Election Central Sunday Roundup

DNC Raises Nearly $50 Million In September
The DNC announced this morning that they raised $49.9 million in September, and had $27.4 million cash on hand at the end of the month. Together with the Obama campaign's haul of more than $150 million, the combined Democratic fundraising total for September was an astonishing $200 million, far ahead of the RNC's $66 million and the McCain campaign's $85 million in one-time federal grant money.

Obama In North Carolina, Biden In Washington State
Barack Obama is holding a rally at 1:30 p.m. ET in Fayetteville, Norah Carolina. Joe Biden is holding a rally at 5 p.m. ET in Tacoma, Washington.

McCain In Ohio, Palin In New Mexico
John McCain is holding a rally at 1 p.m. ET in Westerville, Ohio, and a rally at 4:15 p.m. ET in Toledo, Ohio. Sarah Palin is holding a 5:30 p.m. ET rally in Roswell, New Mexico. Cindy McCain is holding a 3 p.m. ET rally in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.

McCain: Powell's Support Of Obama Not A Surprise
During his appearance this morning on Fox News Sunday, John McCain reacted to Colin Powell's endorsement of Barack Obama: "Well, I've always admired and respected General Powell. We're longtime friends. This doesn't come as a surprise." McCain added that he's glad to have the support of four former Secretaries of State -- Kissinger, Baker, Eagleburger and Haig -- and he continues to respect and admire Powell.

McCain: Obama's Fundraising Could Lead To Scandal
Also during his appearance on Fox News Sunday, McCain responded to Barack Obama's record monthly fundraising haul. "So what's going to happen?" McCain said. "The dam is broken. We're now going to see huge amounts of money coming into political campaigns, and we know history tells us that always leads to scandal." McCain added that we'll eventually have to pass legislation to deal with the problems created by Obama's small-donor fundraising model.

Polls: Obama Up In Wisconsin, McCain Ahead In West Virginia, Tight Race In Ohio.
A new round of Mason-Dixon polls gives Barack Obama a big lead of 51%-39% in Wisconsin, and McCain a 47%-41% lead in West Virginia. Meanwhile, McCain has 46%-45% edge in Ohio. All three polls have a ±4% margin of error.

Obama Has Campaigned More Than McCain In "Real Virginia"
CNN took a look at the candidates' travel schedules, and found something interesting in light of McCain surrogate Nancy Pfotenhauer's comments about "Real Virginia": In the battle for this state's 13 electoral votes, Barack Obama and Joe Biden have made more campaign appearance outside of Northern Virginia than John McCain and Sarah Palin have.

Breaking: McCain Suspends Campaign, Due to Colin-itis!
http://satiricalpolitical.com/?p=4142

user-pic

That's tooooooo funnee, they will have to pass legislation to "prevent" small donors from supporting their candidates, LMAO!

user-pic

Sarah at Roswell??

Are they sending for reinforcements?

I thought they didn't want any Aliens voting...

On November 4th - Watch the Skies - Watch the Skies!!

user-pic

Call home!

user-pic

What sort of legislation could be passed that would affect small donors? Just WTF is he talking about? Enact some sort of minimum donation necessary rule? As in, if you want to contribute, you have to contribute at least $100 the first time? I wouldn't put it past Republicans.

3 million people, John. Reality bites, doesn't it?

user-pic

They'll make it a law that you can't give less than $1000 at a time, I guess.

Or that donations will only be allowed from corporations and lobbyists - '

hell if I know. That's another weirdass McLame-ism.

user-pic

Yes, but they'd have to get it past a Democratic Congress and signed into law by President Obama. Won't happen, sister!

user-pic

Fabulous! This is so in keeping with his message. Tax cuts for the middle class is welfare. Redistributing wealth away from the richest 1% is socialism. And now, we need to reform our campaign system to minimize the influence of small donors.

Yep, God dammit, what's gone wrong here is that the little people just have too much power this time around. We've gotta fix things, so that the Big Guy is back in the driver's seat, that's what we gotta do.

user-pic
Yep, God dammit, what's gone wrong here is that the little people just have too much power this time around.

Ah, yes, Obama has given the "little people" the power to believe ... the power to realize change is possible ... the power to make it happen. The rich "fat cats" are in total disblief ... how dare they think they have a say.
This is more than wonderful .... keep believing!

user-pic

"McCain added that we'll eventually have to pass legislation to deal with the problems created by Obama's small-donor fundraising model."

Which means they'd either have to eliminate all internet donations, reduce contribution limits to $25 per person or declare that the country is under Republican martial law.

I think the 3rd option is the most likely.

user-pic

What the hell is he thinking could be done?

He's just constantly throwing this crap out there. Doesn't think well on his feet, does he?

user-pic

My guess is that he'd propose a process for requiring people to register with the state in order to donate.

And guess the degree to which that process would resemble registering to vote....

And guess how often Reeps would attempt to suppress political donations based on 'registration irregularities' and 'voter fraud', etc....

user-pic

What a seriously stupid-ass thing for him to have said.

As we all know, the main problem with money in politics has to do with ACCESS....does he think that Obama's going to start doing favors for all 3.1 million donors?

user-pic

Well, he could save the country. I'd consider that a favor at this point. :)

user-pic

Actually, you're right. That would be payback enough. :)

user-pic

I can almost hear McCain speechifying now....

"By receiving so much money from so many people, Obama has left himself beholden to the interests of the American People. That has got to change!"

user-pic

When a Republican says something seriously stupid, you can be certain they mean it as a seriously intended policy.

user-pic

Wow. Just...wow.

McCain, honestly, just what the hell is wrong with you?

user-pic

Love the endorsement and especially the 150 extra large.

Another point or two in the nationals and in OH, MO, IN and VA would be nice for Monday...

Gobama!

user-pic

Add 1-2% in Battlegrounds to Obama's final numbers for ground game

user-pic

Is that before or after the Bradley effect?

(Hey, it's a joke - just couldn't resist getting Tena riled up again)

user-pic

Probably, to be most accurate we should do it twice, once before and once after.

user-pic

"Norah Carolina?"

Been thinking a bit too much about Norah O'Donnell, Eric?

user-pic

Sorta like Gary Indiana.

user-pic

LOL!

user-pic

Raoul, you can't blame the kid if NILFs occupy his subconscious.

user-pic
McCain added that we'll eventually have to pass legislation to deal with the problems created by Obama's small-donor fundraising model.

LMAO!

And just how are you going to do that, McLame? Kill off all the small amount donors? Put them in Gitmo?

that's the funniest thing yet -

user-pic

Does anyone know how much money each campaign has left on hand at this point?
-------------------
Late late last night I wrote about this crazy Cindy holding a rally on her own. She is another Bachmann. She is probably Rovier than Rove. I guarantee you by the end of the day you will find out the extent of her fascist extremism.

user-pic

Yeah, McCain will no doubt push for legislation to keep the little folks out of the electoral game. The unwashed rabble is making the playing field too damn level.

John McCain will make sure control of campaign financing will be returned to the moneyed interests and lobbyists. Now that Obama has built the New Model, destroying it is the mavericky thing to do.

user-pic

Grass-roots small donors are destroying the fabric of America. The non-rich making their voices heard through millions of small donations? That's the craziest thing I've ever heard. What will happen if politicians answer to regular people instead of just the rich? Quickly! We must legislate.

But seriously, McCain did this to himself. People were donating so much because they were pissed at the negative campaigning and fear-mongering (just look at what happened with Tinklenberg). It's empowering that regular people have been able to fight back against it.

user-pic

First paragraph just cracked me up!

user-pic

We might just develop a government that is honest and productive ... and, and, again respected world wide? Could this possibly be the results 97 percent of Americans are striving for. The Republicans have had their opportunity and failed ...we will show them how it is done!
user-pic

"McCain added that we'll eventually have to pass legislation to deal with the problems created by Obama's small-donor fundraising model."

Simple: pass laws banning contributions to Democratic candidates.

user-pic

What's funny is that now I'm motivated to send Obama another c-note... maybe two!

Could we get to $200 large for Rock-tober??!!

user-pic

"not a surprise"= they're both black. -john "asshat" mccain

user-pic

Fareed Zakaria from GPS on CNN just endorsed barak Obama!!!

user-pic

Fareed's a good guy.

I'm not surprised, but that's nice just the same. Mr. Zakaria is brilliant.

user-pic

Awesome! Love that guy and would love to get a hold of his statement.

user-pic

If some hater suggest again that Obama should "donate" his money to charity,I am going to scream. On CNN they were amazed and cannot understand where all this money is coming from especially in these hard economic times? Simple, people want change and are willing to part with some of their hard earn ,limited cash if it means better economic times ahead. We make small donations to Obama (25.00 being the most we donated at one time) and we are a family of 5 with one income and at times cannot afford $ 10.00 or $15.00 dollar donation, but we do it because we believe in Obama's message. My 13 year old packs a school lunch and does not go to the movies with friends in order for us to make some of our small donations. He is proud that we can contribute and feels he is part of history in the making. This is what McCain and his supporters simply cannot understand.

user-pic

I can explain it to those fuckwits on CNN -

I donated $150 the other night to be a matching donation. It was matched by 6 new donors, in portions of my donation - $25, $10, $50 donations - they sent me emails - that's how I know.

A lot of people don't have $200 to donate. But most people have $10.

user-pic

McCain's complaints about the abundance of small donors sound exactly like his (and the GOP's in general) complaints about 'voter fraud' and all their efforts to suppress voting wherever they can.

If only these Reep jerks cared half as much about democracy in this country as they do about democracy in Iraq.

user-pic

For years the wealthy and big companies have been able to contribute at will and back candidates but now, when the average voter has decided to make their voices heard, suddenly McCain feels that's bad and has to be stopped? He finds it unacceptable that millions of "Joe the plumbers" have decided to become involved and he wants to enact legislation to prevent average people from having any influence?

Really?

Well now we know where McCain feels the balance of power in this country SHOULD be and it isn't with "Joe the plumber".

user-pic

"will lead to scandal"

I figgered it out, methinks. McCain is simply unable to conceive of any political donation which adds up to significant amounts which is not "bundled", and comes with demands from the bundler. Or has been extorted, in some way, from the donaters That's always the scandal isn't it?

The fact that many people sent small donations is beyond McCain's ability to understand, as a political fact. There must be some illegality or ethical problem attached to it, he thinks.

user-pic

In fact, companies are barred by law in a lot of states from donating money to campaigns.

Their CEOs are the ones who contribute, personally. The GOP takes care of its real core base: the wealthiest 1% of the population.

All the rabble down at the bottom - the Palinites? They're just tools to enable multi-billionaires to pick our presidents.

user-pic

Yup, small contributors can exert as much pressure as any revolving door lobbyist that McSame relies on to fund his campaign.

/sarcasm

user-pic

Yeah! Just imagine an Obama administration slaving away as it responds to all of those individual emails demanding access after the election. There will be no end to it! LOL.

user-pic

Someone should ask McCain why he "isn't surprised" that Powell endorsed Obama. Because it sounds to me like the same thing the rest of the wingnuts are saying, only leaving out "...because he's Black."

user-pic

The GOP trogs will spin it as "the Blacks stick together"

user-pic

If it was about racial solidarity, Powell wouldn't belong to the GOP, as they have few faces of color.

He also could have endorsed him over a year ago.

user-pic

I just donated $25 to Obama's campaign. I prefer to donate to Kiva and other charities to help people. Money is needed so desperately, so many places now. thanks to the last 8 years. I feel far too much money is spent on getting elected. This was a token donation so Obama can add to the number of small donors. I will donate to the campaigns of those trying to defeat bad candidates, too. Obama will need all the help he can get from Congress and the Senate.

Bless Colin Powell and the Chicago Tribune!

user-pic

That FoxNews transcript is an awesome read: filled with ignorance, lies, and heaps upon heaps of irony.

To wit:
"WALLACE: But Senator, back — if I may, back in 2000 when you were the target of robo calls, you called these hate calls and you said...

MCCAIN: They worked."

Yeah, who cares if the ads are an awful political tactic not done in the spirit of integrity? It worked.

Also?
"WALLACE: What have you learned about the mainstream media in this campaign?

MCCAIN: Oh, listen, I — if I complain about anything, my friend, a guy that stood fifth from the bottom of his class at the Naval Academy that now has the nomination of the party of Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt and Ronald Reagan, I'd be crazy.

I'm honored and humbled. This is the most exciting experience that anybody could have. I'm just grateful."

Imagine if Obama had those same qualifications... Would he even have made it this far? Yet, McCain's spending all this money, and roughening up civic discourse, just so he can get some attention lavished upon him.

Disgusted?

user-pic

Time to get off our rusty dusties and go out and chat with people who aren't sure they're in the choir, yet.

AND to donate to democrats running for the house and senate who are in tight races. We've got to make it possible for Obama to pass legislation when he's elected.

user-pic

It's not hard to see McMajorShit boycotting Obama's inaugural. He'll be back on Turtle Island in Fiji (with Palin/without Cindy):

http://www.neilyoung.com/lwwtoday/index.html

user-pic

632,000 new donors in one month. That just blows me away.

McCain doesn't get it. 3.1 million people can't get personal favors, like Keating did, so what scandal is there going to be?

We just donated yesterday, but we will be working hard from now to election day.

user-pic

Hey people, it looks like Neil Young is running the (Joe The) Plumbers unit this year.

Check out: http://www.neilyoung.com/lwwtoday/index.html

This makes me laugh.

As for the Powell endorsement, like many of you guys I don't care for Powell because of his role in the Bush administration, but this endorsement -- not only the fact he endorsed (which was expected anyway), but the reasons he said he did so -- is just powerful, more so than I had expected from him. I'm pleasantly surprised he was so forthcoming.

F**k McScum, he calls tax cuts for middle class people "welfare" and a grass-root movement "scandal". Can't hide his disdain for ordinary people like us. F**k him. With 16 days to go, I will send more money to the Obama campaign.

user-pic
F**k McScum, he calls tax cuts for middle class people "welfare" and a grass-root movement "scandal". Can't hide his disdain for ordinary people like us. F**k him. With 16 days to go, I will send more money to the Obama campaign.

The statement "can't hide his didain for ordinary people like us" is so evident. He spews sweet nothings at Town Hall Meetings only get votes and has the attitude "He needs a shower after mingling". He basically reeks SPOILED BRAT!

user-pic

As he finds another way to "defund the left' by limiting campaign contributions like Obama has received, maybe McCain can team up with Rep. Bachmann to root out "Anti-American" members of Congress. He can send Todd and Sarah Palin out to find out where the Real America is, starting by finding Pfotenhauer's Real Virginians.
Yeah. What this country needs is another GOP witch hunt.

Forget Al and Tipper
Let's bring back the Gipper
And Joe McCarthy too.

user-pic

McCain is becoming a blowhard in the sprit of Rush Limbaugh.Obama is getting money from people like me that can`t afford four more years of nation destruction like the last eight.I`m gladly giving money that I can`t really afford and time that I can, in order to elect a man of integrity.
Palin is in Roswell,N.M.,today.She better watch out.Mulder and Scully are not available, today

user-pic

McCain brags about being "fifth from the bottom" at West Point? Wow.

user-pic

He's not trying to play to intellectuals. Or anyone who cognates in a logical manner.
This'll work for the knuckle dragging racists like Joe (Sam) the unlicensed butt crack who would benefit from Obama's (Sammy Davis Jr.) tax structure; albeit that he's unable to recognize such realities.
This is McCain's crowd. They identify with his academic failure.

user-pic

I have a question for all the commenters here. Josh recently (earlier today) posted another cautionary note about complacency and so-forth by Obama supporters, and seemed to suggest that this is widespread already:

And many Obama supporters, sure the election is basically wrapped up, appear ready to slack

What I'm wondering is, who exactly is being complacent? This almost sounds like the notorious Fox News-style "some say" argument - assert that there is complacency, but conveniently avoid naming actual names.

Really, from where I sit and read, I'm not seeing any of this. Who's being complacent? Who's saying that nothing more needs to be done, that it's over and we don't even have to bother voting? Sure, there's lots of optimism but so what - it's a sign of good morale. Are we not allowed good morale, lest it interfere with our usual handwringing?

user-pic

I agree for the most part. I can't see all that many committed Obama voters forgetting to vote on Nov. 4th.

On the other hand, it doesn't hurt to keep needling everyone, even if there's just a small chance of complacency.

user-pic

Needling is fine - I just don't see why it has to be couched in the form of a lie. I rarely get on Josh's case (there's virtually never a need), but I was a little taken aback by his comment.

If there is complacency out there (here?), I'm not seeing it. What am I missing?

user-pic

Sarah Palin is holding a 5:30 p.m. ET rally in Roswell, New Mexico.

Extraterrestrials unite! Choose one of your own!

user-pic

Sarah Palin in Roswell, New Mexico. Yeah, that's useful.

Hilarious.

user-pic

"McCain added that we'll eventually have to pass legislation to deal with the problems created by Obama's small-donor fundraising model."

Um, okay, but how about a little credit for Howard Dean, Joe Trippi, their hard working staff and enthusiastic voter base who essentially 'invented' the process perfected so well by Barack Obama, David Plouffe, their staff and the tens of thousands of motivated contributors who made this all possible.

Just a quick nod to not-so-ancient political history…

user-pic

I wonder what difference McCain sees between Howard dean, Joe Trippi, and Barack Obama.

Whatever could that difference be? Oh, it's coming to me...here it is...just within reach...nope, gone. Guess I'll never know why McCain says Obama created the donor problem.

user-pic

In order to just TIE Obama at 269 electoral votes, McCain has to win the states of Nevada, North Dakota, Missouri, Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia, New Hampshire, Virginia, North Carolina and Florida. He has to WIN THEM ALL just to TIE Obama at 269 electoral votes. All he has to do to lose the election is lose ONE of those states. All Obama has to do to win the election is win ONE of those states. Only ONE! Does anyone believe Obama can't win ONE of those states?

user-pic

Small donors give McCain a headache just like voters give the GOP heartburn.

About complacency....I went to the giant rally in St. Louis yesterday and then came home and prepared "here's your polling place" packets that volunteers delivered to identified Obama supporters this afternoon. While I was waiting for these folks to get back I called 50 voters to survey whether or not they would be voting for Obama. There's no complacency out here in Missouri; we're ignoring the polls with consistency; and we're all telling folks that we absolutely NEED their vote(s).

All who can need to complete the distasteful task of phoning voters; I agree it's like a root canal but it's needed. Thanks.

Paid for by St. Louisians for a sane government. :)

user-pic

I just read the FOX transcript. I'm freaking dizzy. The old coot is bat shit crazy.

user-pic

He does seem to be getting actually out of his depth, doesn't he? The rural, low-information base still loves him (and especially the Moose Queen), but he's starting to get close to the laughing stock range with many others.

Letterman grabbed him and absolutely would not let go regarding the Klondike Barbie decision. And he gets that now whereever he goes, as even his own party's stalwarts like Peggy Noonan pile on. His ability to credibly spew bullshit in response is coming under real strain. Real strain.

user-pic

Inundated a few months ago, Mary-Kay Gamel, literature professor at U.C. Santa Cruz disabused all inquirers as to her purported authorship of an account of one family's nightmare week-long vacation to Turtle Island in Fiji circa 2000 WITH THE McCAIN CLAN.

The same account can now be found on Neil Young's website, authored by Doctor Ana Dubey who is a practicing psychologist in San Francisco.

Given the amazing allegations made in the written account, it is not hard to understand why a mainstream media outlet or a political or current events website would touch it. Why suffer a storm of attack dogs, storm troopers (digital and otherwise) and Gordon Liddy wannabes?

Why would a major artist such as singer/songwriter Neil Young hazard the blowback from acting as an agent publicizing the allegations. He is known as having supported Ronald Reagan's re-election in 1984 and no one excepting a certifiable kook would suspect him of being a Rove operator of the left. He would not be so stupid as to feature the allegations in the way that he has without his lawyer and his record label's lawyers vetting the allegations and Ms. Dubey in equal measure.

Moreover, it is well known that Neil's father has had a career in journalism in Canada and has been quite well known and respected north of the border.

Artist Young has deep pockets, his label has deep pockets and the McCains can surely afford the finest lawyers in the nation.

Wake up people; there may likely be gold here:

http://www.neilyoung.com/lwwtoday/index.html

user-pic

It's interesting, though not surprising, to see that Ohio may yet again vote for ugliness and idiocy.

user-pic

Even I was a little surprised to see Palin actually go to Roswell. WTF??!

Still, I have said repeatedly that her natural cohort is the low-information/anti-information voter who is often 'UFO-curious.' Why deal
with reality when you can dream shit up?

Her link to UFO-curious space shots makes Roswell not *such* a totally odd choice. Still pretty flipping odd, though.

user-pic

Oh, and just to state the obvious, on top of (a) the increasingly indefensible Klondike Barbie decison, (b) backfired campaign-suspension antics,

his again-unvetted embrace of Non-plumber-the-Republican-snake-Joe is another McCain failure.

How are people supposed to get behind such inexplicably poor decision-making?

user-pic

Roswell is known to the rest of you as the UFO capital of the world. In fact, it is in southeastern New Mexico -- redneck rancher and military rocket/missile program country. It has much more in common with the Texas panhandle than it does with Santa Fe/Albuquerque.

user-pic

I wonder if McCain's remarks about "small donor reform" are a signal about the thinking of the Rove-bots running his campaign, a hint of a broader strategy being considered by the thuggist wing of the GOP. Go through FEC donor reports with a fine-tooth comb until you unearth a Willie Horton or someone who lived next door to a madrassa before they immigrated, and then shriek about how our political process is being corrupted. I'd watch for that and prepare for it. The small donor model must be protected at all costs. Ending Internet donations is the sort of thing certain elements in both parties could get behind.
