McCain Adviser Admits That Campaign Doesn't Want To Talk About Economic Crisis

Buried at the end of this Washington Post piece on the aggressive attacks McCain intends to wage in the campaign's final days is this unfortunate quote from a senior McCain adviser:

"We are looking for a very aggressive last 30 days," said Greg Strimple, one of McCain's top advisers. "We are looking forward to turning a page on this financial crisis and getting back to discussing Mr. Obama's aggressively liberal record and how he will be too risky for Americans."

That seems like an awfully candid admission, if an inadvertent one: The McCain campaign doesn't want to talk about the economic crisis anymore; the McCain camp would rather talk about how "risky" Obama is.

What's more, the "turning the page" line seems awfully flip. Why entrust McCain to steer our economy out trouble if his own top adviser admits that McCain and company don't want to talk about solving the crisis and are hoping to merely "turn the page" on it?

Seems like a line the Obama campaign just might grab on to.

It is another way of saying the campaign isn't about the issues, it's about personalities.

Or about propaganda. Nonsense. The war on logic. Houses of cards - from packs of lies.

Which is a segue into this:

The Joy of a Sentence - That Makes Sense

Great post.

They operate with the view that the truth is what it is, but a lie is a creation and thus it can be controlled and manipulated.

user-pic

Good Point. Reminds me of Buddhist saying:

Things are as they are. And cannot be otherwise."

They've tried to tamper with that. They are now finding out that Karma sucks.

I love the way you put that. Very concise. Well said.

Nice post, TeraP. I enjoyed that. I left a comment there for you.

A sweet post to read first thing in the morning. Thanks Thera.

user-pic

Thank you for your kind words and especially for the solidarity.

Of course they're saying that, because when you shine a light on the McCain approach to the economy, it's clear he's got nothing. Not a leg to stand on.

user-pic

Amen. Again I say it. Amen.

We need more sunshine! Not more lies.

I suspect if Obama pushes the issue of McCain's role in the economic crisis, McCain will have to respond. After all, there's plenty of footage that can be used to create attack-ads showing McCain efforts to mediate the crisis. Of course, all his efforts resulted in absolute failures.

user-pic

They don't stand a chance on the economy and they know it. They have no answers and they know it. They ARE a continuation of the last four years and they know it. And they know most Americans now know it.

Their only hope is trying to destroy Obama personally. The next 5 weeks will be hideous. Expect the worst coming from them. McCain has nothing else left.

user-pic

oops - a continuation of the last EIGHT years.

user-pic

Expect the worse from them. But expect the best from the American People. As Barack keeps saying: The American People are not stupid!"

The tipping point has come and gone. The tide has turned. Stupidity is passe. The truth will out. And the American People will come out in droves - to vote for truth, for the sweeping away of lies and lying politicians.

Hallelujah!

Damn straight!

I hear the soundtrack building to a crescendo...

Gift keeps on giving another easy lien t slot into stump speeches and ads

Gee. That's surprising. They should get Malia to dish on why her dad hates pets, too.

user-pic

So, McCain is shortening the field and going negative in his hope that he can win the Bush states through Rovian politics?

I'm sure it will catch the Obama camp completely off guard. :)

Nice snark!

I was hoping Maverick POW would last a little longer.

On a side note, has anyone seen the "John McCain Experience" crack from Family Guy? That's pretty hilarious.

user-pic

Link?

There was a good reason that Palin ducked the deregulation question during the debate, even after Biden called her out on it -- McCain is the Deregulator.

And Obama and Biden must never let him forget it.

Think how mad it will make McCain!

After almost getting his nuts cut off with the Keating 5 scandal, he had no other choice but to deregulate the industry so as to preserve the family jewels for future generations.

If you look back,,,,, that's what the Hoover people did to FDR, and you see what happened.

Remember Hoover never uttered a word to FDR in the limo on the way to the Inaugration, FDR spent the time waving his silk hat and smiling and waving to the crowds.

BHO is the FDR of our time.

I am still infuriated over Sarah Palin's whole "hey, quit playin' the blame game" remark. Your policies ruined an economy and started a fraudulent war. It's not like you forgot to pick us up from soccer practice.

lol! Dude, you have some of the best stuff out here. I'm a fan.

The problem is she doesn't realize that.

If she had a shred of self-awareness, she would have broken down in tears halfways through the debate and apologized for her hubris, then withdrawn as a candidate.

How have we done the last 8 years with a president with no capacity for reflection?

She didn't just drink the kool-aid, she bought into the franchise and is making it herself.

Wasilla.... meth... er koolaid capital of Alaska... coming soon to the lower 48... SP hopes.

Here's the thing, John. I don't know if you've checked the polls lately, or the Intrade numbers, or even just stuck your stubby little finger (attached to your T-Rex arms, which I realize I'm not supposed to mention) in the wind to see which way it blows.

But you just don't get to set the conversation table anymore. Out of respect for your status as a US Senator, we will allow you 5 minutes of response time on each issue, but you may not speak first any longer.

Thank you.

Furthermore, you are banned from ever saying "Maverick", "Hanoi", "Vietnam", "Fundamental(s)" or "Imprisoned" in public discourse ever again.

Or "naive" or "blame game" or...

"Just doesn't understand", or "Honorable", "service to this country"

...and we are not your goddamned 'freinds, John.

Ah! How could I forget that?

Here, here! No friends of the angry, lying curmudgeon!

No more "surge" solutions to nowhere.

Ha!

As the panel pointed out on Washington Week last night, one reason (among many, but they talked about this one) that this won't work is that the Paulson plan is not going to improve economic news, but instead keep the economy stable as it currently is. Economic news--like jobless claims--will continue to be bad, then, through the election. So even though the Paulson plan is no longer news (and I think even in this fast-paced news cycle it will likely take about a week for the networks to stop talking about it a lot), the economy will remain news, and not good news.

For example, we just found out today that foreclosures in our county went up 70% last month. And I live in Texas--one of the states that has been relatively spared by the economic crisis.

"...though the Paulson plan is no longer news (and I think even in this fast-paced news cycle it will likely take about a week for the networks to stop talking about it a lot), the economy will remain news, and not good news."/

Seconded. I would bet that the economic news is actually going to worsen considerably as the markets begin to realize that the steaming pile of bad paper, upon which their entire foundation rests, didn't actually go anywhere. Furthermore, banks on main street are not going to be any more willing to quit hoarding cash than they are now so main street will continue to starve for credit. Good luck to anyone who needs credit to maintain liquidity.

sigh... missed the closing tag for blockquote...

from "Seconded..." on are my comments.

Are others having problems? Loading is funny. Avatars appear and disappear. For some reason the recs may not be working on my post... But the truth will out nonetheless!

My posts seem to be going through just fine, Thera. Also the rec counter incremented when I clicked it. What browser are you using?

user-pic

Firefox. Things are a bit better now. Thanks for your reply.

user-pic

Firefox. Are you seeing all the avatars? Some have disappeared for me that were available earlier. And the format of the threads keeps changing. I know they'll be doing beta testing this weekend. I'm waiting for my "orders."

Thanks for your reply. I'm patient. Heck, I've only been waiting 8 months here!

had to run an errand... yeah some of the avatars have been appearing and disappearing, but not mine so far, I wonder if that's because they are wider than 60 pixels. I use Firefox 3.something, and most things on the page look good to me.

From the Knowing thy Enemy File -- Here is Kristol's advice on how the attack should go:

http://www.weeklystandard.com/Content/Public/Articles/000/000/015/647fpfdp.asp?pg=2

But what kind of offensive?

The positive component is pretty straightforward: McCain and Palin are common sense conservatives and proven reformers. The record of reform can be emphasized and contrasted with Obama's and Biden's record of conventional, go-along, get-along liberalism. And implicitly: If McCain and Palin are reformers and outsiders, it's not Bush's third term. More important is the negative message. The McCain campaign has to convince 51 percent of the voters they can't trust Barack Obama to be our next president. This has an ideological component and a character component.

I still think it won't work.

Neither do I. I think were in the calm before the storm, knowing that a Rovian storm is out there just off shore, and in the lull, we just pondering just how McCain will try to implement this strategy.

It seems to me, acamus, that they are out of bullets.

Sure, they can keep on keeping on with character attacks, and of course keep hammering at the ideological side with classic Reaganesque b.s. and drivel.

But truthfully, don't you think that crap is like listening to the song, "Yummy Yummy Yummy" over and over at this point - for most people?

For anyone who hasn't heard the the "Most Inane Pop Song of ALLL TIME", um... check it out.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ozqfOzqMvlQ

I agree that they're basically out of bullets. The ones who would respond to this drivel is already in their camp. I just kind of find it amusing to see them struggle with what is a lost cause.

I would MUCH rather hear "Yummy Yummy" over and over than hear anything more from the Bush-era Republicans.

lol... well when you throw down the gauntlet like that, I have to agree - so would I.

More better lies. He wants more better lies.

Man, there were times back in the middle of August when this comment board got downright depressing. All McCain did back then was lay the groundwork for the press to begin backing away from him. Now, when he needs them the most to help him push the negative crap, he's become toxic. Heck, MoDo won't even do his bidding.

He looks older and older each day. If Chuckles Krauthammer has thrown in the towel, you know the internals at McMoron Central are showing "red alert". Stick a fork in him, he's done.

On CNN yesterday they were discussing why McCain chose to leave Michigan. Toobin was calling them idiots for officially announcing it, and Carl Berstein (I think) was saying that they had no choice because their internal polls were showing it was far worse (+15 territory) in MI than the public polls were showing.

these people are idiot savants.

Idiots yes. . .not sure I would insult all the savants out there though :-)

One more shining example of McCain's contempt for the electorate. The single most important issue facing our country right now, the one Americans want and need to talk about the most, and he's flipping us the bird.

Isn't it incredible how the McCain campaign has followed the Clinton campaign step for step?

First: Experience vs. Change - FAIL
Then: my Change vs. your Change - FAIL
Now: Kitchen sink

Brilliant!

I know! I was pointing this out a while ago, they've also done the "Terrorists love Obama, Obama is dangerous, you want meeeee answering red phone!" deal like Clinton (although I think repubs pushed this one even harder).

I think they're going down the dangerous route. I would expect the words "risky" and "dangerous" to be used over and over by McCain at the next debate.

Problem is at this point people are probably more likely to associate those words with McCain than Obama.

The media narrative is starting to take hold... McCain is erratic while Obama is the steady hand in the storm.

Especially when it's McCain growling "dangerous" through gritting teeth.

I think it has something to do with the fact that Obama just keeps doing what he's been doing and his opponents all self destruct the same way around him.

Biggest difference is O stopped going negative 2 months before the race ended. Now he can just ratchet up the heat right up until election day.

A little OT but...The OJ's lawyer speaking after OJ was just found guilty on all accounts and the whole time there was someone holding up a sign behind the lawyer that read "I'm Palin, I failin'" with a unflattering photo of her.

The creativity of Obama supporters this year is astounding! (I myself have OBAMA in 3 foot high letters on the tarp the contractors put on my gigantic chimney... till they can do the repairs.)

The Obama Camp is going to roll out a major campaign today at a stump speech, that will include radio and television ads based around "John McCain's Radical Health Care Plan". I love how they're going to at least try to claim the term "radical" before the McCain camp rolls out the official Ayers smear.

Also I expect the quote highlighted by Greg in the original post to quickly appear in Obama ads and stump speeches. The best way to fight the on-coming smear campaign is to tell folks what the McCain Campaign is doing, and it's doubly effective when you use the staffers own words against them.

You had Davis(I believe) saying it's not about issues but personality, and now you have Strimple saying they don't want to talk about the financial crisis anymore, but instead talk about how "risky" Obama is.

What is amazing is that I think that this was when they had planned to roll out the Health Care attack all along. McCain's people flail about on a day to day basis, the Obama team just keeps unfolding a large masterful strategy.

user-pic

For me it's also about language. About how they misuse language to destroy sense. Hillary tried that too. We need to call them out every time they try to destroy logic and impose nonsense.

"Unfortunately, the Republican book-keeping strategy of 'turning the page' when you do not like what the page looks like is not going to work here. This is an issue that must be taken far more seriously than as merely an inconvenience to John McCain's presidential campaign."

Life is unfair.

Heinrich Boll (should be an umlaut on the "o") wrote a wonderful book which I have read many times, called The Glass Bead Game. It's about a society where they played these abstract, very sophistocated games. But they had forgotten history. It comes to a very bad end... and the message is...you forget history at your peril.

The repubs have tried to forget history. They like to rewrite as they go. To erase and simply state that what we saw and heard was not so.

But the internet is getting in their way. That's one reason we will win this! And maybe one reason why they will have to change their game plan. Or their party will die.

Meanwhile, wasn't THIS SORT OF THING what a lot of people were worried aboutr when the Fed started passing out money?

$54 billion of the Fed’s loan had gone to shore up A.I.G.’s troubled structured-finance unit and its securities lending business.

Sigh... Like a junky borrowing money from his Mommy to keep the phone turned on, and using it to buy more dope. Yep, more of this is what we can expect from the assholes on Wall Street.

user-pic

That's it. They're addicts! Detox is needed. In so many areas of our society.

So? What were you expecting? Bu$h waited until the last minute to pop his October Surprise. It just popped a little too early. Too bad he never followed thru with his promise in 2000 to work both sides of the isle. I suspect things will get far worst than what anyone can imagine, cause no one but Bu$h knows the extend of the damage he, his administration and his cronies have caused. So just sit back, make some popcorn, and drink a beer. The show is just getting started.

Well, about the swith now to turn super mean and dirty: we knew the fuckers had to do something, right? The Palin selection was made because they were losing and desperate for a winning strategy, and I am pretty sure because Kay Bailey Hutchinson told them to go fuck a duck. Anyway, all Palin has done is greatly compicate their pre-existing problems (and getting her to quit wouldn't help much at all). So being now worse off even than they were, they need something else. Here, utter filth. At least we know.

You know, I would have more respect for McCain if I thought he had considered Hutchison. I don't agree with either one of them on just about any issue, but I think Hutchison actually knows her stuff and is a legitimate choice for someone who needs to "be ready on day one." But, from the muffled voices of Republican insiders and from the list of VP "finalists" that were bandied about, I don't think they ever seriously considered her. And I'll lay you money that she knows more about energy than Palin does.

What dumbfounds me about the McCain campaign--and really the Republican Party more generally--is how much more competitive they would have been if they stuck with the "2000 John McCain image," which I think was also fabricated but at least had real appeal to people. It's so clear that he became so focused during the primaries on winning the wacko vote that now they can't go back; they just have to go more and more for the wackos. I can't see how this strategy will have much appeal to independents, especially if Obama keeps on the steady and stable image--which he seems oddly (but thankfully) able to maintain ad infinitum.

Hello, ethel08. I guess we will find out more about whether he seriously courted Hutchison in the upcoming tell-all books. Should be some best sellers recounting the whole ever-so-peculiar set of failures.

McCain has given Obama enough ammo to last 30 days. Let him go negative and reap the results.

First. Can you say Keating 5?
Second. Can you say deregulation and bank failures?
Third. Can you say economic bailout?

There is no mistaking McCain signature handy work laced through it. And that's a whole lotta ammo complete with tracer bullets to lite up the way and see the damage at it hits the target.

And all the Obama ads have to say is:

Did you know that john McCain was responsible for ...

Constitution. Rule of Law. Oath of Office.

My Thoughts:

1. The Obama campaign knew this was coming especially if they were ahead a month before the election. I have noticed that the ads they are run lately are flipping the page on McCain and calling him the same thing that McCain will call him ie McCain's "radical" health care plan, we can't afford McCain for he will raise the deficits, etc.

2. Just as McCain is going to try to paint Obama as the "risky" choice, Obama is going to paint McCain as the "risky" choice. McCain will go after Obama's character but Obama will go after McCain's character particularly that he is a liar, dishonorable, angry, and erratic.

3. McCain will go after Rezko and Ayers but not Wright. I think that they want the 527s to go after Wright. I find that interesting.

4. McCain may have Ayers & Rezko but Obama has Keating Five, Alaska Independence Party, McCain's zillion lobbyists who lobby for Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac, foreign governments, etc. Thus Obama has ammunition too.

5. Obama comes from Chicago and knows how to play dirty without looking like he is.

Get Ready!

user-pic

Rezko? Ha! You think Americans are going to worry about Rezko when they're focused on Wall Street? There's an old saying "The Democrats will steal it from you, but they will give you some of it back." Of course, the Republicans give you none of it back. That's how Obama wins. If the choice is between Chicago street politics and New York bankers, this year Chicago wins.

Glad you included 'etc.' in number 4. I thought for just a sec you might have been neglecting TrooperGate, which will be in the news next weekend, for example.

October 10. Mark your calendars.

user-pic

I don't believe for a moment they aren't going to bring back the Rev Wright thing, and in a big way. McCain said he wouldn't go there? So what? He said he wouldn't so lots of things he's done on a daily basis. Why would anyone believe he won't try to use it in Oct? It's coming.

Yes, the simplest way to figure out what is going on is to listen what McCain says about anything, and expect the opposite.

I think a critical point of the Kristol article I posted above is that the danger for McCain right now is that the meme gets out there that it's all over. (Obama +6 in today's Ras poll, with 51%) McCain and Palin have to create, at any cost, the idea that Obama can be defeated. Wright is just one of those avenues.

This may be wishful thinking but in this environment, I'm inclined to believe that the more shit McShame throws, the more it will remind voters that McShame's the candidate whose character stinks.

Besides, between Keating, the campaign "suspension," Rick Davis, Charlie Black and the Troopergate cover-up, he's far more vulnerable to attack than Obama -- though the more Obama keeps his focus on the economy and the issues, the better.

The polls show most people believe McCain is the more negative campaigner of the two, and Obama's favorability ratings are better.

How does that saying go: Obama is rubber, McCain is glue...

user-pic

I think they're sunk already. We in the blogs did a super job of laying out the frames. mcShame as a Liar. A Gambler. A hypocrite. Reckless. A self-promoter of "heroic" things he is NOT. A shameless purveyor of appearances instead of substance. The naming of a clueless Trophy Simpleton as his running mate.

No matter what he tries, from now until kingdom come, we've already laid the groundwork of truthful frames. And the Houses of Cards, made from Packs of Lies, come crashing down each and every time he opens his mouth now. Or his surrogates do.

We're quick on the draw. With blogs. And videos. Exposing the muck just as fast as he tries to bluff his way through the box he's in.

He's boxed in. Tighter than a tick!

Self-inflicted. His campaign is mortally wounded. He's like a corned animal. Spitting. And thrashing. And scratching. Biting.

But it will not work. Not this time.

I am sure we're going to see Rev. Wright played in a big way and soon. I expect Brokaw to clear a "townhall" question on the subject that will then allow the McCain Campaign to say "see the American public is still interested in Wright as the question from the audience member has shown and thus it is our civic and even patriotic duty to bring him up again".

I also expect to see an ad on Nov 1st- 3rd juxtaposing McCain's POW footage with Rev. Wrights "God Damn America" played over a picture of Obama.

TheraP,,,,,,,, don't forget pissing on himself.

user-pic

Ooooh. Pissing on the self-inflicted wounds. Ugh. Infection setting in.

... his own top adviser admits that McCain and company don't want to talk about [the economy].

Greg Strimple is McSame's top advisor?  I've never heard of him.

Heh.  It'd be interesting to see a time-line of all of McSame's Top Economic Advisors du-jour.  Lessee... Gramm, Carly, uh... who replaced Carly?

Along with Keating Five on the economy, among other things,,,,, the counter to Pastor Wright is the hoopy python and demon chaser from Kenya that anointed Palin,,,,, a few choice clips of that will be a miraculous elixir to combat the Wright smears.

I GURANTEE YOU the Obama camp will not bring out Keating 5. I will put money on that.

Wouldn't it be wise for Obama to go out there and say that McCain is gonna go 100% negative to pre-empt the public on what is about to happen?

Good idea. He's done this effectively in the past. Be good to hang out for his next stump.

Why is everyone acting like they haven't ALREADY BEEN AT THIS FOR 3 MONTHS. Ever since O went overseas they have been trying to torch him negatively a to a certain extent succeeded. Now that people are paying attention McCains attacks (how much worse can you get for saying he is bad for you FAMILY and can we trust hiM!?) have been thrown out the window and they seem years ago. Obama and his camp are ready to respond and they are just starting to ratchet up the funds.

Here's one more thing they won't want to talk about:McCain Rick Davis and the Russians have deep ties.

Despite rampant Russophobia among Republicans, Deripaska turned to powerful GOP figures to solve his problem--especially to Republicans connected with McCain. In 2003 Deripaska hired former presidential candidate Bob Dole, who had nearly picked McCain as his running mate, and Dole's lobbying partner Bruce Jackson (also a McCain aide) to lobby the State Department to overturn the visa ban, according to Glenn Simpson and Mary Jacoby of the Wall Street Journal. Over the next few years Dole's firm, Alston & Bird, was paid more than $500,000 to push for Deripaska's visa.

Deripaska also reached out to a Washington-based intelligence firm, Diligence, chaired by GOP foreign policy hand Richard Burt, McCain's top foreign policy adviser in 2000 and an adviser in '08 (Burt left Diligence in 2007 to join Henry Kissinger's consulting firm). Deripaska's business partner in London, Nathaniel Rothschild, an heir to the English Rothschild fortune, bought a stake in Diligence,
