Election Central Morning Roundup
New McCain Ad: Obama Endorses McCain -- And Lieberman
The new McCain ad, set to air in key states, features footage of Barack Obama in a Senate hearing from January 2007, praising the McCain-Lieberman plan on global warming:
"I want to thank Senator Lieberman, as well as Senator McCain, for the outstanding leadership that they've shown," Obama says. This ad might have been more effective if Joe Lieberman had been McCain's running mate, instead of somebody who denies man-made global warming. And furthermore, the environment isn't even one of the big issues in this campaign.
Obama In Iowa And Indiana; Biden In Ohio -- And Delaware
Barack Obama has a 12:30 p.m. ET rally in Des Moines, Iowa, and a 7:30 p.m. ET rally in Highland, Indiana. Joe Biden is curiously starting the day with a 10:30 a.m. ET rally in Newark, Delaware -- in his home state, which is a virtual lock to vote Democratic -- followed by a 2 p.m. ET rally in Kettering, Ohio, and a 4 p.m. ET rally in Lima, Ohio.
McCain Touring Ohio; Palin In Pennsylvania
John McCain is campaigning through Ohio today, with a 10 a.m. ET rally in Hanoverton, a smaller 12:15 p.m. ET event in Steubenville and another such event at 1:30 p.m. ET in New Philadelphia, and a 5:50 p.m. ET event alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger in Columbus. Sarah Palin is continuing on the campaign's much-derided attempt to win Pennsylvania, with a 9 a.m. ET rally in Latrobe, and a 4 p.m. ET rally in York.
Obama Camp Downplays Report Of Rahm As Chief Of Staff
The Obama camp moved last night to talk down an AP report that the candidate approached Rahm Emanuel about being chief of staff -- though they didn't quite deny it, either. Obama told the Chicago Sun-Times, "I'm trying to win an election," and David Axelrod said, "Don't believe everything you read."
Poll: Obama Up Ten Points In Colorado
A new survey of Colorado from Public Policy Polling (D) confirms the general consensus that Barack Obama is on his way to winning the two-time Bush state of Colorado. The numbers: Obama 54%, McCain 44%, with a ±2.2% margin of error.
McCain To Appear On Saturday Night Live
John McCain will make a special guest appearance tomorrow night on Saturday Night Live. Whether he moves anybody's votes with the appearance will be anybody's guess, but at least it shows he's a good sport about all those recent sketches in which Darrell Hammond has torn him to pieces.
McCain: Joe The Plumber Is "My Role Model"
At a rally last night in Ohio, John McCain referred to Joe "The Plumber" Wurzelbacher as "an American hero, a great citizen of Ohio and my role model." And no, this is not from The Onion.

What the hell? You know it's bad when your opponent is so popular that you are using his praise of you in your ads. Someone needs to tell him that the whole coattails thing doesn't work when you are running against the guy.

So McCain is palling around with terrorists now? Heh, heh. He's trying to paint Barack Obama as a terrorist, a socialist, a Muslim, a communist, and... I don't know, a cannibal, next? But at the same time, he's arguing that this terrible person has PRAISED McCain?
OK, John, why are you palling around with cannibals?

I really think this might be the worst ad of the season, in terms of effectiveness. It comes off as a testament to Obama's moderate tendencies and bipartisan spirit.
October 31, 2008 11:17 AM | Reply | Permalink
And the other thing is:
Doesn't that ad demonstrate Obama's ability to reach out across the aisle and work in a bi-partisan manner and listen to everyone's ideas? How does McCain get off calling Obama an extreme liberal while at the same time showing us how he works across party lines?

So identifying with Wurzelbacher as his "role model" is supposed to make McCain a populist? I don't think so --- not when McCain owns 8+ houses and 13+ cars. What a fool!

Well, it might be effective (I've given up trying to parse what will work with undecideds at this point), but as an aside it literally shows Obama graciously reaching across the aisle to give credit, work together, etc.
Great news about Colorado!
I'll give props to McCain for being a good sport but he really would be better served by getting a good night's sleep. I can't see how an SNL appearance is going to turn things around for him at this point.

As some pundit said a week ago, the old fighter pilot may still have a couple barrel rolls in him. Looks more like a tailspin at the moment.
(As a point of fact, McCain wasn't a fighter pilot, he was an attack pilot. He wasn't good enough to be trusted with a high performance plane.)

October 31, 2008 9:23 AM | Reply | Permalink
WTH is with the clip of John McCain sitting at the end?
Here, let me translate this ad:
"Hey all you sappy treehuggers, listen up, because I'm about to talk about that global warming nonsense--you know, about the 'health' of the planet.
"Obama, that hippie-hero y'all love so much--yeah he's an unamerican socialist just like you--well, last year, he said that my buddy Joe The Senator I had a good plan for the environment. And then Obama, who I have often said doesn't know what's good for business, well, he must have been right this time, because he said my plan is good for business.
"So, look, Obama wouldn't lie to you. You like Obama, Obama likes me, and therefore you must like me by proxy. Let's just cut out the middle man, shall we?
"I mean, look at me, I love nature. Here I am SITTING in nature! My running mate, she wants to protect nature too--some of her favorite outdoor activities INVOLVE nature. She couldn't be here today because she's off hunting wolves, keeping their population in check! I'm very proud of her, and that's the kind of leadership we need; the kind of leader that's not afraid to get her hands bloody, er, dirty!
"I'm John McCain, a gumpy old codger on a park bench, and I approve this message. Checkers, anyone? ...Anyone?"

How many votes does he think he can get by doing SNL? He'd be better off going to a random street corner in Philly and shouting about how great a president he'd be.
Someone explain the logic to me- McCain's only hope to win votes is to try to scare people off Obama, and a comedic "attack" is an oxymoron.
My guess is that it will be as awkward and creepy as his last Letterman appearance.

That new McCain ad makes no damn sense. It shows Obama as bipartisan and able to work with Republicans, and including his endorsement suggests Obama is respectable and trustworthy. Whatever happened to "Who Is The Real Barack Obama?" Does McCain really want the endorsement of a secret Muslim who will take money from hard working Whites and "spread the wealth around" as welfare for lazy jobless Blacks? And what the hell does Lieberman have to do with anything?

It's over folks. The media needs to bank a few more ad bucks, but the election is over.
Obama's winning by a landslide.
It's not like the old days, you can watch the election in real time now, and Florida already has over 40% of it's 2004 total in the bag. And it looks to be a Obama blow-out, maybe 54-46 in Florida alone.
YOu might as well get used to the fact that there's a massive landslide coming up.
Of course, McCain has one game left to play, and the media, conflict addicts that they are, will go along. McCain's game is to find any positive poll data, ad say that he's got momentum.
But, alas, he's a old, privileged politician, a liar by trade. It's over, has been for awhile.
Enjoy Halloween, it's the last time the scary Repubs will have the Presidency for quite awhile.

Gosh. McCain uses praise from Obama as an attack ad, against Obama? Hasn't McCain's whole argument been about his ability to cross party lines and end the culture of bi-partisanship in Washington? It just doesn't look good when your opponent does acknowledge something good you've done and you go and use it against them. It undercuts your whole message and makes you, partisan. This doesn't add up, at least not in reality. Maybe in McCain's mind it does. But then again, that's not reality. Very weak argument, but, maybe I'm cynical, but I can see it workin' on the 75 and under IQ of undecideds, gosh darnnit.

Joe the Plumber is the biggest Goober. He only went out to talk to Obama in the first place to try to disrupt his campaign that day. Got his face on the cameras and hasn't stopped trying to manipulate the public performance since.
This is McCain's role model...a complete liar and self centered manipulating phony? Rather than use his new found fame to promote a cause he "believes" in he tries to use it to get a record contract(or anything else that will maybe make him some money).
Selfish, self centered moron...so much like McCain they could be brothers...no wait...McCain's brother is worse...an adult spoiled brat, using emergency systems to see if he can get through traffic better. Can these people be any more despicable and embarrassing?

Way to go Josh. Put your child in a halloween costume that the racist right will claim is an Obama costume.
I voted yesterday and waited 25 min in line in MO. When will thuis nation conclude that we are too big to all vote on one day. Voting should be the first week in November which decreases lines and waiting plus gives voters a chance to make changes on their registrations if needed. In fact registered voters could be assigned days to vote according to the alphabet and last name. We are smart enough to make voting less hectic and more easily accountable.
Now. I'm sick of all this reach across the isle crap and "bipartisanship" idiocy. With republican obstructionism dominating the senate the past 2yrs for purely political reasons we need a purely dominate partisanship from the democrats. Quit trying to pacify the very goobers who brought on our current economic and foreign policy disaster, who have stood without compromise for the very wealthy corporatocracy we find ourselves in. We are asking the democrats to bail us out of what the republicans have unanimously brought upon us and we sure as hell don't need any of them to continue to hamper our healing and constitutional restoration. Stop "honoring" McCain's service or I'll begin to believe you're in cahoots with him. For once I would like to hear our dem leaders tell it like it is and admit we've been had by these republican cons. Their party leaders should be in prison and the vileness of the current McCain/Palin infamy deserves absolutely no respect or honor and should be treated like gansterism. Dems need to admit the truth and say the country is so done with that contemptible party that hopefully they will never hold office again for yet another attempt to wreck our nation. Those rare good people republicans need to form another party or reform their current party to exclude the brownshirt nazis.
