Big Union Robocall Hammers McCain For "Getting Rid Of The Rules For The Fatcats On Wall Street"

Looks like Obama's big labor backers are entering the robocall game, too, as a way of keeping up the economic assault on John McCain in the swing states.

Working America, an arm of the AFL-CIO, is out with a new robo in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan that slams McCain as a "disaster for the middle class" who has gone out of his way to "get rid of the rules for the fatcats on Wall Street."

Here's audio:

Script:

Hi, this is Sue with an important message from Working America about the current economic crisis. You should have just received a piece of mail from us, explaining how Republican Sen. John McCain's economic policies have been a disaster for the middle class. John McCain has gotten us into this economic crisis. He supported sending our jobs overseas, and he supported getting rid of the rules for the fatcats on Wall Street. In the meantime, he has done nothing to help struggling families on Main Street. Now he wants to continue the same falied policies. Working families can't afford four more years of this. Please join me in voting against John McCain on Nov. 4. Thank you for your time.

An AFL-CIO official confirmed the call is genuine. (Via the National Political Do Not Call Registry)

Late Update: Working America executive director Karen Nussbaum says there are roughly half a million calls going out primarily to households in those four states. She says the calls are only going to Working America members, who signed up with the group to "get information about economic issues."

That these recipients of the calls are Working America members, of course, doesn't change the fact that these are potentially undecided swing voters who are getting automated calls, just as the recipients of McCain's calls are. But Nussbaum rejects the idea that these are in any way comparable to McCain's robocalls, which she blasted as "attack robocalls" filled with "innuendo."

"Please join me in voting against John McCain"???

How about "Please join me in voting for Barack Obama - a president who will help Main Street instead of Wall Street."

It's not as if this is so negative they're afraid to attach his name to it - or are they?

user-pic

That might be right. They don't connect Obama to it in any way.

user-pic

O is on roll with robos. Soon there will be 5:1.

user-pic

Here's your medicine, Senator McCain.

Take it and like it.

user-pic

Who sits through robocalls? I mean I couldn't get five seconds into that audio capture and I knew what it was going in.

I think Obama is better off staying out of robocalls, folks get pissed off, it's like an intrusion and a nuisance.

I wonder if there is data to show how many are hung up on vs how many are listened to all the way through.

The best robocall would be a voice saying "Vote Obama!" and then hanging up.

user-pic

Agree. I'm not a fan of the robocall from anyone, pro or anti Obama.

user-pic

Me too - I wouldn't answer them. Who doesn't have caller ID now? Our "home #" is actually a fax.

You know they're coming - There's a clicking noise in the background, a short silence - by that time I would hang up. But we're not getting them as we are in a very blue state.

At the end of the original post states 'from the national political do not call registry' which seems to be some private organization allegedly dedicated to eliminated the phone abuse voters are suffering from robocalls and other political campaign calls. This brings up a question. Are political calls governed by the do not call registry that the federal government maintains, or are they an exception?

Robo calls and all political calls are EXEMPT from any federal and most state laws.

Political calls are not governed by the "Do Not Call" registry. I actually asked about this during the primary. I think it has something to do with wanting voters "to be fully informed". I get more info from Jon Stewart, TPM, and factcheck.org.

user-pic

All I can say is that I'm glad I don't live in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia or Indiana - I assume those are the states getting hit the hardest.

user-pic

Lots of McCain robo-calls here in Virginia.

user-pic

I can also only assume that robocalls have some percentage of success or they wouldn't do it.

user-pic

FWIW on the labor front, the fire fighters union has a :30 TV spot bashing McShame's health care plan: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KlHrS9o2vS4

user-pic

I think that if I lived in any of these battleground states (and sadly, none of the five states that I've lived in have been battleground states...sniff) I'd just shut off the ringer on my phone.

I imagine that these calls work as primes. They activate the "Obama is a terrorist" schema, or the "McCain is a disaster for the economy" schema. That's probably where the effectiveness, if any, lies.

user-pic

Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on who you are) robo calls have a "perfect record for never having worked" (Green and Gerber, Yale).

McCain's remarks regarding the Biden foot-in-mouth:

Republican John McCain told voters in this key electoral state Tuesday he was personally tested by the same kind of crisis that Democratic vice presidential nominee Joseph Biden warned Barack Obama will almost certainly face if elected president.

McCain recalled being ready to launch a bombing run during the October 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis, which Biden said over the weekend tested a new President John F. Kennedy and was the template for the kind of "generated crisis" the 47-year-old Obama would face within six months of taking office.

"I was on board the USS Enterprise," McCain, a former naval aviator, said in the capital city of Harrisburg. "I sat in the cockpit, on the flight deck of the USS Enterprise, off of Cuba. I had a target. My friends, you know how close we came to a nuclear war."

As the crowd of several thousand began to swell with cheers and applause, he added with dramatic effect: "America will not have a president who needs to be tested. I've been tested, my friends."

No, don't re-read it, you've read it right the first time. It doesn't make any sense. McCain is claiming to be tested in decision-making by sitting in a fighter plane waiting for orders.

Of course if you want to talk about the Cuban Missile Crisis and Judgment, one might want to consider this -

I was at a luncheon hosted by the Truman National Security Project today. I’ll write more on the policy discussion in a bit, but I thought I’d relate an anecdote that noted author/journalist Joe Klein shared.

Klein says that he was talking with McCain several years ago about the Cuban missile crisis. As the crisis rumbled on, the Soviets sent two messages to the Kennedy brothers - a bellicose one sent through official diplomatic channels, and an offer of cooperation sent via backchannel.

Kennedy chose to respond to the diplomatic opening, which lead to the crisis’ eventual resolution.

Klein claims that he said to McCain, “you probably would have responded to the bellicose message.”

McCain apparently responded, “I probably would have.”

Who says judgment isn’t important?

IF you want to talk about McLame and judgment, all you need to know is the story of the USS Forrestall.

That's all you need to know. The little shit ran the other way. Every other fucking person on that ship who was not already in the fire ran toward the fire to try to save as many people and planes as they could and McLame ran the other way.

He ran right off the ship without permission and to a villa belonging to a NYT exec. for unscheduled R&R - while his shipmates dealt with the worst disaster since I believe WWII - could be wrong about that, but I think that's what I read -

user-pic

"My friends, when crisis struck the Forrestal, I did not hesitate, I did not blink. I picked myself up ran, not walked, to the nearest bar. My friends, that's leadership you and Joe Sixpack can get behind."

user-pic

The LA Times had a Forrestal story a couple of weeks ago, but it didn't get picked up here or at Huffington:

http://www.latimes.com/news/politics/la-na-aviator6-2008oct06,0,7633315.story

What I really want is the NY Times follow up to the McCain gambling story they did a few Sunday's ago on the front page - He never paid taxes and according to something I read on Huffington he should have reported both his losses and his wins. I think he did not report because his friends at the casino did not bother to send him this form called "W2G". This requires follow up by them and I let NYT know I want a follow-up for my monthly subscription.

Guys,
TPM missed one important thing in the today's PEW poll: battleground states.
Obama leads 52% to 37%, i.e. by 15% in the battleground states, one point better than the margin in its national poll. Notably, Bush won 10 of these 15 states in 2004, by margins ranging from less than 1% (Iowa and New Mexico) to 21% (Indiana).

On Oct. 9-12 On Oct. 16-19

Republican States---41(O)--51(M)----42(O)--49(M)
Democratic States---61(O)--29(M)----61(O)--30(M)
Battlegrounds-------48 (O)-41(M)----52(O)--37(M)

Battleground: CO, IN, FL, IA, MI, MN, MO, NV, NH, NM, NC, OH, PA, VA, WI.

Right on. McCain was a junior officer following military orders during the 1962 crisis. We should salute his military service. But there are serious and legitimate questions about his erratic judgment in matters such as blindly supporting the failed policies of George W. Bush and selecting a grossly unqualified running mate.

Per above, here is the link to the Forrestal story from the LA Times:
