Election Central Morning Roundup

New McCain Ad: Obama "Dangerous" And "Dishonorable" To Our Troops
This new McCain TV ad, set to air nationally, goes after Barack Obama by taking his comments on Afghanistan seriously out of context:

"Who is Barack Obama? He says our troops in Afghanistan are 'just air-raiding villages and killing civilians," the announcer says, splicing in footage of Obama's mangled quote. "How dishonorable." In fact, Obama was talking about the need for more troops in Afghanistan, in order to avoid the situation he was talking about -- a real problem that has been acknowledged by President Bush, no less.

Dem Ticket Off The Trail Today
Barack Obama has no scheduled public events for today, as he is preparing for tomorrow's debate. Joe Biden is also off the trail, due to the passing of his mother-in-law over the weekend.

McCain In New Mexico, Palin In Florida
John McCain is campaigning today in Albuquerque, New Mexico, with a rally set for 2:15 p.m. ET. McCain will then head off to Nashville, Tennessee, ahead of tomorrow's debate, with his arrival scheduled for 7 p.m. ET. Sarah Palin is campaigning today in Clearwater, Florida, with a rally scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. ET.

Palin: Let's Talk About Jeremiah Wright
In an interview with Bill Kristol, Sarah Palin said the campaign and media should be talking more about Jeremiah Wright: "To tell you the truth, Bill, I don't know why that association isn't discussed more, because those were appalling things that that pastor had said about our great country, and to have sat in the pews for 20 years and listened to that -- with, I don't know, a sense of condoning it, I guess, because he didn't get up and leave -- to me, that does say something about character. But, you know, I guess that would be a John McCain call on whether he wants to bring that up."

Albright To Palin: Don't Misquote Me
Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright is taking serious issue with Sarah Palin's misquotation of her at a rally on Saturday, declaring that "There's a place in Hell reserved for women who don't support other women." In fact, Albright pointed out to the Huffington Post, her original quote had absolutely nothing to do with partisan politics, but was about human rights for women across the globe.

L.A. Times Looks At McCain's Naval Aviation Record
In a further sign that a whole lot more dirt is going to be dug up on the candidates before this race is over, the Los Angeles Times reports that McCain's record as a Naval Aviator was marked by recklessness and avoidable accidents -- most notably the time he flew into power lines and caused a blackout in Southern Spain. "In today's military, a lapse in judgment that causes a crash can end a pilot's career," the paper says. "Though standards were looser and crashes more frequent in the 1960s, McCain's record stands out."

So, Palin gets to lead the charge on all of these smears.

She'd better be careful bringing up Wright, though. She'll end up having to defend her own wacko pastor, and her church will be a whole lot more alien-sounding to non-fundie Americans than Obama's.

Not sure about Palin leading the charge, she did say it was McCain's call.

Think about it. She's the mouthpiece for the McCain campaign. Trust me, she's not saying this kind of stuff on her own.

She's trying to make the media bring it up without it looking like the McCain campaign brought it up.

If The McCain campaign brought it up then it would leave Palin's church as fair game for the Obama campaign, whereas if the media manufactured a fiasco the only thing Obama can do is complain about the media, which is dangerous.

Fortunately the whole Wright fiasco is over now and no one cares.

she's on the ticket. she is the campaign. if she brought it up, the mccain camapaign brought it up.

Of course she's not saying these things on her own. She's utterly incapable of original thought. She talks when someone pulls the string sticking out of her back.

user-pic

If she's bringing it up, McCain's already made the call. Palin wouldn't bring it up on her own - she's probably been told to do so.

Exactly my thought. Let's keep playing that clip with the witch doctor. Or talk about how she was in the church when the head of "Jews for Jesus" spoke recently. Or talk about how her husband was a member of a secessionist party that hates America.

Actually, on second thought, let's not. Just keep the focus on the economy and who's got the vision and temperament to lead America in a time of crisis.

user-pic

You betcha!

That was the first ad that just made me instantly pissed off at John McCain.

The ad is actually kind of weak.

I hate that stupid inverted triad arpeggio thing that McCain plays for his "approve this message" bit, that music just irritates me beyond belief.

The desperate last gasps of a dying campaign. Pull the fucking plug, already.

I second your motion.

user-pic

It's like torture. And it has to stop!

Well, Chuckles Krauthammer basically said the McMoron campaign was over last week so you know they are just going through the motions and probably setting up the groundwork for doing what they do best: being the party in opposition. But in this case, it may be over the next gazzilion years.

You know, I really hope so. All that thrashing around is pretty ugly and undignified... not to mention someone could get hurt. Hope those death throes don't last too long.

Joke of the day.

What do John McCain and Sarah Palin have in common?

They've both been charged with corruption and ethics violations.

Get it?

It's like a match made in heaven. I think an Obama surrogate should bring this match made in heaven to light and suggest maybe its this dishonesty that has brought them together.

user-pic

"Partners and Soul Mates" - as mcShame said from the start!

user-pic

Plus this from bmaz at emptywheel:

http://emptywheel.firedoglake.com/2008/10/06/new-proof-on-longtime-mccain-lie-about-threatening-official/

New info has surfaced substantiating that mcCain threatened someone's job if they didn't go along with mcShame's program. Happened around the time of the Keating 5 scandal.

user-pic

That McCain ad is just dumb and is made dumber with the liberal congressmen line at the end. Obviously it's using RNC money to run it. McCain's money must be REALLY low right now if he has to use RNC money.

The World Financial Market has tumbled today. Thus the economy is still very much in people's minds. Obama needs to keep talking about the economy and what he will do to improve it. That's what people care about.

Ayers, Wright, and Rezko will only take the McCain campaign so far. Palin has her troopergate stuff that will happen on Friday.

user-pic

Huge news: McCain quietly plans over a trillion dollars in cuts from Medicare/Medicaid to fund his health care plan:

user-pic

How nice. Let the seniors and the poor and disabled die - the young and hearty can live...

And it's from the WSJ... I can see another ad coming from the Obama campaign.

I wanna smack little Billy Kristol - his gush over Palin this week was titled "The Wright Stuff".

He should be taken aside and have his mouth washed out.

Even better. I'd like to see him working a blue-collar factory job. The little puss wouldn't last two weeks.

McCain/Palin: an absence of truth and honor.

Whatever you do today, do add reading Cohen's editorial in the NYT,,,,, it covers the waterfront quite nicely.
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/06/opinion/06cohen.html?_r=1&ref=opinion&oref=slogin

On Pastor Wright and Palin's Kenya loonie,,,,, Pastor Wright is even at his most skatalogical is utterly in tune with the Hebrew Scriptures as well as the Gospels,,,,, the Kenya loonie, is in Prophetic terms, a false prophet of Ba'al, whose name and actions are 'as shit amongst the gentiles'.

user-pic

The worm has turned for sure.

btw, Paliin doesn't even know where Afghanistan is.

Heh, she thinks she is seeing it from Alaska every morning.

In a further sign that a whole lot more dirt is going to be dug up on the candidates before this race is over, the Los Angeles Times reports that McCain's record as a Naval Aviator was marked by recklessness and avoidable accidents

Add to this the lengthy Rolling Stone expose and today's Washington Post style section piece on McShame's first wife and how he and Cindy got engaged while McShame was still married, and one thing is clear: If reporters look into both candidates' backgrounds equally, McShame will be expose for the fraud he is and Obama will win in a landslide.

Palin can and will continue to say anything she wants - regardless of how ridiculous it may be - because she is completely unaccountable to the american people. The only members of the press she is speaking to are the right-wing lapdogs and they sure won't call her on it. Regardless of my own biases, from a perspective on what that means for democracy, it's very sad.

I agree. What it foretells of a McCain-Palin adminstration in regards to the press would be enough not to vote for them.

First poll out today has Obama +5 in NM

A tidbit for your enjoyment: "Palin", an 11th Century Norman name, comes from the Latin, meaning, as one might guess, "backwards." So, there you go...again.

Possibly from a line of bastardy issueing from Duke William the Bastard of Normandy,,,,,, ya never know.

This is where we really need 527s to exploit the First Dude's secessionist background. Palin's not just "palling' around" with America-haters, she's having their babies. But the Obama camp is (I think rightly) ignoring her altogether.

user-pic

Rasmussen: 52 O 44 M

Why can't Obama get 53%?

He just can't close the deal! He should be polling at 80%! Hillary would be getting 95%!

Insincerely, A Concerned Troll

user-pic

Financial Markets: Asia and Europe down around 5%. US markets down around 2%.

I think the Keating 5 History Lesson is gonna arrive just about in time for folks to learn the toxic stuff that mcShame's been involved in. Toxic stuff he's wallowed in forever. No lipstick involved.

I don't intend to be mean or anything---- but how long is that Nancy Ps neck anyway?

user-pic

Not as long as her liar's nose.

user-pic

Bingo. Also, her smile gets wider the more whopper the lie.

user-pic

Hey, it's fair game now.

Why let the other side define the norms: "its only fair game if they do it first."

If its constructive to our cause to do it now, just do it.

Personally, I think its more instructive to get out in front. That way, instead of launching another ad attacking Barach, they have to launch another ad defending themselves.

I say this as an observer, not a pro. I assume that they know what's best. Of course I thought the same of Kerry.

Well the LA Times piece certainly helps clear up the problems he's had with Spain.....

my thought as well.

user-pic

Wait, Palin drinks mochas at Starbucks? What an elitist!!

By the by -- did anyone else notice Palin repeatedly referred Obama by the first name during the debate?

Yes, was that supposed to be a witchcraft exorcism? And what about the Alaska Independence Party? Isn't the first dude a member there? Members of that party have made some very anti-American comments. And she attended how many of their conventions? Sent an encouraging video message as governor, right?

Game plan from the Obama campaign: All counter punches must be directly linked to economy and/or Bush, the way Keating 5 has been done. You have to keep economy and Bush's 3rd term in the forefront.
This is the only winning strategy.

With Global Markets plunging... this seems like another bad tactic from the McCain campaign.

The Wall Street Bailout was not a silver bullet.

Yes, but can't we play it just a few times? Please?

If she is stupid enough to go down in flames with John McCain, a man who is at the end of his career and ruin any future she might have in her party, well that just proves she is to stupid to be VP. With just a little bit of improvement, she could have been the next Jean Schmidt, (R-OH), who called decorated former Marine, Rep. John Murtha (D-PA), a coward.

So Palin thinks that the media hasn't covered the Wright story enough? Good lord, what rock was she living under during the primaries?

No kidding.

[BTW, TPM webmeisters: login issues are still occurring, at least under Google Chrome.]

user-pic

In context, Obama was calling for more ground forces, and once again he was right. Seems to me the Obama campaign might do an ad showing the entire context of Obama's statement on Afghanistan (along with similar statements by Bush and Karzi on the bombing) and ask "How far will John McCain bend the truth to try to get elected?"

"But you know, I guess that would be a John McCain call on whether he wants to bring that up."

I'm so glad *she* didn't raise the subject...

These things are suicide moves for McLame. Raise Ayers and Wright, get trumped by Keating Five, Alaska secessionists, and what, she has a whacko pastor too? Pass the popcorn!

Does Palin really want to go there with her witch doctor and Todd’s associations with some whacked out church that renounced America? Please go there please. I would love to watch the complete annihilation of dip shit Palin on national TV

Funny how she only talks to the home team media now.

Everything Sarah Palin says -- like Sarah Palin's nomination itself -- is fodder for the weak-minded, ignorant, right-wing extremist, racist, culture-war dittohead base. It is not aimed at "independent" or "undecided" voters -- it is aimed at getting mental slaves of Rush Limbaugh out to the polls on election day.

Because that's the only part of the electorate that the McCain campaign has left.

user-pic

Does Palin really think she can use this strategy?

It's like she's saying "Us Joe and Jane Sixpackers wouldn't want to see a, ya know, the blacks livin' in the White House, but, ya know, I'm not goin' there."

Or "Barack and his librul friends could, ya know, like engage in some domestic turrism and might be plannin' to bomb Main Street 'Merka, but I'm not gonna go there, also."

I'm waiting for her to bring up "Obama wants to kill babies who survive abortions" and I doubt I'll have to wait long.

Her voice is the death rattle of a fatal chest wound. Stick a fork in McStain.

PEACE

I'm kind of glad Palin isn't talking to mainstream press. She's in a bubble and doesn't know that her tactics are tired.

The markets are tanking today, and McCain/Palin aren't offering any suggestions on they'll deal with this crisis. Oh, I remember -- they're all tied up with their smear tactics. Yup, "country first".

on "how" they'll deal

In a further sign that a whole lot more dirt is going to be dug up on the candidates before this race is over, the Los Angeles Times reports that McCain's record as a Naval Aviator was marked by recklessness and avoidable accidents -- most notably the time he flew into power lines and caused a blackout in Southern Spain. "In today's military, a lapse in judgment that causes a crash can end a pilot's career," the paper says. "Though standards were looser and crashes more frequent in the 1960s, McCain's record stands out."

Did the LA Times fail to read the Rolling Stone article on this very subject? Did Eric Kleefeld?

I think the witchdoctor pastor and the secessionist association could definitely be part of an Obama attack -- just end with something like "John McCain chose this woman to be one heartbeat away from the presidency. Do we want a president who would make such a reckless choice?" Bring it all back on John.

I want to see a well developed background story on Toddboy, given that he was cc'd on Sarah's government e-mails. Any nongovernmental person THAT inside her operations needs more transparency about who and what he is and does.

Pres '08
Oct 6 Rasmussen: Obama (D) 52%, McCain (R) 44%
Oct 6 Res. 2000: Obama (D) 52%, McCain (R) 40%

KOS 2000 has been holding steady in that +12 range. Rasmussen, which hasn't always been Obama favorable, hit it's widest lead.

That GQR pol looks like a throwaway. Skewed massively to older voters. 40% 55+, 32% 60+.

John

I think McCain/Palin going strong for total character assasination is a huge error . . . there is so much on both that can be dug up with many willing to expend the energy to do just that . . . all will come back to bite them.

The only drawback is unfortunately the crowd that Palin draws with her disgusting "folksy" bull are dumb enough to really believe the crap. Most think for themselves and are immediately aware that it's all poison politics and a sign of desperation.

Good piece by Nate at the 538:

http://www.fivethirtyeight.com/2008/10/in-georgia-small-improvements-in-black.html

The polls show Saxby Chambliss getting into a much tighter Senate race there. This is an instance where some synegy between Obama's Ground Game and Jim Martin's campaign could pay dividends. Obama has too many states to work to be there all the time. But Martin is in the state 24/7, and if the race looks tight, is going to be getting loads of free press coverage. If the tide fully turns on Bush-McCain-Chambliss as the Old Boys Network that got us into this mess, Martin can start working the Change angle which help up ticket.

Obama is going to get a hurricane of slime that McCain and the RNC is going to throw at him this week. I think more than a Rope-A-Dope is needs. In part he needs to to let McCain Punch Himself Out - looking bad going negative. But he also needs a good stinging counterpunch: be it Keating or a extemely good job of framing the Narrative that McCain went negative because he doesn't want to talk about the Economy.

The thing is... *if* Obama weathers this and comes out the other side of this weak in the same polling position or better (if McCain punches himself out and the counterpunch lands), there's massive upside for the Dems. There are a lot of ripe Senate and Congressional races. If McCain is flopping around the last four weeks of the race largely DOA, the ability to work down ticket to help local races, and in turn up ticket for "coming" candidates to help drive more votes to Obama, we could see something amazing. Right now we're on the road to seeing something very good. But we still have about 25% chance of something really monumental.

If the last 2-3 weeks on the Economy were key to "turning" the race by finally getting McCain re-framed, this week could be a key to a way that's quite different from what the RNC Gang things. Rather than "re-turning" the race to McCain with the slime, if it fails or has little impact, it opens up the game to a huge blowout not just on the Presidential level, but also in the Senate and Congress.

We need to look back at 2006. Did things look this good around the country in the first full week of October? Was there a clear national push to it, or was it more localized with things like Allen melting down in VA, stem cells playing a role in a race, etc? This time we've got local issues/candidates, and a national message that's getting more defined and an obvious standard bearer for the party.

Big week.

It's.."women who don't "help" other women"..Palin is such a goobering phony.

Curious if her witch hunter exorcist minister's views should be more publicly held up...with hands on Palin...btw...how do we know the demons ever came out of Palin, I mean the Hly Spirit is always honest and Palin certainly isn't honest. She has the nerve to talk about Obama's past church minister with Troopergate hanging over her head. Now that is corruption you can believe in.

Palin's personal and government situation is one huge dishonest scandal yet she says "look at Obama, not at me". Wink, wink. Taking pride in being ignorant. She makes pretty look ugly very quickly.

She's a distraction from our problems and I'll be glad when she gets out of the way so we can focus on dealing with our nation's problems.

Check out this video on McCain and the Keating deal.

http://my.barackobama.com/page/invite/keatingvideo

These attacks have made the millions of Obama supporters angry, contribute more money and go out and get hundreds of more registered voters--keep it up McCain and Palin. I know no better way to energize the Obama campaign even more in these last days before November 4th. The contributions keep coming in.

Waugh! They stole the climactic sound from my favorite video game!! Talk about dishonorable!! My game!!
