New Obama Ad Sketches His American Story
With the McCain campaign working overtime to sow doubts about Obama's patriotism, otherness, and alleged ties to terrorists, Mark Halperin reports that Obama is going up with this soft-focus biographical spot wholly focused on sketching his American story:
The ad features Obama recalling waving a "little American flag" while going to see returning astronauts with his grandfather, who fought in Patton's army; his grandmother's work on a bomber assembly line; and his mother's efforts to instill in him "American" values of hard work, honesty, self-reliance, and faith
"That's the country I believe in," Obama concludes. Details of the ad buy weren't immediately available.

It's old stuff to us, but doggonit, this is going to play a lot better in the heartland than yet another McLame ad about Obama having the most liberal voting record in the senate, yadda yadda yadda.
Yadda?

Seriously, this is a good move by Obama. Some people still think he's a Muslim, still think he's foreign and just don't know him at all, except for the rumors they've heard.
While some of those people may be unreachable, this ad is a good start at dispelling the myths.

Exactly. No black people could be seen in the entire ad. It's not dishonest it's but unfortunate that it's necessary. If that's what it takes to counter the increasing racism whipped up by the panicky McCain/Palin team. I doubt the Palin fanatics would be swayed by an Obama ad but the Undecideds-leaning-toward_Obama may need to be reassured that Obama's not the Scary Black Outsider.
It's an upstream swim given the relentless Fox News propaganda and daily Palin news grabbing.

Hey, as a fellow racially mixed person I want to point something out. Sorry to get sentimental or preachy, but I'm a bit tired of the race issue being simplified as a black/white zero-sum thing. I'd even say that's totally contrary to American values.
I don't think Obama is emphasizing his whiteness and deemphasizing his blackness in a zero sum manner. That's really missing it.
He's reminding there's a lot of depth to him and an ability to see beyond narrow stereotypes. I think he's making the point that the total is greater than the sum of the parts. And that's the essence of America.
America isn't great because of any one ethnic group. It's great because all of them have a place to come together and mix to inspire and learn from each other.
That includes Obama's white relatives from Kansas and a wholesome as apple pie American experience which might not be apparent on the surface. But intertwined with that is always the fact that his father was from Kenya who aspired to be Western educated, contribute to his community and live a better life. And Barack received opportunities in the US he wouldn't have in most places.
That's truly the American dream because we're all immigrants and our culture is a hybrid mixture that has produced incredible ferment and innovation, inspiring the world through much of the 20th century as a result.
So let's please drop this black/white zero sum look at race. In fact, we're all ethnically mixed because we're a polyglot culture. It's not either/or, it's both and all of the above. That's a beautiful thing.

I agree with you completely.
But the majority is still white even if they are mixed-white races. With that said ~ they need to feel less threaten by someone like Obama. It's really unfortunate but it's the only way for some of them to feel comfortable with voting for him. People in general are afraid of change even if its good for them. It's a weird comfort zone sort of thing. They don't want to think about racism. Subconsciously, it's better to ignore it then to face it. I really wish it wasn't necessary for Obama to do this kind of ad but it's the only way to "calm the waters."
But let it be clear, it is McCain/Palin who are creating the situation that makes Obama compelled to address this the best way he can. I applaud Obama for not ignoring McCain/Palin's appalling actions. People do react to fear so Obama had no choice if he wants to win. That's my opinion.

It does matter in the sense that, having a white mother and black father, shaped how he views the world. Whites cancan take comfort in the fact that he has as much of a connection to them as he does to African Americans. Even larger in some ways, because he was raised by whites, his mother and grandparents and had a loving relationship with them.

It is indeed a shame that Obama name's and color can make a person decide against him. I know this works for a certain wing of the republican base but will the people who are thoughtful enough not to blindly side with a party and intelligent enough to actually listen to Obama?

Excellent ad!
Obama needs to show everybody who he is and where he came from. He's just not African-American, he's part Irish and a few other things as well; n short, he's bi-racial.
People need to be reminded of this, especially the low info swing undecided.
Here's a little snippet from today's Columbus paper, in particular, check out the last paragraph:
One party had beer. The other had prayer.
But both groups of central Ohio debate-watchers were adamant about supporting their favorite in last night's presidential debate.
The groans, cheers, boos and applause from a decidedly liberal crowd of about 200 flowed as freely as the beer on tap at Studio 35, where Sen. Barack Obama drew rave reviews for his performance.
As with many events at the historic single-screen theater, the debate had the feel of a neighborhood block party. Attendees laughed, hugged and enjoyed a few beers together, while popcorn popped, and boxes of pizza -- and a few local candidates -- streamed through the front door.
Like the rowdy, overflow vice presidential watch party the week before, the gathering was organized by a loose-knit group of neighbors calling themselves the Lower Clintonville Democratic Club.
"There is excitement, enthusiasm and energy in watching a debate with a crowd of people," said group organizer David Vottero as others stood behind tables, selling raffle tickets and other items where proceeds will be donated to Obama's campaign. "It's like watching a game."
Alessa Smith, 28, of the Short North, agreed.
"I need some humor with my politics and this is a very liberal gathering," she said.
On Obama, she added: "He would handle the conflict in the Middle East better because he is more concerned with diplomacy instead of sending in troops to kill everyone."
The audience was not shy about letting its opinions be known.
Andrew Sacher, 33, of Victorian Village, shouted out "mission accomplished!" as Obama criticized Republican Sen. John McCain's judgment in supporting the Iraq War.
Obama drew major cheers when he told McCain that his Straight Talk Express had lost a wheel, when he suggested that AIG officials who took a $400,000 retreat should be fired, and when he said he didn't understand why we invaded a country that had nothing to do with 9/11.
The biggest laugh came from the curious look on Obama's face as McCain accused him of wanting to raise taxes.
The crowd let out serious jeers when McCain talked about suspending his campaign to deal with the Wall Street crisis, supporting nuclear power, and when he simply mentioned the name of Ronald Reagan.
Rob Schmidley, 50, of Clintonville, gave Obama the debate victory.
"I think he (Obama) is showing more poise and clarity of thought," he said. "It's classic Obama."
At the McCain debate-watching party in Upper Arlington, just as Tom Brokaw appeared, host Marie Adamo quickly turned down the sound on the flat-screen television in her family room, next to a poster on "The Mysteries of the Rosary," to offer a quick prayer for the Arizona senator: "I just pray that John McCain knocks it out of the ballpark and that he really, really gets the point across that he's the best candidate."
After a quick plea to St. Michael to watch over McCain, most of the two-dozen-plus jammed into the room crossed themselves and the sound of the Fox broadcast came back on.
So did the sound in the room.
Hardly an Obama statement went by that wasn't challenged by one of the watchers.
"That's not the question he asked," various folks would cry when Obama's answer dragged on.
"The problem is people confuse eloquence with intelligence. That's what this is," remarked Gary Balser, a campaign volunteer from Hilliard.
When Obama asserted he would cut more than he would spend, Mindy Blackwell, attending with a daughter who is a first-time voter, couldn't hold back: "He's so lying! How can he stand up there and lie like that?"
And when Obama said he's for nuclear power, there were shouts of "liar!"
"He is a consummate liar," said Sheila Bello of the Catholic Coalition for McCain-Palin.
But when McCain started chewing on Obama for taking campaign contributions from Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae, there was applause and exhortations to "hit him!"
Adamo said she is backing McCain because "he's going to be a president that our allies trust and our enemies fear."
Obama, on the other hand "is hanging around with terrorists, avowed terrorists."
"We will work our fingers to the bone to make sure America is educated about this," Adamo promised.
The self-described "pro-life" Catholic mother of five questions Obama's stance in favor of abortion rights. Noting a disproportionate number of women who get abortions are black, she wondered, "Where is his pride in his people?"
--------
"his people?"
"his people?"
As a Catholic, I'm offended by the words and behavior of these wingnut Catholics. Their judgmental epithets are as un-Christian as you can get.

I don't think Obama will go after the Bush White House though, he'd burn too much political capital and I'd rather he spend that looking forward. I want universal health care, and a renewable energy policy and a return to the rule of law.

October 8, 2008 8:13 PM | Reply | Permalink
Bush was re-elected in 2004, long after most folks who were paying any attention knew Bush lied to go into Iraq.
Now if there was strong Republican support, I'd definitely go for it. I highly doubt they'd want to air their laundry however if they really want to tear down and rebuild their party, going after the Bush White House would be a helluva way to do it.
I think it would be virtually impossible with so many legal challenges and such - I echo your outrage, but I don't think it's realistically doable.
The best revenge is a life well lived. Passing universal healthcare once and for all, passing a strong renewable energy plan with the new Congress that the disastrous Bush years made happen would be the best we can hope for.
October 8, 2008 8:31 PM | Reply | Permalink
It's the legal challenges that is the crux. If a low-key investigation uncovers a smoking gun, e.g. email from Cheney saying let's lie to the Americans so we can go to war, then the Repubs will bend to public outrage, just as with Watergate.

He would of been ok if he didn't have his uniform on... but he did, which is using his official status to influence a election.
"If the Merit Systems Protection Board finds that the violation warrants dismissal from employment, the employing agency must either remove the employee or forfeit a portion of the federal assistance equal to two years salary of the employee."
So it really depends if the Merit Systems Protection Board does it job, if it does this guy will most likely be forced to resign.

Fear and Loathing in the Town Hall: A Predictive Fantasy
(The camera looks at the hall from above, into the hall, from the POV of the stage. Red meat has been hung from the walls and rafters, along with dollar bills which, upon closer inspection, are prop money.
The crowd is seated. They are strangely quiet. Their manner is that between those who are waiting for their instructions, post-op surgical recoverees, and post-war survivors. They are slightly slumped, in the same posture.
The candidates enter from opposite sides of the rear of the stage and walk to their podiums. The crowd rises as one and cheers with a loud, aggressive fervor reflective of their desperation.
Obama is standing tall in stride, looking a bit overcome by the experience, although genuine. McCain is smiling--his cheerful public grimace, although there is some genuine pleasure. His eyes have the slightest glaze of a gradually oncoming fog.)
MODERATOR: Tonight is a different format--one where you, the public, can ask your questions directly to the candidates. None of the questions have been screened in advance, and the candidates have been given no advance notice of what the questions, or who the questioners, might be. And with that, we begin. Our first question:
CITIZEN 1: My name is Jan, I'm from Murfreesboro? I've been watching the news, and I'm scared. I can't say that I've listened much about the stock market before? But I know that it's going down, and that's bad. I don't know what's going to happen to my job, or my house, or my kids. My question is for Mr. McCain? What will you do to help us understand what is going on, and to make it clear just what you will do about it?
(Crowd applauds vigorously as Jan sits down with a bit of embarrassment).
MCCAIN: (Holding the top of the rostrum with both hands and smiling): Well, first, I want to welcome each of you here tonight. You know, I know what each of you are feeling. I think that each of you must be scared--as I am, of not verifying myself in my father's and my grandfather's eyes. But, that's not so important today--or, at least saying it isn't. What is most important is to appear that I understand an economy that just months ago I said that I had little understanding of at all. I want to win. I need it, frankly, as a way of overcoming my own personal horrors and demons, of overcoming the anger that was bestowed and thrust, unwillingly, upon me. And that's why I'm still willing, even as the sharpest edges of mental function fade, to propel myself through this mass of insult. I understand how to respond to insult. With anger. And impulse. And that's what I'll bring to the White House, come January of 2009.
(Crowd applauds vigorously)
MODERATOR: The next question is for Senator Obama.
CITIZEN 2: Thanks. My name is Ross, from Shreveport. First-time caller, long-time listener. My question is: Senator Obama, it's not an error that you were given the middle name "Barack". We know that that is the same name of the murderous. Communist leader of Iran--and that's no accident. (A slight murmur from the crowd. The moderator looks vaguely stunned, but does not interrupt). Now, when you were going to Russia, with Bill Ayers, and dodging the draft--just like William Jefferson Clinton--(speaking more quickly now, more aggressively, turning to the crowd)--why weren't you here at home, saving our banks from the Liberals and the Socialists who want to take our money away from us and just give it to the terrorists?
SARAH PALIN: (Poking her head out from the wings, with a big smile): You betcha'!
(She withdraws).
OBAMA: Well. First of all, I also want to welcome you all here tonight. You know, I know that this is a difficult time. Many of you are worried about your jobs, your families, your homes. There are times that test a man's soul, and every woman's as well. And I know that this may be one of those times. I can understand why you would be frightened, even angry at what this nation has done. But we are a nation that has risen up in adversity even in the best of times, we found our strength, and honor, and courage, our ability to work as one, when faced with the most difficult situations. And I want to call on each of you, in that spirit of patriotic sacrifice, to join with me in that effort in the days ahead.
(Silence. Then applause, as the recognition of actual thought begins to spread through the crowd. It swells, and finally, subsides).
MODERATOR: The next question is for Senator McCain.
CITIZEN 3 (He is a man who appears to be in his early 40's wearing blue jeans that are stiff and obviously brand-new. They are perfectly creased. He is wearing a tight fitting, also obviously new T-Shirt that says "Average American...And Black With Rage!" beneath which is an American flag. He is wearing black wing-tip shoes. ). Senator McCain, I'm just an average American, just an average Joe, just your Average Joe-Sixpack (Blackberry begins ringing)...Oh...
excuse me...just...a...sec...my boss's phone...(whispering tensely into phone:) "No...I said sell. Sell. Yes, the entire portfolio. No, not Ghanan timber, for god's sake, gold, the lot of it. Jesus H....(tucks Blackberry back into pants pocket and then readjusts his stance to that of average Joe, slumping to one side again and changing his voice back to it's original tenor). Like I said, just an average Joe Sixpack. And I'm wonderin'. I heard what Mr. Hussein just said about "rising up", and I'm wonderin' if that's exactly what he wants to do! Oh, sure, he wants us to band together to rise up--where have we heard that before? Socialists! That's what they do! (crowd begins to murmur, and in the rising heat, the smell of the fresh meat begins to waft faintly through the hall). Rise up! That's what he wants to do! Well, we need to rise up! Against those kind of Socialist, Communist, Fascist, Atheist, Marxist policies! (the crowd is talking, some nodding their heads). And so what I want to ask you, Sen. McCain (crowd quiets), as an average everyday American, is this: What is it like, being a fighter pilot and all, when you know that Barack Hussein was out there, palling around with his Communist friends?
MCCAIN: Well, my friend--and by that, I mean that all of you are my friends--I'm glad you asked. Not everyone has had the luxury of gaining an education merely on the basis of their own talent, or the opportunity to travel the world learning how to be separate from important family members without their having significant pull, or to be able to experience the variety of foods that one has the chance to consume when they are paid for by the State. And, I can say that, in that way, I haven't been quiet as lucky. But I will say this--I will not look such fortune in the face and say: 'Fine, I'll work on education with the Bill Ayers of this world', "I'll be at the top of my class at Harvard", when I can be down, down there with you at the bottom! I know what it's like to be at the bottom when I've had all the opportunities--and I want to share that experience with those of you who have had none. You're angry. I'm angry. We have that in common. Let's be angry together, satisfied that, for another for four years, we've put those who have the arrogance to think for extended periods in their place, content in knowing that we're right--even if we're wrong.
CITIZEN 4: Hiya. My name is George, from Midland, altho' some would say Kennebunkport, heh, heh. I have a question for ya, John, and it's this. Listen: I'm goin' to be out of a job soon. Oil futures aren't lookin' that good, and I've got to tell ya', I didn't have too much luck there in the first place. So I'd like to ask ya, one flyin' man to another--what do you think I oughta do?
PALIN: (emerges from wings with purposeful strides to McCain's podium): I've got to take this one, John. Mr. Bush, if you can't figure out what you want to do after you leave and we move in, take a little time off, and then you come right up to Alaska. They love hunting just like you--and you can fly, you can learn to do it from a plane! The pipeline's big enough for any number of mistakes. So you come up here when you're finished--we've got plenty of bars with plenty of bowls of nuts and plenty of televisions right on Wasilla Main street--we'll take care of you right!
(Bush smiles and sits, crowd applauds, Palin, smiling and waving, exits).
CITIZEN 5: Well, look. This is a serious question. I'm John, from Carpenter. It's for both of you. I've got two kids, 4 and 6, a boy and a girl--so sweet. You know. My wife, she was working for the WaMu branch, center of town. It's closing next week. She's been looking in the ads, the newspapers, online--nothing. It's all she can do to keep a smile on her face for the kids. Myself, I built a commerical trucking business from the ground up. Sixteen years. Sweat everyday, grease on my hands, I can never get it out. We were never rich, but I made a good living. I didn't know about investing--who does, you're not born with it! Anyway, I went to an investment advisor, it seemed like the safe thing to do, protect the kids, plan for the future, not use my own dumb head (smiles). Well, he was so smart, and he was so sure, and he had it all planned out. And it looked so impressive on paper. Now--all of a sudden--it's gone. Everything is changing. It's changing so quickly. It seems like nobody--nobody knew. Not even the people who were supposed to! Everybody was talkin', makin noise, thinkin' of one thing: Themselves, themselves, themselves. Never worrying to think about someone else, about the future, about the next moment.
Well, now the next moment is here. And I wanna know--what are the two of you really going to do about it?
(The room is quiet as his last word echoes in the hall. The raw meat is rocking, slowly in the air, and the paper bills are gently fluttering). You can see Palin in profile, standing in the wings, holding her chin in her hand. The two candidates stare straight ahead, holding the podium. They are silent).

Some Obama surrogates need to go on the attack by raising more forcefully the Keating Five scandal and Sarah Palin's much closer association (than Obama's with Ayers) with the secessionist party (her husband was a member of the party until only a few years ago).
From the undecided voters that I have talked to, I have this feeling that Obama's lack of experience is a big hurdle. Obama should not just talk about issues but also who he is as a potential leader. He must do the following:
- play up/ clarify his record, including his vote on energy bill, taxes, and military funding support, as well as his bipartisan records.
- play up the star quality of his team of economic policy advisers, especially folks like Warren Buffet.
- seek endorsement from more national security and foreign policy heavyweights.
- start floating possible cabinet picks, especially secretary of state, defense secretary, treasury secretary and national security adviser.

Dude, he's ahead. You're acting like he's losing. Calm down and recognize that he's gotten this far because he and his campaign know what they're doing. This isn't Kerry or Gore. He's ahead in electoral votes and it's now his to lose.

You play the game different when you're ahead in football game by 17 points in the fourth quarter than when you're behind by 17. Obama and company are in control of the message.

I think that's what I'm loving most about this campaign. They started out getting flustered every now and then, but ever since it's been cool as cucumbers.
You saw the clip of the Obama spokesperson being asked what the campaign thought of the ugly slurs coming out at the Palin rallies? The guy basically shrugged and said, "Hey, it's not really important, and they probably didn't hear that anyway." Didn't try to score any traditional political jab-points, just used the question as an excuse to run a quick verbal Obama ad and smile for the cameras.
They're in control. This latest ad just goes to show... They've been anticipating the big issues and the wall street crisis finished things off.
Now I'm just morbidly refreshing my TPM window every hour or so to catch the latest McCain death throes. It makes me happy.
And hell... I'm not even American.

Barack really looks like his mom,,, now more than as a youngster. Neither his mom nor his father were tall, wonder where that comes from,,,, eating his Wheaties?

Interesting point.
Switched at birth?
Time to have a closer look at the birth certificate fiction once again wouldn't you say?

On average anyone born before 1970, at least, has been taller than their parents. If the difference is huge (Obama is not that tall), the most likely explanation is that his father's growth had been further affected by malnourishment and/or illness.

Borkaw was a bit on edge last night and know i know why. Apparently the ratings for MTP is tanking since he took over.

Watching him on Morning Joe, he seem a bit more objective and less in the tank for John McCain.

He probably got his feelings hurt by McCain's quip about not making him Treasury Secretary.

I know I don't like being called an financial idiot on a show seen globally (whether true or not).

I like the ad, too. It's old news to the die-hards, but should play well on networks.
Slightly off-topic: has anyone else been following Obama's InTrade numbers? Holy moly!

LOL!
O'Reilly just said that McCain's "last hope" is to name Giuliani as his AG and Romney as his Treasury Secretary.
HAHAHAHAHA

That's a last hope noone can believe in.

It never hurts to be reminded of Obama's remarkable story, but how sad he must do this in response to racist smears/lies by a major American party's candidates for president & vice-president. Now, for some reason, reading your post suddenly reminds me of the fact that McScum is a copycat... I wouldn't be surprised to see a POWPOWPOW ad coming from his campaign.
(... then again, he may not have enough $$$ to copycat anymore).

Did anyone here see the Daily Show a couple weeks back where they held a "focus group" of elderly voters and one old Jewish lady whispered to her husband that Michelle "has a big tuchus."
Hilarious.
October 8, 2008 9:17 PM | Reply | Permalink
Yes - I thought she said: She's a horse - she's so big.
But I think you have it right cause her husband was trying to explain the physical anthropology involved.
October 8, 2008 9:29 PM | Reply | Permalink
Yeah, she said that too. That was less endearing, though, I thought.
October 8, 2008 9:36 PM | Reply | Permalink
Agreed.
But I took it exactly as it was - the kind of thing my mother might have said at that age a little loudly and would have meant it in the most harmless way possible.
