Gergen: McCain And Palin Should Calm Down The Unhinged McCainiacs

As noted below, the story of the moment is not just the unhinged quality we're seeing from more and more McCainiacs at McCain-Palin rallies, but also the leading role McCain and Palin have played in whipping up all the anger.

Here is establishmentarian David Gergen making the key point ( nice catch by HuffPo)...

"There is a free-floating sort of whipping-around anger that could really lead to some violence," Gergen says. "And I think we're not far from that."

More from Gergen: "I think it's really imperative the candidates try to calm people down."

That's the story here: That not only have McCain and Palin helped stoke all this craziness, they've also refused to utter a single syllable of condemnation of any of it -- an astonishing abdication of leadership.

They should... but they likely won't. I've talked about how this whole debacle is going to adversely affect McCain's popularity -- whether he wins or loses.

More thoughts here.

This shows the truth behind what McCain is doing and how far he has gone.
Here is a good piece in conjunctionwith the above: "McCain's Attacks Fuel Dangerous Hatred" By Frank Schaeffer

it's interesting that the folks the mccain-palin rallies aren't shouting for any particular policy proposal, but simply against sen. obama...

they're not shouting "LOWER TAXES!"...they're shouting "KILL HIM!"

what does the republican party stand for?

what does the republican party stand for?

Anger and hate. The rotten core of their philosophy is only now being exposed as the party teeters on of edge of complete collapse.

Obama should come out with an ad along the same line: McCain-Palin's economic policy, incite hate anger and division.

David Brooks ended his column "The Class War Before Palin" today with this:

"And so, politically, the G.O.P. is squeezed at both ends. The party is losing the working class by sins of omission — because it has not developed policies to address economic anxiety. It has lost the educated class by sins of commission — by telling members of that class to go away."

Although the piece is sickening in that Brooks is still contending that Palin is "impressive", it does explain what the conservative agenda used to be and what it has devolved to.

McCain and Palin aren't going to anything about this. Palin, because I think she wants it to go on, and McCain because, as NCSteve wrote, he's a two year old wandering around in a 72 year old's body.

Parents know all about the terrible twos.

I'm thinking Palin just wants to take what's left of the Republican party, wrap into the AIP, and just rebrand it as the "American" Independence Party.

She and McCain are sounding like separatists. Coincidence?

Win at any costs. They need all the support they can get, they don't have the character to stand up to their supporters, they fear they would lose them. I hope I eat crow and they actually do have a speck of respect, but it hasn't been manifested yet.

I hope McCain sings this at the debate:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CX6WHvxTYHs

Good News: McCain and Palin have succeeded in bringing bigotry out of the shadows into daylight.

The underground GOP operation of push polling, smear email tactics and tactics limited to parts of SC and GA are now at the center of the national attention.

McCain/Palin have openly declared we will win on hate mongering, racial prejudices and fear.

MSM will now be under pressure, because McCain's road to victory is an open door to hatred, division and fear. If Obama doesn't win from here, we all know why.

user-pic

Goddamn I love your outlook, kash.

I've been one of the ones arguing that it isn't all about race with those not supporting Sen. Obama but now it's becoming very apparent that race is the glue holding the majority of this anti-Obama stuff together since as you point out their not shouting against any particular polices or proposals. No substance other than he's different, he's a terrorist, his friends are terrorists, he's a racist (so it's okay if i'm one too!), etc, etc.

What's truly frightening about this is in our nation's history (as i'm sure everyone here is well aware) when someone comes to represent a true threat to the entrenched interests of the status quo they are murdered. It's always been a possibility in the back of my mind that I tried not to think about but hearing what we're hearing from McCain's supporters I wouldn't be surprised that one would try something thinking it's their patriotic duty to prevent a 'terrorist' from winning. It's a very petrifying thought.

user-pic

What you said. Or some religious nut thinking he's on a mission from god to kill the anti-Christ.

user-pic

The biggest threat here is actually mcShame. I think these folks want to provoke a backlash. It needs to be a peaceful backlash, directed at the hate-speech and inciting violence.

user-pic

There must be a call for UNITY and repudiation of demagoguery.

OT: Can anyone tell me what the hell happened to the trooper gate report scheduled for release this morning?

I think it's been circulated among the principles and it's supposed to be released to the public this afternoon.

user-pic

this afternoon Alaska time.

It's only going to be released if the Republican dominated Legislative Council (10-4) votes to release it.

user-pic

Correct. And I pray they do the right thing for America. We need transparency. We need the restoration of the Rule of Law. Alaska will be extolled if they do the right thing - when the history of this campaign is written.

More Cowbell. This can't be talked about enough. McCain needs to be shamed - if that's even possible - into toning down the hate.

http://pufferfish.typepad.com/

Clearly he wasn't talking to McCain-Palin when he said the candidates need to calm people down. They only respond or acknowledge a comment if you refer to them as the "Team of Mavericks".

user-pic

I saw Gergen last night on Colbert and he is sincerely outraged.

I saw Scarborough on Colbert proclaiming what we already know, that there is no way McCain can win this election.

user-pic

Gergen was on Colbert, right? I watch Keith, Rachel, Jon Stewart, Colbert - back to back.

they tend to run together after awhile.

LOL!

Yes he was. Scarborough was yesterday. And yes, he said this election is over.

Yes, I meant yesterday YESTERDAY.

Nevermind...

Yeah, Gergen was on Colbert last night. Scarborough was on the night before that. :)

user-pic

Thank you - you just helped me gather up what is left of my brains and put them roughly back in place.

LOL!!!!

I still think these idiots yelling stuff out at their rallies are campaign plants told to say what they're saying to get others to follow, but a lot of people here keep telling me I'm wrong.

Bill Press thinks this is the case, too, and asked Obama rep Sarah Douglass about this this morning on Press's radio show - in "safety mode," she said he just wasn't sure and we may never know. But she didn't say no, either, so I'm not the only one who thinks like this.

I think it is a combination. I think there may be a plant or two to provide incite the rage for others to speak.

However, if you listen to SOME of these people, they are angry at the bailout. They talk about becoming a socialist society. That is triggered at their perception of the bailout.

McCain should be calming the fears of this economic crisis, but instead is fueling it.

Of course, there are those nutters that are spewing racial hatred. Those people should be publicly reprimanded by McCain, but they won't be. McCain-Palin are attention whores. They must believe that these gutter tactics are working.

user-pic

Which is why the press must do its job and "out" these folks.

user-pic

I thought they were plants - and I think they may be both. Plants could be there to start the ball rolling -

user-pic

What difference does it make? Seriously? The point is that the crowd isn't booing these assholes, the crowd is cheering them. So whether these assholes are homegrown or imported, what difference does that make?

user-pic

Agreed.

user-pic

None - you're right, it makes no difference whatsoever.

It does make a huge difference if these hecklers are plants. It these are deliberate acts on the part of the campaign to foment violence, either purely verbal or actual, at some point they may come in for charges of hate crime, esp. it it leads to a tragic outcome for somebody, perhaps even in the audience in which it takes place.

Folks, let us not kid ourselves. If Palin/McCain are deliberating sponsoring agents in the audience to make these shout-outs, it makes a HUGE difference.

user-pic

Time for adults to admonish the children. The mcShame Vendetta and Anarchy Express needs to be pulled over, tickets issued, or licenses revoked. It is past time for action here.

All newspaper editors should address this in the strongest possible language ASAP.

Greg,

Astonishing Abdication of leadership - Perfect. The GOP swat team has to step in right now.

Someone above asked "what does the Republican Party stand for?"

Damn good question because longtime Republicans like my father, my boss and several older friends are embarrassed by what has happened to their party over the last 10-15 years, particularly the last 8 years.

I honestly don't think they stand for anything except winning and maintaining power! Wasn't that Rove's ultimate goal - a permanent Republican rule???

Assuming no one gives a shit about issues anymore, Republicans put the pedal to the floor on dumbing down the political landscape and doing everything possible to keep it that way.

Thank God for the Grassroots that were bourne of and kept thriving by the politics of fear and greed, the dark heart of the GOP!

Sleaziness has begun backfiring.
A former Republican Governor of Michigan William Milliken and Christopher Buckley, the son of William Buckley, the founder of National Review, denounce McCain. (Christopher: Sorry, Dad, I'm Voting for Obama).
I hope there will be more sensible Republicans coming out and denouncing McCain.

user-pic

The Obama campaign's restraint is now paying off!

Good for Milliken. He had endorsed McCain during the primaries but is now backing away.

For those who don't know Milliken, he succeeded George Romney and became Michigan's longest-serving governor, back before the Republican Party went off the rails. He's still enormously respected in the state.

Barack Obama:

“Even as we face the most serious economic crisis of our time, even as you are worried about keeping your jobs or paying your bills or staying in your homes, my opponent’s campaign announced last week that they plan to ‘turn the page’ on the discussion about our economy so they can spend the final weeks of this election attacking me instead,” Obama said during a speech in Chillicothe, Ohio.

“So in the last couple of days, we’ve seen a barrage of nasty insinuations and attacks, and I’m sure we’ll see much more over the next 25 days. We know what’s coming. We know what they’re going to do.”

“I think that folks are looking for something different,” Obama continued. “It’s easy to rile up a crowd by stoking anger and division. But that’s not what we need right now in the United States.”

“The times are too serious. The challenges are too great. The American people aren’t looking for someone who can divide this country — they’re looking for someone who will lead it. We’re in a serious crisis — now, more than ever, it is time to put country ahead of politics."

user-pic

Thank you x a million for posting that.

user-pic

The whole speech is available a few threads down.

Another silver lining here is that by allowing this kind of anger and hate to come bubbling to the surface, McCain is completely undermining the very attacks on Obama that are instigating the anger.

Yes it is dangerous, divisive, and irresponsible but that's exactly what Obama has been saying about McCain/Rove's strategy all along.

As more people like Gergen start to speak out (with prodding from sites like TPM) it will only reinforce Obama's message of unity and the moral vacuum at the heart of the Republican party.

The specific content of the various attacks will become secondary and largely dismissed by the public. That's a reason alone why it is a stupid tactical move by McCain to let this happen.

It may no longer be Morning in America, but it's still morning in Alaska (it's 9:24 AM now).

BTW, Gergen came on Colbert last night and said essentially the same thing. The appearance was an unusual one -- it looks to me as if Gergen may have called up the show to come on and give his anti-hate message.

yea saw that he got a big round of applause for what he said and he was completely right

I tend to think that all this so called "pent up rage" is the result of "plants" from the McCain campaign. It appears to be something right of the Rove playbook.

The good things about those twits yelling stupid shit out is that (a) they're a small group of Republicans who are letting themselves get this angry, and (b) that small group is making headlines and making McCain look bad to the entire country!

It takes a clueless, stubborn person to think this is helping when in fact it's turning so many, many off!

I'm not Republican at all and never, ever will be! But I know many of them, who are very cool people in my book! They're turned off by this crap! The mistake McCain's campaign is making is assuming all Republicans are alike, which they're not.

They're also relishing in the media attention these comments are getting them...but being the small-minded, pea-brained individuals they in McCain's campaign are, they're missing the point completely and completely disintegrating McCain's chances of winning more and more each day.

Not to go off on a tangent, but McCain's sole goal for becoming President is not to help the people - like Bush, he's trying to outdo his father.

What is it with the Daddy issues in the Republican party???

I think it is actually all about voter turnout -- suppressing it amongst Obama supporters, and increasing it amongst the Republican base.

What was one of the biggest fears that prevented African-Americans from supporting Obama in the beginning of his campaign? That some nut would commit the unthinkable. People would rather NOT vote for him, and have him be okay, then vote for him and lose him.

Palin and McCain are using the fear of an act of terrorism -- in this case, terrorism against a Democratic leader.

There was a time where I actually considered myself a Republican. Every day I am reminded why I left, and every day it becomes more clear that the GOP just needs to burn to the ground and start over.

user-pic

mcShame is gradually losing elderly voters. This morning more Obama signs have gone up in our neighborhood - all in front of houses of the elderly. If you look at the internals of the R2K polls, you see that every group, except the elderly was for Obama. Now, the huge lead mcShame has has shrunk to a couple percentage points. With many elderly voters moving into the undecided column. But the shift is toward Obama. Elderly people, in particular, prefer calm and order. Obama is the man for that.

user-pic
There was a time where I actually considered myself a Republican. Every day I am reminded why I left, and every day it becomes more clear that the GOP just needs to burn to the ground and start over.

You're a member of a big club, which you probably know. My husband was a 3d generation Republican. He's voted a straight Democratic ticket in the last 2 elections and he's maxxed out his donations to Obama.

I agree it needs to burn right to the ground - it's gone over the edge. And I'm particularly with you on this because, as I keep saying, we need a viable opposition party to keep the Democrats in line. Without one, we are just as liable to excess.

Please put a sane opposition party together. Please.

Ron Paul to the rescue!

I don't think voters will let this crap keep them from the polls. Did folks stop attending Dr. King's marches or rallies to "protect" him even though they knew what the possibilities were? King kept on...so will Obama.

Hell, things were more turbulent back then.

Harpers had a piece about a week ago all about the 2000 South Carolina sleaze tactics used against McCain and how McCain has adopted those tactics. There was some pretty scary stuff there, with the usual spawn of Lee Atwater players.

Divide and conquer. Appeal to the worst element in people's nature. Hopefully, they will reap what they sow.

Limo,

McCain went out of his way to hire these SAME people who destroyed him in 2000 to run this new campaign!

McCain's early slogan - Desperation From Day One!

user-pic

Great comment, Chi-j.

He most definite did! And, yes, especially after reading all of the sleaze tactics these people were involved in, it is truly revealing.

Somehow McCain, from early on, was able to "resolve" what had been done to him and bring these people into his own campaign. There was no honor right from the start.

McCain is just a wretched old man running on the platform of "I WAS ROBBED IN 2000! ITS MY TURN!"

Pathetic.

user-pic

And no one has yet asked him directly about it -

"Senator, how could you hire the same people who destroyed you in 2000 by attacking your family and using racist innuendo against your daughter to destroy your campaign? What kind of a man would work with the same people who did this to his family?"

Gallup - 10 point lead!!!

Tena,

I had the Rocky theme playing on my computer as I wrote that! ;-)

And the media have been the biggest accomplice of all the participants of the McCain's Hate Fest. They are parasiting into it as if they long waited for this moment. That's sad.
But we the people are prevailing and eventually win. How many days left? We can survive through the 24 days of suffering.

I'd bet McCain is actually, unintentionally, desperately so, suppressing his own vote.

People are angry at him. From both parties. And his own troops are acting as he's going to lose. First was the denial, now the anger. Then depression.

Which I will enjoy.

Then bargaining, then acceptance. Of Obama.

What Gergen demonstrated is 'leadership'.

I consider it a clear demonstration of the worst, if not non-existent', leadership qualities and skills to incite hatred and violence among the people you are 'claiming' to seek to serve. I feel that no matter what party or persuasion one belongs to, to have your followers express hate and threats of violence and not rebuke them out of hand is proof that you are unfit for any public office.

If the situation and circumstances were reversed I am certain that Biden and Obama would stop it in its tracks. However if the situation and circumstances were reversed and they did not I am certain we would have heard intense reprimand from any and every leader and it would have ruined his chances....

So why haven't we been hearing from everyone?

Why is McCain still in the race?

user-pic

Good for Gergen, a Republican who has shown some decency during this campaign.

And good for Joe Klein, who continues to evolve:

"But seriously, folks, I'm beginning to worry about the level of craziness on the Republican side, the over-the-top, stampede-the-crowd statements by everyone from McCain on down, the vehemence of the crowds that McCain and Palin are drawing with people shouting "Kill him" and "He's a terrorist" and "Off with his head."

Watch the tape of the guy screaming, "He's a terrorist!" McCain seems to shudder at that, he rolls his eyes... and I thought for a moment he'd admonish the man. But he didn't. And now he's selling the Ayres non-story full-time. Yes, yes, it's all he has. True enough: he no longer has his honor. But we are on the edge of some real serious craziness here and it would be nice if McCain did the right thing and told his more bloodthirsty supporters to go home and take a cold shower. But McCain hasn't done the right thing all year. His campaign is appalling, as the New York Times editorial board said today--and more, it is a national disgrace."

link:
http://www.time-blog.com/swampland/2008/10/better_to_be.html

Say it loudly, say it proudly, "a national disgrace".

Or as Joe Strummer once referred to himself, "I went from hero to zero."

Here's another one:

Veteran Republican Congressman Ray LaHood criticized his party’s vice presidential nominee Friday, saying that Sarah Palin’s vitriolic campaign rallies ""don’t befit the office she’s running for."

The only, even halfway charitable construction you can give the McCain campaign's behavior over the last week with respect to these rallies is that they're so locked into a competitive mindset that they simply refuse to see the peril in what they're unleashing.

Personally, I don't believe it for a second. I think they're stoking the rage of these yahoos deliberately, I think they're doing it out of some deranged principal (other words, they really believe that an Obama victory heralds the sundering of all that they cherish), and I think their only concern is the degree to which any of it could backfire on them. It's the most revolting spectcale this pale simulacrum of a democracy could possibly cough up.

Behold the hypocrisy.
