More Polls Find Obama Vaulting Ahead In Key Battlegrounds
Wow. Hours after a set of polls showed Obama gaining in key battlegrounds, another batch of polls from CNN finds additional confirmation that the economic crisis has put Obama way up in other ones:
• Florida: Obama 51%, McCain 47%, with a ±3.5% margin of error.
• Minnesota: Obama 54%, McCain 43%, with a ±3.5% margin of error.
• Missouri: Obama 49%, McCain 48%, with a ±3.5% margin of error.
• Nevada: Obama 51%, McCain 47%, with a ±4% margin of error.
• Virginia: Obama 53%, McCain 44%, with a ±4% margin of error.
Four of these states were won by George W. Bush twice, with Minnesota being the only exception. All totaled, those four red states add up to 56 electoral votes -- and John McCain can barely afford to lose even one electoral vote from the Republican column.
Also, CNN has changed their map to favor Obama a little bit more -- Minnesota has moved from Toss-Up to Leans Obama, and Missouri from Leans McCain to Toss-Up.

O my god, Eric - he "vaulted"? You just undid your McLame Vaults headline.
Come here I want to give you a big kiss!

We had better get ready for some nasty "October Surprise." The neocons are not going to go gently into the night, not after what they've done to our country. Some of them might face criminal charges if McCain-Palin doesn't win. And, in any event, without an empty suit like Palin, who are they going to manipulate to sustain their wars of imperial fantasy. Moreover, McCain has a penchant for the risky move, the "razzle dazzle." What do readers think the October Surprise is likely to be? Any guesses? We might as well talk about this now, so it's not such a "surprise" to the voters when it drops.

Yep, Republicans get blamed for everything now. It's hard to imagine any stunt they could pull now that would be positive for McCain without canceling that out by being negative for Republicans in general. Even if they pulled bin Laden out of their back pocket, the reaction from most voters would be "what took you so long?"
It's pretty clear their intended "October surprise" for Republicans in general was the kangaroo courts at Guantanamo. The fact that they thought they could ram those through and make a PR victory of it shows you just what a mickey mouse operation they are.

Of course CNN has NC leaning McCain even though the RCP avg has Obama up, however CO and WI are tossups even though Obama is up by quite a bit in both.
October 1, 2008 4:52 PM | Reply | Permalink
I agree with you about the incongruity of listing WI as a "toss-up," but to be very fair to CNN I think that it is right to list NC and CO as toss-ups, poll results notwithstanding. When a state has been as reliably red for as long as both of those have, it is quite reasonable to say "I will believe it when I see it."
October 1, 2008 4:58 PM | Reply | Permalink
I think NC should be listed Tossup but its listed as lean McCain right now which is what is ridiculous. Obama is ahead in NC atm and its listed as leaning McCain???
October 1, 2008 5:07 PM | Reply | Permalink
Oh, I had missed that. I guess that I saw the orange in VA and neglected to notice the pink in NC. Well, what can I say but that I agree with you on that point as well. I could understand if they listed NC as "leans Obama," although I myself would list it as "toss-up," but there is no good way to arrive at the decision that it should be classed as "lean McCain." Even Nate Silver has it pure white right now.

The McCain campaign is in a terrible strategic place now. These new polls force McCain to dilute his $84M federal financing over an even wider area than the campaign managers' worst nightmares. Naturally the RNC, and 527s, will try to do their shares too. The RNC for its purposes may decide to bail out in those states where there is not also an endangered Republican senate seat.
On the other side, I hope Obama was able to duplicate his August fund raising numbers in September. He can force McCain to play defense in all of these states with Obama having financial superiority everywhere.

Good point. Likewise, I am sure that it happens that the pollsters reach a person and try to ask him or her questions, but the answers are so uselessly incoherent that they just end up hanging up and not counting those responses. Those incoherent voters, however, are likely Sarah Palin supporters, so it is a near certainty that these polls are underestimating her support.

It's not a ploy to boost McCain's chances.
Prices have fallen because the oil-futures speculators are starting to factor in the effect of the major recession that is coming, whether the bailout bill passes or not.
Recession will necessarily lower demand for oil, and oversupply will push down the price.
So that's the good news.
The bad news is we're in for a major recession.
But it will be cheaper to drive from the home you no longer have to the job you no longer have in the car you no longer have.

This is a nice trend, certainly much better than polls showing Obama behind, but after the last few presidential races, don't count your chickens before they hatch. We've been through this too many times to get complacent, now.

My hunch is that Obama's not going to change his Plan and that the plan doesn't call for playing it safe, rather looks to ratchet up the pressure on the old man

Agreed that TX is blue-able. Dont live there now, but grew up there. People I know who still live there are all Obama supporters. Big problem is the perception that their votes don't count b/c of course Texas will go red. I keep telling people to pay that no mind and vote! Still a long shot but hey, never know. And any progress puts a dent in that perception.

I just hope Obama and his folks don't sit on their hands. They need to hammer McCain mercilessly; whip on him like a stray dog; lay a million-pound shithammer on his head, as Hunter Thompson might've said.
I would love it if they started taking McCain to task for his claims on his record. I want Obama to start asking out loud, where's the record?
WHERE'S THE BEEF, JOHN?
I keep hearing about his great record on foreign policy, but I've never actually seen any evidence. That claim almost seems like a device the cable networks can use to make it look like the thing is close in order maintain ratings through election day. Can anyone out there tell me what the big deal is with John McCain and foreigh policy?
No mercy, no prisoners, in a nice way of course.

Add AP-GFK poll to the joy: "Likely voters now back Obama 48-41 percent over McCain, a dramatic shift from an AP-GfK survey that gave the Republican a slight edge nearly three weeks ago, before Wall Street collapsed and sent ripples across worldwide markets."
And it notes, "On top of that, unrelated surveys [Quinnipiac and CNN//Time/Opinion Research Corp.] show Obama beating McCain in several battlegrounds, including Ohio, Florida and Pennsylvania - three states critical in the state-by-state fight for the presidency."

There is a new GOP Ad with ayers, wright, and rezko. These are the reasons i dont think the GOP will get much out of this strategy.
1. They are old. People have been closely watching this election from the primaries. Most already know about rezko, ayers, wright. the shock effect is very low now.
2.Mccain has his own problems. Palin with the independence party, him getting caught red handed in a lie about fannie mae and his advisors, palin scandal..troopergate, trying to prevent her ex brothr in law from recieving benefits....
3. The sleeping lion of keating 5.
obama issues will cancel out mccain issues and vise versa.
mccain has to do better than that, fear of Palin trumps fear of obama blackness.

I've been wondering if his memoir is another sleeping lion awaiting to be unleashed.

Obama has a five point lead among Independents in this poll. Last week, this group narrowly backed McCain.

I have a one-person anecdote on that. My wayward younger brother (now 42) is an independent. He voted for Nader in 2000 and Bush in 2004. He is way on board for Obama this year. Loves him and is really excited. He is happy to make his Big Sis happy for once.
