Poll: McCain Down 13 Points, Negative Campaign Backfiring
The new CBS/New York Times poll has nothing but bad news for John McCain. Barack Obama is ahead 52%-39% among likely voters in the horse-race, but the internals are perhaps even worse.
The poll shows the extent to which McCain's negative campaign has backfired. Obama's favorability rating stands at 52% favorable to 31% unfavorable, way ahead of John McCain's 39%-46% rating. In terms of the candidates' personalities, 62% of registered voters said they felt comfortable with Obama, while only 34% said they feel uneasy about him. The numbers for McCain: 47% comfortable, 49% uneasy.
Obama also has an edge on who is more trusted to handle a crisis, with 49% of registered feeling confident and 47% feeling uneasy about him. McCain is at 46% confident to 51% uneasy.
And this question suggests that McCain's attacks on Obama over income redistribution could be big loser:
Do you think it is a good idea or a bad idea to raise income taxes on households and businesses that make MORE than $250,000 a year in order to help provide health insurance for people who are not covered by health insurance?Good Idea 62%
Bad Idea 33%

That sounds like one of those fox news poll questions, not a smear though.

No. Dole didn't descend into the slime that McCain has. Dole was/is a decent man. Respondents answered the way they did for good reason. I hadn't seen the tragic fallout of the Bush policies up close until today. It's just unfathomable how this can have been allowed to happen.
A client I serve is moving out of the county into a family shelter. There are three children in this family. The mother has MS. There's no where else to go.
I learned my neighbor is back in the hospital after having a third surgery to remove a tumor. Unsuccessful. She almost bled to death at home the other night. She and her husband took out a second mortgage on their home to buy a new roof and a newer model car several years ago. They're frugal conservatives and they are in big trouble.
The house across the street has been foreclosed on. They have three children. I knew they'd had problems for a while. I didn't know it was this bad until I realized the other day no one lived there anymore. A neighbor said they just walked off and left the house.
This shouldn't be happening. But suddenly it's all around -- and it's alarming.
Change can't get here soon enough.

Yes I know - it's sickening.
In some areas though, some of them are creeping back in very surprising ways. Look at the Navajo Nation - their birth rate is 5 to 6 times caucasian American birth rates. They have a high infant death rate, but not that high. Their population has exploded.
But the real irony, to me, is that Mexico is slowly retaking all the territory it lost in the Mexican-American War.
I find it funny. That and the ultimate irony - the Okhay Owinge have a casino. It's called: The Seven Cities of Gold. That cracks my shit up everytime I pass it. The Spanish rampaged through here looking for those 7 Cities of Gold and the people they conquered are busy trying to get some of their own back.

Hewson is slightly psycho.
I finally went to his blog and posted a comment asking him to stop spamming these threads. He flipped out, went to First Draft looking for me and was so obnoxious there Athenae banned his ass.

You just have to wonder about people like that. Wandering the web in search of their detractors, or assumed detractors.
It was so strange that day or two that he tried to come here and make a show of being a TPM denizen. He probably had no idea the degree of frustration that awaited him. I even thought he had invented 1 or 2 aliases, to reply to him with accolades for his nonsense.
Yes, he's nuts.

Yes, I've seen psycho trolls run 2 or even 3 identities and hold conversations with themselves on a thread. It's fecking weird.

And Matty? Guessing his head exploded about a week after McCain's convention bounce evaporated.
It was almost like a clinical study. He was more or less sane until Hillary started losing, then the worse things got for her, the more was was consumed by that bizarre PUMA-with-a-Y-Chromosone thing where he believed he had some deep insight into Obama's troubling, troubling character that only he could see. Just like those nutters who run Hillaryis44 and and Captains Quarters. Had his own half-assed crazyhead website and everything.
The only two times I ever saw Josh dive into the comments to respond negatively to a specific commenter was in response to a couple of Weaver's rants. Both times it was like a major "whoa!"

I would love to hear from gotalife right now. Just to hear some good quality trolling.
But I do miss ny new buddy Hewson, who just couldn't resist breaking into lecture mode, and regurgitating something he read 10 minutes prior to logging on.
I fuckin' love the intertubes!

Update on my GOTV action in Minneapolis. I'm taking two shifts to drive people to and from polls. The GOTV org I'm working for needed wheel chair accessible van drivers more than they needed car drivers, so I'm going that route.
My boss heard I was taking the day off to do this, and he told me *not* to use any vacation time; also encouraged me to find five other people to pitch in. If we get 40 hours of volunteer time my company will donate $1500.
The times they are a changin'. This is getting better every day!

OMG! A new Obama ad in Spanish, with Barack speaking it fluently. This one will close the deal with the hispanic community.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZhu8SaodPw
Rough translation:
A message from Barack Obama.
We share a dream. Working hard, your family can succeed. If you get sick, you can have medical insurance. That our children can get a good education, mo matter if they're rich or poor. This is the american dream. I'm asking for your vote, not only for me and the democrats, but to keep that dream alive for you and your children.
I'm Barack Obama and I'm approve this message.

And did you see that comment under the video:
Obama speaks better Spanish than George Bush speaks English.
Awesome!!!
I have to say, I thought in this long journey with Barack since my support in Nov 2007, I thought my enthusiasm would fade somewhat along the way. But on the contrary, I like him more and more.
There was passion in his spanish.

It is already bothering me that I know Obama will be very gracious and say nice things about McCain during his victory speech on Nov. 4th.
I'd like him to acknowledge what a low life, scum filled campaign McCain ran, and wish him an obscure future.
Guess that's why I'm not a political advisor.
BTW there is an incredible 911 call from McCain's brother calling 911 about a traffic jam he was caught in. Tells the 911 operator, "Fuck You,"
These repugs really have a weird sense of entitlement.

The winner of the GOP primary in 2012 will tell exactly who is in control of the party. It was wonderfully discussed on Countdown. Either these intellectuals who back Obama permanantely leave the party or they end up trying to go back and take control. If they dont, the Repub party will remain a minority of lunatics, racists, asshole rich people and biggots(not all, just alot of them).

All-out euphoria and bedlam around the globe!
Here at Maggie's Ranch we have fireworks bought back in July and we're gonna have a huge bonfire in the middle of the driveway. And we'll be blasting away with Neil Young's 'Living With War.'

Look a little more closely at the CBS/NYT poll.
It suggests that Dems are hypermotivated and Republicans are demoralized. In particular, look at how the numbers are affected by the likely voter filter.
The pool of registered voters is 37% democrat, 31% repugnant, and 32% Indies. But the pool of likely voters is 41% dem, 28% repugnant, and 31% indie. (but I'm not sure I'm interpreting this right because I'm taking % of weighted rather than % of "effective" likely voters)
This suggests that if Dems stay hypermotivated and Repugs stay demoralized, then Dems will win by a large margin. For sure, I can't see anything that could possibly dampen the enthusiasm on our side. But I'm not sure that this poll has the level of enthusiasm on the Repugnant side correct. I would therefore take this poll with a large grain of salt.
UNWEIGHTED WEIGHTED
Total Respondents 1152
Total Registered voters 1046 1010
Registered voters – Republicans 326 287
Registered voters – Democrats 391 411
Registered voters – Independents 329 312
*Effective Likely Voters 771
*Every registered voter is included in the likely voter model, and is assigned a probability of voting, which is used to calculate the likely voter results. The sum of these probabilities is the effective number of likely voters.

I saw David Gregory this morning on MSNBC, and he suggested that the majority of Americans are more confident that McCain will capture Bin Laden.
I can't find that data in the CBS/New York Times poll, so what poll did Gregory get that information from, or did he just pull it out of his butt?
