McCain Campaign Attacks TPM, Keeps Denying Our "Carved B" Story
Last Friday we reported here that McCain's Pennsylvania spokesperson fed local reporters a highly incendiary version of the hoax story about the attack on the McCain volunteer well before the facts were in, telling reporters outright that the "B" carved into the victim's face stood for Barack.
The McCain campaign has now denied the story on two separate occasions, faulting TPM's reporting on it.
"The liberal blog post" has "no basis in fact," a McCain spokesperson has now told Channel 4 in Pittsburgh, in a reference to our story. Before that, McCain national spokesperson Brian Rogers denied the story to MSNBC, claiming sloppy reporting by the Pennsylvania reporters.
Let's be as clear as possible here: Two separate news organizations in Pennsylvania are on record saying that McCain's Pennsylvania spokesperson gave them the incendiary version of the story.
Either those news organizations independently decided to lie and smear the McCain campaign in identical ways, or the McCain campaign is lying in its denials.
Let's go over what happened.
Our initial story in no way reported that McCain's national campaign had a hand in pushing the story. In fact, it explicitly noted that there was no evidence that that had happened. Rather, our story simply reported that according to Pennsylvania news orgs, McCain's state spokesperson, Peter Feldman, had done this.
The news director at KDKA, John Verrilli, told us explicitly that the spokesperson had given one of his reporters a detailed version of the attack that included a claim that the alleged attacker said, "You're with the McCain campaign? I'm going to teach you a lesson." Verrilli also told TPM that the McCain spokesperson had claimed that the "B" stood for Barack.
We also reported that an earlier version of a story on the attack on WPXI's web site contained a version of the hoax attack from Feldman that was virtually identical to the one given to KDKA.
MSNBC followed up on our reporting, contacting the WPXI reporter who had done the story. The reporter told MSNBC that he had indeed gotten the quotes from Feldman.
So here's where we are. The McCain campaign is asking you to believe that both these news orgs either got these quotes from the PA spokesperson wrong or made them up -- independently, and in identical ways.
Either that highly improbable series of events did take place, or the McCain campaign is lying in its denials. It's that simple.

You rock, Greg.
You and Josh and Eric have done a smashing job since the primaries ended. The primaries were tough for us - two really strong candidates and a hard damn fight. But since the nomination was nailed down, y'all have been awesome!

This is like the $150K wardrobe debacle. It was gone from the public's mind until the McCain/Palin camp refuels the discussion with denials. Denials that can be easily shown to be lies by their camp.
It's difficult to fathom this is anything other than individuals (Feldman in this case; Palin in the other) trying to save their own ass in a sunk campaign.

O that lying fraud of a bitch.
She's telling people those aren't her clothes - she's the world's biggest liar. I read the GQ piece - those are her clothes - she has been on a coast to coast shopping spree. The entire fucking campaign has been one long shopping spree.
I'll bet anything that when people get out of Alaska they want to hit all the stores that Alaska doesn't have. ANd that's what she's done.
She lies as easily as she breathes - those are her goddamn clothes. She just didn't pay for them. She's the mistress of manipulating people into doing shit for her and then she turns right around and stabs them in the back every time. She has a big reputation for this.

Have you seen the Obama/Biden campaign ad against her?
It's devastating, if you ask me. There's images of John McCain with quotes from him about how he's shaky on the economy, and may have to choose a veep blah blah blah why don't I just give you the link?
Ouch. This one's gonna leave a mark
What can you complain about if you're the McCain campaign? It doesn't even directly criticize Palin. Can you criticize the shot of her winking? Well, Rich "Sparklburst" Lowry thought that was the most awesomest part of the whole debate. This is a pretty good ad in that it's negative in a very respectful and decent way.

I've said this before, but if the plan all along was to give the clothes to charity, how come it took the RNC until the morning after the story broke to come up with that as a response? If it really had been the plan all along, the response should have been immediate.
So yes, they were making it up, and Ms. Main Street Wasilla will likely head back to Alaska with several steamer trunks full of loot.

And an absurd lie - any woman can take one look at her in one of those outfits and know it's a lie because they fit her like they were made for her which means she tried the motherfuckers on before they were paid for.

As the NYTs reported, Ms. Palin's $150,000 wardrobe really wasn't. It would seem, to the intrepid NYTs reporter, that a great deal more money was reported spent on clothes than actually was. There's quite a bit of "slush" in there, reportedly.
And we have an adept, tho expensive, make-up artist, and a weak-minded, or even emotionally unstable campaign employee, whose bruises were completely gone by the time she left the police station.
We know what didn't happen to Ms. Todd, did we ever find out exactly what did happen?
I wouldn't want to be irresponsible and not speculate, as they used to say about Clinton's personal imbroglios.

We have Greg Sargent on the job. At last, he and his fellows aren't Willy Loman, anymore; attention is being paid. (Maybe not by everyone...yet.) The cards are being put on the table regularly, though. They're only good if you want a fair game. Fortunately most people do. The aces up the sleeves cheats are going to be booted from the game at least once in awhile now.
The longer they throw their B.S. into the pot, the more outraged hornswaggled others will be. In the end, that will work out all the better.

I'll toos my kudos into the pot as well. I was dismayed by a lot of the pro-Clinton stories TPM's crack Election Central was scraping together during the Primary season, but redemption is this plentiful only rarely; at least to these eyes. You are, like the man said, da bomb.
As for why the MSM isn't pushing back harder on the Feldman story, I have to wonder what people expect. The decades long drumbeat of rhetoric about 'Liberal media' has got corporate news outlets so inchoately spooked and over-cautious they wouldn't report that 2+2=4 unless they get it from an official source.
I'm sure there are plenty of reporters who would love to tear into McCain/Palin untruths with a vengeance; they just need to have someone from the Obama campaign go on television and literally call them goddamned liars . . . and even then they'd feel a responsibility to 'report both sides' (said sides being Fact and Fiction) as theough they had equivalent legitimacy.
