit would be that (i) this could have been fixed back in the 90s, (ii) the Republicans blocked it, (iii) healthcare cost have grown X% while wages have grown Y%, while (iv) Z% of adults have lost healthcare since then along with A% of children. There's a lot of ground to cover getting across The Problem that exists and the Committment the Dems have to solve it without getting into the Details.
I think I would open with the Economy, then hit Iraq and Foreign Policy, then hit Social Security/Medicre in the briefest segment, which leads naturally into health care as the closer. The Economy is Issue #1 for people, so it should lead off. But Obama and HRC sitting down to talk Healthcare is the "top draw" to hook people into sticking around. Webb, with Biden piling on, going fire & brimstone on how the Republicans have screwed things up is good Red Meat in the second segment. SS/Medicare is a bridge, expressing Dem committment to a key issue to a specific target group (not just retirees but *near* retirees who are seeing their 401K's tank) at a critical iss.
Anyway... an idea. ;) Plus this late in the game, if we're playing for Landslide & Coat Tails, we need to get over the Dem Brand and not just Obama. That the Dems have a *team* of leaders like Webb and HRC joining hands with Obama to build to the future, and not just "The One" that the wingnuts like to throw at him.
I'm not a huge fan of "profiles" and "canned" infomercials. I think they will invite people to flip away. I would avoid doing something like that. I would stick to "Live"... for whatever reason, that's what our country has become a junky of.
Stay away from the old Perot "I'm Doing A Show With A Lot Of Charts!" format. I'm a wonk, but am honest enough to know that the rest of the country isn't and that would sink.
I think those would be the formats I would stick with. Obama is great in speaches. I think he's perfectly fine answering questions from people. He also is good in give and take with his peers as we saw in some of the primary debates, and in this case it wouldn't be hostile.
Anyway... throwing shit out. ;)

Obama is ramping up advertising in a big way.
Here in Missouri I have seen 3 different Obama ads in the past half hour during local news.
The 30 sec "hanging by a thread" healthcare ad
The 1 minutes biography ad
and the 2 minute economic plan
Good stuff.

this is axelrod, 110%. beautiful.
i've said this elsewhere, but read david mendell's biography of obama. he gets into axelrod's strategy: laying down massive cash for ads weeks or months out from an election is a waste (that was in the case of a US senate primary -- this is a MUCH bigger deal, so you have to quadruple the time periods, i think). then, according to Axelrodian Theory, you absolutely FLOOD the airwaves in the week or two up to voting day. you blow the wad on advertising down the homestretch.
this is blowing the wad, right in the homestretch, presidential election style.
i fucking LOVE david axelrod.

You're right - Axelrod is a genius.
They all are - up to and including Michelle Obama - smartest damn bunch of people I've seen campaign.

LOL.
Joe Scarborough just said that "erratic" is an accurate label of McCain's behavior the last few weeks.

Oy vey! I was over at HuffPo - there's a slide show from the stock exchanges around the world today - reactions of traders and brokers and I wish I hadn't looked at it. You want to see a bunch of totally devastated guys? Jebus - especially in the pictures where you see their computer screens with line crashing through the earth's crust -
Since we're all going down at once, why can't we all just bottom it out, wipe it off and say OK, let's start over?
I mean, we all end up in the same place - they had a picture of a totally distraught Saudi Arabian stock trader - the whole world is in the same boat.
*sigh*

This is America, after all.
I remember back in the 80s being at a queer party one night when the Academy Awards, the last episode of "Brideshead Revisited," AND the NCAA final were all on TV at the same time. Fortunately there were three televisions in the house. I was the only guy who wanted to watch basketball. They almost took my gay ID card, I had to do some fast talking.

"Brideshead Revisited"? O I bet you did have to talk fast.

That's not exactly what people are saying, I think. We're more worried about it conflicting with the World Series for the only vaguely interested populace, who then have to make a choice as to what to watch. We'd prefer for the spot to reach as many people as possible, after all.

The Obama campaign has lots of money. I've received two donation requests from "Joe Biden" since the VP debate.
Oprah's hosting a $28,500 per plate fund raiser this month.
I don't really know if this is all necessary, but overkill in this campaign can't be a bad thing.
This is what the LA Times said in an opinion piece today:
What McCain doesn't seem to know -- yet -- is that he's a dead man walking. He'll learn it definitively on Nov. 4, when he's going to lose the election -- and the polls increasingly suggest that he'll lose big. The GOP as a whole will also lose big. We're in the middle of an epochal shift in U.S. politics. A global economic crisis, two wars and an ongoing nuclear and terrorist threat have left most Americans disgusted by the recklessness of free marketeers and by unilateralist, militarist approaches to foreign policy.
The era of GOP dominance of U.S. politics is over. McCain, the son and grandson of Navy admirals, wanted to be the Republican Party's "steady hand at the tiller." Now he's going down with the ship.

i know it would drive a lot of people here nuts, but do you think that, in addition to obama making his case, there will be interviews/vignettes with lots of influential, revered people, about why they are supporting obama? like maybe ... colin powell?

Speaking of being flush with cash, has anyone else started to see astroturf-like letters in their local newspapers from the right wing, claiming that most of the online donations coming to the Obama campaign are from Saudi Arabia and the middle east? And I thought inciting riots at their pep rallies was as low as McCain/Palin were stooping. I SO want it to be November 5!

Maybe he has to spend it to avoid giving it to Hillary?
Saturation baby, saturation. Endorsements would be really really fun also.
Kind of like how you know Bush has used TV to read his lies to us for like 8 years? I'm pretty sure he hasn't had to pay for any of it.
I can't wait to see Obama on my TV instead of Bush. Only McCain is worse than Bush to listen to, (I'm not his fucking 'friend' and I wish he'd quit saying it).
Not to mention the buyout of depressed mortgages to help 'Americans' - like who the fuck else are we helping - Canadian mortgages - British mortgages?
Even if Obama is totally full of shit AND a Manchurian Candidate, he's better than Bush and McCain to listen to or watch - I'd rather be lied to by someone charming and socially gifted, like Bill Clinton.
As I sit here at home in Wasilla, Alaska I'm hoping that Palin comes home and doesn't say a fucking word until the end of her term - I can't stand her 'accent' (as a lifelong Alaskan I don't know anyone who talks that way) not to mention her butchery of basic grammar - it gives me a headache - I can't believe her parents, (who are teachers) raised her to speak that way - like you know where else would she learn to talk strange in such a way - doggonit *wink - wink*... blech!
