New McCain Campaign/RNC Robocalls Question Whether Obama And Dems Really Want To Keep Us Safe

The McCain campaign and the Republican National Committee are pumping stark new robo-calls into Virginia that assert that Barack Obama isn't "who you think" he is and subtly question whether he and his fellow Democrats really want to keep us safe.

The insinuations in the call -- which was sent our way by a Virginia reader -- go considerably beyond the McCain campaign's official message about Obama and national security, meaning this is another under-the-radar effort to push a more lurid message than might be considered acceptable in broad daylight.

Give it a listen:

"Barack Obama and his fellow Democrats aren't who you think they are," the call says. "They say they want to keep us safe, but Barack Obama said the threat we face now from terrorism is nowhere near as dire as it was in the end of the Cold War. And Congressional Democrats now want to give civil rights to terrorists."

Note the effort to sow doubts by saying Obama and Dems "aren't who you think they are" and that they merely "say" they want to keep us safe.

The claim about Dems and civil rights for terrorists seems to be a reference to Congressional Dems' support for habeas for terror suspects. And the assertion about Obama and the Cold War appears to be a distorted reference to this recent claim by Obama:

"Iran, Cuba, Venezuela -- these countries are tiny compared to the Soviet Union. They don't pose a serious threat to us the way the Soviet Union posed a threat to us."

The robocall closes with a stark suggestion that Obama and Dems can't be trusted on national security. "John McCain and his party allies understand the threats we face," it says. "When you vote, vote for the team you can trust to keep America safe."

Today's call comes after we reported here yesterday that the McCain campaign are pumping calls into multiple states claiming that Obama put "Hollywood above America," suggesting a massive last-minute robocall effort by McCain is underway as the race enters its final stretch.

Neither the McCain campaign nor the RNC immediately responded to a request for comment.

McShame and the GOP are plain old fuckin pukes! or should I say..."fuckin pigs w/ lipstick are over them" Just a few days and this nightmare will soon begin to fade! What a disgrace and this won't be the last act from them.

early voting starts today in NC!

Habeas corpus? How...radical....

user-pic

It's getting uglier.

Constrast this with Obama efforts in OH as reported by 538:

By the way, quantitatively and qualitatively they have been the best reporters of the political campaign this season.

user-pic

McCain is really putting a lot of money in Virginia. That in itself is a victory for Obama.

Thanks for the link. These people are out of their damn minds.

I loved your stupid vote DS link, so funny! Thanks.

user-pic

Almost there...

I spent 45 minutes today explaining how polls work to a Republican coworker today. He had heard on Brian and the Judge that the polls have a larger representation of Democrats than Republicans and were therefore suspect. I then had to explain to him that there are more registered Democrats than Republicans. Which led to an explanation about the importance of getting the base out to vote and why Reagan Democrats were such a big deal.

The frustrating part is that this guy is an Air Force Academy graduate with an MBA from UCLA. But I guess that the Kerry election disappointment taught me alot about how to interpret the political data - from spin to raw numbers. One thing I've learned is that if you are arguing that the polls are skewered then your candidate is in really, really bad shape.

user-pic

look the majority of us have made up our minds already and no stinking ad is going to change it be it from obama or mccain! thank goodness there are only a few wishy washy voters out there who are looking for any baseless reason to legitimize their vote against their better interest! to them, i say "fare well".....the new younger voters need to go out en masse and cast their vote accordingly along with the dem faithfuls be they AA, hispanics, whites etc....hopefully, the numbers are high enough to drown out the naysayers!!!!!

user-pic

Hey, everybody -- if you're interviewed by an exit poller on Election Day, tell them you voted for Obama because he loves terrorists. And then in the evening you can watch Sean Hannity's head explode!

user-pic

Now THAT'S a fun idea! The only reason to watch Fox, other than to watch them sob into their coffee cups as the results start rolling in.

user-pic

We have had 30 years of class warfare, in which the wealthy strip-mined the middle class. The wealth has been "spread" upward.

Joe Klein

user-pic

Which brings us to Joe from Ohio (sick of the other term).

If this guys is indicative of the undecideds left out there then McCain is in deep trouble. My guess is that Joe has never voted for a Democrat in his life. His primary concern is not paying taxes, calls government health insurance programs socialism and is against social security.

This guy should be changing his sons name to Joe Sara Palin McCain Plumber Jr. Of course, my guess is that he is a McCain voter who got caught in something and is using the undecided shtick to be passive aggressive against Obama. Can't blame him - I might do the same thing in his situation. "I can't decide between McCain and Obama. I have big questions about McCain's temper and choice of Palin and disagree with all his policies. But then again, I kind of disagree with Obama that the middle class needs a tax cut and that education should be a national priority. Plus, he's not pro-choice enough."

user-pic

About Joe the Plumber, AP writes "he doesn't have a [plumbing] license and doesn't need one." In addition, he doesn't have any money in savings or knowledge to run a plumbing business. He just had a fantasy to own a business, and what he told Obama was a Republican talking point, a sham. Toledo Blade reveals he's a registered Republican. According to HuffPost, he has "not paid $1,182.98 of personal income tax." He believes nobody should pay taxes at all.
This is McCain's ideal voter and hero of the presidential debate !

Son-in-law of Keating Five Charles Keating.

user-pic

No, Son of Bitch of K-5 !

user-pic

Correction, close relative of, sorry. I posted link for you.

user-pic

Thanks, Amelie.
One diarist at DKos says he appears to own 4 businesses. I'll try to verify this.

user-pic

Scumbags.

F**k them and the horse they rode in on. I have NO tolerance for their B.S. today. Anyone who votes for any candidate with an "R" by their name is a fool and an enabler of this crap.

user-pic

Looks like Beldar...I mean Joe is getting outed as a republican operative.

This guy has got a real shady background...more to come.

He'll do just fine under an Obama administration...after he gets audited

user-pic
user-pic

Nice! So our "not so famous" plumber is likely a plant from the Rove foundation. He probably poured some **ano down a sink once and calls himself a "plumber." Friggin' Kojak look alike.

user-pic

Can someone please explain how the "plant" theory is supposed to make sense? Obama met this guy when he was canvassing his neighborhood....how in the world could the republicans have "planted" him?

user-pic

Just more of the same BS from the Republican Cheerleading squad. BOOOOOOOOOO! Let's scare the public! Bring back the terror alerts with color coding! Idiots.

user-pic

Seriously, I might not vote for McCain.

user-pic

LOL

user-pic

I get the feeling we haven't been getting "straight talk" from him.

user-pic

I have a feeling Joe The Plumber just wanted to tell his buddies at the bar he confronted Obama when he was in his neighborhood, and probably had some embellished fantasy scenario of how it went down. I don't think he wants the media scrutiny that McCain forced on him - his whole life is going to be fair gamed if he tries to hold on to these fifteen minutes.

He already being outed as a fringe party supporter, though now is a registered Republican, fabricated his business plan, has no personal savings and had a tax lien against him, and doesn't believe in social security - and that in a mere 12 hours worth of digging. The next wave will be folks coming forward who've known him and have stories to tell.

user-pic

Jonze: Turns out the press was there waiting for this confrontation, and a newspaper photographed him during the debate so he knew it was a topic of discussion. Then check upward to my links. This guy is SO stupid, he will rue the day he decided to be a prop for Joe six pack.

user-pic

Thanks for staying on this!

The mcLame campaign: Bringing you sludge on a daily basis.

One thing for certain, Obama needs to watch his back . . .

What's the story on robo-calls? Is there any evidence that they can be effective in persuading the persuadables?

For my part, I find robo-calling to be annoying and disruptive. Are there people out there who like getting calls like this, and hear them out?

user-pic

Do Republicans ever run a campaign where their primary weapon isn't fear?

user-pic

Just got back to another GOP ad in WI - telling me the Dems have poor judgment.

Sheeesh!

user-pic

Clearly, Karl Rove has emerged from the sewer where he dwells and has taken charge of this fetid, stinking, evil campaign. If not before January 11, then after: Can someone PLEASE find a way to get this *sshole under indictment?

user-pic

Just got a William Ayers/Obama terrorist robocall in New Mexico.

user-pic

There is a spelling error in Joe's last name, which leads to 2 possibilities: Either he is not a voter, like Ben Smith speculated last night, or he's a registered Republican like Toledo Blade first reported. More likely, the latter. More on Joe the Plumber at DKos. Also, check out the other links at the bottom of this story:

user-pic

Wow... the bankrupt Repugs are driving their campaign into the ground. Voters (especially Independents) have widely rejected this negative campaigning, and these idiots are doubling-down on it. Not to mention the fact that most people HATE robocalls. I doubt these sleazebags are doing anything except dragging McLoser's favorability ratings down even more.

user-pic

Frankly, I'm surprised they're not warning voters that "Obama's sister is a thespian."

user-pic

I think TPM will need a separate "RoboCall" page just to document all the hundreds of McCain robocalls from now until the election. They are cheap to produce and can be annoyingly effective.

user-pic

We are tracking all robo calls this election at our blog:

"I got this robocall at home (central Ohio near Columbus)just 15 minutes ago:
I'm calling for John McCain and the Republican National Committee because you need to know that Barack Obama has worked closely with domestic terrorist Bill Ayers, whose organization bombed the U.S. Capitol, the Pentagon, a judge's home, and killed Americans. And Democrats will enact an extreme leftist agenda if they take control of Washington. Barack Obama and his Democratic allies lack the judgment to lead our country. This call was paid for by McCain-Palin 2008 and the Republican National Committee, 202-863-8500." Voice sounded the same as the young male on the "Hollywood" call two days ago.

user-pic

It's despicable what's going on with the GOP and supporters of McCain.

Since the negative stuff has been shown not to work, maybe the GOP is actually trying to swing this election in Obama's favor, since McCain can't garner enough support, and the financial crisis is so severe, it won't allow Obama or a democratic led congress to enact any of his plans.

Then in four years, the GOP will say, this is the worst recession in the history of America, and look who's been the majority since 2006.

user-pic

"give civil rights to terrorists"?

What the hell does that mean? (Especially seeing as how most terrorists aren't even American citizens. . . Oh, maybe they mean Bill Ayers. . . I guess the GOP want's to deny Bill Ayers of his civil rights-- fine, go ahead and do it, what are they gonna do, arrest him? On what charge? Answer: "He's guilty of being a TERRORIST!")

user-pic

Frankly, I don't think robo-calls will be much help this time around. If people are at all like me, they absolutely hate picking up the phone and then hearing a recorded message. I instantly dislike whoever initiated the call and never stay on the line long enough for the whole message. I have been averaging a political call from a live person about twice a week asking for a donation to various campaigns. Even though I support most of the DEMs and have donated to several, I am really tired of the calls, and these are from acutal people. A recorded call is insulting and annoying.

user-pic

I'm pretty sure this is the same one or same kind I got this morning also.

WI

But honestly, I think most people find such calls so annoying that they think to themselves, "If I get one more of these, I'll never ever vote for that party!

So I think it's actually self-defeating. Even if it's all they have...

user-pic

Just rec'd the Ayers terrorist robocall in Western CO from McCain/Palin and the RNC. They even left a number at the end 202-863-8500.

Thanks for the wake up call. Fellow American wake-up! Perhaps if McCain speaks louder you can hear better.

Go4 McCain-Palin in 2008. YES!!! I'm a Convert!
