More Slippage In Arizona For McCain
CNN downgrades McCain's home state from "safe McCain" to "leans McCain."
The network also moves North Dakota from "leans McCain" into the "toss-up" category. The Obama camp announced today that he's going on the air in both states, plus Georgia.
Fun and telling footnote: After reporting that, CNN adds:
But there's some good news for McCain down south: Louisiana has moved from "lean McCain" to "safe McCain."
Take the good news where you can get it...

A poll came out today in Louisiana with McCain +2. LA is not safe for McCain either.

I was looking at my sample ballot today and found out that Ron Paul is on it. He has a decent following here (I think he came in 2nd place in the caucuses), and his presence should help out at least a little.

McCain and Palin have given us no details as to how they are going to put this country back on the right track. All I hear is country first, and Barack knows this person and Barack that... This is getting so tired, and for all of you morons that vote for McCain/Palin, I hope you've enjoyed the last 6 years, because we're going to get more of the same if they win; in competency, stay the course even though I'm going the wrong way, Brownie you're sure doing a heck of a job, birthday cake on the strip (BushMcCain) while a natural disaster is occurring, a VP that doesn't know their role Palin is just like Cheney in that way, rich get richer, poor get homeless, penniless, no healthcare, no jobs (they all go overseas, rising food costs, a bad education system, and maybe even another war.)
Get the booze ready...please and I don’t drink, bring me some tissue, cause here comes more sh!t rolling down hill if McCain/Palin win.

How on earth does anyone who lives in Louisiana vote for a Republican after Katrina?
November 1, 2008 8:18 AM | Reply | Permalink
It's the old "What's the Matter with Kansas" question. The real answer in Louisiana is the people that Katrina hit hardest and longest have moved out of the state.
That said, keep your eyes on the state election night. There's been a concerted effort to either get voters an absentee ballot or back to New Orleans to vote, so there may just be a surprise or two in store for some down ballot Republicans election night.

That's not how it works. If McCain is up by even one percentage point anywhere, that makes it safe (in some cases a virtual lock) in the eyes of pollsters . . . and the reporters who love them. If Obama is ahead by less than ten points, then it's a toss-up that could go either way.

The Republicans used to be so brilliantly diabolical - mapping out all the contingencies well in advance - calling in terror alerts - carefully managing wedge issues and ballot initiatives - keeping everyone on strict message discipline - targeting just the right precincts for false propaganda and election fraud ...
Since Katrina and the implosion of the Iraq "rebuilding" effort, they just seem sluggish and stupid - as if no one is steering the ship. Maybe Plame and Abramoff rattled Rove so much that the big picture slipped away from him. I don't know, but this entire campaign, going way back to pre-Fred Thompson, has been consistently pathetic.
Not that I'm complaining ...
October 31, 2008 6:43 PM | Reply | Permalink
One of their big problems was that they were playing a game of trick-or-treat, with them the trick and Obama the treat. The Rovian stuff was effective when based on a trick and a treat, because it gave the Republicans a treat after the tricky election. This time, it seems an important faction of their party saw this game as all trick, backstopped by more lousy governance.
October 31, 2008 6:55 PM | Reply | Permalink
I don't want to rewrite history, but I never considered them as unbeatable and diabolical as many think. There was always bad news and criticism of their methods, but Americans kept inexplicably voting them back in.
To me, this is because Americans are credulous, and it's hard to believe sometimes that someone or some party is lying to our faces. But we do eventually see through it. And then we get pissed.
October 31, 2008 6:56 PM | Reply | Permalink
It's not that Rover et al., are invincible, it's that they're capable of anything.
While there are Republicans who are principled people (who just happen to have a different idea of proper governance), the party also has a stronger tradition of attracting mercenary sociopaths.
Those are the people I worry about.
October 31, 2008 7:30 PM | Reply | Permalink
I think part of the reason the Republicans are flailing about is Obama himself.
He never hits below the belt, never makes it personal, in fact he's generous to a fault towards the opposition. He doesn't exagerate, lie or dissemble and any mistakes he does make are immediately corrected.
Th Republicans have nothing to hit him with except his paasing association with a former radical and the ridiculous charge of Obama being a pinko.
McCain has nothing to offer but taking on earmarks and bombing Iran. A fairly hopeless and empty platform

His campaign has been less than perfect. His dirty tactics have worked against him. Obama's campaign has been almost infallible.
He nominated Sarah Palin for VP who's foreign affairs experience is that she can see Russia. 59% of people polled said they feel Palin is unqualified to be VP and question his wisdom based on his choice.

Shields got the quip of the evening, describing the McCain campaign, again in the past tense, as a civil war in a leper colony.

Fact is it is Oilbama, who voted for the Bush Cheney Energy Bill, crafted in secret with Cheney and Oil Lobbyists, not McCain.
If you think Oilbama is going to get out of Iraq any sooner than McCain you are delusional, he will do what his Oil buddies tell him.
You are known by your friends” is a sturdy old saw with a lot of wisdom in it. It’s one thing to buddy up, only to quickly find out that this person violates your deeply-held values about right and wrong and quickly exit the relationship. It’s quite another to know exactly who such people are, and still keep them close by until it is no longer to one’s own advantage to hang on to them. We know about Oilbama’s long-term relationships with anti-white religious leaders, unrepentant home-grown terrorists, and a sleazy slumlord who was a major backer and fundraiser for Obama who now sits in prison on multiple sustained charges.
There are no clear cut great candidates. While Palin may be inexperienced, I feel we need more Washington Outsiders, and Biden would talk the Nation into ruin should he become President, he never knows when to shut up.
Fact is, both candidates suck. We should have had either Romney or Hillary to choose between. I trust McCain more so I am leaning that way.
I cannot help but think Oilbama is a smooth talking scumbag who will say anything to get elected.

Florida early voters at record 3.4 million
Early voting continues at a brisk pace: 3.4 million Floridians have already cast ballots by mail or in person -- 30 percent of the state's 11.2-million voter electorate.
Up to today, Democrats have a 242,000-voter lead over Republicans in overall balloting, the state Democratic Party said.
Democrats account for 45 percent (1.5 million) of early and absentee votes, while Republicans are at 38 percent (1.3 million). The rest are unaffiliated.

Just before the 2004 election, Zogby put out a poll or two showing very good numbers for Kerry. It helped to get a lot of people's hopes up.
It looks like turnabout is fair play.
Zogby's numbers here are literally crap, even for a one-day subsample. But they're being trumpeted by Drudge and his wingnut readers. What do you suppose that will do to their spirits come election day, when the "Zogby Effect" bites them this time?
This election is being saturated with polls, and this is the only poll right now showing McCain within the margin of error, much less ahead. What's more, early voting stats and thorough polling in the critical electoral college states are pointing to a very high likelihood of an Obama win.
So take this "poll" for what it's worth: It in no way indicates anything actually going on in the election, but it will serve to amplify the demoralization of the wingnuts many times over.

roll your mouse over the map to the left to see the national numbers. that's why the zogby number is crap.
relax for a minute. then go to www.barackobama.com and make some calls with neighbor-to-neighbor to GOTV. when you're done, go knock on doors to GOTV. then vote.
we're going to win this thing. note that i didn't say "obama's going to win this thing." WE'RE going to win this thing, WE'RE going to take OUR country back, and WE'RE going to have bubbly hangovers on november 5th.
if the redcoats couldn't kick our asses, neither can mccain/palin.

According to this on-the-ground report from AZ, the McCain robocall in AZ may be backfiring to some extent. They are inspiring the AZ Democrats to work even harder for Obama, people are donating more money.
There is some talk of Obama making an appearance, but it may be just a head fake to drive the McCain people nuts.

Hard to see from Obama's upcoming rally schedule where he's got the time to be in AZ, but he can do amazing things, so he could surprise Arizonans. Tomorrow would be the likely day since he'll be in nearby Nevada.

If only a 527 could put this ad together to play in Louisiana in light of recent close polling: Black screen, white type: August 29, 2005. No sound, just images of destruction along the Gulf Coast and New Orleans, people stranded on rooftops, the Superdome, etc. Cut to another black screen with white type: And where was George Bush? Cut to infamous picture of Bush smiling on tarmac in Arizona, zoom out slowly to reveal him having a grand old time, holding a birthday cake with John McCain.

all kidding aside, a zogby outlier which shows a McCain lead is excellent news for Obama. If Obama has anything to fear right now, it is his supporters getting the idea that this thing is over and they don't have to vote. Clearly, the vast majority in this country do not want a McCain/Palin presidency and they are voting in record numbers to stop it. And clearly a huge majority very much want an Obama/Biden administration and are voting to bring it about. Any poll which puts those results in doubt will only rejoin the Obama supporters efforts to win this thing.
They got the guns, but we got the numbers...
Yes I did, three weeks ago as an Oregon voter.

I agree with you 100%. As Obama keeps saying, its not over with yet and things can change. I keep the Heidi Bowl scenario in the back of my mind cause something may happen on election day that skews the race to McCain before anyone realizes what happened and there won't be any time left to compensate for the swing.

I am quite frustrated with this whole election...I can't help but notice everytime Obama has a "problem"it's put under the rug and McCains problems are blown up...for all you Obama fans here's some info you can look up...Obama is saying it's not a "black" THING but it's his side bringing it up...Obama's mother is white and his dad is 87% ARABIC and only 13% BLACK...OBAMA AND HIS WIFE HAVE PARTICIPATED IN FLAG BURNINGS..HE BELIEVES OUR FLAG IS A SIGN OF OPPRESSION AND OUR NATIONAL ANTHEM IS HORRIBLE AND SHOULD NOT MENTION GOD OR BOMBS AND BOTH SHOULD BE CHANGED...HE WANTS TO DISMANTLE OUR MILITARY...WHICH RUSSIA AND ALOT OF MIDDLE EAST COUNTRIES WOULD LOVE FOR BAD REASONS. WAKE UP! HE IS VERY UNAMERICAN AND HIS WIFE SPENDS ALOT TOO SHE CHARGES A DINNER FOR 2 AT THE WALDORF AND BEFORE TIP IT WAS 447.58 THEY SAY EVERYONE NEEDS TO GIVE UP A PIECE OF THE PIE BUT THEY AREN'T..AS FOR HEALTH CARE ALL THE DRS WOULD HAVE TO TAKE PAY CUTS AND IT WOULD TAKE DECADES TO ACHIEVE IT. I CANT SAY I LOVE McCAIN BUT AT LEAST HE WON'T CAUSE WAR AND DESTROY OUR COUNTRY LEAVE US DEFENSELESS..I WANT TO HAVE SOMETHING LEFT FOR OUR KIDS..HELLO...RESEARCH...OBAMA'S THE MEDIA SWEETHEART...BUT YOU DON'T KNOW THE WHOLE THING AND YOU WON'T HEAR IT ON THE NEWS..HE BANS ANYONE THAT IS "MEAN" TO HIS SIDE...

Funny how Obama people, when faced with this info, have NOTHING to say...all you gotta do is research the internet to see it's true...I hope McCain wins but because of the above reasons...you talk about Obama but his track record in voting is against almost everything he stands for now...McCain put together a bill more than 5 years ago to stop the mortgage / banking situation...Obama voted against it...and supported the people that invested the most in the "subprime" You can't pick someone based on color or who seems more polished..you base it on experience...and he has none..if he was White, Italian and Arabic he would never even be where he is today and that is racism...I hope he doesn't win but if he does...it will be based on all the shallow people who voted for the wrong reason...and remember if you vote for him and he destroys our country you have no right to complain cause all the info was right there for you to find...you all should be scared...it's not a game....
