Election Central Morning Roundup
Tonight: The Second Presidential Debate
Barack Obama and John McCain are meeting tonight in Nashville, Tennessee, for their second debate. The debate will be conducted in a town-hall format, and will begin at 9 p.m. ET.
Obama Ad: McCain "Out Of Ideas, Out Of Touch"
The Obama campaign has this new ad, set to air on national cable, saying that John McCain is trying to change the subject away from the economy with his smears against Barack Obama:
"He's out of ideas, out of touch, and running out of time," the announcer says. "But with no plan to lift our economy up, John McCain wants to tear Barack Obama down."
McCain Ad: Obama "Hypocritical" On Smear Ads
This new McCain ad, set to air nationally, calls Barack Obama a hypocrite for complaining about misleading TV ads, only to run misleading ads of his own:
"Barack Obama. He promised better," the announcer says. "He lied."
Polls: Obama Up In Battleground States
A new set of CNN polls shows Barack Obama running strong in four key swing states: Obama is up 53%-45% in New Hampshire, 50%-47% in Ohio, 51%-46% in Wisconsin, and is tied with John McCain 49%-49% in North Carolina. The only real bright spot for McCain in this batch is Indiana, where he has a 51%-46% lead.
Michelle Obama In North Carolina, Biden Off The Trail
Michelle Obama will hold a rally today in Jacksonville, North Carolina, set to begin at 1:30 p.m. ET. Joe Biden is still off the campaign trail for today, as his family mourns the death of his mother-in-law.
Palin Touring Florida And North Carolina
Sarah Palin is continuing her tour of the South, with stops today in several Republican stronghold areas within key battleground states. Palin has a 10 a.m. ET rally in Jacksonville, Florida, a 3:30 p.m. ET rally in Pensacola, Florida, and a 7 p.m. ET rally in Greenville, North Carolina.
Hagel's Wife To Formally Endorse Obama
Lilibet Hagel, the wife of GOP Sen. Chuck Hagel, will formally endorse Barack Obama at a press conference in Alexandria, Virginia. On the one hand, it's been a matter of public record that Mrs. Hagel has donated to Obama -- but this will be viewed by many in the media as a sign that Sen. Hagel himself is supporting Obama.
Anti-Obama Author Detained In Kenya
Jerome Corsi, author of the anti-Obama smear book The Obama Nation: Leftist Politics and the Cult of Personality, has been detained by authorities in Kenya as he set out to conduct a book tour there. Authorities there say Corsi does not have a work permit for his tour.

Here's this morning's Sarah Palin Hate Rally Report:

This is really terrifying. Just when it seemed the McShame-Failin campaign's lies had taken American politics to a new low, they've now descended into unthinkable territory. Because what's going on now is that for the first time in history, we have a presidential and vice presidential candidate basically calling out to the crazies to win the election for them at the barrel of a gun.

As a long-time critic of the Obama ad strategy and grudging admire of the McCain ads, I feel like the world has been turned upside down.
The Obama ad is pretty good (although I think they could just run ads of him talking to the camera directly non-stop now and win).
But the McCain ad is horrendous. I've never seen a more out-of-touch ad full of "who cares?" points. I know they're building a character case. But this ad gets to no essential truths about Obama, or even suspected truths (the way the flip-flopper ads did about Kerry).
McLame indeed.

When your campaign is calm, thinking can occur. Along with good policies and good ads. But if your campaign is chaotic, there's no thinking, there's raw, fevered flailing about, no room for policies, and ads that spin your tires deeper into the mire.

Put together with his previous ads attempting to define Obama as a celebrity, an elitist, and inexperienced, the attempt to now brand Obama as a liar merely comes off as more feces flung by an erratic, message-less McCaca.

The difference between the ads can tell the way both candidates will face the debate tonight. Obama will be calm and open to talk about the issues. McCain is a desperate position to change the dynamics of the race and he probably will attack from the start. Of course, the problem of this is that it will do more harm than good: in the middle of the biggest economic crisis in recent memory, the last thing that voters want to hear is vicious personal attacks.
The quotes of McCain's advisers about moving on from the economic issue could be deadly for their aspirations and Obama is seizing the moment by using them. The Medicare cuts quote should be next.
What else you can say about McCain's ads? They're crap, period.
Finally, I'm worried about the language that McCain and Palin have starting to use on their rallys. The least that the US needs right now is more fear, hate and division. ENOUGH!

It's shameful where McCain/Palin are taking this campaign. It will become more obvious as we get closer to election day that their comments are not meant to convince people. They are meant to encite. Judging by the behavior of their audience, the strategy is working. It isn't clear to me yet what this is supposed to accomplish beyond making their campaign appear even more out of touch with mainstream Americans, but then again, I'm not sure that I really want to know.

Both of these "Loser Candidates" are sociopaths, which means narcissists to the max without empathy or conscience. As such, they want to be adored. Now if you're losing.... that's a downer. What to do? Whip up a crowd. Feel the "power" of that deranged behavior of yours and theirs. Stave off the sense of defeat. Through primitive rage and projection of all that is worst in you onto the other side, now viewed as an enemy of monumental proportions.
I honestly think the Vendetta Twins are "feeding" on this seething mass of primitive, chaotic emotion. They have no care for America. Just have to have their daily "fix" for as long as it lasts.

This seems like they are still attempting to shore up the base. If you are riling up supporters with agitprop at your rallies, you're probably not thinking too much about pandering to the center in an effort to win independents. Holtz-Eakin's comments about cutting Medicare and Medicaid confirm this. Lord knows the base hates those free-loaders who use government programs for their intended purpose.
Of course, we could just be witnessing the national implosion of the McCain campaign, and since there is no overriding strategy, people are just saying what's on their minds and hoping it forms some kind of coherent platform.

I'd like to see McCain flame out in the debate tonight, but I'm worried about the format.
It's being held at a Baptist college in a red state, and the questions are going to be picked by Tom Brokaw. Do you think Tom will focus on questions about the economy, or Iraq, or health care? Or will he sift through them to find the ones HE thinks the average "Joe Sixpack" wants to ask. Questions about Ayres? Flag pins? Has Obama really quit smoking?
The town hall format is supposed to allow the voters to ask about what's important to them, but I don't like the idea that Brokaw gets to decide which questions to ask.

Nor I. Obama just has to remain calm and let people know what he plans to do when he takes office.
McCain has to hit one out the ballpark. It seems that they're going on the attack, but that's a bad idea. Unlike the other debates, this audience will let it be known if they disapprove of something, and they will disapprove of either one trying to go on the attack.

The Big O will shine tonight. He already completed a training circuit at the Big Church a few weeks back. So when someone asks, "Is it true you spew green bile and spin your head around 360 degrees?" our hero will respond, "No human being can spin his or her head around. That's an anotomical impossibility. As your president, however, I will be looking in every direction for ways to fix our economy. You're right about the green stuff. Every time I look at the economic statistics I get sick to my stomach. As your president I'm going to get things done that help your families once again look forward to reading the morning headlines. You might remember them, we had a few about 8 years ago."
Or something like that. I am confident in The Big O. I'm still crabby-nervous about the block-the-vote-steal-the-vote cheaters. We are still in the danger zone. Remember, it ain't paranoia when you KNOW they're out to get you! :-)

If authorities would have waited a few more hours to detain Corsi they might have caught him with some underage boys but being such a big asshole can overwhelm authorities forcing them to detain that person faster.
Palin shows what a good uniter she'd be with her divisive comments just short of sedition. She's trash and has set about rabble rousing rather than offering a plan to deal with our nation's current crises. She mistakenly believes that because of a 3000 member crowd that the nation is behind her when in fact there are 30,000 waiting to shout her 3000 down. Encouraging supporters to demean the press and threaten violence?...This from a person wanting to be VP of our nation holding intolerance above rationality? She's rabble rousing, trying to foster a mob mentality. She is ignorance heightened to the level of celebration, enabling the worst of her supporter's natures. She pretends to be just like her supporters just as the very wealthy McCain pretends he's an average factory worker shopper. Palin is too stupid to see that she is exposing her true self as a reckless hypocrite phony and will be lucky to ever hold public office again. She is an insult to the average voter which she assumes is ignorant and easily led. That accounts for only a very small minority as she will learn shortly. I will be forever grateful for Couric accidentally exposing Palin's character during and after her interview. No way to spin the truth because it was sooooo apparent. Palin should not be allowed in Washington as anything other than a tourist.

btw...why are these debates taking place in the south...Mississippi and Tennessee. When has either of these states ever been significantly relative to elections or have a population considered well informed. Besides, we are pretty much past the point where anything will be learned from these debates. I hope they are at least treated like discussions and not smack down wrestling matches.

McCain's new ad was pretty bad with unsupported points. Obama's ad is very effective and undeniably true.
Do we have to make it unanimous to prevent election theft because it's almost there. Obama will win in a landslide if McCain/Palin don't just outright promote assassination of the opposition. Remember the head of the dem party in Arkansas shot to death by an anti-liberal reading right wing pundits. Even though they don't have the conscience, McCain/Palin should feel ashamed of themselves for promoting violence and trying to label their opposition as terrorist treason. They lie regardless of the possible consequences...it is indeed the proper passing of this neocon mentality as they lose power. The public will end up never wanting to see or hear from them again.
