Obama And McCain Trade New Attack Ads
The Obama and McCain campaigns have both announced new attack ads aganst each other this afternoon, a preview of what we can expect to see for the next month.
Here's the McCain ad, airing nationally, calling Obama a liar when he says he'll cut taxes for most people:
"At least Congressional liberals admit they want to raise your taxes," one of the announcers says. Thing is, this isn't true -- unless by "you" they mean this ad is only meant to be seen by people making over $250,000 per year. Obama and the Dems are promising tax reductions for pretty much everyone else.
Here's Obama's new ad, targeted to key states, continuing the day's theme of deconstrucitng McCain's position on health care tax credits, and saying it's McCain who would raise taxes on working people:
"McCain would make you pay income tax on your health insurance benefits. Taxing health benefits for the first time ever," the announcer says. "And that tax credit? McCain's own website said it goes straight to the insurance companies, not to you. Leaving you on your own to pay McCain's health insurance tax."

McCain's ad is just dumb and of course false. Notice how they are trying to "darken" Obama?

And the ominous music.
Why not just come out and say it? Repubs are for greed! Campaigning on greed.... for a worse tomorrow.

That was the very first thing that caught my eye. Reminiscent of that magazine cover of OJ back during his first trial of the century. These McCain people are setting new records for sleazy every say.

I heard someone say recently that they had seen Obama's face so much during the campaign that the color of it just didn't register anymore. I bet the mccain campaign is aware of this phenomenon and is trying to remind people.

I expect Obama to call out McCain in one of the next two debates on this tax lie. I also think Obama needs to hit back harder at it, really spell out what his plan is - maybe in one of those talk-to-the-camera ads, or maybe have testimonial ads with regular folks stating their income and how much they'll save under the Obama plan compared to the McCain plan.
This tax lie seems to be the only attack point McCain has left, because his gutter smears of course.
I want to see Obama call him out forcefully to have him own up to his lies.

Taxation and baby killing. Pretty soon they'll wrap those two together. What low-lifes!
October 3, 2008 2:29 PM | Reply | Permalink
Barack should play off the fact that McCain is afraid to look at him during the debate.
"Say it to my face, John. Look me in the eye and say that."
Much harder to lie about someone when they are standing in front of you. I don't think McCain has the cojones to do it.

That "Change is coming" at the end of McCain's ad make it like a bad movie preview. "McCain and Palin at theaters near you - January 2009."
I wonder if he contemplating riding PA Ave on inauguration day on a white horse, yelling "change is coming, change is coming!"

The Washington Times AND the WSJ agree with McCain? Shocking.
About time we just admitted the old guy's brilliance and just call this election for McCain.

Is this a sign of how out of touch the Republicans are this year? Not just McCain, but in a recent attack on Franken, a Coleman ad cited the New York Post. It's as if they can't tell that conservative media aren't credible sources. I also noticed the "liberal" slur. It's like they haven't figured out that liberal is now the political center.

I give up. Nevermind that McNuts' campaign is the scuzziest I've ever seen, it is ill conceived, poorly executed and managed by a bunch of toothless reprobates.

Why the difference in distribution?
It is more expensive to air something nationally, or in targeted regions?
Anyone know?

Oh, I get that. My question is this: which is cheaper? It seems to me that targeted ads in specific areas is a better approach compared to a one-size fits all national approach. So which one costs more?
I'm wondering about McCain/RNC cash flow.
October 3, 2008 2:57 PM | Reply | Permalink
The way they talked about congressional democrats part way into the ad makes me believe it is a "split ad" where the McCain Camp and the RNC are both paying for it, probably with the RNC paying more.
So McCain going halfsies is probably cheaper than spending in swing states by himself.

Doesn't that indicate a cash problem?

That McLame ad is stupid. It's a lot like one that is running here, but that one is even worse, they just don't show as much of Obama in the one here.
The one here is so heavy handed - really ominous music, many red and black graphics, and it's about GIGANTIC TITANIC COLOSSAL GOVERNMENT and TAXES!
This is the oldest rightwing smear against Democrats in the book.

Palin on Fox News has said Katie Couric annoyed her. Seems she was a tad bit PO'd that Couric kept a tight rein on her during the interview process. One of her complaints was that if she tried to change the subject of the question to one she felt the public wanted to hear, she got clobbered. Note she did exactly that last night during the debate.
She also indicated the type of questions she felt were fairer to ask would have been the ones which provided her an open window to bash Obama.
In short, the only fair questions to ask were those that allowed her to rant on about how good the McCain talking points were as a way to showcase the public her character and image while bashing Obama in between breaths.
October 3, 2008 2:53 PM | Reply | Permalink
Did she expect Couric to ask her "Tell me, Governor, how many different ways do you think Obama is going to ruin this country?"
I truly have been trying to give her the benefit of the doubt, but she really is an idiot.

The McCain ad stinks. The smell of desperation coming from the McCain campaign really is beginning to reek.
I'm thinking we've arrived at the point - a few weeks out from 11/4 with McCain apparently going down in flames, and O rising like the sun - that every move McCain makes only tightens the noose around his neck.
His coming off like a one-legged man in an ass-kicking contest.

I don't know about you, but after watching a series of McCain ads, I'm betting the addle brained amongst us are starting to believe Obama is an alien from outer space sent to destroy our planet.
How could he possibly be human with that lighting and background music?

I've lost all remaining respect for McCain with this racist-baiting ploy. Let's stir up any racist tendencies among the voters, shall we? We don't need that sentiment to get even worse, if you know what I mean.

I certainly noticed the deeper shades of gray and black tones.
I've talked to many folks around here about the fact that if not black, Obama would win by a landslide. Too bad most cant put race aside for a change.
McCain is a desperate old man that would sell his soul to the Devil just to win. Palin? Who knows. Best Cheerleader maybe?

Yes, they are demonizing Obama by trying to make him look like OJ and scare easily intimidated white people. I suspect we will be seeing a lot more "blame the darkie" gambits as we get down to the wire, for instance that minorities are responsible for Wall Street's F-up. It's just terrorism in another form and unspeakably despicable. The Republican Party has irretrievably lost its way and must now be deemed a cancer on our society.

This is so low. It just plays to blatant racism and antiquated prejudice. Who cares what shade his skin is? Obama has a brilliant mind and a calm temperament and can dance rings around the opposition, who is apparently getting desperate if you judge by the ads his campaign runs.

As someone who worked for years in national politics, but also as a part-time theologian, I have two observations. First, if memory serves, the 2002 Clinton/Gore campaign televised a one-half hour ad that closed with a slow-motion shot of Clinton and Gore in shirt sleeves. In the background, the closing tune from the movie The Natural played, and the slogan posted was "The Change is Coming." McCain's ad guys just took out the article.
Second, as a theologian, I find this slogan slightly messianic, which would fit in with the right-wing fundamentalists -- not all fundamentalists are right-wingers -- who await the parousia or the Second Coming of Christ. Maybe I am reading too much into this, but given Palin's fundamentalist leanings and the GOP track record of exploiting such fundamentalism, it would not surprise me that such messianism is a not-so-subtle part of McCain's campaign strategy.

John McCain has lost it, though I don't know how much of it he ever had; 'it' being all touch with reality. He is pathetically pathologically obsessed with getting that pat on the head, "You did good Johnny. We like you".
Watch him when he gives his readings; he doesn't do speeches. They had to go back to putting his notes (only in Senator McCain's case it is more likely the whole speech, in large print) on his lectern because he was so terrible at using teleprompters. I will have to admit, watching him look down for the next few words he is to speak (sometimes a sentence, sentence and a half, even two sentences) is not nearly as painful as watching his attempts at using teleprompters.
After he delivers the "punch line", the "hook", ever so seriously,he looks up with that big grin, "Didn't I do good. I did it!".
And finally, I think I may have figured out the real reason John McCain picked Sarah Palin as his running partner (given his history, I was a bit uncomfortable with running mate). He needed someone who can stand up in front of the whole world and tell a ball faced lie, knowing it is a bald face lie and not caring, as good as he can.
