Have Palin's Abysmal Interviews Raised Bar For Her Tonight?

We keep hearing that Sarah Palin's public implosions on CBS and elsewhere have lowered "expectations" for her, to the point where all she needs to do in order to get solid grades is avoid vomiting on the podium or collapsing on the stage in a fit of hysterical laughter.

But is this really true? Will the public really rate her against past interview performances, or will they rate her against what they expect in a Vice President?

It may be that Palin's catastrophic public performances have actually raised the bar for her, in the sense that this is her last chance to turn around the perception of her as hopelessly incompetent -- way too incompetent to be the second in command behind a 72-year-old commander in chief.

Just look at the numbers. The recent Pew poll finds that a majority of 51% say she's unqualified to become president, while 63% say Joe Biden is qualified. And the recent Washington Post poll finds that only 35% say Palin has what it takes to serve effectively as president, while twice as many (70%) say that about Biden.

She needs to reverse those perceptions. And those perceptions were created by her recent spate of disastrous interviews.

The notion that Palin will be judged merely against her previous performances is something of a Beltway confection. Do voters really think this way? Isn't it possible that voters will judge her performance tonight based solely on whether she appears qualified for the job she's asking them to grant her?

Here's your cake, Tena - and other birthday people to:

O my god, it's beautiful and the only I have, too, so that's almost wicked of you.

LOL! not really - but man that looks good!

user-pic

Wasn't sure where I'd find you. So left it on the last 2 threads as well.

Scrumptious! And calorie-free!

user-pic

Alright - now you're talking, Greg. Happy Birthday to me for this post.

Happy Birthday, Tena!!!

Agree with your analysis. I think she has come across as such a nitwit in those interviews that she needs to prove that she REALLY has a fundamental understanding about the issues facing this country.

I know she's got a reputation for sweeping generalities during her previous debates....I just don't think that's going to be good enough this time. Things are way too screwed up in this country right now for people to be swayed by some cutesy, hometown girl schtick.

No kidding! That idea only works IF you back it up with knowledge and capability.

I personally would be so damned embarrassed if she represented me to the world.

These past 7 years have been embarassing enough.

Happy Birthday Tena. Look at this. I don't have a TV so I just caught this. From the National Review

Palin on Cheney: Beyond Parody

In tonight's installment, Katie Couric asks Sarah Palin to name the best and worst things Dick Cheney has done. Even after all the rest, this... beggars belief:

PALIN: Worst thing I guess that would have been the duck hunting accident--where you know, that was an accident. And I think that was made into a caricature of him. And that was kind of unfortunate.

The best thing? "[H]e's shown support, along with George W. Bush, of our troops."

Words fail.

--Michael Crowley

user-pic

Errr... he wasn't duck hunting, dear.

I thought you were supposed to be the great outdoorswoman and you can't tell a duck from a quail?

Your family needs you, Sarah.

Or tell "hunting" from "shooting birds in a cage"?

Shooting quails with their wings clipped. Yeah that is hunting.

user-pic

Thank you - and words do fail me -

she is really dumb.

That "magic screen" CNN uses is kick ass. I want one!

Me, too.

But how close are we to the Minority Report?

Palin is not coming into this riding high. I think she NEEDS a decent debate to regain even her base. If she lays an egg out there, this just catapults them further down and basically closes the door on their chances.

user-pic

At this point she's like the kid that is going to fail second grade. And that is a really, really bad place for a politician - or a second grader - to be in.

David Brooks on the NewsHour was definitely expressing concern on the part of repubs. Put his hands in front of his face, as if they'll be afraid to look at the tv screen. (disinformation? who knows?) But Mark Shields believes that if Palin does not do well, it's going to sink mcShame. (but as someone said earlier today "that train wreck has left the station)

thanks Greg for this analysis! About time someone said it. The McCain camp has been spinning all day that she does not need to know everything and at the same time saying she will do great and that people are going to fall in love with her because she will be confident. But if she comes out in full on snark mode I think this will play rather badly no? That works when people don't already think you are a dimwit and a national laughing stock. She has to be serious and engaged and do more than emote a cloud of words.

Palin's past performances have all been prerecorded. Of course there will always be editing to make the interview look engaging. However, with a real-time live debate its' WYSIWYG. No second chances. No time-outs. No life-lines. Its' time to sink or swim and no rubber duckies, water wings, or life preservers allowed!

user-pic

[gasp] o my god you're right - I never thought of that.

Ha ha!

Having a good chuck of the audience tuning in to find out whether your candidate really is dumb as rocks is never a good thing.

user-pic

With popcorn! It's like the circus!

Look, daddy, that clown is being silly!

I haz popcorn!!

Even if the audience doesnt tune in, if she makes even one mistake it will be played over and over all weekend and it will be fodder for the cable news networks for the next 2-3 days. And lets not forget YOU TUBE!

It really isn't...

It's an interesting thought when you stand back and look at it. VP's are never supposed to be polarizing figures, but mere supporting figures. Palin is a make or break character, a real game changer. I feel the type of change she has brought, is the same kind of change mccain/palin would bring. A kick while America is down.

I guess it's like a circus if you have a phobia of clowns.

My favorite part of this past week has been the hyperbolic statements of what Palin has to avoid doing in order to walk away with a win.

CNN's pundit, Mr. Tubin, is just killing Sarah Palin. This guy is flat out dissing her and Gloria Borger is spinning hard for McCain.

user-pic

Those poor saps who accepted the money to spin are really stuck now!

If anything, Palin has shown which pundits will stand up for intellectual integrity.

Came across this vid of Toobin discussing at a conference what a McCain supreme court would be like. Scary shit.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6PS0BvkoVvA

user-pic

absolutely right on, Greg.

This might be another night when the post debate pundint spin is off; she could still beat expectations AND lose the debate

user-pic

Does Gwen Ifill remind anyone else of Barbara Jordan at all? She does me a bit.

Maybe y'all are too young for Barbara Jordan - it may be the voice, actually.

Tena, Gwen is a good journalist. She was rumored to take over MTP when Russert died. She is gong to nail both Biden and Palin tonight with tough questions and with follow ups. Thats what has the right scared. She is tougher than Jim Leaher.

user-pic

Fine with me.

Barbara Jordan was an African American politician. She was a key advisor to LBJ and a totally brilliant woman.

I totally remembered Barbara Jordan. She rocked.

What's up with the Palin bandage on her hand drama?

This campaign in full of drama. I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but also I know what GOP is capable of. I smell something fishy. I hope we have technology in the room to intercept radio signals.

May be it's for real or may be they wanted to gain some sympathy. But it makes me question. How convinient it is to break your arm a day before the debate.

user-pic

Ooo = they are talking domestic policy tonight in addition to foreign policy.

O dear. O deary dear dear. Ain't that a bitch -

LOL

I'm waiting for Palin to say that universl health care is something we should strive for.

The MSM will give her fulsome, fawning breathless praise if she succeeds in insulting Biden or Obama and does so in a complete, coherent sentence at some point in the debate.

The voters, however, will not. If she doesn't prove that she's not a blithering nitwit, McCain takes a hit.

The morons in the MSM seem to think they're judges on a fucking gameshow, scoring for points. Actually, its worse than that. They think they're figure skating judges who can toss in secret bonus points based upon how well they've seen the performers do a move in the past or simply based upon partisanship or prejudice or some slimy secret deal.

This year, however, it looks like the undecideds and persuadables are, for once, dealing with these debates as if they were job interviews. Hence the disconnect between the MSM and the public's view of who won.

Let's fucking do this!

As the slide show you posted today

Biden: LET'S DO THIS

http://www.236.com/news/2008/10/01/debate_training_biden_learns_w_1_9211.php

user-pic

Here we go - maybe -

Palin can't erase what's already out there.

McCain is going to pin his loss on Plain...

user-pic

No doubt, but he still picked her. All roads lead to McCain in the Membrane

user-pic

What the hell?

It's showtime!

Can I call you Joe?

user-pic

Joe's off to a great start.

Weirdly enough, I'm nervous. I wasn't nervous for the other debate. That is just weird.

On cue, Biden tops out on women during his first answer.

Is Biden reading of cards?

user-pic

I'll betcha!

user-pic

She is the world's biggest goddamn liar -

user-pic

Look at Joe look right at her.

I think Palin may have been trying to play a rope-a-dope in coming into this campaign.

Then again, if she did, it failed because this debate only showed that she knew her talking points. For her, all I heard were talking points and talking pionts. Biden answered question with decisive responses. He also clarified for the Religious right the difference between loving a signigicant other and what that means and a "marriage". I am "married" but I more so committed to my eternal friend and partner. Labels clarifies position and definition but many times labels are superficial and meaningless. I think this point should have been explored more in this debate and I hope it comes up again.

I saw tonight a thought provoking and passionate person in Biden and a superficial sound bite in Palin. I wish I could hear more about positions on issue and not someones "personal" issues or twisted "grapevine" rhetoric. At the start of the vine is the truth but by the end, it is completely different.

Palin personifies the problem with America and Biden demonstrated the possibilities. Palin is consumed with labels and side steps true responsibility of the issues, but what does a Republican stand for anyway. At least, Biden gives you confidence that America will listen. Democrats always seems like they listen and always seems impetent to do any thing for anyone. Republicans ignore but does things for the friends.

Both parties shine on the masses, republicans ignore you and democrats make you feel helpless. This idea has to change to have real change in this country. When democrats win they really need to feel like winners.

My question to everyone is: What if there was only one party in power?

George Washington said, the party system is not democratic.

"She needs to reverse those perceptions. And those perceptions were created by her recent spate of disastrous interviews."

Not really, the perceptions began with the speech at the GOP convention; she simply did not have it then and that has become more apparent since. The Joe Six Pack crap has been long gone; Joe can only buy a can of beer one at a time.
