McCain Slips Again In Today's Tracking Polls
Here's a wrap-up of the four major national tracking polls for today, with John McCain possibly slipping even further behind Barack Obama:
• Gallup: Obama 48%, McCain 43%, with a ±2% margin of error, compared to a 48%-44% Obama lead yesterday.
• Rasmussen: Obama 51%, McCain 44%, with a ±2% margin of error, compared to a 51%-45% Obama lead yesterday.
• Hotline/Diageo: Obama 47%, McCain 42%, with a ±3.2% margin of error, unchanged from yesterday.
• Research 2000: Obama 51%, McCain 40%, with a ±3% margin of error, compared to a 51%-41% Obama lead yesterday..
Adding these polls together and weighting them by sample sizes, Obama is ahead 49.4%-42.9%, up just slightly from a 49.4%-43.7% lead yesterday. Obama has stayed in place, while McCain's support has slipped by a small amount.

Watch that gap continue to widen. My guess is that tomorrow will be even larger because of the debate performances tonight (please Joe!).

The "Obama kills babies" ad is just the beginning. In order to have any chance at all McCain has to drive up Obama's negatives. He has to go all in with the most outrageous stuff you can imagine. Watch the Republican advertising over the next couple of weeks. It is going to be a bumpy ride.
That said, I think the numbers are probably going to hold about where they are unless Obama actually does something wrong. Obama will win beyond the ability of Diebold to steal the election for McCain.

October 2, 2008 1:50 PM | Reply | Permalink
That first debate was more important than most people realize. I spent part of last Saturday morning phone banking for Obama. I learned two things. First, not many people are home on Saturday morning. Second, those who are were impressed by Obama's performance. One elderly lady told me that she had been planning to vote for McCain because Obama was sworn in on the Koran and all, but after watching the debate her views had changed. He seemed to such a nice young man. I told that Obama hadn't been sworn in the Koran because he is a Christian. She wanted to know how I knew that which lead us into a discussion of Factcheck.com. The debate was the beginning of a shift in her views. She will probably still vote for McCain, but I bet a lot of folks saw Obama for the first time during that debate and were impressed.

The movement we've seen for Obama is largely unrelated to the debate as Obama's surge precedes the debate in time and, in its relation to the economy, transcends it in meaning.
People watched the debate to see if Obama appeared credible, nothing more, nothing less.

As I pointed out in one of the previous daily tracking poll threads: Obama seems to be staying pretty consistent. Most of the gap between the two is McCain dropping. The only explanation I have is that more people are being turned OFF to McCain, more so than people are being turned ON to Obama. Though the latter is, of course, also happening.
October 2, 2008 1:48 PM | Reply | Permalink
I was afraid he might start losing momentum in the polls, but the opposite seems to be happening.
He's also way up in the Real Clear Politics average, 49.0 to 43.2, or +5.8 and in Pollster.com by 49.5 to 42.8, or +6.7.
And the buzz on all the political sites is about GOP panic and Obama momentum. The Florida GOP is angry with McCain, others are wondering why he's campaigning in Missouri this week.
When they start talking about Palin being their best hope to change the "dynamic," you know they're in trouble.
October 2, 2008 1:49 PM | Reply | Permalink
He is campaigning in Missouri because the last 3 polls show Obama up by a point or so. That is a 5-6 point swing in a week or two. Missouri is trending to Obama. If it goes blue we are talking about a giant landslide.

Still, given the fact that, even if one is to accept that RCP cherry-picks its polls (to which I believe there is quite a bit of evidence that they do), Obama is up by quite a bit more than Bush was at this time four years ago. And that must have Republicans scared shitless.

What is up with Mason Dixon? They're the only poll to have McCain up in Virginia. They had them tied in Michigan last week and gave Obama a lead in Florida when every other pollster had McCain ahead by 5.
They can't see to get anything right.

Yeah, going back to 9/22, Rasmussen, SurveyUSA, Insider Advantage, ARG, ABC/WaPO, CNN, have all showed Obama with a 2-9pt lead in VA. Only two polls show McCain in the lead - both were +3 McCain and both were Mason-Dixon polls. Either they know something that all the other pollsters don't or they are polling the wrong mix of voters. My guess is the latter. And not just because I'm an Obama supporter. How can all of these others firms - including high ranked pollsters like Rasmussen and SurveyUSA - be wrong?
I thought I remember reading somewhere that Mason-Dixon has a slight GOP lean. Is that true?
Anyway, as the report notes, they have a 4% MoE so this 3% McCain lead falls within that.

Oh, wow! Holy shit. That puts MI completely out of play for McCain, then. Though it's a HUGE mistake for him to divert attention to WI. WI has been polling as good as MI for Obama. Diverting attention to OH and FL is good, but WI? ...Sorry, John, you need to refocus your entire campaign, "my friend".
October 2, 2008 2:09 PM | Reply | Permalink
I agree, Wisconsin is Obama's. But I think if Obama get both MI and WI, McCain is toast. Include NM, CO and PA as Obama's and all Obama needs is one of the following: IN, OH, VA, NC, or FL.
October 2, 2008 2:19 PM | Reply | Permalink
And I would add that this would be true if McCain took MN, NV, NH and MO.
October 2, 2008 2:20 PM | Reply | Permalink
If Obama wins all of Kerry's states, and then IA, CO and NM, he wins the election with 273 EVs. IA and NM are already in the bag for Obama. Which leaves just CO. And CO is decently in Obama's column, though it's been a tough fight. Now, if Obama were to win any of the following: VA, NC, FL, OH, IN, or MO, Obama wins, even if he were to lose NH and CO. Then, of course, there's NV...
October 2, 2008 2:24 PM | Reply | Permalink
At this point they're struggling to find a path to 270 and it doesn't look good. A lot of their strategy lately was McCain would get Florida. Now they have to send reinforcements there (Florida GOP are freaking out, in part, of the lack of paid McCain staff in FL). They've already had to send reinforcements to NC for gawd's sake. They becoming stretch thin like the military after Bush got hold of them.
October 2, 2008 2:40 PM | Reply | Permalink
Here's the point, electorally. Obama has 260 "safe" EVs: ME, VT, MA, RI, CT, DE, NJ, NY, PA, MD, MI, WI, MN, IL, IA, NM, CA, OR, WA, HI +DC.
McCain has 163 "safe" EVs: WV, KY, TN, SC, GA, AL, MS, AR, LA, TX, OK, KS, NE, SD, ND, MT, WY, ID, UT, AZ, and AK.
Swing States: NV, CO, MO, IN, OH, VA, NC, FL and NH, which equal 115 EVs. If Obama then wins any one of the following, he wins the election: MO, IN, OH, VA, NC or FL. If he wins CO and either NV or NH, he wins.
The question then becomes: will McCain be able to win every single one of those swing states? He would HAVE to to win the election.
October 2, 2008 2:53 PM | Reply | Permalink
Obama could even lose NH - a tie is in his favor since there are more dem reps in 26 states - each state gets one vote.
I think CO is the true swing state. Kerry 2004 plus IA and NM. I think it will come down to CO or VA. That's why McCain is moving resources into VA and will probably move more into CO.

Also, the "meme du jour" from the GOP apologists seems to be that Palin's interviews were unfairly edited. Apparently, her Einstein moments wound up on the editing room floor. Of course Palin herself says that the media has "censored" her, but I think she may have missed the "edited" talking point.

Interesting development today. A week or so ago the McCain campaign wanted the VP debate completely canceled. Today, the day of the debate, they're expressing dissatisfaction with Gwen Ifill as the VP debate moderator because of a book she wrote that they have discovered all of a sudden. I get the impression the VP debate will be cancelled. Palin may not show up or if she does, turn it into a political protest of some sorts. I wouldn't put it pass her to refuse to respond to questions that are over her head by implying an underlying political motive to trap her.

Today's polls are merely signposts that indicate trends.
The REAL polls to watch are those in about two weeks. At that point, the voters' minds are pretty well set. If Senator Obama has a significant lead then, it's all over.

No, these polls DO matter, because every day their accuracy increases because there's so few days left until the election. We're talking about one month. Four weeks. That's IT. If Obama was only averaging +1 or +2, it would be one thing. But he's averaging around +5 or +6. At this point, McCain can't afford those numbers.

I watched the Biden vs. Palin debate last night. While Palin started off the debate stating that she was not going to answer any of the questions given her by the moderator. That she was going to give "straight talk". She didn't answer any of the questions asked her, but filled in time and time again the same talking points regarding her lifetime experiences as a mother, etc.. and nothing new on her legislative knowledge. Maybe she thrilled her base, but she did nothing for the other voters. She showed she is not qualified to be vice president or president. The right wing and the Republicans would rather see the rest of the country suffer with John McCain and Palin's polices instead of acknowledging that McCain and Palin and are not fit to run the country at this time.
