Election Central Saturday Roundup
Obama About To Break Advertising And Fundraising Records
Barack Obama is days away from breaking the TV advertising record set by George W. Bush in 2004 of $188 million, and has been outspending John McCain by a ratio of four to one, thanks to Obama's decision to opt out of public finance. And that's not all: the campaign is expected to announce in a few days that it raised over $100 million in September, setting an all-time record for a single month.
Obama In Missouri Today
Barack Obama is campaigning today in Missouri, with a 1 p.m. ET rally in St. Louis and a 5 p.m. ET rally in Kansas City. Joe Biden does not have any public events.
McCain In North Carolina And Virginia, Palin In Pennsylvania -- And Live From New York!
John McCain is campaigning today in two swing Southern states, with an 11 a.m. ET rally in Concord, North Carolina, and a 3 p.m. ET rally in Woodbridge, Virginia. Sarah Palin held a rally at 10:30 a.m. ET this morning in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and has a cameo appearance tonight on Saturday Night Live. Cindy McCain is holding a 5 p.m. ET rally in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.
McCain: Obama's Tax Policies Are Welfare
At a rally on Friday, John McCain blasted Barack Obama's tax policies as being effectively a giant welfare program: "Sen. Obama claims that he want to give a tax break to the middle class, but not only did he vote for higher taxes for the middle class in the Senate, his plan gives away your tax dollars to those who don't pay taxes. That's not a tax cut; that's welfare."
Obama Today: McCain Thinks Out Of Touch On Taxes
During his rally today in St. Louis, Barack Obama will rebut McCain's charges on taxes. "He actually said it goes to, 'those who don't pay taxes,' even though it only goes to working people who are already getting taxed on their paycheck," Obama will say, according to pre-released excerpts. "That's right, Missouri - John McCain is so out of touch with the struggles you are facing that he must be the first politician in history to call a tax cut for working people 'welfare.'"
Obama And Hillary To Campaign Together On Monday
Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton will be campaigning together on Monday, with a rally in Orlando, Florida.
McCain Calls Joe The Plumber, Invites Him On The Trail
John McCain told a rally last night that he'd called Joe "The Plumber" Wurzelbacher on the phone. McCain invited Wurzelbacher to come with him on the campaign trail, but no dates have been set.
Cindy McCain's Lawyer To NYT: Investigate Obama's Past Drug Use
Cindy McCain's attorney John Dowd sent a letter to the New York Times lambasting them for looking into her personal life. "It is worth noting that you have not employed your investigative assets looking into Michelle Obama," Dowd wrote. "You have not tried to find Barack Obama's drug dealer that he wrote about in his book, Dreams of (sic) My Father. Nor have you interviewed his poor relatives in Kenya and determined why Barack Obama has not rescued them. Thus, there is a terrific lack of balance here."

But we wouldn't ask about Obama's "drug use" or African relatives if he'd agreed to 1,245 town hall meetings...

I think occasional recreational drug use in college is exactly the same as stealing drugs from a charity to feed an addiction. Spouses should be off limits, but if this spouse is attacking him for this, then it's fair to have a little context behind the attacks.
October 18, 2008 12:58 PM | Reply | Permalink
Your would think that Cindy McCain's people would be the last people on earth to demand that the media investigate past drug use since it is known that she stole drugs form a medical charity she was involved with to feed her habit.
This is not coincidence that they attack on their own the topics of their own checkered past/record. This actually works for them on several fronts. It attacks and smears Obama, but it also makes it so that if your counter-attack on her glaring drug problems, it devolves into a "both sides do it", he said/she said media kerfuffle. This makes people tune it out and thus a 'win' for them on the the issue.

I've been reading that "expected to announce $100 million for September" for two days now, and I wonder who the source of that was.
fIs the same "anonymous Democratic fundraiser" who told us last June that Obama was going to raise $100 million a month? That number then was used to evaluate Obama's fundraising "success", and generated "concern" that he was "falling behind his goals". But that "anonymous Democratic fundraiser" wasn't even connected with the campaign, so the whole thing was just bogus. Is the same thing about to happen here?

It's simple. I learned this in my Reaganomics class:
Welfare = A black hole where the government spends money and it never comes back.
Like all government spending, it's different from regular money that would then get circulated through the economy, create jobs, and benefit society. It magically disappears when it leaves the hands of the welfare queen/king.
I hope this helps to clarify.

Your comment is priceless, but also quite true. That really is the basis of their argument. Add to it the racial/minority animosity as another layer to it, and you have, unfortunately, hit precisely on the core dynamic of why the GOP has been able to shatter the traditional Democratic New Deal coalition of old.

Why in the hell is Biden off the trail? A little over two weeks out says to me that both on the ticket should have a full schedule from here on out. It certainly seems that the McCain/Palin ticket is outworking Obama/Biden.
I expect the Obama Camp to drop their September numbers Sunday afternoon, right after the Sunday talkies are taped.

As I've commented in the past, what is of interest in regards to Cindy McCain is not her drug use, but the Class 3 felony fraud that she engaged in to obtain the narcotics http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/talk/2008/09/cindy-mccain-and-the-narcotics.php
Those offenses, if they had been prosecuted by the State of AZ would have been punishable by 10 to 20 years in prison, with 2/3 served before being eligable for parole. What kind of consequences do you think Cindy experienced for her crimes?
She claimed that she served community service, but there's not evidence of that. She also claimed that she entered treatment - no evidence of that, either.
My embedded post here includes a link to the Phoenix News Times article from 1994, if anyone is interested in the details.

After the way Letterman absolutely hammered McCain on Thursday, SNL better not go chickenshit on us and give Palin some cute little cameo with Tina Fey, a'la Hillary and Amy Poehler. If they do another skit where they absolutely pummel her, and then Palin comes out at the end and waves, fine; but if they do her the favor of providing a nice, friendly clip for all the Sunday and Monday shows to run, I'm going to be pissed.
October 18, 2008 1:02 PM | Reply | Permalink
I hate to disappoint you...but I can't imagine Palin agreeing to come on if they were going to skewer her. I would very much expect the same as the Hillary/Poehler skit.
October 18, 2008 1:07 PM | Reply | Permalink
I doubt McCain would have come on Letterman if he'd known that he was going to get destroyed, either. I imagine they told him, "Dave is still angry, so we don't what he's going to ask you," and McCain -- incorrectly -- assumed that Letterman would hit him a little bit at first, and then let up because Dave wouldn't want it to get awkward.
SNL doesn't finalize anything until after the initial run-through tonight, so they could have accurately told Palin, "We don't know what the skit will be, but it'll be something similar to what we've done before." After that, everything is on her. If she wants to walk at the last minute, let her do it.
On the other hand, if SNL does give in and get friendly with her, it completely takes the edge off everything they've done before, and further proves how far they've fallen since the original cast. That's why it was so important that Letterman never let up -- it proved that he meant what he said.

October 18, 2008 1:37 PM | Reply | Permalink
Good. That means she's probably going to walk on at the end of a skit, which means there's a better chance that they're going to keep pummeling her. I seriously want to see a pitchforks and torches type of thing, where Tina Fey is just whipping the crowd into a frenzy. Let Palin walk on and put her stamp of approval on that. My only fear is that Jim Downey, the guy who writes the political sketches, is pretty conservative, though I do think he likes Obama. Plus he was the head writer for Letterman, so he definitely knows that the standard was set on Thursday night.

Why isn't Obama hitting harder on this taxation crap? The stuff from the speech today is weak. Why is he even saying the word welfare right now?
They should be hitting on how McCain himself denounced the Bush tax cuts in 2001, saying that the middle class couldn't afford to bear the brunt of taxation just to benefit the wealthy. Obama should demand that McCain explain in what ways the middle class is better off now than it was in 2001, when he voted against the same tax cuts that are now the center of his economic plan.
The campaign should also point out that Joe the Plumber would pay THREE TIMES MORE in his taxes under McCain's plan. So, how exactly does McCain plan to help middle-class folks get to the point where they can buy businesses and get ahead? Buy giving more tax breaks to Joe's boss?
Obama should also hammer home that the tax increases that he proposes are on the very wealthiest Americans and would only return them to what they paid under Clinton. Meanwhile, McCain is proposing that the wealthy pay less in taxes than they did under Nixon, Reagan, and Bush. Does McCain think these former presidents were all socialists?
And finally, Obama should just ask point blank whether McCain supports a flat tax.
It's time to shut the man up about this garbage and do so forcefully. I don't think most voters understand what McCain's tax plan really looks like--they think it means equal tax cuts for all of us. The Obama camp should be showing everyone that bar graph that reveals McCain's tax plan as the welfare for the rich that it really is.

(1) I don't even know what a concern troll is. Just because someone disagrees with you doesn't make them a troll. Unless you are Michelle Bachmann.
(2) I don't think the campaign has been perfect in every way. It's been very, very good, particularly in terms of message control, discipline, and grass roots organizing.
(3) However, the campaign has not been perfect at mounting good defense. It turned out ok that they didn't have a war room at the RNC because they had lots of time to mount rebuttals and because McCain was truly terrible in the month after his convention. Perfectly abysmal. But unlike the loony tune crap he's pulled that most people don't care about, people do care about taxes. For a long time, they didn't think Obama would raise their taxes, and I think this helped Obama "convert" many center-right folks, who were scared about the economy. Obama doesn't have much time now to correct McCain's slanderous bs, and he is letting McCain dominate the news cycle. I don't think either of those moves are close to "perfect." Obama pulled ahead because of leaners, and those voters are the most vulnerable to last minute swings. I believe this country is disturbingly racist and brainwashed by Reaganomics voodoo crap, so I think where McCain is going now could be effective enough to erode a few points of Obama's lead. I think he needs to stay on top of the news cycle during these final two weeks.

Has anyone taken the time to co-ordinate the DOJ appointments with swing states? If I recall correctly the entire point of interim appointments was to be able to steal the 2008 election.
Of those states which are now being touted as must wins for McCain that Bush won in 2004...how many have had GOP appointed AG's?
MO, Fl, CO, NV, MI, NC and W. VA and VA are a few of the 'must wins' that they are saying McCain is behind in.
The GOP is laying the ground work to steal the election...and it is blatant.
None of these TV shows have on Inglesias, when he was the tip of the iceberg and completely understands how this entire 'fraudulent' accusation is a sham and cover for stealing votes by disenfranchising voters.

Dude...SNL is never disrespectful to its hosts...never. I'm already disappointed that Palin is being allowed to appear. It will sadly be one of those.."see, she's just a lot fun type person" instead of the political poison to our democracy she really is. The SS will repeat their recent rally roles and not permit anyone to do or say anything that might be negative to Palin.
They prevented reporters from asking supporters at these rallies any questions because they might say something negative. That is a demonstration of controlling the press...they cannot report unapproved messages. Why would anyone not think Tina Fey will be intimidated if not out right threatened by the SS and Palin's rabid supporters?? There will be nothing that will put Palin in a bad light allowed.
btw...all this fund raising is pure media profiteering off the substance of our democracy...it should not be allowed. Profiteering from the campaigns has gotten way out of hand and prevents good qualified people from gaining office. Making air time etc free does not cost except in losing "projected" profits. Get the money out of politics and we would have a government by and for the people.

Just an idea, but with that big of a war chest would it not make sense to run ads in Mississippi, Georgia, Kentucky, NC and Minnesota to help those to help those really close senate races and win a 60-seat majority. In the case of Mississippi, Musgrove is pulling even with Wicker and the DSCC has dropped 3 million on that race. In one recent poll Jim Martin is tied with Saxby Chambliss. With an added boost by the Obama campaign could it not help affect the outcome of those races?
I'm just thinking about the filibuster parade the GOP is going to pull if we get a 59-41 split in the senate.

The troops. The small farmer. Jessica Lynch. Pat Tillman. Terri Schiavo. Sarah Palin. Joe The Plumber.
It's the same old republican shell game. Develop a policy that serves corporate interests, then find some poor unsuspecting soul and create a heroic myth around them as they become the face of the policy. Then when someone disagrees with the policy, point out that they are attacking the hero.

Cindy McCain has a lot of damn nerve.
She is an admitted drug addict and a thief of the lowest denomination.
She is an adulterer.
Case closed.

Since the Times is going after Cindy again (they did a story on her in late August), when are they going to do the follow-up story on McCain's gambling? That's what I'm waiting for.

As worthless rat lawyers goes Cindy McCain’s lawyer is at the top of his class. I am not excusing Obama drug use, who hasn’t used drugs? But how many of us stole drugs from your own charity to support your drug habit, get caught and never serve a day in jail. The only ones who got in trouble where the unknowing doctors working for her charity. They can never practice medicine again.
So I guess Cindy' lawyer will also be investigating Bush's drug use to
