Election Central Morning Roundup

Obama Ad: McCain Will Tax Your Health Benefits And Cut Medicare
The Obama campaign has another TV ad in targeted states, warning voters that their health benefits will be taxed under John McCain's plan and he'll cut Medicare too, in an effort to both court older voters and to neutralize the tax issue by turning it right back on the GOP:

"John McCain: Taxing health benefits, cutting Medicare," the announcer says. "We can't afford John McCain."

Hillary On Fox News: Dems Have To "Take Them On"
Josh Orton of MyDD reports that on a conference call with bloggers late yesterday, Hillary Clinton urged Democrats to go on Fox News, rather than boycott them: "I don't think we benefit from ignoring the reality that they're there," she said. "We have to try to take them on and do so in an effective manner." More from Hilllary here.

Obama In Virginia, Biden In New Mexico And Nevada
Barack Obama is holding a 12:30 p.m. ET rally in Roanoke, Virginia. Joe Biden is campaigning out West, with a 3:30 p.m. ET rally in Mesilla, New Mexico, and a rally later tonight in Henderson, Nevada.

McCain In Florida, Palin In Ohio And Indiana
John McCain is holding a 1:15 p.m. rally in Miami, Florida, and a 6 p.m. ET rally in Melbourne, Florida. Sarah Palin is holding an 11:30 a.m. ET rally in West Chester, Ohio, and a 5:30 p.m. ET rally in Noblesville, Indiana.

McCain Gets Grilled On Letterman
John McCain appeared last night on the David Letterman show, hoping to patch things up after he stood Dave up a few weeks ago. Instead, he was asked a series of tough questions about Sarah Palin's qualifications, and whether the logic of his accusations against Barack Obama regarding Bill Ayers could extend to McCain's own associations with G. Gordon Liddy.

Polls: Obama Ahead In Missouri, Tied In Ohio
A new Rasmussen poll in Missouri gives Barack Obama a 52%-46% in this perennial swing state, where he trailed in the polls until just recently, up from a 50%-47% lead in Rasmussen's polling a few days ago. Rasmussen also has Obama and McCain tied 49%-49% in Ohio, not significantly different from a 49%-47% Obama lead a few days ago.

Palin To Appear On Saturday Night Live
Sarah Palin will be appearing tomorrow on Saturday Night Live, just to show that she's a good sport about the way they've lampooned her over the past month and a half. It's not known yet whether Tina Fey will also be on the show -- or for that matter, whether anybody will be able to tell the difference.

Eric - can you guys please be aware that this new server works worse than old one? No one is here yet this morning - no traffic and the server isn't responding. I don't know - is this a bug or a permanent feature? It's been like this all week - nothing posts like it's supposed to -

user-pic

They have no idea how frustrating this is.

. . . THIS is a bug

Palin Attacks Obama for Attending the Alfred E. Smith Dinner
http://satiricalpolitical.com/?p=4081

user-pic

Colin Powell will be on Meet the Press on Sunday. Will he endorse Obama then?

user-pic

It would seem odd for him to make an appearance but not endorse. The Bush administration has tarnished his image. Stands to reason he'd like to drive a nail in McCain's coffin.

http://pufferfish.typepad.com/

user-pic

It would be the nail in the coffin for McCain - if Powell comes out for Obama. Why are we so sure that he will endorse Obama?

user-pic

The only safer endorsement is the one after election day. Doesn't take much to endorse Obama now. I like Powell. To me, it sounds like he genuinely got bamboozled by Bush/Cheney. I would hold him in higher regard if he had endorsed Obama a long time ago.

user-pic

One point that was made on Morning Joe that I think is valid was it consume a newscycle. Given how few days left before the election, everyday that Obama wins the positive spin cycle, is another day McCain can't get his message out through the media.

user-pic

Absolutely. Obama has been very good at rolling out good news. A Powell endorsement combined with announcing his September money haul early next week would dominate the news; he has to do that by th 20th.

Powell endorsing Obama seems to be the only option. CW is that he doesn't have any interest in McCain. So it's Obama or nothing.

user-pic

Possibly. But I think a lot of people give Powell as much credit as my pet rabbit, zilch. I don't care what he has to say.

user-pic

Colin Powell is many things, but above all he is a Good Soldier. On balance I respect the guy, but this is not a man who rocks the boat. I'd be very very surprised if he deviated from that lifelong pattern of deferring to the existing power structure, whether it be the Pentagon brass who wanted a "nothing to see here, move along" report on My Lai or the Cheneyist neocons in the Bush admin who used him as their patsy. Endorsing Obama would go a long way toward redeeming the worst consequences of that deference. A very long way. But I really don't think he has it in him to do that kind of thing at this late date.

user-pic

You know what I've been seeing all over this last week? Signs and bumper stickers with the Hispanic that supporters use: Obamanos!

They are everywhere all of a sudden. New Mexico is Obama's.

user-pic

Tena - PBS Newshour has been doing a series on New Mexico this week. Have you seen it? Is it on point?

user-pic

I haven't seen it. I only live here part time so I may not be the best person to judge.

I hadn't seen Obamanos! signs yet until last week - they are everywhere and cars are covered with Obamanos! stickers - all of a sudden.

user-pic

I saw one last week in Espanola,NM and laughed outloud. I wonder who thought to do the sign?

If only we could stop the crazies from painting swastikas on Obama signs in ABQ....

user-pic

On AirAmerica there is a program called "Clout" with Richard Greene, he has a regular guest caller named Matteo (sp?).
Anyway, this guy is one of the ones responsible for the Obamanos movement. Awesome stuff.

Georgia Georiga Georiga Georiga Georiga

A New Posting by Pia Sawhney, Posted October 16, 2008 | 04:46 PM (EST) stated:

"Voting has begun again in the state of Georgia and one white voter, based in Atlanta, revealed his experience trying for an early shot at the ballot box on Tuesday, "A long line folded itself three times in a relatively hot October sun, shortly before lunch-time. Perhaps a dozen people couldn't stick it out -- they left before getting to the front of the line... Every one of those who gave up the effort was white."
A few weeks ago, Georgian officials asked the Justice Department to check social security numbers for 2 million new voters, a request more ambitious than any other state (note Georgia has just 9 million people). Rep. John Lewis of the state's 5th Congressional district, in which over half the constituents are black, made a plea to his state's voters on Monday."

Obama needs to Campaign "Hard in Georgia", like he Never Campaigned there Before...

user-pic

Sorry, not gonna happen...I guess y'all could try this, http://www.walb.com/Global/story.asp?s=9177991 , down here.

user-pic

OMG! You've uncovered Obama's secret plan to steal the election.!!!!

Where's all your outrage for illegally purged voter rolls? Where's all your outrage about the 2002 phone jamming scandal?

from 2002 to 2005, only twenty people in the entire United States of America were found guilty of voting while ineligible and only five of voting more than once. By contrast, consider the lede on this story, published a week ago today:

Tens of thousands of eligible voters in at least six swing states have been removed from the rolls or have been blocked from registering in ways that appear to violate federal law, according to a review of state records and Social Security data by The New York Times.

http://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/hendrikhertzberg/2008/10/voter-fraud-fra.html

user-pic

If you are purged, you can cast a provisional ballot. If it's proved your purge was wrongful you vote counts...the disabled guy doesn't get his back...but hey, it doesn't matter as long as the vote counts for Obama, right?

user-pic

Yes, you're right. That makes it all better. Making people jump through hoops to vote surely doesn't suppress voter turnout. Get a grip.

You've got ONE example which has yet to even be proven. The ACORN "controversy" doesn't even involve voter fraud but yet McCain insists it's destroying democracy in this country. I find that rich coming from a guy who won't allow the press to speak to his VP nominee.

Every 4 years it's the same song and dance about voter fraud but yet the statistics don't back up the claims. Keep trying, though. The more time you spend on this, the less time you guys have to talk about the issues.

user-pic

"Every 4 years it's the same song and dance about voter fraud but yet the statistics don't back up the claims."
Then why are there people convicted every year? Why does ACORN continue the same practice that leads to the same outcome every year? Why is it ALWAYS the Democrats that these fraudulent registrations are submitted for? Why are Democrats opposed to showing proper ID to vote?

user-pic

Me, my wife, my rabbit Bullet, and my guinea-pig Skunky are all voting Obama this year. (Though for some reason my g-pig wants to vote for Pearce for NM Senator instead of Udall--I've told her that I'll stop giving her carrots, but she's holding firm.)

Ok, voter fraud does happen, but normally in small doses. It seems to me that the ACORN buisiness plan was set up poorly and can reward fraud, so that's a problem. But seriously, where has a significant fraud occurred? To my knowledge, it's normally just a handful of overzealous idiots doing it.

user-pic

Gee, voting is just a fundamental right; why shouldn't we apply a "guilty until proven innocent" standard to it? I mean, in free democratic governments around the world, government officials routinely find an excuse to interfere with voting by groups who just happen to oppose them.

No, wait, that's repressive authoritarian governments! My bad.

user-pic

"voting is just a fundamental right"
Last time I checked the Constitution read: "Each State shall appoint, in such Manner as the Legislature thereof may direct, a Number of Electors..." That says a state can require ID.

user-pic

Redshift didn't specifically mention ids. There are plenty of ways to suppress voter turnout. Nice try to change the subject, though.

user-pic
from 2002 to 2005, only twenty people in the entire United States of America were found guilty of voting while ineligible and only five of voting more than once.

Do I think statistics like that are affecting the outcomes of elections? Hardly. Do I think any level of voter fraud is acceptable? No.

The ACORN pay for register thing is stupid and people should have foreseen that some might try and abuse the system. By law, however, ACORN must submit every registration form...even if they think it is fraudulent. Once again, though, remember that registration fraud is not VOTER FRAUD. Please read the link to the New Yorker to put it in perspective.

How in the world do you know that it's ALWAYS the Dems that these voter registration forms are for? A lot of states don't even allow party affiliation. That's just a ridiculous statement.

You guys got what you wanted here in GA this year with the voter id law, so what are you worried about? Unless Micky Mouse has a valid state i.d., he won't be allowed to vote.

user-pic

test

user-pic

Some kossacks are freaking out on this ACORN thingy. Any of you guys believe that this is a serious issue ?

user-pic

Here's the way I understand it. You've got an organization that helps register voters. You've got some bad apples out there that are cheating to meet their quotas.

It would be like calling the entire Bank of America corrupt because you have some crooked tellers stealing peoples money and spending it on hookers or something.

The game the Republicans now are playing the spin of perception game. If everyone starts talking about it being a big issue, it's a big issue. If most major news organizations ignore it, then they'll move to something else like go back to Obama's birth cert or something.

user-pic

No, no, no...poor example with bad tellers, since folks actually lose something & the bank loses as well.

A better analogy is that you have all these folks sign up to be on a team roster, by a Moms for Little League group...but then on the day of the game none of those players actually show up. So, if the object was to have more teams in the league you don't get more teams because there weren't enough 'real' players signed up.

No one is hurt in this scenario, the league simply does not expand as much as they wanted to.

Same thing with ACORN, the pool of actual voters does not expand, even though they have a huge paper trail of 'registered' voters.

Obama needs to expand the pool of voters in order to win and that was the real goal.

user-pic

I do. They are going to use it as an excuse to challenge hundreds of thousands of voters, primarily at African American precints in order to grind voting to a halt and disenfranchise blacks, and if Obama wins it will be used to justify to 1/3 of the nation that makes up the wacked out right that Obama is not a ligitimate President and that therefore they can do anything, and I do mean anything, necessary in light of that.

user-pic

You are dead right.

What the GOP wants to do is 'taint' the election. This is why the media is at fault for not forcefully noting the difference in registering to vote and actual voter fraud.

Minorities are use to being hassled, whether it is DWB or just loitering..typically as a group being harassed goes with the culture.

This election will prove the mettle of blacks which is why many, many, many folks are voting early so they do not have to deal with cops being at poll precincts intimidating voters.

The most frequent way blacks are disenfranchised is that not enough polls are placed in their precincts resulting in exceptionally long voting lines and the polls closing early.

The true use of numerous ACORN registration is in the total number of registered voters being sufficient to have higher magnitude of vote tallies per precinct!

user-pic

I posted this link on an earlier thread. It's a good overview of the "controversy":

http://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/hendrikhertzberg/2008/10/voter-fraud-fra.html

user-pic

Thanks Scat. Hope the fracking msm is as truthful as The New Yorker.

user-pic

Excellent article, thanks! Short, concise, clear, explains the whole thing in everyday language. I'll be passing it around.

Yes, this is serious because of the groundwork it lays and needs to be stomped on at every opportunity or we will watch as the election gets stolen yet again.

McCain Gets Grilled On Letterman

Letterman was channeling Jon Stewart last night, and showing how most of the mainstream media are pathetic excuses for journalists. How is it that a guy like Letterman can ask the simple, logical question about McShame's ties to Liddy but not a single, so-called journalist has ever done the same?

user-pic

Letterman was not in the mood to let him off the hook - Dave was still mad or so he seemed.

user-pic

Letterman's definitely an ornery guy and it was quite clear he was pissed. He's also not a guy who's usually comfortable getting into serious political discussions so it was fascinating to see him standing up to McCain on everything -- on Palin's incompetence, on McShame's crocodile tears about John Lewis, on Ayers, etc.

user-pic

I guess it's not the fool being the only one who can tell the truth thing. It was pretty cool seeing Dave asking questions that no one else has. But I think his anger had little to do with it--he didn't come across to me as pissed, just earnest. He actually researched (or, my wife corrected me last night, had interns research) a lot and came across far more versed than any interviewer I've seen.

Like you said, Moose, it would have been great for so-called real journalists to actually have tried asking real questions. Has Dave grilled Obama too? If he has, I'd like to see it.

user-pic

Hillary is an idiot if she thinks that about Fox. One of the best things to come out of this cycle is the beatback against the party from the netroots and others to Fox News. They should be totally delegitimized.

user-pic

I agree with you. My impression is that Murdoch's sucking up to her paid off for him.

user-pic

I saw a great "THAT ONE for President" sign draped over an overpass on the I66 HOV lanes inside the beltway near D.C. the other day. Many of the overpasses have some nice homemade Obama signs. It's getting exciting.

user-pic

O I love it!

Sounds like the Freeway Blogger - I wonder what happened to him? Is that site still up? I haven't heard anything from or about freeway blogging for a year -

user-pic

Obama is outperforming Kerry in most of the bellwether counties, but underperforming in Franklin County, OH. Between that and the Rasmussen poll, I wouldn't be surprised if OH stayed red. Not that it will matter.

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1008/14657.html

user-pic

Interesting that Obama may have an easier time winning Missouri than Ohio. It may have to do with the fact that Ohio is ground zero for all those negative attack ads by the GOP and 527s while Missouri is less so. As a result, the Missourians may be exposed to less GOP shit.

user-pic

I kept wondering why Obama didn't turn to McCain the other night and say, quietly, "People might be interested in your friendship with convicted felon G. Gordon Liddy." I guess Obama has decided that he's not going to go down that road, but it's nice to have Letterman make the connection. I wonder if anybody in the MSM will pick it up.

user-pic

Obama is squeaky clean compared to McCain. It is frustrating that the MSM has not gone after McCain for his part in the Keating Five scandal. I'm surprised to see the MSM report anything negative about the Republican party. I think the galactically stupid Palin is hard to overlook and draws more attention than McCain. Plus, with McCains POW status I believe it keeps the media from dogging him quite so much.
John Cleese had a great statement about Palin. Sums her up pretty damn well.

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1008/14657.html

user-pic

I am from Ohio and I have all along thought that he is not going to take Ohio.

user-pic

Question that I'd never thought about till this election cycle: why is MI so reliably blue and OH red? I know we hate each other over football, but otherwise aren't the demographics pretty much the same? Of course, I haven't spent anytime in the south or southeastern part of the state, and that may be the difference. Just curious.

user-pic

I hate Ohio. I worked there on a congressional campaign in the summer of 2004. It's a shitty state, and Texas is ten times better than Ohio in comparison.

user-pic

Obama doesn't need to win Ohio. It would be nice but it's time to really focus on CO, VA, NC. As long as he has all the Kerry states and holds IA & NM he just needs one of those three to win. Screw Ohio. He should still run ads there and support his ground troops but why waste time visiting a state he's more likely to lose?

user-pic
Obama doesn't need to win Ohio.

No. I want Ohio too. I'm not over 2004. Ohio needs to be redeemed.

user-pic

I love how fast the Joe the Plumber cartoon went into the toilet. Even the feeble MSM were able to figure out how bogus it was. I think it turned into a plus for Barack.

user-pic

I'm guessing Sarah Palin was in charge of vetting him. "Say it ain't so, Joe!"

user-pic

Is Joe the Plumber really Jeff Gannon (nee James Guckert)?

McCain isn't telling us the whole truth, my friends.

user-pic

Ohio will be tough. Obama team thinks that Colorado and Virginia will be a lot easier. I actually think that Florida will be easier than Ohio.

user-pic

I want a whomping landslide as much as anyone, but I have to admit there's a part of me that wouldn't mind seeing every current 'battleground' state go Obama except for Ohio. Let Ohio vote for the loser this time, in spectacular fashion. It would finally disabuse the major networks and maybe even future candidates from investing 1/3 to 1/2 of their campaigning in the same overexposed and underappreciative region of the country.

I am so fucking sick of Ohio being the focus of attention every four years. I hate seeing the usual mushy-brained uncommitted OHIO voter being used as the arbiter of debate success or failure on CNN with their squiggly-line graphs. Seriously, WTF - there are other states out here, and yes, I happen to live in one of them.

user-pic

As someone who used to live in FL, I would like to see FL and OH go to McCain. Diebold hands both states to the GOP...and Obama still wins. Mayhap then we can be concerned about the rest of the nation, rather than the race being consumed by the prevarications of a handful of 'battleground' states. On a less altruistic note, it would also allow my elderly parents to keep their phone on during the election season (average of 5 robocalls/day).

user-pic

I feel the same way about New Hampshire and Iowa: why the hell should they have the uncontested right to be "first in the nation" in the primaries? Their populations are in no way typical of American society today. Why should their homogenetic, rural, agrarian voters shape the race from the get-go? It's a shame that the parties won't stand up to them.

user-pic

In re Palin being on SNL tomorrow...Tina Fey will be on Letterman tonight. So many possibilities for inspired comedy suggest themselves...

Are we really sure they are not identical twins?

user-pic

Well I am. Tina Fey is legitimately beautiful. Sarah Palin is not.

Tina Fey is smart as shit. Sarah Palin is not.

Tina Fey is extraordinarily talented. Sarah Palin is not.

etc. etc. etc.

user-pic

Governor, I've watched Tina Fey, I've laughed with her. (I feel as though) Tina Fey is a frind of mine. Governor, you're no Tina Fey

user-pic

"friEnd." It really works better without the typos. (Or it doesn't work less without the typos, as the case may be.)

user-pic

lol

Indeed.

user-pic

Those Missouri results warm my heart, but I am not worried about those Ohio results. Buckeye has promised us that his state is going for Obama, and I am confident that he will be vindicated in that prediction.

user-pic

Letterman previously told his audience that the road to the White House goes through him. Maybe that's why he decided to push McCain on questions that haven't been asked by reporters, e.g. Gordon Liddy and Palin's lack of qualifications. We owe a big one to Letterman.

user-pic

If Letterman had wanted to push McCain on Palin he should have read aloud from the report on Troopergate and said she asked everyone to read the report. "Now where exactly, Senator, does she get the statement that she broke no laws or committed no unethical acts?" The he should ahve handed the report to him.

user-pic

Sure enough -- Letterman could have gone a lot further, but then again he's not a political reporter. It would be a pleasant surprise if the real reporters, whose job is to ask the tough questions, will be shamed by Letterman into doing their job before this election is over.

user-pic

And also the crew from The View, sans Wingnut Barbie.

Sorry to hijack the thread temporarily, but I want to say that it's a pleasure reading the comments from folks here at TPM. I was reading comments from a previous thread (re: the Obama commercial in FL that referenced the space program) and I was absolutely engrossed in the the conversation about the challenges of those who work in basic research, NASA, etc. Though I always knew I'd be more interested in advocacy, I am absolutely fascinated with science and truly appreciate the talent and intellect of folks who perform the research and share what they learn with the rest of us.

Since I think that thread is pretty exhausted, I just wanted to share it with you here.

Now back to discussion of the current topic, already in progress.

user-pic

During Obama's great standup routine last night at the Al Smith dinner (you can see it at the Jed Report) he jokes that he was born on Krypton. I'm wondering how long before the Repubs start running robocalls saying Obama admits he wasn't born in the US?

user-pic

They were both hillarious last night...

user-pic

Jeez, this server is slower than Fred Thompson on quaaludes.

user-pic

The Washington Post endorses Obama.

user-pic

To see real videos of real women discussing their reactions to Sarah Palin
& the misuse of gender issues in this year's presidential race,
please take a look at the following blog:

www.speakoutonpalin.blogspot.com

user-pic

McCain needs to be called out for his Ayers double talk. Whenever asked he says he doesn't really care, but his whole campaign is based around it now - with mailers now tying Ayers to Obama.

I mean on Letterman last night he tries to dance around it, and when pressed about Palin's pluralized "terrorists" he simply says "things are said during a campaign..."

user-pic

While I agree in part with your premise, ask yourself a simple question. If you were running for President right now, who would you rahter not have yourself associated with. William Ayres or George W. Bush?

user-pic

In San Bernardino, CA the Chaffey Community Republican Women Newsletter depicted Barack Obama with old racial stereotypes of Fried Chicken, Ribs, Kool-Aid, and Watermelon...all on a $10. Food Stamp.

In Ohio, McCain supporters said:

“I’m afraid if he wins, the blacks will take over. He’s not a Christian! This is a Christian nation! What is our country gonna end up like?”

“When you got a Negra running for president, you need a first stringer. He’s definitely a second stringer.”

At this week's debate, John McCain made a point to say how proud he is of his supporters and all those who attend his rallies. So a camera crew went to a recent McCain-Palin rally in Ohio, not to film the candidates, but to capture the mood and personality of the rally attendees and supporters John McCain is so proud of. You will be shocked and amazed at some of the comments, and just where we are as a nation when it comes to race.

CHECK OUT "RACE WITHIN THE RACE" VIDEO:

user-pic

Clearly, inbreeding at it's best. We will never see the end of these folks. I have several relatives that routinely quote the Bible as reference when they state that "Blacks are inferior," etc, etc. People like this come from a long history of racism and were taught to hate blacks. It's hard to shake this behavior when you were raised by idiots. I have a very short test when it comes to deciding whether or not a candidate or ordinary person has any brains whatsoever.....Please say nuclear. Ok, nukular. Yep, you're an idiot. Bush and Palin sittin' in a tree............inbreeding!

user-pic

This country is moving forward and there is nothing these hateful people can do about it. That's what scares them the most.

user-pic

I'm appalled that this national disgrace of immoral hatred and race-bating will be on SNL. I, for one, will not be watching and will most likely boycott the show for the rest of its television life. Shame on Lorne Micheals.
