GOP Senator's Ad: Gay Guys In Village People Garb Support My Opponent

Check out this new ad from Sen. Roger Wicker (R-MS), who is facing a tough challenge from former Gov. Ronnie Musgrove (D). This ad ties Musgrove, who is a pro-life social conservative and economic populist, to the liberal Democratic leadership in Washington -- and apparently to the Village People, too:

"The largest gay-rights group in the country," the man in the cowboy outfit says with a grin.

None of the liberal interest groups named in the ad have donated directly to Musgrove. But the issue for the Wicker campaign is that the DSCC is spending a whole lot of money -- some of it raised from these same groups -- on TV ads promoting Musgrove or attacking Wicker.

"The DSCC is set to spend $5.5 million in advertising on behalf of Ronnie Musgrove for Senate," Wicker spokesman Ryan Annison told Election Central. "They know that if he is elected, he will support their liberal Democrat leadership."

O Noes!

Not teh gay! Everyone knows it's catching!

user-pic

Wait wait wait...you're telling me that members of the feared Village People lobby might be gay?

I am SOOOO freaked out right now!

user-pic

no prob. the church of wasilla can fix that right up.

user-pic

you are really beautiful. just had to say that, sorry.

user-pic

It takes some Village People to raise Republican idiots.

user-pic

Imagine the outrage if Dems ran an ad against Wicker -- or any other GOP senator -- tying him to Larry Craig because, after all, Craig surely supports his reelection. Perhaps with scary black and white footage of airport bathrooms.

user-pic

Wow. Synched up or what?

user-pic

This is great news! I was just about to post this poll myself. :)

user-pic

OT did anyone see the NYT poll that just came out? 53 to 39 probable voters. Holy crap! Has McCain been under 40 in any poll to this point?

user-pic

I do believe Republicans are truly evil. Truly.

user-pic

Lewis Black, red white and screwed, his segment on gay marriage.
[referring to Rick Santorum calling gays a "threat to the american family"] It's prejudice, and it's ignorance, on a level that is staggering at this point in time. But, maybe I'm wrong. Maybe there's a group of gay bandidos. They travel from village to dell. And as night falls, they travel to that cul-de-sac, where only one house stands. And in the window, you see a family, just setting down to their evening meal. And these queers... these queers... don their black hoods, and matching pumps, very tasteful. Sneak up to the house ever so slightly, open the door, and start... FUCKING EACH OTHER IN THE ASS! AND ANOTHER AMERICAN FAMILY... IS DESTROYED!

user-pic

Thanks for a good laugh, greatly appreciated :)

user-pic

Destroyed, no. Put off their dinner, yes... but watching messy *straight* sex between unattractive, perfect strangers is no more pleasant. Yecch!

user-pic

I heard that if you vote for a democrat than the gaywads will get their gay all over you! It's a fact!

user-pic

If the big gay conspiracy/agenda did not exist, the GOP would invent it. Oh, wait...

user-pic

It's funny, but I'm re-reading Gore Vidal's essays on sexuality right now and it's amazing how he predicts, from the mid-sixties up until the late 70s, that the right will transform itself in to the "family values" party and begin to run on those issues alone. Guess that isn't working as well this cycle.

Anyone remember Anita Bryant?

user-pic

Does anyone remember Anita Bjork? She was one hot babe!

user-pic

I was flippinf through the channels when i came across a Canadian tv station. Apparently Canada had their general elections today and from what i have been hearing so far, the Canadian conservatives are expecting to get slaughtered. Something must be in the air.

user-pic

On second look, this ad is actually much much funnier than I first thought it to be. Especially the part where a grown man, a senator no less, actually says "I'm Roger Wicker, and I approved this ad."

There's no way anyone could have made that statement if they had actually seen it!

lol

user-pic

I imagine they held some kind of "make a commercial for your Senator!" at a local high school, and this is the one that came out on top.

user-pic

LOL -- back around '91 my h.s. English class scripted and shot an ad for Pepsi, in the "You've Got The Right One Baby, Uh-HUH" Ray Charles & Cindy Crawford era. Like, to win a Pepsi party at our school or something. And it looked pretty much just like this.

As if actual gay lobbyists would be caught dead in all that pleather...

user-pic

Barack Obama's gay??? Was that Ayers guy his boyfriend, is that the connection they keep talking about?

user-pic

Way to turn off moderate voters there, guy. You stay classy.

user-pic

It's so amazing that they choose to use the word "rights" when talking about LGBT rights. Everything I know about word association makes me think this would be the last word that conservatives would want to use...

Pretend you're conducting two separate surveys:
1. One askes, "Should teenagers be allowed to skateboard on neighborhood sidewalks on Sundays?"
2. And the other asks, "Should teenagers have the RIGHT to skateboard on neighborhood sidewalks on Sundays?"
People are going to answer "yes" to the latter question, far more than they do the former.

It occurs to me while I'm writing this that "gay rights" might just be the most succinct way of saying what they wanted to (brevity is key to a 30 second ad). But then again, "gay lobby" and "gay activists" are just as short...

user-pic

actually, I had the complete opposite reaction from what you predict.

I look at those two options, and answer, to "should they be allowed" as "sure, why not?" versus, "should they have the RIGHT to," with a mental question of my own as to what exactly this RIGHT entails.

Never really thought of it that way, but it seems like in this case, the assertion of the RIGHT is in and of itself more threatening because it makes me wonder what the questioner has in mind by it, whereas the more casual approach might succeed by being less mentally demanding.

I'm sure there have been psychological studies done on this sort of question....I wonder if I'm in the minority or majority on this one....

user-pic

Aren't there more gay Republican Senators than gay Democrat Senators?

user-pic

I saw this ad today on our local TV station while I was on the treadmill at the gym. I thought it was a joke because it was such a poorly executed political ad. But Wicker will likely win -- this is a state that has elected Haley Barbour to be their governor -- twice. Need I say more?

user-pic

Maybe I misunderstood, but wouldn't a cow naturally be opposed to a beef processing plant?

user-pic

That's when the whole thing tipped over into delightful absurdist comedy, for me.....very Monty Python.

"Fechez la vache!"
"La vache?!"
"Oui, la vache!"

user-pic

I don't know what the hell the DSCC is waiting for. I live in Northern Miss. and I've seen three negative Musgrove adds in the last 15 minutes.

user-pic

Forget the homos, what's the deal with the cow?

user-pic

Exactly, really stupid.

user-pic

I believe that only 2 of the Village People were actually openly gay? This would then surely make the other memebers "gay sympathizers" which as we know is one short step from "commie bastard."

user-pic

I just watched this ad, actually, it is too much, kind of in your face confusing. I don't think it is effective at all.

user-pic

It is not as if this ad is meant for the REAL world. We are talking about Mississippians here, people, where the total IQ for the entire state totals about 31. This ad is probably quite effective with those pea-brains. Oh well, we are going to win Georgia and North Carolina, so the citizens of Mississippi can remain in the Dark Ages - if they WANT - it is not as if they are not USED to being left behind. After all, they are the world's dumbest people. That is where they belong - at the bottom of the outhouse (so to speak - he he). If the lame-brain citizens of Mississippi want to join the rest of the world, they are welcome at anytime to do so. But first, they are going to have to prove they have the intelligence required to be considered actual people who matter. If you live in Mississipi, the ball is in your court. You need to go out and convince your neighbors to vote for Musgrove and Obama. If you can do that, THEN we'll talk about letting us rejoin the human race. If not, oh well. Duh. Just sit there on your stump and wait for the next hurricane. It has your name on it.

user-pic

The GOP is the last haven for bigots, racists and the ignorant. A No Evolution Zone- just keeping it real dumb. The world is flat and you can't make me believe elsewise.

user-pic

Judging the whole state of Mississippi by one or a few seems to me to be the exact same type of intolerance that we claim to oppose.

user-pic

Only for approximate values of exact.  Can you tell a Mississippian by looking at him/her?

user-pic

The add is just poorly made. It gets lost in it's hatred for liberal groups and the message gets muddled. It's confusing and the editing doesn't help at all. They try to help by telling you who the guy at the desk is supposed to be with a quick label at the beginning, but by the time it's done, you feel like you're in a MadTV sketch that they didn't know how to end.

user-pic

This ad is not negative, it's just a caricature.

How about the new zoophile-rights movement? I think that's what the cow was all about.

If you haven't heard about it yet, make sure to watch the new documentary called COMING SOON, and get ready for a roller-coaster debate in the near future.

It's streaming for free at: www.comingsoon.cz

This is an absolute must-see!

user-pic

Why are Republicans obsessed with Gays?
It doesn't even work for them politically anymore. But, they continue to reer their ugly heads on this issue. DOPE!

user-pic

Everybody knows it's the conservatives who are in the closet that you need to watch your "back" for.

Why are they so scared of homosexuals anyway?

user-pic

People, people, people!! Remember that the conservative right is not against gays. They're only against gays who come out of the closet. If you're in the closet and denying your sexuality you're fine unless you get caught in an airport men's room or get dimed on by the young congressional pages you were lusting after. Better to be Mark Foley or Larry Craig, fine upstanding, good Christian men who uphold good moral values and condemn immoral sinners like Bill Clinton than to be Barney Frank an unrepentant out homosexual, who doesn't lie or hide about his sexuality but goes about his life dealing with more substantive issues. Ya know, the hardest thing about being a gay man is deciding whether to wear the cowboy or construction worker outfit to the office. Well, that and seeing the self-loathing that the conservative, fundamentalists have encouraged on the part of decent people who happen to have been born with the penchant to send their valentine's card to someone with the same plumbing.

Oh, by the way, do you think the British of mid 18th century would have labeled our colonial forefathers terrorists??

user-pic

What would you expect from someone from Mississippi? How can you tell them apart: they look like they were cross breeded with their relatives and usually have an I.Q. of about a -50%. This particular senator is indeed a representative of cross breeding, probably of homosexual stock. One shouldn't really bother about the South. They shouldn't have lost the Civil War for they would be their own nation now with their own kind of racism, bigotry, stupidity, and illiterates.

user-pic

So it looks like the ad got pulled...

What happened to Republicans like Ron Paul. He just told everyone to mind their own damn business: http://tinyurl.com/4jbkb8
