McCain-Palin Supporter Shouts: "Obama Bin Laden"

The creativity of some of McCain-Palin's supporters continues to dazzle and amaze. Here's the latest -- at a rally yesterday morning, a McCain-Palin supporter shouted out: "Obama Bin Laden."

You can hear it at the 12-second mark, just before Palin launches into her now-familiar (and false) claim that McCain is too modest to discuss his POW service:

It's impossible to know whether Palin heard it. The above vid makes it seem like the person who shouted it was far away from her, but the video posted by this DailyKos diarist suggests otherwise.

Earlier today we heard a McCain-Palin supporter shout "kill him" at a Palin rally. TPM Reader MLC asks a very good question about all this: "Where is the Secret Service in all of this? What obligation does the Palin detail have if they actually hear something at one of her rallies?"

user-pic

THIS IS EXCELLENT NEWS!! FOR MCCAIN!!!

user-pic

Indubitably...

user-pic

I emailed them at the campaign site and told them I'm outraged and I want them to stop this before something happens and if it does, they will end up eternally blamed.

user-pic

So did I. Think we're going to get a response?
;-)

user-pic

Hate mails, perhaps...

(Seriously)

user-pic

And Greg, much as I hate to complain, is this 45 second hang time before a comment posts going to be a permanent feature?

user-pic

Seriously. If it's a choice between the 45 second hangtime and a preview function, I'd be happy to lose the preview function.

user-pic

agreed. There's only so much time at work to waste you know!

user-pic

Exactly!

user-pic

No joke. This site's going to be a nightmare tomorrow night during the debate if this keeps up.

user-pic

That's what I keep thinking -

user-pic

I listened to it a few times, but I don't hear "kill him" in the audio. Does someone have a cleaner recording?

user-pic

I think that was a different one (I don't have sound on this 'puter)

user-pic

The 'kill him' was yelled before Palin spoke.

user-pic

I guess if you get enough pinheads together and get them all riled up this is what you get . . .

user-pic

REALLY hoping The Daily Show lucked into some full-audio footage of this lunacy...

user-pic

Just one problem -- none of this is funny.

user-pic

Co-signed. Sad fact remains, TDS is one of the better ways of getting sidelined news items out to the less-political.

user-pic

Turns out the Daily Show did do the Krazy Krowds segment as its lead story after all. Good for them.

And did you see how they juxtaposed McShame's "new" economic speech with his convention address? Yet another stroke of brilliance that makes you realize just how pathetically lame the mainstream media is.

user-pic

Hey all,

I was trying to figure out how to send this to the editors, but couldn't. I thought they may want to feature these funny Obama vs. McCain commercials. They are at: http://www.votesmarter2008.com

If anybody knows how to get in touch with any of the writers, let me know?

user-pic

Are we maybe giving this more attention than it deserves?

These freeps are hollering this stuff because it riles up the liberals. That is their intent.

user-pic

It may rile up liberals, but it also scares the hell out of moderates/independents.

user-pic

At least they aren't performing book burnings yet. Yet.

user-pic

What? In the context, this one doesn't even mean anything--that guy might as well have yelled "Ted Kaczynski."

My theory is that McCain supporters have figured out they can yell things and get onto YouTube or, if they're provocative enough, the MSM.

user-pic

I think "did McCain/Palin hear it?" was a valid question to ask the first time or two it happened. But now we've got these things turning up at every rally. Would it be that hard to have, you know, an aide standing in the audience or something, where the person who took that video was, and have them do something when these outbursts occur? Or alert McCain/Palin the audience needs to be responded to? Or... do anything at all? We know Palin at least doesn't have a problem responding to the audience if they start yelling anti-war comments.

These crowd calls are happening because the McCain campaign wants them to happen.

user-pic

It would be interesting if it was the same person at every rally....

user-pic

As for the secret service, why do people think this is the SINGLE government agency not to be gutted by Bush/Cheney and restaffed at critical points with kiss-ass bootlickers?

My guess would be for people so close to Bush/Cheney, the secret service was one of the very first organizations to be reshuffled.

user-pic

Because their lives depended on them and they know that other people's lives depend on them.

I'm sorry but until someone shows me proof that somehow the Secret Service has become incompetent or partisan, I'm not going to believe it because my reason tells me that it's not very damn likely.

user-pic

Especially since if something happened, the USSS would have some explaining to do. I agree, I can't believe that politics would hold sway there.

user-pic

The Secret Service has a whole threat assessment protocol and I am sure they are treating these ad hoc threats just the way they usually do, but they don't tend to advertise how they do things.

I took a class in forensic psychiatry and the professor arranged for a secret service officer to talk with us. He was part of the presidential threatener detail, which is different from the guys who provide physical protection (though I am sure that they talk to each other).

Basically, threats are prioritized by seriousness, credibility, opportunity, prior bad acts, and a host of other factors.

I like to think that for most people, even being talked to by a Secret Service agent about your propensity for carrying out a threat would be sufficient not to make an overt threat again.

It's all pretty scary, though, and I really wish McCain and his team would stop it.

user-pic

So as corrupt and venal as Bush/Cheney has proven themselves to be, you seem to believe that the secret service is able and willing to protect Obama because... Bush/Cheney trust their lives to them?

I don't get it. Whats the connection there? If the SS has been corrupted/biased but still adequately protects Bush/Cheney, why does that mean the same quality of protection would extend to B/C's enemies -- like Obama? They could easily put the 2nd stringers in there or... simply not pursue clear threats made in public venues against Obama. Recall any of them recently? Recall the guys picked up in Denver with guns, maps and a witness who said they were headed out to kill Obama but seemed to slip thru the SS's fingers? The effect of not pursuing threats is to embolden and encourage those nutcases out there. Just like what is going on in the McCain/Palin rallys.

Strange that folks think the SS is somehow above it all.

user-pic

If Bush and Cheney were to tamper with the Secret Service and install cronies, they might be jeopardizing their own safety. One can say many things about Bush and Cheney, but reckless with their own safety they are not.

So it would be in sheer self-interests to keep the Secret Service functioning well.

user-pic

My understanding is that the gentlemen picked up in Denver did not "slip" through the USSS hands...it was the US prosecutor who declined to prosecute.

I don't know for sure, but my guess is that agents of the USSS are considered civil servants...as such, I don't think the whole department could easily be staffed or replaced with "kiss-ass bootlickers". In order for your conspiracy to be valid, it would mean the entire department would be in on it. Don't you think something would have leaked out by now? Do you have any evidence whatsoever to back up your accusations? Do you truly believe that not a single person in the entire USSS has a conscious?

user-pic

Dammit....must...use...."preview".....

That should be "conscience"

user-pic

Hey SchrodingersCat, thanks for misquoting and misinterpreting almost everything I said. For one, what part of 'restaffed at critical points' did you not understand to come up with your 'Do you truly believe that not a single person in the entire USSS has a conscious?' comment?

This is obviously beating a dead horse here. Glad to see some people believe in the tooth fairy still. Civil servants... yeah, that really makes 'em immune to corruption.

user-pic

Hey, Confound Them All, thanks for supplying all of that evidence that backs up your theory.

user-pic

And what's the point of logging in if you have to retype your name etc everytime you leave a comment?

user-pic

There seem to be quite a few kinks that need to be worked out- I hope the problems are temporary.

user-pic

Everything seems to be constipated, at this point. Maybe it's a test.

user-pic

Can anyone tell me why, exactly, McCain is pursuing this? All the polls indicate that the more hateful things get spouted at rallies, the fewer people are supporting McCain. Even Fox News polls say that William Ayers doesn't matter to 70% of their viewers, for Chrissakes. Can someone explain to me how this isn't just McCain flailing and is actually a strategy?

user-pic

why aren't these fuckers thrown out?

user-pic

That's what they should do - escort those people out of the rally tout suite.

user-pic

It's like throwing a beer bottle onto a hockey rink. You did it. Now you have 2 burly guys at either arm showing you the way..

user-pic

Remember they threw out protesters from the RNC immediately during the McScum speech? Clearly, they are highly selective about what sorta nuts they throw out.

user-pic

The only thing I can think along conspiratorial lines might be happening is that the Secret Service knows something we don't know - like these people are hired by the campaign.

I still think someone needs to step up if that's the case -

user-pic

The Secret Service doesn't change with administrations - those guys like their jobs and they hold them from president to president.

user-pic

Shouts of "KILL HIM" to comparing Barack Obama to perhaps the biggest terrorist of our lifetime (Bin Laden), this is unbelievable. I can't ever remember this happening before in a U.S. election, where one side actually wanted to "KILL" the other side. Sure we might have different views on ideology, but aren't we all Americans??? It's just a telling reminder that even though we've made great strides in racial relations in this country, we still have a long way to go.

user-pic

Is it just me?

I like seeing these swine being shown as swine. Let them spout off their bullshit. It just shows moderates what kind of people love McCain and Palin.

user-pic

No, it isn't just you - I like seeing these people exposed for what they are, too - really it should scare most people.

It's just that I want the media clear that this is not acceptable campaign behavior - because it's not.

user-pic

Greg:

Is this a new policy of TPM to discourage bloggers from commenting? The "update" design is horrible.

Please fix.

user-pic

What!?! You don't like waiting for five minutes while the page reloads?

You young whippersnappers! No patience!

user-pic

If there is a ray of sunshine in the McCain Palin ticket it's the fact that Sarahs political career, if it "can be called that", is finished.

She has been brought out into the light, and the light liketh not.

user-pic

Word straight up!

user-pic

McCain has ratcheted up the expectations about the debate to an absurd level with those people.
They are expecting something very WWF. I don't know if McCain can give it to them, even with Schieffer's assistance.
I'll be here. I'm way to timid to look at the actual debate.

user-pic
On the presidential level, the Gallup national tracking polls have shown Sen. Barack Obama with 50, 51 or 52 percent in every three-day moving average since Oct. 4, with Sen. John McCain between 41 percent and 43 percent in every average over that same period. No presidential contender in modern times has successfully closed this wide a gap in this short a time.

For GOP, a grim November looms

user-pic

I said earlier today - this is the widest margin I've seen in 3 elections.

user-pic

There is really no polite way to say this, so I'll just spit it out:

This is what 'those people' do when they attend WWF extravaganzas, NFL football and NBA basketball games, and so on. As a former police officer and one who spent a lot of time working with the US Secret Service on protective detail assignments, I can tell you that it's not usually the 'noisy ones' you worry too much about.

On the other hand, the long honored and effective way to control an unruly crowd is to remove the generally self-appointed head of the mob, decapitating the leadership—so to speak—and shocking its participants back into reality.

In this case, a delay in allowing the 'stars' to appear or even the cancellation of the event due to such hooliganism, is likely the better approach. As justice is only effective if it is swift and sure, so is the attempt to control the 'fan base' of political figures. An event delay or cancellation, coupled with a clear announcement of the reason and an easy, unobstructed exit path, would go a long way to diminishing the bad behavior at future events.

user-pic
, I can tell you that it's not usually the 'noisy ones' you worry too much about.

I was just wondering about that a little while ago. It dawned on me that at least when they shout out you know who and where they are.

user-pic

Please tell me the MSM calls them out already...

user-pic

They have been - and it started with conservative writers and then more joined in.

It's certainly had very little effect on this campaign - at least the Palin part of this campaign. Goddam I'll be glad to see the last of Klondike Barbie. She's more of Klaus Barbie, as it turns out.

user-pic

Thanks Tena. As for its impact on the election dynamics, I'm not too exceedingly concerned actually. But I'm VERY concerned what this incited hatred might lead to. I fear the worst, honestly -- and even if we avoid the tragedy we worry about, this can do our political dialogue huge damage (that's why I want to see McScum completely destroyed on the election day, to show the fascism they run their campaign on will never be rewarded).

user-pic

I have to admit that every time I see a picture of Sarah "Kill 'Em" Palin I feel an overwhelming urge to fling a moose pie at her stupid face.

user-pic

Can anybody contact the Secret Service to find out if they are looking into this?

user-pic

Obama is playing a victim card. He is saving the racism card for November.
