Election Central Morning Roundup
Poll: Ayers Not A Legitimate Campaign Issue, Palin's Selection Bad For McCain
A new ABC News/Washington Post poll contains two particularly bad numbers for John McCain. First, 60% of likely voters said they do not think Bill Ayers is a legitimate campaign issue, an indication that his campaigns attacks against Barack Obama simply haven't been working. Second, a full majority of likely voters, at 52%, say the selection of Sarah Palin makes them less confident in John McCain's judgement, compared to only 38% who say it makes them more confident.
Obama In Florida Today, Alongside Hillary Clinton
Barack Obama is campaigning in Florida today, with a 12:40 p.m. ET rally in Tampa followed by a 6 p.m. ET rally in Orlando, the latter of which will feature a special guest: Hillary Clinton. Joe Biden does not have any public events today.
McCain In Missouri, Palin In Colorado, Cindy In Pennsylvania
John McCain is campaigning in Missouri today, with a rally at 11 a.m. ET today in St. Charles, a 2:25 p.m. ET rally in Columbia, and a 5:45 p.m. rally in Belton. Sarah Palin is campaigning in Colorado, with an 11 a.m. ET rally in Colorado Springs, a 3:15 p.m. ET rally in Loveland and a 9 p.m. ET rally in Grand Junction. Cindy McCain is swinging through Pennsylvania, a state where the poll data suggests John McCain doesn't have much of a shot at this point, with a 10 a.m. ET rally in Philadelphia and a 3:30 p.m. ET rally in Yardley.
Hillary Going On Big Campaign Swing For Obama
Hillary Clinton will be spending the week campaigning across the country for Barack Obama. Today she'll be touring Florida, with a 12 p.m. ET rally in Fort Lauderdale, a 2:30 p.m. ET rally in West Palm Beach, and finally the joint rally with Obama at 6 p.m. ET in Orlando.
Palin: Yelling "Kill Him" At Rallies Is Unacceptable -- But "Palling Around With Terrorists" Is Okay
Sarah Palin told David Brody that she has not heard anyone yelling "kill him" or other incitements of violence against Barack Obama at her rallies, from her position on stage. "If I ever were to hear that standing up there at the podium with the mic, I would call 'em out on that, and I would tell these people, no, that's unacceptable," Palin said. However, she did stand by her statements that Barack Obama "pals around with terrorists."
Poll: Close Race In Montana
A new Research 2000 poll shows a close race for Montana's three electoral votes, with 49% for McCain, 45% for Obama, with a ±4.5% margin of error. A month ago, McCain had a 52%-39% lead.
Palin: We Shouldn't Experiment With Socialism
Sarah Palin derided Barack Obama's and Joe Biden's tax policies yesterday, telling a rally in New Mexico, "Friends, now is no time to experiment with socialism." Note: Sarah Palin is the governor of a state that practices collective ownership of oil and other natural resources, and equally distributes the state's cut of the revenues to every citizen.

Here in the heart of Bucks County (Philly burb, just turned blue by the slightest of margins) there is virtually no McCain ground game. No McCain office, and the local GOP headquarters has lots of signs on the lawn, but no signs of life.
By contrast, the Obama HQ across the street is overflowing with volunteers coming and going, making cell phone calls inside and out, morning, noon and night.
If McCain pulled out, I doubt anyone would even notice!

During the primaries, I felt strongly that the type of campaign Hillary ran was beneath contempt. But now I have to admit two things: 1) McShame has made her primary campaign seem like a model of high-mindedness by comparison; and 2) She is going above and beyond the call in the amount of campaigning she is doing for Obama. I can't recall a defeated primary candidate doing this much for a nominee (though this may be reflection of a bad memory). But credit where credit is due.

McCain yesterday was saying his polling shows a McCain surge. The fact he's still going to PA doesn't surprise me a bit. I'm sure Schmidt is "sending" "emails" to John with "new polling info" showing a McCain "surge." I won't be surprised if, like Derick Zoolander, McCain is giving an acceptance speech on Nov. 4 even when he loses.

If the St Louis Rally is any indication, every Democrat within range was on before Obama. They had a chance to get media coverage and rev up the crowd to vote for them and to vote for Obama.
One speaker was our Dem Secy of State who clearly went through the ins and outs of voting--only one example is that straight party voting has been eliminated and to vote for everyone with a D. Nixon, the Dem candidate for governor, urged folks to not let anyone in line leave the line but to encourage them to stay and vote.
The very last piece is Obama entering, shaking hands and waving, then onto the stand for the speech, and then last off the stands shaking hands and waving.
Is this enough for down ticket here in Missouri? Yes, IMHO, it is.

Stewie makes the comment "Hey Brian, the Germans are making weapons of mass destruction how come the United States doesn't invade them, kill all the Nazis and restore Democracy?" To which Brian says "Because there's no oil here?"
A bit later, they shanghai some Nazi soldiers and commandeer the uniforms. Stewie puts the jacket on and says "That's odd there seems to be something stuck on here" he turns the lapel over to reveal (wait for it) a McCain/Palin pin!

With regards to this 'socialism' attack, I just want to know when is someone going to smash that line of attack with the facts?
When are they going to talk about how the government subsidizes farmers, housing and education...why aren't those folks eating at the trough for these 'government handouts' considering that 'welfare' or socialism?
How about why is it Ok for us to bailout banks, auto makers and airlines but all of a sudden when it comes time to 'distribute the wealth' to the actual folks PAYINg the taxes...it is 'socialism'?
Everyone at the top can be 'rescued' by the American taxpayer but when it comes time for the middle class to receive 'tax relief' both in the form of tax cuts and taxes used to prevent foreclosures for the suffering homeowneers...then it is socialim
It seems to me that as long as tax dollars from hard working Americans are used for corporate bailouts...it is still capitalism...but when those same tax dollars are used to shore up social security, medicare or student loans and mortgages then it is socialism?
Someone needs to be pushing back on this and pushing back HARD.
There is significant evidence that trickle down doesn't work when tax dollars are trickled UP so it is time for trickle up where tax dollars are trickled DOWN...as an ECONOMIC STIMULUS.
I am sick and tired of everyone but the middle class being able to receive a tax bailout and it still is called capitalism!!
We have been spreading the wealth to the corporations, banks and financial industry it is time to spread the wealth to the middle class.

Barack could simply deride their attacks and make a sly connection to that common oil ownership and that nifty royalty check every Alaskan gets. Not deriding THAT, of course, but I'm sure he could work that in...
But, I've tried to "reason" with wingnuts and even moderate Repugs in the past and "socialism" is just one of those terms that sends them into paroxysms of irrational thought.

if only we could have an honest debate in this country about which economic policies work and which economic policies don't work and about about what the actual effects of various economic policies are... that we can't seem to have that conversation is the primary problem with the economy.
instead we have to go through this false dilemma between socialism (which we already have in this country and it works quite well) and free enterprise (which we will always have in this country because it too works quite well).
the truth is everyone who isn't completely batshit knows we have a mixed economy and that a mixed economy works perfectly well when managed properly.
mccain-palin and the rnc want voters to believe that warren buffet and colin powell are marxists. the news media ought to be lambasting this nonsense. bachman's tweety tirade is the red flag here (pardon the pun). take heed.

Way back in August (seems like 100 years ago), David Leonhardt wrote a front-page NYT Magazine article about "Obamanomics" that does a great job of explaining Obama's ideology and where it comes from. Leonhardt says "Depending on how you look at it, he is both more left-wing and more right-wing than many people realize." It's a fascinating read.

Word associations, subliminal messaging, psychological teasing-- these things are pretty much the sole purpose of political ad campaigns, Democratic no less than Republican. So what's the big deal? And by the way, "Pavlovian" does not equal "scared of words," as you inadvertently suggest. Pavlov's famous dog, you remember, was not responding to words but to the sound of a bell. And the bell induced a positive association in the canine's brain, not a negative one. The premise of modern mass advertising is that we all have our bells, or buttons, take your pick. That's the scary part of democracy: the extent to which our "decisions" can actually be made for us by manipulative others. Beware!

Palin further plans her future beyond the current campaign. As you could see on Saturday night, where she could barely restrain herself from objecting to the "pageant walk" segment (Watch carefully; Biography, "Sarah": Sarah was always a stubborn girl), she ultimately can't prevent herself from going her own way.

McCain's Campaign is still focusing on the "Alabama T" in Pennsylvania. They can't leave there, it's symbolic if nothing else.
I'm surprised McCain is going to Missouri without Palin given his crowds will be compared to Obama's 175000 people this past weekend.
McCain has $47M to start October, probably spend about half that so far this month, so has $23M for the final two weeks, whereas Bloomberg has Obama spending $35M per week at this stage.

Gov Palin needs a history lesson. The "experiment" was performed shortly after the 16 amendment was passed, and a progressive income tax was implemented. She seems to think that a progressive income tax is "socialism". She needs a lesson.
