Joe The Plumber Doesn't Believe Obama Will Raise His Taxes
McCain just unleashed a broad attack on Obama that the McCain campaign clearly labored greatly over in advance: Joe The Plumber, someone Obama encountered on the trail recently, doesn't want Obama to hike his taxes and spread it around with his redistributionist agenda, because this would sap Joe The Plumber's ability to buy a small business.
Obama countered by pointing out that McCain's lying: Obama's plan won't hike taxes on anyone making less than $250,000 a year.
It's worth pointing out that the McCain campaign has been trying to convince the Joe-The-Plumbers of the world for months and months that Obama wants to raise their taxes.
Now, I don't know what the Joe The Plumber McCain is referring to thinks. But more broadly, the Joe-The-Plumbers of the world aren't buying: Yesterday's New York Times poll found that more respondents think McCain will hike their taxes than Obama will.
Maybe if McCain repeats the words "Joe The Plumber" enough times, this will change, but I doubt it.

Here it comes...

Huffington Post has a more detailed description of the exchange between Obama and Joe the Plumber.
Joe still isn't convinced that Obama won't tax him more and it sounds to me like that's because Joe doesn't completely understand business accounting.
Joe acts like he's going to be personally taxed if the business grosses more than $250k a year rather than if that's income after expenses.
I don't know how big this plumbing company is that Joe wants to buy but it should be pretty easy to figure out what their income was last year and if he's going to have to pay more because of Obama's tax policy.
McCain obfuscated on individual income taxes and corporate income taxes as he's done all along. Scare the little guy by threatening his dream and prey on his ignorance.
Since the average plumber makes $45k a year and Joe is worried he's going to be taxed because he might make more than $250k a year, I'd advise Joe to consider talking to an accountant and tax lawyer about the differences between being a sole proprietor and incorporating.

Hey McCain, thanks for embarrassing joe nationally - once the BOTTOM LINE is explained to Joe, you know he will go with Obama's plan and benefit more from Obama's policies. It is ridiculous to think his tax burden is $250k the moment he buys the business. Maybe McCain doesn't understand how taxes work?
October 16, 2008 12:17 AM | Reply | Permalink
From what Joe the Plumber said to Katie Couric by audio, he's a McCain guy, and he wanted to stump Obama and get him to admit he'd raise his taxes. Couric asks if he's going to make over $250K cause that's when Obama would raise his taxes and Joe admits that's not the case. Further, Joe basically says, "but the point is that if it's $250K now, it could be $100K sometime and then I would get hit," which is why McCain was so steady in the debate, he said, and Obama not very specific, he said, and then said Obama tap danced like Sammy Davis Jr. (couldn't come up with Gregory Hines, even?). So his entire premise to Obama in the street was a set up. I don't think Joe the Plumber is buying any business any time soon.

Obama's response to the Plumber Joe attack was weak, off the mark, and robotic--the low point of his performance. An alert debater could have built on any of these points: Hats off to Joe the entrepreneur. When your before-tax income goes up, so do your taxes and so does your after-tax income; you are better off and so is the country. If you have a business, your taxes are on net, not total, income. Obama's expected tax rates for 2010 were set by the Republicans who drafted the Bush temporary tax cuts. Barack recognizes that those cuts have fueled inflation and bled the treasury, as McCain himself predicted. It's a shame that McCain has reversed himself and now embraces the disastrous free-lunch economics that are biting all of us, not just Joe, and threaten to devour our children.

Joe the Plumber was a set up. What did he do? Call the McCain campaign and say, "Hey, I just talked to Obama and yada yada . . .?" And they said, "Hey, we'll work out a strategy around Joe the Plumber on taxes and health care. It'll be great."
Wanted: Actor to play Joe the Plumber. Must meet and greet with "that one". Contact McCain Campaign.

We do not want to belittle Joe, but, he STILL does not understand Barack's plan??
The here-and-now truth could not be simpler: Under Obama he gets a tax BREAK. Under McCain he does NOT. Rich people and corporations do.
If Joe is fortunate enough to move into the $250k tax bracket, then GOOD for him. That is a fair graduate tax rate that benefits everyone.
