Here's That Nasty Attack Ad Suggesting Obama Doesn't Care If Babies Die
This morning, we reported that an independent group was running ads in Wisconsin attacking Obama for supposedly letting babies die by hitting him for opposing an Illinois measure that purported to protect the lives of babies who had survived an abortion.
Now Mark Halperin has obtained a copy of the ad, which is the work of some group called the Committee for Truth in Politics, and it's a nasty piece of work that actually features a cooing baby:
In the next month, we're going to see an assault on Obama's character, patriotism, and fitness to be president that is unprecedented in American politics.

I realize that nasty attack ads are all McCain has left, but I am not sure they are going to work. McCain's reputation as a truth teller is in shambles. The reputations of his 527 surrogates are even worse.
If he wants to win this election McCain has to tell us what he is going to do for middle class Americans.

In my blog post http://tpmcafe.talkingpointsmemo.com/talk/2008/10/mccain-camps-psychological-mis.php
Bad grammar and all I tried to explain how I feel that this attempt to define Obama's character won't work as people have already made a character judgement about him be it positive or negative. The most vulnerable spot for Obama is if McCain somehow manages to convince people that Obama won't deliver what he has promised as many people are voting for him not because of cultural affinity but because of self interest.

*sigh* In my ideal world, the Obama response ad would start out with a still of the 527 ad:
"I'm Barack Obama, and I approve of eating babies"
Obama, in kitsch apron over his suit, in kitchen, stirring a frying pan with wooden spoon. Turns towards camera. While taking off his apron:
"The legislation I voted against did nothing to protect infants, which was not already written into law. It was political posturing designed to attack the fundamentals of Roe Vs. Wade. And by that I mean a womens right of choice, not the American worker."
Walking forward, camera matching pace going backwards, a grinning framed portrait of McCain on the counter comes into shot, which Obama picks up.
"This is not a laughing matter, and what I don't find funny is the way my honorable opponent says nothing against these impeachments upon my character, which he knows to be false, while claiming to you that he upholds a standard 100% absolute truth."
Putting the frame down on the counter facing away from the camera
"He just looks the other way, when he knows he could stop this conversation with a few words simply admitting that we have no disagreement when it comes to the medical care of infants. America needs leadership which will not be distracted, nor allow distraction, when there are so many important issues affecting America today which we do legitimately disagree upon."
And that, my friends, is why I'll never be asked to work for a political campaign.

OK, here is a thought. As discussed on TPM recently, McCain has already taken a massive hit on his reputation with his antics since August. This is unlike Dole who waged an unremarkable but not terribly negative campaign against Bill Clinton in 1996.
OK, here is the thing: if McCain goes scorched earth and doesn't call off the dogs (like these bastards) in the weeks to come, he won't markedly change the outcome of the election (Obama seems to have grown a nice teflon layer) but he does risk taken what little of his reputation is left and burning and burying that.
IF some old souls of the republican party, or some pundits with street cred on the repub side (eg David Gergen) could start spreading the meme that McCain can end the race with grace and dignity rather than with the stench of nasty, negative campaigning, maybe we can get through to him to rein in the dogs.
There is no guarantee that McCain has it in him, but do you think it is worth a shot?

McCain is betting the house(s) that he can take Obama down and win the Presidency. It doesn't matter what it takes to win AS LONG AS HE WINS!

He doesn't have to admit it to go gracefully. He just has to send the 527s and his own campaign the message that he is closing down the negative ad shop. Now that will lead to some reporting, but he could easily cover for it. I think he could do this (bow out gracefully with honor) but it is probably true that he is unlikely to do so.

It's things like this that make me dig deeper into my pocketbook to give some more money to the campaign.
Today I heard the whispers of hey... do you think Obama could win West Virginia? And I think if we keep reaching out for every vote in 'every' state that we can we might just turn up some unexpected victories. And the more votes we get the more united the country will be... so it helps in the long run as much as the short run.
And I think this is good practice for what it will take to keep the change happening once Senator Obama and our new congress are elected.
October 3, 2008 7:39 PM | Reply | Permalink
McCain cannot possibly win with a positive feelgood focus on the economy. Not gonna happen.
So he has no choice but to go hard and negative on Barack's positions and associations. The odds are that won't work either but there is a theoretical chance of winning that way as the GOP did in 1988 and 2004.
Given a 0% chance of winning positive and a 25% chance of winning negative, the latter must be picked. Any football team would rather win ugly than lose pretty.
By the way, I think McCain's tactics and strategy have been pathetic the last 2 weeks.

At this point, McCain has zero chance of winning, regardless of whether he goes positive or even more negative. The only question is whether he chooses to go out in the most ignominious fashion possible, or whether he tries to claw back some small shred of his faux integrity before its over.

I just found out from watching Rachel Maddow that that goddamn Mencken quote that cynics have thrown at me for years has been misquoted every damn time
Mencken did not say that no one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American people.
Mencken said that no one ever went broke underestimating the taste of the American people - well shit, I agree with that. Hell most American's taste is all in their mouths - but that has nothing to do with intelligence.

Yes - and that covers fanatics on both ends of the spectrum.
This is my problem with the hard left - for me, it's not a line, but a circle that meets at both extremes. A dictatorship is a dictatorship is a dictatorship - right, left, middle, up, down, whatever -
It's all about the doctrine and nothing about reality that includes busines and it's necessary to keep us afloat -

Obama has become more and more comfortable attacking the attack ads. It is not in his nature to show his outrage, and he has learned how to show what he feels in a way that resonates with the voter.

Typical, tired regurgitated conservative attack ad with no gusto nor substance. The ad is a wash!!!

I love this - Jonathan Turley was just showing the constitution a lot of love and he said: it's idiot-proof; we've proven that.
That cracked my shit right up

Palin is truly scary. Especially knowing that the Bush neocons have gotten hold of her. Pat Buchanan, bless his soul, brought up the point that in Palin they found their pointwoman. Scary shit.

Yes - I just found out she's been hanging with serious neo-cons for at least 3 years.
She is dangerous.

There is a certain perverse pleasure watching conservative pundits trying to defend Palin and McCain (in this case Larry King). Meanwhile, those on the side of good can sit back and cite facts and smirk while the the PalinMcCain people bluster and gnash their teeth. You can hear it in their voice they see their ship sinking.

Republicants are all about getting the pre-born soldiers through birthing so they can be a drain on their parents' wealth then be killed later in the name of their god and country.
By accusing Obama of hating the infants, are they claiming him as a Republican?

Mama mia!~
I actually did hear Italians in Italy say that. But I found out that they only use ciao very informally so it wasn't something I heard a lot. It was so cool - I ran into a trattoria I'd eaten in twice in Mestre (we didn't really eat well for a trip to Italy) on my way to the bus to grab a water and the guy who ran it said: "Ciao, senora!"
One of my lovely moments in a generally lovely trip that almost killed me - I've never been so tired or so sick when I got home.
LOL

Yeah, the food in and around that area of Italy leaves much to be desired. I prefer Rome, Naples and Sardenia (for the seafood). Much better and flavorful. Venice and the surrounding area is way too bland and overpriced.

McCain's campaign is starting to resemble a movie:
Apocalypse Now
It's becoming quite obvious to the most casual observer that McCain, like Col. Kurtz, has gone AWOL from reality and many believe him to be at the border between sanity and senility.

Anyone who hasn't yet read the new cover story on McCain in RollingStone: it is available online.
It is a shock to read, is far more devastating than Amy Silverman's article in the Phoenix New Times back in early August.
A MUST READ! E-mail it to every conservative jerk you know. Fits hand in glove with Silverman's piece.
The guy is worse, far worse than W; a craven shithead with an obsession of becoming president.

As David Gergen and others know, the true disaster McCain et alia are making is the death of a viable opposition party in American politics.
It is now a question of what comes out of the ashes of the Republican, ie Dixiecrat, party now in power,,,,,, will it be a nasty Dixiecrat consolidation or the rebirth of the Republican party of Rockefeller, Everett McKinley Dirkson, Lincoln, TR and the olde New England intellectuals?

Indeed, as the NYT reports today, McCain will now be devoting his campaign to revealing that underneath the veneer of maverick, he's really a disgusting ayatollah of smear and hate after all.

does anyone here wonder if he realizes that he is The Broad's tutor? he's become a presidential Sylvan learning center. republicans are a lot of things. most of all they are patient as money often allows wealthy and powerful people to be. they are already running a game eight years out (though i'm sure they hope its only four). McCain is being used to knock the rough edges off The Broad. that's why she feels free to contradict him. it allows room for her distance herself from the stench of the dying carcass that is his political career. this stopped being about McCain - if it ever was - the moment he caved to Karl and chose The Broad.

You put a link on the page that I wastefully clicked on to go see The Committee For Truth in Politics video(ad) and it took me to another page that did NOT have the video and so I came back to this page. If you want to put them down and show they are wrong then show some Truth in getting the video where you Said it would be. Do you think with one good arma and one sore arm I have the time and strength to keep clicking for Nothing!! How credible can u appear in my eyes when you get me clicking for nothing. I am really tired now and I Don't need to click for nothing! I've been wanting to see the video for awhile now and was waiting for someone to put it up. Please, in Reality put the Video up where you Said it would be. Then all can see it and come to there own Opinion!
