New Obama Ad In South Stars Bluegrass Legend Saying Obama Is "A Good Man"

Now this is a good ad. A Virginia Democrats sends over a new radio spot that Obama is airing in the southern part of the state -- it stars homegrown bluegrass legend Ralph Stanley vouching for Obama's values and character to the tune of some banjo pickin' in the background.

Give it a listen:

"Howdy, friends. This is Ralph Stanley, and I think I know a little something about the families around here," the spot runs.

"Barack'll cut taxes for everyday folks -- not big business -- so you'll have
a little more money in your pocket at the end of the year," he continues. "I also know Barack is a good man. A father and devoted husband, he values personal responsibility and family first."

The spot -- a sign of the times if there ever was one -- is the latest in an increasingly micro-targeted air war that's hitting radio waves across the country.

I assume this won't be in heavy rotation on the local R&B station....

user-pic

It'll run in heavy rotation in every R&B station in Southwest Virginia. ;-)

Granted, my recollections of the state are twenty years old, but back when I was a student at the University of Richmond, I had a few friends in that area- Abingdon, Bristol, Grundy- and there were gospel stations, country stations and news/talk. Roanoke may have had a top-40 station, but it didn't carry particularly well into some of the valleys which dominate the region.

Gotta give it to the Obama campaign they are dam good.

user-pic

Smart. Very Smart.

Oh hell yeah.

When you consider this ad to the fact that a WV miner's union protested by skipping work today (in response to the owners allowing the NRA onto their worksite to try and get some disparaging comments regarding Obama from the workers AFTER the union has already endorsed him), maybe the MSM is wrong about the broad support Obama has. We cannot get complacent, but folks, we might be heading for a landslide.

Putting judgment of others aside, Obama may have a chance in places WV and southern Ohio as people have time to become "comfortable" with the "idea" of Obama as president. Only time will tell.

Case in point, Georgia in the last four polls from oldest to newest: +13, +11, +8, and today +6.

He got more votes in Georgia during the primary than the top two republicans combined. This was early in the process, too. I think there are a number of states that might be competitive that no one is talking about now.

Nice. Very nice.

user-pic

Yep. Not a gamechanger, but definitely a day-lifter!

"Obama will cut taxes for everyday folks, not big bidness"!!!

I love it!

Good stuff!

I have followed this election closely. This is my first comment to a blog this cycle. I'm struck by two things by this radio ad. First, Ralph Stanley is a legend and any candidate would be honored with his endorsement. Second, the fact that the Obama campaign understands the stature of Ralph Stanley in our world and certainly in SW Virginia specifically and solicited this ad encourages me tremendously that the campaign is on the right track towards winning this election. The importance of this ad exceeds Obama's current favorable poll status because polls go up and down but good decisions about the campaign can be made everyday. This is a good decision.

user-pic

Thanks for the insight!

user-pic

and solicited this ad

What if the singer "offered" his services? I would bet he did!

He may well have. Dr. Ralph is a lifelong Democrat who has often stumped for Democratic candidates. Yet another reason to love him.

Agreed - this is gold in WNC. Along with Obama prepping for the Nashville debate here in Asheville, they're putting some good energy into the mountains for sure.

user-pic

Thank you for sharing.

I love it. Stuff like this provides confirmation to small town voters who are leaning Obama but are afraid of being lone voices.

Besides, Ralph is an awesome musician.

This made my day. Wow.

This could be a strong tactic in the last days of of the campaign. Targeted vouching radio ads. It's an extension of neighbor to neighbor canvassing in a way. Taking a local icon and having them personally vouch for Obama could be really effective.

user-pic

They could turn them into phone calls as well.

I once got a robo call from Muhammad Ali campaigning for one of the Shriver's in Maryland. Best phone campaign endorsement ever. "...vote for Mark Shriver or I will knock you out..." I swear to god.

I wonder if Mr. Stanley will get the Dixie Chicks/Toby Keith treatment...

Never! Stanley is older and better respected than any of the simpletons that roughed up the Dixi Chicks. If TK had the audacity to go off on a rant about Stanley he'd be the one getting black balled!

Keith is now an Obama supporter and, apparently, a Democrat:
"I think he's the best Democratic candidate we've had since Bill Clinton. And that's coming from a Democrat."

user-pic

What happened to the DC was disgraceful. But you're comparing apples and oranges. They were harrassed because they came out against the war and Bush while overseas. Stanley is simply endorsing a candidate. I'm sure there are some rednecks who won't like it but if any radio stations, etc tried to start a boycott of him, it would be a disaster. Stanley is doing the same thing Ricky Scaggs does, except for a Democrat.

user-pic

"Rednecks"? What kinda cracker is that?

user-pic

They were harassed because they came out against the war (and Bush). Where they did so was irrelvant; it was an added BS "point" slung by the anti-American book-burners who are for war in every instance.

I was just thinking about the Dixie Chicks the other day. They aren't really my taste in music, but man, did they ever put themselves out there. I mean, they did it when NOBODY else did. No one questioned the war at that time in a public setting. Not the MSM, not other Democrats, not anyone that would get some attention. I will forever be a fan of the DC's for this very reason. Talk about goin' out and growin' some.

user-pic

No disrespect to the Dixie Chicks, but don't forget Howard Dean. Nobody was more outspoken than he was. God bless him, he was right.

Thank you Ralph. I have always been a big fan of the Clinch Mountain Boys.

Check out some Bluegrass. It is great energetic stuff. It is really an offshoot of Celtic Trad.

Try Del McCoury for some authentic High Lonesome sounds.

While you are at it; do yourselves a favor and check out the music of Hank Williams Sr. He was a genius. One Irish musician dubbed Hank as: The Hillbilly Shakespeare.

user-pic

RALPH STANLEY!

He's a legend - a real one. One of the original great bluegrass masters. He's the real deal. I really got choked up listening to this.

He's highly known and respected in his community. I tip my hat to him. What a great ad.

An 80 year old bluegrass legend from Southwestern Virgina endorsing a black man for President of the United States.

Think about that.

Great song:

user-pic

Here's to hoping that this ad will help Barack win Virginia, leading to us no longer being the country of constant sorrow.

I saw him play around 2002, and bought a "Ralph Stanley for President" bumper sticker.

If you don't know him, don't dismiss him as some old bluegrass hick. He is a legend to certain cultures.

Absolutely the single best ad of the campaign. Ralph Stanley is utterly impeachable. I would've bet a thousand bucks he'd be voting McCain; the fact he cut an ad for Obama blows my mind. Dr. Stanley, as he calls himself, is a true American original and a musical giant, even if he's unknown to most folks. Fan-freakin-tastic!

Hear, hear. This is truly fantastic. I'll have to pick up a couple of Clinch Mountain Boys CDs in appreciation.

That was pretty awesome. That's the kind of cool, collected voice that connects with the people this ad is targeting. Not to mention the accent. This has got to be one of the best radio ads I've heard all year, if not the very best.

mmmm and Gallup already stopped swinging back to McCain with Obama holding his number at 48 and McCain dropping to 43.

I'm having trouble downloading the ad or finding a direct link. Any help?

user-pic

Click on it in the post. Then you'll see this little line. It's a radio spot. At least it was for me. You need to click on the "line" of the radio spot.

Try that!

Outstanding endorsement from an American legend. And it just reminded me of a tune I heard at a concert in Chicago last week.

"When I grow up I want a baby
I'm gonna name it after Ralph Stanley
And I sure won't mind if it cries all night
Just as long as it looks like me"

Kasey Chambers, "Pony" from "Wayward Angel" CD

Fun Fact: Ralph Stanley did the singing voice of the Klan Grand Wizard in "O Brother Where Art Thou" -- that eerie rendition of "O Death" is him. This endorsement has a particular beauty to it.

user-pic

I does.

That song always send chills up my spine. God I love that movie -

user-pic

That is so beautiful!

user-pic

I'm laughing and laughing - I love this spot and I think it's brilliant. But I was just reading last night about Jigga making a big appearance for Barack, who is one of his biggest fans. (he has good taste in music, too.)

How 'bout this one?!?!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KTkqosRiyYo
A Fox News reporter visits a Scranton, PA diner and calls for a show of hands for McCain vs. Obama...

user-pic

I've seen it on Olbermann and it's one of the funniest vids ever!!!!

I like the little old lady in the background pushing down her husbands(?) arm when he tries to signal voting for mcangry.

YES!! DR. RALPH! YES! And targeted to VA. My god. That is probably the smartest political ad I've ever heard, and I'm not exaggerating.

I'm with a band that has opened for Ralph on several occasions, and that man has soul.

Ralph Stanley: I am a man of constant sorrow.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GBDe7rySveQ&feature=related

geezus what a face on that man ... riveting

This one is a real winner!

user-pic

"... he values personal responsibility..."
Unless he forced a bank to give someone a loan that they couldn't afford (or even qualify for under normal circumstances), then he'll ask "families from around here" to pay for it. That's change you can believe in.

user-pic

I see you came in off the ledge.

Come in to watch the debate - did you?

LOLZ, your segue to your (insane) talking points are shmooooove, daddy-o!

user-pic

Glad you liked it...

This is huge. This could be a game changer, and not only for this year. It could be a step toward making middle-class southerners Democrats again.

For those who don't remember how it used to be, here is a lyric from Alabama's "Song of the South":

Daddy was a veteran, a southern democrat
They oughta get a rich man to vote like that.

user-pic

O wouldn't that be nice -

I wouldn't wax quite that euphoric, but if this strategy keeps up you can count on Obama harvesting more smalltown and rural votes not just in Virginia but in Ohio and other nearby swing states.

We may not take the small towns, but just narrowing the margin a little bit there will give Obama the state. In Ohio in 2004 Kerry overperformed in the cities but he didn't just lose the rural areas, he got absolutely creamed there. Obama's making sure that's not going to happen again.

Hell yes! Once again, Obama's playin chess. Ralph Stanley carries more weight with rural Virginians than every belly-crawlin GOP nut-job in D.C. I was raised on bluegrass and country music and have loved Ralph since I could crawl, but this just blows my mind................Yes We Can!

Oh, wow.

I'm not a fan of Bluegrass -- where I live (Western NC) there's just too damn much of the stuff -- but this ad is frickin' amazing. I got all teary-eyed. This campaign is helping to retore my faith in America. And Americans. Well, U.S. Americans, anyway (h/t Miss Teen USA).

No kidding. Amazing ad.

Haha. Wish I was in a place where there's "too damn much of this stuff". Wanna trade domiciles?

user-pic

This election is shrinking the country. We now all feel the pain of people in Alaska (thank you, mudflats!). We feel solidarity with the coal miners. And the people of West Virginia - through this musician.

I can feel us coming together. Through the rallies. Through the videos. The songs. This is a beautiful moment.

I was, like, "THAT Ralph Stanley???" This is just awesome!

Just how absolutely cool is that? And Ralph is a legend in that part of the country, that will carry some serious weight.

If Obama wins, I'd love to see Ralph sing in association with the inaugural celebration.

Ah, not to one-up everybody, but:

Imagine seeing Ralph Stanley standing on the stage of the acoustically amazing Ryman Auditorium. No mic. Lit by a single spotlight, singing O Death. Still gives me chills just to remember it.

This is an amazing ad, and I hope the campaign continues in this vein. I love the fact that they have not written these people off; they just keep impressing me with their good judgement.

Nice, but McGoo will lock up the Swedish vote when ABBA does their commercial for him.

user-pic

LOL!

How about "Take a chance on me"..........

Ralph Stanley is more than just a great musician. His voice is to bluegrass what Muddy Waters' was to blues - the very archetype of the style.

That is one great radio ad. Ralph Stanley's voice carries some weight in those parts.

If Obama is playing offense in "Macaca land", he's moving in for the kill in Virginia.

It's getting difficult to resist the temptation to celebrate.

before, through turbulent times at the start of Sept., the Obama machine was steady, unfazed.

now, with the wind at its back, this campaign is hitting all the notes.

to echo some previous posts, I think good decisions and execution like this ad are more encouraging signs than daily tracking polls.

I fully believe this campaign is headed to victory on election day.

Fantastic! I'm from western PA ... love bluegrass so I didn't need much of an excuse, but I just bopped over to Amazon MP3 and downloaded his 'Best of ...'. The 'O Brother Where Art Thou' sound track is one of my top ten favorites.

I think this is a very effective way to get the message out ... step past the mainstream media crap and find the voices that connect to specific communities. This is great.

OK. Get up and dance in Honor of Dr. Ralph Stanley.

It's a party, folks! A Democratic Party!!!

Long time TPM reader, first time poster.

The song in the background, btw, is called "Rank Stranger". Likely to be familiar to some of the local radio audience.

I wandered again to my home in the mountains
Where in youth's early dawn I was happy and free
I looked for my friends, but I never could find them
I found they were all rank strangers to me
Everybody I met (everybody I met)
Seemed to be a rank stranger (seemed to be a rank stranger)
No mother nor dad (no mother or dad)
Not a friend could I see (not a friend could I see)
They knew not my name (they knew not my name)
And I knew not their faces (and I knew not their faces)
I found they were all (I found they were all)
Rank strangers to me (rank strangers to me)
They've all moved away, said the voice of a stranger
To a beautiful land by the bright crystal sea
Some beautiful day I'll meet 'em in heaven
Where no one will be a stranger to me
Everybody I met (everybody I met)
Seemed to be a rank stranger (seemed to be a rank stranger)
No mother nor dad (no mother or dad)
Not a friend could I see (not a friend could I see)
They knew not my name (they knew not my name)
And I knew not their faces (and I knew not their faces)
I found they were all (I found they were all)
Rank strangers to me (rank strangers to me)

user-pic

Thank you, dear Frosty.

user-pic

Great stuff. Very smart strategy.

user-pic

As a longtime fan of old-timey and bluegrass music, and a lefty musicians who occasionally feels conflicted by the knowledge that that many of the artists and fans of this music have radically different worldviews and political positions, positions that range from ignorant loyalty to the GOP to a disturbing history and continuing legacy of sexism and racism, this radio ad just blows my mind.

I think this is marks an incredible moment and could be a VERY effective means to appeal to folks who might never consider voting for Obama. Let's just hope that he doesn't get treated like the Dixie Chicks did, and let's be vigilant in coming to his defense if he does. It took a lot of courage for him to do this and he deserves support.

Good points.

user-pic

I think he's on the crest of a wave. We're bearing him on our shoulders. Anyone, anyone at all, who takes heat for supporting Barack, we're standing up for them!

Wonderful!!

Killer ad. I'm looking even more forward to seeing Ralph this weekend in San Francisco:

Great to have Ralph stumping for Obama, but didn't anyone notice the song playing in the background? It was "Rank Stranger." Is that the best message to send? Ralph says, "I know Barack is a good man." Meanwhile, the song says, "I found they were all rank strangers to me." Kind of weird, that's all.

That ad will turn southern Ohio, and a lot of NE Ohio as well,,,,,,,,,,,, also think Indiana, KY, WVA, PA, Michigan,,,,, Stanley still tours small venues in all those places. He's probably the last of the originals and enjoys god like status. Play this anywhere Bluegrass is big and/or there are numerous Southern outmigrants. It will work.
Someone find a way to clue in the Obama folks,,, Alexrod, Plouffe, whomever.

Wow, great ad. I do not listen to commercial radio so I will never know if it is in rotation here in Missouri, but I certainly hope it is.

I have been waiting a long time for the New Deal family to come back home to the people's party.

Roosvelt gave us the New Deal.

President Obama will give us A Fair Deal.

Not to nitpick too much, but wasn't the "Fair Deal" Truman's take on it? Fair Deal works for me...

user-pic

I play in a bluegrass band here in Central Pennsylvania and I'm going to send this link to every picker I know. This ad would work great around here....just about everybody in the region has at least some exposure to bluegrass and the Stanley Bros. and to hear a good old boy like that tell it straight could really sway some of the undecided folks.

Omfg. Awesome. An absolute music legend. He's been playing so long he's got his own freakin' museum. Bluegrass for me the rest of the day, yeehaw!

Wow. Getting Dr. Stanley to do this shows just how deep the Obama campaign is.

That's just fucking cool, man. No two ways about it.

user-pic

I bet you he just stepped right up to the plate. And Obama said, be my guest!

Yeah, if Ralph initiated it, that would be icing on the cake!

This is the real deal. Play this baby in AL, GA, SC, NC, VA, TN, KY, OH & PA! From Nashville to Ashville to Charlottesville! From Huntsville to Morgantown to Uniontown to Scranton! Up and down the Ohio River valley! Branson, Springfield, Rolla & Jeff City, MO! Hell, play it in Bangor, Concord, Traverse City, Green Bay, Duluth, Fargo, Billings,Spokane & Fairbanks!

user-pic

Yup!

It's so moving, that even if blue grass is not your "thang" you love it!

Awesome. Stanley is a god. The right kind of "celebrity."

Larry Sparks might be in McCain's corner. He might could record an ad for McCain, with sound bed of "Git Up John" or "Wreck of the Old 97"

user-pic

Is there a song called "the end of the line"? Because that would make a good tune for mcFailure right now.

Not bluegrass, but it works:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nSL4Eqpm9l4

user-pic

Intrade:

Barack is at 66.9.

mcShame - 33.

So we're at a bit over 2 to 1 for Barack!!!! yay!!

One of the most powerful campaign ads I've ever heard or seen. And this is in Kentucky? Wow.

Oops - Virginia. Even better. I hope, though, that they will air it all over the South.

Fantastic!

McSame Quaylin Blog

As a music guy, I assure you that this is an endorsement that could have real impact, not just in VA, but in WV, KY, and TN (he's one of the true fathers of bluegrass, which is sacred American music in the SE...as Subliminability said, a God!). I always did love him....now, I really love him!

I always did love him....now, I really love him!

Ditto!

The Fighting Ninth was once a Democratic stronghold in Virginia -- and please God, it can be again.
Thank you, Ralph.

Interesting. Stanley backed Edwards earlier this year:

http://bravenewfilms.org/blog/27030-dr-ralph-stanley-john-edwards-back-home-tour

This is the 'aura' or presence Ralph Stanley has,,,,, just read TheraP's and others responses to being in the presence of Barack,,,,, same and doubles for Stanley.
Ralph Stanley is about the last of the greats, and any Southerner or Appalachian, especially the outmigrants take him at his word. If Ralph says it, it's got to be OK.
This spot needs to go national,,,, add a video on Youtube or some such even better. Somebody tell Axelrod and Plouffe.

user-pic

I like the ad but Ralph Stanley talked too much and too fast. If they took out a sentence or two, the ad would be much better.

user-pic

Better than the dumb barn painting ad they were using earlier.

Just remember, though, Ralph endorsed John Kerry and John Edwards. And in the '70s, he lost twice running for local office.

Georgia is bluer than everyone thinks. We, who are volunteering, know and the early voting is going at a great clip in favor of the big O.

Hi, my first post, too. I played this brilliant ad for my wife and she pointed out the song in the background was great choice, Ralph Stanley's own "Rank Stranger".

I wandered again to my home in the mountains
Where in youth's early dawn I was happy and free
I looked for my friends but I never could find them
I found they were all rank strangers to me

Everybody I met seemed to be a rank stranger
No mother or dad not a friend could I see
They knew not my name and I knew not their faces
I found they were all rank strangers to me.

Now they've all moved away said the voice of a stranger
To a beautiful home by a bright crystal sea
And some day I'll meet them all up in Heaven
Where no one will be a rank stranger to me.

user-pic

His statement

"I also know Barack is a good man. A father and devoted husband, he values personal responsibility and family first."

has also got to sting. Hard not to make the comparison with John McCain, who cheated on his wife after coming back from Vietnam, then walked out on her when Cindy and her millions beckoned.

Hey, I'm sending it around here in South Central Indiana - the first red state called for Bush in 2000 - and now competitive for Barack Obama in 2008.

This is the home of the Bill Monroe Memorial Music Park in Bean Blossom, Indiana, the home of the largest and most renowned bluegrass music festival in the world.

(I'm in a blues band and we just played the big Bean Blossom Blues Fest there in early September).

Ralph Stanley is a god to alla us musicians and I'm going to download and play this cut during a big get-out-the-vote rally (The Unconventional Tour) in Bloomington, IN, on October 23.

And if you don't already know, the Stanley Brothers played their final public session at Bean Blossom in mid-October 1966. At that time they had been playing for 20years. Less than 3mos later, Carter was dead, but Ralph continued and has now been playing for over 60years - I just saw him here in Pittsburgh a few weeks ago. What a record, and what a stellar man!

I am going to play this for my conservative bluegrass fan friends for sure. Ralph Stanley may not be a big name to the general public, but he is huge amongst bluegrass fans.

The common political wisdom as reported in the Richmond Times Dispatch and other Virginia newspapers has had it that the Tidewater region (Newport News, Hampton Roads) and the large African American population that live there is what will make Virginia a swing state in this election cycle. Perhaps the punditry has underestimated the economic circumstances that have both angered and energized the Appalachian white vote that so many of them commented on as being racist when Hillary Clinton won the West Virginia primary (Ralph Stanley supported John Edwards in the primaries). Ralph Stanley's endorsement may be a sign that working people across the state (and maybe even across the Upland South) are willing to put race aside in this presidential election. Perhaps the Bluegrass music giant won't be so "lonesome" when he gets to his local polling place in McClure or Clintwood. Maybe the pollsters should take heed that they need to drill down to the coal seams and the hollers. Maybe this Bluegrass music giant won't be so "lonesome" when he gets to the polls in McClure or Clintwood. It's the "Wildwood effect" versus the "Wilder effect" but any way you see it, this is a good sign for Obama.

McPalin's sinking numbers of the last couple weeks (maybe especially in the Upland South?) just may reflect an increased awakening to the heart of this scene from O Brother, too:

Pappy O'Daniel: "We need a shot in the arm. You hear me boys? In the damn arm! Election held tomorrow, that son of bitch Stokes would win it in a walk!"
Junior O'Daniel: "Well, he's the reform candidate, Daddy."
Pappy O'Daniel: "Yeah."
Junior O'Daniel: "A lot of people like that reform. Maybe we should get us some."
Pappy O'Daniel: "I'll reform you, you soft-headed son of a bitch. How we gonna run reform when we're the damn incumbent? Is that the best idea you boys can come up with? Reform?! Weepin' Jesus on the cross. That's it - you may as well start drafting my concession speech right now!"

BTW, footnote trivia, there was a real Pappy O'Daniel, too - Texas gov & US Senator (defeated LBJ) probably better remembered as the man who Bob Wills got his start with.

My heart was warmed and my spirit soared when I heard this news. I learned it the day I arrived in Big Stone Gap SWVA to serve the campaign.

Dr. Stanley is a legend in the hills of Southwest Virginia and his support is invaluable.

Strangely enough, I was wondering about his political persuasion on the drive down here. I'm sure it's because I grew up in Upper-East Tennessee on the Virginia line and I have always known about Ralph Stanley's own campaign for the presidency : )

Thank you Dr. Ralph.

Let's turn SWVA Blue!!!

..if there is any indication from the good people I've met so far, we have our chances.

This is a good one. People talking to people has always been the most powerful tool for change. Ralph Stanley may be a living legend but he is also "regular folks". His words were simple, straightforward and from the heart.

When Dr. Stanley sings Oh Death the next time I hope he thinks of the Babies that he is helping to comdemn to death. With the new abortion laws the liberals will push thru when they control both houses and the Presidents office if Obama is elected. All abortions will paid for by the goverment, Minors will be allowed abortions with out parental consent, partial birth abortions will bacome the norm, and babies borned alive after botched abortions will be left to die without life saving procedures.
