McCain Campaign Now Attacks Michelle Obama Over Ayers
The McCain campaign is now broadening their attack on Obama's past association with William Ayers to include Michelle Obama -- even though McCain has repeatedly said spouses should be off limits during the campaign.
The attack? Bernardine Dohrn, Ayers' wife and fellow former Weatherman, went to work in 1984 for the major Chicago-based national law firm of Sidley & Austin, and three years later, Michelle joined the mega-firm as well.
That's the entire attack. We wish we were joking. But we aren't.
In launching this latest, McCain is ditching yet another formerly-claimed principle as he faces the growing likelihood of defeat. In a statement back in June, the McCain campaign said: "Senator McCain agrees with Senator Obama that spouses should not be an issue in this campaign, and he has stated that position frequently."
The attack on Michelle came on a McCain conference call with reporters this afternoon featuring John Murtagh, who has been hitting Obama over the Weather Underground's attack on his family's home back in 1970. Murtagh noted that Dohrn and Michelle Obama had both worked at the firm starting in the late 1980s.
The firm's Chicago office currently employs more than 500 lawyers.
Murtagh didn't even bother alleging that the two even knew each other, instead suggesting that they might have. If so, he said, the Obamas have known the two longer than suspected.
"If it is true" that the two women knew each other, Murtagh said, "the relationship is almost a decade older than Senator Obama has acknowledged. And that can very easily be resolved by Senator Obama, by Mrs. Obama, by Mr. Ayers and by Ms. Dohrn."
"And incidentally, I would emphasize that we've all been focusing on Senator Obama," said Murtagh. "I think we need to speak to his wife."
Keep in mind that this wasn't any surrogate speaking off the cuff. He was on a call organized by the McCain campaign, and he was apparently reading from a prepared statement, which would of course have been vetted by McCain aides. And so another once-cherished McCain principle gets junked in the service of self-parody.
Here's the audio of the call:
Late Update: To clarify, we don't know that the McCain campaign vetted Murtagh's statement attacking. But it was made on a campaign conference call, and it constitutes the McCain campaign's official position until the McCain campaign says otherwise.

Any word on Malia Obama's possible prenatal contact with Ayers or Dohrn?

I think I already read somewhere that the kids went to the same school (although that seems strange given how much older Ayers is). So maybe they can get that attack in there as well.

And we can't forget about Obama's ties to Osama. Fact (not rumor) has it that the same child that endorsed Ayers' violent tactics went to Pakistan as a 9-year-old. So sophisticated and talented was the kid that he became Osama's Toyota truck driver, his valet and his auto mechanic--he even wrote and produced those VCR tapes featuring Osama's bearded mug!
In addition, this fact sheet relates that Michelle was a partner-in-crime with her husband. She actually used the color printers at her office to copy several thousand copies of Hitler portraits then distribute them using GOVERNMENT ENVELOPES, postage paid!
Why are you "atrest", Chauncey? You should be out there, wearing a sandwich board proclaiming to the world that the Obama's are a menace to the world in general and to god-fearing Christians in particular!

Isn't anyone wondering what those 500+ lawyers at Sidley & Austin are thinking about Murtagh's charge that they are, and have been, harboring a Terrorist in their prestigious offices? A law firm's reputation is what justifies those high paying hourly billings. Anyone think they'll take this lying down? And Murtagh and McCain have smeared more than 500 of them.

Won't happen. Not unless the Obama campaign raises these matters directly (which they won't). The beauty of this strategy (solely from the McCain standpoint) is you can make any charge you want, get as downright filthy as possible (the only restraint being one's own moral compass), and so long as the MSM are dedicated to 'Objectivity', they will report everything you say, no matter how demented or demonstrably untrue (what journalist wants to risk it all by telling the emperor that he has no soul?).
The McCain campaign not only has the moral compass of a child molester, they employ it with a true sense of adventure (they seem preoccupied with discovering exactly how low they can sink and still get away with it), and the full knowledge that the Obama campaign will not even begin to descend to their level.
October 10, 2008 6:33 PM | Reply | Permalink
You are so right. Obama has too much composure and class to sink to his level. There is SOOO much that he could bring up, but won't. I guess Sidley & Austin are being accused of harboring terrorists? All these Republicans can come up with is that Obama and Michelle knew two people who were passionate about their ideals and were involved in despicable acts in their rebellious years. They were not running for Vice President of a country that their husband wants to be separate from, or palling around with corrupt bankers who cost the US $2 billion. These issues need to be examined more closely by the MSM.

McCain and Palin are doing to themselves what the MSM wouldn't dare do to them. Katie and even Wolff are just sitting back, laughing at the spectacle that is the Republican ticket knowing full well that they don't have to point a critical eye (and be criticized for doing so) at these two; the vicious duo of John & Sarah are their own worst enemies. Their defeat will be crushing to both of them, I'm sure.

McCain would love that... I think the Obama campaign should simply recirculate the quote about the spouses being off-limits. Or, even run an ad with those words, and talk about how McCain has, yet again, gone back on his word. The focus should be on hammering McCain for going back on his word.
The McCain campaign usually overreaches in its attacks, and, true to form, they've done so again. I can only hope that the blowback is fierce.

If it's fair and relevant to go after Obama for sitting at a Board of Directors table with a former terrorist then I think another candidate's getting into bed (literally!) with a current (until a couple of years ago) member of a secessionist party is just as relevant.
Sometimes I wish there was a huge megaphone that could be hooked up and all the rabid, angry, ready to believe the worst voters who are crowding into the McCain/Palin rallies could hear a full list of the things that the Obama campaign has NOT gone into that would have made such good fodder:
-- Cindy's addiction
-- Cindy's theft from her non-profit
-- cheating on and then abandoning Carol
-- Palin's connections to AIP
-- Troopergate
-- McCain's confessions to the Viet Cong
-- Keating scandal
-- a host of other 'questionable' associations
-- etc, etc, etc,
I know they can't, because that would of course be bringing them up -- but sometimes I'd just love to read the list to a frothing-at-the-mouth voter convinced that Obama is somehow suspicious because he's known 3 'shocking' people in his life.
Speaking of Cindy, did she look really weird (or maybe it was wired) when she did her mother-outrage bit the other day. Should put that clip up side by side with Michelle refusing to 'go there' on Larry King and say "Which would you chose for the next First Lady?"

"Following his discharge in 1945, Hensley and his brother went back to work for Marley in his United Sales Company in Phoenix and United Distributors in Tucson.[6][7] In 1948, both brothers were prosecuted by the federal government and convicted of multiple counts of falsifying liquor records in a conspiracy to conceal illegal distribution of whiskey against post-war rationing regulations.[14][9][4] Jim Hensley received a six-month sentence (later upheld but suspended by an appeals court) while his brother received a year in federal prison, and both were fined.[4] In 1953, Jim Hensley and Marley were charged by federal prosecutors with falsifying liquor records.[14] Defended by future Supreme Court Justice William Rehnquist, they were acquitted.[14][9]
If the sentence was 6 months, I'm not sure it would be a felony-level crime. Don't know.

If that is the case, McCain is sullied by Obama who is sullied because of Ayers and Obamas wife worked in the same company as Ayers wife, because after all, McCain and Obama work for the same company.
Makes a lot of sense....

Plus, both their names start with M-C-C-A. Plus McCarthy's first name - Eugene - is the Greek version of John.
Oh, and by the way, remember Manchurian Candidate? It's about a veteran who had been a POW and was brainwashed by the Communists but has no memory of it. And he's described as "an insufferable man." Sounds like McCain, right?
Since throwing crazy accusations out there seems to be legitimate campaigning now.

I know I have a few dealbreakers in my own past that would forever preclude me from running for President. For example:
Thirty years ago my ex-husband stole cable television -- all 10 channels -- for a few months and I knew about it.
Back in 1978, I got drunk at a party and promised to play saxophone in the City Band. I am not, nor have I ever been, a saxophone player.
One time in college, I went with my boyfriend to his freshman psychology class, where it turned out they were having a test. Instead of getting up and leaving, I took the test but didn't put my name on it. (I heard later that I had scored rather well.)
I'm afraid if the Republicans hear about this, they will hunt down my children and make them spill the beans about the rest of my shady past.

This is so pathetic. Throw enough (any) shit against the wall and hope it sticks. Not only does it fall far short of the definition of the word tenuous, but it is kind of ironic to see the McCain campaign keep soiling their own in their desperation. First, Walter Annenberg, who could be fairly said to be an uber Republican, Reagan-appointed ambassador, etc., and now Sidley & Austin which is a blue stocking, corporate, management firm extraordinaire with deep Republican ties. Duck, incoming. Evidently, they couldn't care less about the collateral damage done to their once (and hopefully, now former, like everyone else who has gotten a whiff of this Steve Schmidt-inspired odious campaign) allies.

Folks, we are talking to ourselves and preaching to the choir. I strongly urge every member of this blog to send letters to the editor to their home town papers. This is my letter I sent this morning. I try to send at least one letter a day and often a letter to the papers in the areas where the two mavericks cum bigots are appearing.
At precisely the moment when this nation, brought to its knees by the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression, needs to unite and act as one, John McCain and Sarah Palin are recklessly trying to divide the American people. Forget about "Country First". McCain and Palin are putting Campaign First. In stump speech after stump speech, McCain and Palin are actively and knowingly stirring up racial hatred and class warfare. This is not only criminal (there are laws against inciting to violence), it is absolutely the kind of selfish divide and conquer politics that dragged us down into this financial mess in the first place.
We are only going to get through this crisis with calm, cool and intelligent leadership. To this end, Senators Barack Obama and Joe Biden have already started putting together a transition team that includes some of the best and brightest economists in the country. Mr. McCain and Mrs. Palin plan to wait until after the election to assemble their team. Does this mean that they don't plan to change anything?
The time has come to say NO to "us against them" politics and to start voting for our self interests: our jobs, our homes, our economy, our security, and our future. After eight years of divisive, me first politics, it is time for a leader who really will put America first and lead us, as one great nation, back to prosperity.

I think Obama should start tying the negativity to the international unrest in the financial markets. Instead of selling confidence and trust, the Republicans are selling fear and distrust. I have to believe it really is contributing to the emotional climate both here and abroad. What's funny about reading some of the comments is that they apply logic to McCain's smear. There isn't any. There isn't supposed to be any. It's barroom taunt.
I assume this is partly to stir up the base, and partly to try to throw Obama off his stride. I assume the Obama campaign understands that McCain will do anything, and that includes attacking his wife in the waning days of the campaign -- with, perhaps, the goal of getting Obama get angry and overreach.
I hope folks don't think any of this is easy for Obama, and that just because he has kept his cool so far that he always will. He's very, very good, but he's also a mere mortal.

CNN just showed a clip of McCain telling his audience to be respectful of Sen Obama. Richard Wolf of Newsweek was on Chris Matthews show and said McCain is backing off because his internal polling is showing his negatives soaring through the roof. Plus Fox's own polling shows that the Ayers thing is having no impact. So watch for the walk back by the McCain camp over the next few days.

From MSNBC's First Read:
From NBC/NJ's Adam Aigner-Treworgy
McCain just called on his supporters to be respectful at his town hall.
"We want to fight, and I want to fight, but we will be respectful," McCain said to boos at first. "I want everyone to be respectful," he then said and people began to clap.
In response to a later question he added, "You can be respectful and point out facts," as he called on his supporters to point out facts to their neighbors but be respectful.
*** UPDATE *** McCain just added, "He is a decent person and a person who you do not have to be scared as president of the United States."
More to come.

I have asked the question before and unless I missed it there has been no answer... Everyone just seems to assume this Murtagh nut says Ayers firebombed his house. Yet he says his fathers problem was with the Black Panther Party. When did the Weather Underground become the Black Panther Party? Is there any historical record supporting anything Murtagh says? Why should we trust as fact anything any of these McCain surrogates are saying?
October 10, 2008 6:15 PM | Reply | Permalink
My thoughts exactly! Here is Murtagh's little essay on the topic:
http://www.city-journal.org/2008/eon0430jm.html
Note he presents no direct evidence whatsoever that the Weather Underground was responsible. The police never got so far as even identifying a suspect.
The only circumstantial evidence he presents is that several members of a contingent of the Weather Underground blew themselves up a few weeks later while they were making pipe bombs. However, even this fact is inconclusive at best. According to the police, the house in which they were making those bombs contained enough explosives to level half the block. However, the bombs detonated at the Murtagh residence were gerry-rigged gasoline bombs, not pipe bombs.
Finally, as you note, the reason why the Murtagh family was targeted in the first place was that his father, a federal judge, was presiding over the trial of 21 members of the Black Panthers. John Murtagh presents no evidence whatsoever to rule the Black Panthers out as a much more obvious suspect.
John Murtagh is a fraud (surprise!) who is obviously using his victimhood to get his name in the paper.

And by the way, can we now start asking the question which has been nagging me for a while:
Have we ever, in our history as a nation, had a certifiable home-wrecker as the First Lady of the United States?
I'd really like to know! Of course, the drug abuse thing has been done to death (practically seems a qualification for First Lady at this point). But the stealing drugs from a charity - like a common crack whore - also seems quite new.

No, Obama's not going to get angry. He's going to mock McCain for this. Mock him mercilessly, and then we'll see who loses his cool.

I know -I'm totally amazed at just how clean these people are.
It's obvious that the Obamas saw early that their work, and Barack's political activity would make their lives subject to a lot of scrutiny, so they took the sensible route of living lives which would bear scrutiny. Pretty simple!
But McCain sure is raising the expectations that he has an Obama-destroying narrative to give at the next debate. And he ain't got shit, and has descended to attacking Michele.
The way I see it, all McCain has to do to fail miserably at the next debate is not mention any of this stuff. Obama has no need to defend himself if McCain doesn't raise it. And if he doesn't, he's a punk, a skirt-hiding, can't say it to my face punk. And nothing McCain can say will add up to a knock-out, or even staggering blow.
McCain has painted himself into a corner. He's stuck. He's done, so done.

Obama does not have to say a thing! That's the beauty of it. If McCain dares to bring it up, Obama can rip it to pieces. And if McCain doesn't, Obama doesn't need to say a thing.
For a little fun, try and imagine how McCain can present this Ayers thing at the debate such that it constitutes a powerful narrative of betrayal and treason. It's gonna take some doing. And I repeat, after this week, McCain has got to bring it up. He is so lost.

I think that McCain's attacks are doing more than hurting his own brand, I think that he and his followers are taking down the Republican party and conservatism with them, with the economic crisis helping them along. Attacking Obama's wife? Yeah, lets see how well that works out.

These negative attacks wont help McCain win, but it almost ensures the continued deep divisions in this country, providing a shot in the arm for the red state/blue state mentality. The bitter attacks on Barack and Michelle is fast becoming the republicans Clintonization of the Obamas.
Get used to it folks. No matter what Obama does in the next four or eight years, or what he does for the remainder of his life after his political career is over, there will be those on the right attacking him.

Obama should just refuse to debate until he cleans up his campaigns act and stop attacking Michelle. Pull what Johnny boy thretend and refuse to show up at a debate, until his campaign cleans up it's act!
1.There is no room for violence in this campaign, while we are in a critical point in out economy.
2. I will suspend telling the truth about McCain if he wi;; suspend his lies.

Agree. Better to go the other way as someone said upthread ---- just ignore him. When asked a question about, say, the economy, outline his position and support it and conclude. If asked a question about McCain's position in contrast to his, answer that but quickly move to focus on his own. Let McCain (who has little else to say) be the only one being negative and turning attention to his opponent. Obama should pretend he's already president and simply explain the issue, whatever it is, to the American people in the same way he would if there was no one else on the stage. --- In addition to making him look way Presidential, it would probably enrage McCain more than any sort of attention, even negative attention, would.

Obama should just refuse to debate until...
Your CONCERN is noted, troll!
Obama doesn't have to do or say anything! All he has to do is show up at the debate, ready, and he is. If McCain doesn't bring up all the ACORN-Ayers terrorist-pals bullshit, MCcAIN IS TOTALLY PUNCKED, PAWNED, KAPUT. If McCain does bring it up, Wow.
But McCain has got to bring it. He can't tell his followers he's got a knockout narrative of Obama-as-traitor and then sort of forget it at the debate. Why is he debating a terrorist, then?
And if McCain does bring it up...
He is so screwed. The only thing he can do to avoid coming out of the next debate with Obama owning is white ass is something he simply is not capable of doing!!! He will either look demented and apathetic or demented and raving mad.
Gosh, has McCain had good campaign advice, or what?

Can we clear up one thing about this whole Ayers issue. I notice that a number of people are creating blogs which are dedicated to defending Mr. Ayers, and claiming that it is Ayers that the McCain campaign is falsely attacking. It is not. They are attacking Senator Obama, and now his wife, and claiming that the Obamas are fellow travelers with a known terrorist. They are not. That is the big lie. However, the worst thing that we can engage in is to fall for the blogs that are trying to present Mr. Ayers as a living saint who never engaged in any violent acts.
Senator Obama agrees that Ayers has that history, so Ayers should not be the focus of a TPM innocence project.
