Election Central Morning Roundup
New Obama Ad: McCain May Not Be Bush, But He Sure Votes With Him
The Obama campaign already has this new TV ad set to air on national cable, taking on John McCain for his declaration at the debate last night that he's not President Bush:
"You may not be George Bush," the announcer says, speaking in the most literal sense of McCain and Bush being two separate people. This is then followed by footage of what really counts: McCain boasting during the primaries that he's voted with Bush over 90% of the time.
Obama In New Hampshire And New York, Michelle In Pennsylvania
Barack Obama is holding a 10 a.m. ET event in Londonderry, New Hampshire, and will then head to New York City for the Al Smith Dinner. Michelle is holding a rally in Pittsburgh at 10 a.m. ET. Joe Biden is off the campaign trail today, but will appear on Jay Leno tonight.
McCain In Pennsylvania And New York, Palin In Maine And North Carolina
John McCain is holding a rally at 1 p.m. ET today in Downingtown, Pennsylvania, and will then head to New York for the Al Smith Dinner -- and a taping of the David Letterman show, in an effort patch things up after he ditched Dave last month. Sarah Palin will hold a rally at 10 a.m. ET in Bangor, Maine, in the hopes of taking away one electoral vote in a state that splits their votes by Congressional districts. Palin will then head to North Carolina, for a 3:15 p.m. ET rally in Elon.
Obama And McCain Meeting Again Tonight In New York
Barack Obama and John McCain will both be attending tonight's Alfred E. Smith Dinner in New York, an annual charity event held by the New York Archdiocese and a frequent stop for politicians. They will both speak at the dinner, starting at about 6:30 p.m. ET.
AP: Campaign Now Concentrated In Red States
The Associated Press reports that the candidates will now be focused entirely on swing states now that the debates are over -- in particular, swing states that voted for President Bush last time. McCain has been forced by recent polls to more vigorously defend states like Virginia, Colorado and Florida while Obama will be chasing GOP-leaning states like Missouri over the next few days.
Joe The Plumber Seems To Like McCain
Joe Wurzelbacher, aka "Joe The Plumber," told Katie Couric last night that John McCain delivered a solid performance and that he still doesn't know where Barack Obama stands. He particularly didn't like Obama on taxes. "But, you know, question, so he's going to do that now (raise taxes) for people who make $250,000 a year. When's he going to decide that $100,000 is too much, you know? I mean, you're on a slippery slope here. "

Meh, we all knew JTP liked McC.

It's tryly a wonder to watch how Barack ropes that McDope, dances circles around him, gently laughs at and even encourages his air punches, and then Barack just turns around and finally lands a punch such as this knockout ad. It is very much a thing of beauty.

You have to step back and just acknowledge the Obama campaign.
This Mccain footage in the commercial has been out there for months but Obama held back using it into the very end knowing at some point McCain was really going to start to try to seperate himself from Bush.
Just a brilliant ad

I was watching the shows last night harp on McCain's snazzy response and I kept thinking, "Yeah that was pretty good, but Obama's response was even better". I'm glad they made this ad . . . it underscores Obama's point perfectly and frankly McCain can't make an ad showing his OPPOSITION to Bush's policies--especially when he's starring in this one.
Good stuff.

So, let me get the wealthy plumber's claim correct: I won't be taxed more under Obama's plan, but I'm afraid he'll raise my taxes anyway, despite any proof.
Oh yeah, *that* doesn't sound like a Republican talking point.
I hope Obama can put out more effective ads about taxation. He was fine on it last night, but I hope he can be more forceful that McCain wants to give the vast majority of Americans *less* of a tax break. I don't think most low info voters know this.
I can't believe that Repubs are going back to this tired crap again.

No, a "tax deduction" lowers your tax...once your tax hits zero there's nothing left to deduct...so if you are at zero and then they hand you a check (or a check that equals more than you paid) that isn't a tax cut.
October 16, 2008 11:27 AM | Reply | Permalink
If you're talking about things like the earned income tax credit, those folks ARE paying taxes. They're paying FICA taxes to the tune of 7.65 percent, and if you're scraping by on $15,000/year (which is just a bit more than minimum wage), that 7.65 percent hurts. If you're living in a metropolitan area, you're probably also paying occupational privilege taxes and higher than average sales taxes - all of which are highly regressive.
The tax credits just balance a little of that out at the very poorest end of our society, and I will have have no problem with them as long as we have so many regressive tax structures in this country.

That's the best Obama ad this cycle for two reasons. First, that line was the best from either candidate last night, and probably all three debates. It was very strong, but as Karl Rove would say, attack your opponent's strength. That great line went from being his strongest to a door opener in 30 seconds. Second, I love the incorporation of the split-screen facial expressions. When all is said and done and people look back on these debates, they'll be talking about McCain's eye-bulges, cackles, grimaces, etc. more than any actual responses or lines. So dismissive, and they make McCain look old and out of touch. Just a superb ad.

I like the ad, and it's cool that they followed up on McCain's "not Bush" comment. But the narrator is awful. He reminds me of SNL's Most Sarcastic Voice in the World of Campaign Ads.

I'm sure I'm not the first to say it nor will I be the last, but I feel compelled to say that the people running Obama's campaign (including Obama of course) are geniuses.
The story of this campaign and the differences between Obama's (steady, controlled, focused, cool, confident) and McCain's (erratic, out of control, unfocused, emotional, desperate) is going to make somebody a very rich author.
October 16, 2008 9:37 AM | Reply | Permalink
It seems clear now that McCain walked right into another trap. It's been out there for a long time, but only now has he stepped in it.
When McCain tries to counter Obama "Bush's 3rd term" argument by saying that he is not actually George Bush - as if there was some dispute - Obama can simply focus the fire on the economic policy itself, where there is no doubt that McCain is following the Bush policies.
This obvious distinction only ends up reinforcing Obama's original point.
Nice work. I especially like the montage of "pained McCain" moments sprinkled throughout the ad.

We do not want to belittle Joe, but, he STILL does not understand Barack's plan??
The here-and-now truth could not be simpler: Under Obama he gets a tax BREAK. Under McCain he does NOT. Rich people and corporations do.
If Joe is fortunate enough to move into the $250k tax bracket, then GOOD for him. That is a fair graduate tax rate that benefits everyone.

Would it make you feel better if Obama jacked it up to $500,000? But then of course, people making $500,001 would feel picked on. And, once you've made it to that level, you wouldn't be getting the tax cut anymore. You'd have to pay taxes at the same level as people did back during the Clinton administration. Wow. How did rich people survive back then. It must have been awful.
Seriously, Joe, you might be one of the Americans that Phil Gramm was talking about. Why don't you stop your goddam whining and start giving a shit about the rest of the country and not just yourself. Bush started with a budget surplus. He's run up a deficit for his entire two terms and it just broke the record. What a coincidence. We just happened to have massive tax cuts for the wealthiest 1% during that time. Could it be? Might there be some connection between a huge loss of revenue for the federal government and a huge increase in debt?
Cry me a fuckin' river, Joe.

Speaking of the Al Smith Dinner:
Oct. 20, 2000 (CBS) The Al Smith dinner, hosted by Archbishop Edward Egan, is a traditional forum for presidential candidates, although in past years, the abortion issue has kept some candidates away.
The event is named for the former New York governor who was the first Roman Catholic ever to be nominated for president.
The presidential candidates came well-armed with jokes, often poking fun at themselves.
Bush gazed around the diamond-studded $800-a-plate crowd and commented on the wealth on display.
"This is an impressive crowd - the haves and the have-mores," quipped the GOP standard-bearer. "Some people call you the elites; I call you my base."

This election is about a lot more than that of just economics. We are at war and everyone should question whether Obama has the integrity and ability to lead this nation at this time. And, would he keep this country safe, or will his affiliations with radicals/terrorist lead to more devastation? In my opinion, I don't believe he has what it takes. Let me explain another connection to a radical/terrorist. In 2006, Obama campaigned for a relative in Kenya, who was running for the Presidency. Obama's cousins name is Raila Odinga. Subsequently, Odinga lost by 230,000 or so votes. He did not accept the loss. So he called for demonstrations by his political supporters who in turn committed ethnic cleansing and genocide. Point blank, this guy tried to subvert the election process and use blackmail until he got what he wanted. Here is a video that gives a good accounting of the events along with photo's as proof of Obama and Odinga campaigning together. And Obama, used U.S. taxpayer money for this and his Senatorial position to help this terrorist. By your "logic," Jeb and G.H.W. Bush are both guilty of war crimes because they're associated with the current War Criminal-In-Chief who should be impeached for deceiving this country into the latest round of War for Profit, Fun, and Glory.

Proof that this "awesome zinger" isn't going to get much traction.

"Joe the plumber" just did an extended interview that I saw on MSNBC. He seemed really scary today. One reporter asked him about his voter registration and he belongs to some type of "independence" fringe party. He doesn't believe in Social Security, and got a little ticked off during the interview as reporters pressed him. A little weird. I wish I had a link, but I am sure one will be up shortly. I am more convinced than ever that he is a "plant" but I am even more convinced that he is from some fringe group. He needs to be exposed!

I seem to recall that the last Republican campaign to rely on plumbers ran in to big trouble with their water gates.

Not only is the guy who fixes toilets for McCain, he may have had his head in one for a while because some Ohioans have looked at the voter rolls and can't find Joe on 'em. For more on this and actual analysis of the debate, go to RealityChex.com at http://www.realitychex.com

Expect to see Joe the Plumber on the campaign trail as a sidekick to Trig the Unaborted Gift from God.
He looks like a Skinhead for McCain (or Anybody But That One).

The focus groups after last night's debate gave a thimbs down to the Joe the Plumber gimmick. Lets hope the media keeps following that rabbit trail.
Meanshile, I suggest we leave Joe alone. If you don't want Michelle Malkin's fleas, don't get in her bed. Next think you'll be scratching while you peek in windows assessing the countertops.

I am not familiar with Malkin as I do not indulge in cable television.
Your metaphors need some work. Whatever it was you were attempting to say, you missed.

Just got home & was informed that Joe the Plumber told Dianne Sawyer this afternoon that, yeah, he was asked by some Republican party somebody to attend that Obama rally and get into a dialogue.
Like the guy didn't already have RINGER written all over him--anybody else seen this?

I must say,
That new ad is a nice rejoinder to the recent McCain line "I ain't Bush"
Especially capped off with the "I voted with Bush 90% clip"
It is kind of sweet justice that all his pandering to the base during the primaries (as evidenced by that clip) left him open to such a clear and non-negative attack.

Great ad Obama campaign. Thanks. I was thinking the same thing. Great to make while McCain's comment will be fresh on people's minds.
How about one wiht McCain being 3 for 3? He never mentioned "middle-class" in any of the 3 debates.

Wasn't G. Gordon Liddy a "plumber" for Nixon?
GOP tradition, I reckon.

So, what's worse?
McSame voting like a Bush clone, or him thinking that's something to brag about?

That's simply just a great f'in ad.
Defuses the whole "I'm not Bush" line from debate, shows several of McCain's weird facial expressions during the debate, uses McCain's own boast against him, and, damn, they got this puppy out there fast.
