Did Virginia GOP Mailer Shade Pic Of Osama To Look Like Obama?
A bunch of you have written in to say that the cropped image in the Virginia GOP flyer depicting Dems as appeasers of terrorists, which we posted on below, is actually Osama Bin Laden.
Here's a stock picture of Osama, next to the flyer's pic:

If this is indeed the source of the flyer's picture, note that in the flyer's reproduction, the skin is darker, the words artfully cover up the nose, which is faded, and the beard appears much lighter, so that it's like a facial shadow.
Keep in mind that the chair of the Virginia GOP was the one who made national news the other day for comparing Obama and Osama by saying that "both have friends that bombed the Pentagon."
Given that, it seems fair to at least wonder if this is an Osama pic shaded to ambiguously resemble Obama.
As noted below, we asked a Virginia GOP spokesperson who the image is, and he couldn't immediately say. We've checked in with him again to ask if the pic is a photoshopped version of Osama, and we'll let you know when we hear back.

Answer to headline?
Yes. That's just what they did.

Looks like they erased the mustache, shaded out the beard, darkened the face, and thereby have now smeared blacks, arabs, muslims, and Obama. There is now depth to which they will not descend.
Now, more than ever, we need to stand with our brothers and sisters who may be black or arab or muslim ... and everything else they might try to smear.
All my life repubs have tried to brand as "unAmerican" anyone they disagreed with or felt threatened by. What pathetic fearful folks they are.

This is outrageous - that's all the GOP knows how to do - outrage, whether they are whining and claiming victimhood or they are being nasty and making veiled and not so veiled accusations.
They are a complete failure as a political party - all they are now is a bunch of loosely amalgamated hate factions.

They taught themselves in Bush's elections that arrogantly disapproving of the opponent in a generalized way, while whispering to dumb people (especially rural) that he was a
psycho/coward/traitor/bed-wetter was how to win. This time it isn't working so well, though Biden has marveled at how many people he met on the Trail who regretted they could not vote for Obama because they got an informative e-mail explaining how Obama was a Muslim terrorist.
But the thick-as-a-brick vote isn't quantitatively enough this time. And that's the only vote they seemingly know how to court any more.

That would be VERY powerful, no?

It looks like a very common stock photo filmstrip background combined with a parchment/vintage paper shot, like this one one with OBL's face on layered above it.
Rather than being carefully crafted, it would seem that the graphic designer was kind of lazy, grabbed some stock photos and threw it together. I'd be willing to bet they didn't give a thought at all about whether the color matched Obama's skin tone... it was probably already the background color to start with. Lordy.
I hate to say it, but people are way too paranoid thinking there's some subliminal smear going on here. THE GOP ISN'T THAT CLEVER, and their audience not that perceptive. If it was a smear (other than the blatant stupidity), you'd know it.

The craziest thing about this flier is that it surely works against McCain. Just look at the slogan: "America must look evil in the eye and never flinch". Now think about the debate appearances of the candidates. Who do you trust to look someone in the eye? Who do you trust not to flinch? Twitchy, angry, scared John McCain? Or calm, responsible, authoritative Obama?
After these debates, what are they thinking, campaigning on eye contact?
Further proof that the GOP is totally tone-deaf: unaware of how their campaign is perceived outside the base.

The photo hasn't been distorted or altered. Where the trickery comes in is here:
* Nose, turban, hair, other features erased, so it is only eyes
* Photo is monochrome brown, effectively erasing the natural complexion.
What they've done is eliminate the numerous ways that people distinguish and identify another person, leaving it only the eyes, with no other information, including color.
What this does is 1) let them play up the "who's the enemy -- Obama or Osama?" racist hate message, while being able to defend it technically. ie. They didn't 'merge' or blend in features of Obama into the photo or distort it, but rather simply cropped out all identifying info to make it deliberately ambiguous.
This is 100% deliberate, as they've evidently taken care not to fall into the trap of airbrushing or blending in other photos or anything that could be considered photoshop malfeasance.

Maybe this is technical, but if they were to alter the color of a color photo, it would be a problem. Monochrome photos are a common technique in adverts and mailers. So is cropping photos and erasing the edges. So they have an excuse and have sidestepped the type of "photoshop" abuse that got Time magazine when they darkened OJ's face in a color photo.

I don’t think it’s paranoia – or even a stretch – to assume that at this point the GOP is conflating Obama with Osama by any means possible (short of actually saying that Obama launched his political career from the living room of Osama’s cave).
I'm sorry but if this sort of thing is acceptable in Sacramento, then I don't think it takes a gigantic leap in logic to assume that it was an intentional cropping out of the beard and the turban - making it less obviously a picture of Osama and more generally a menacing brown person who may or not be foreign and may or not remind you of Barack Obama - the very image of the nebulous menace in our midst that the GOP has been working so hard to conjure.

Since waterboarding is a form of torture most recently associated with our treatment of Al Qaeda suspects, it's not hard to see how this is an under-the-radar association of the presidential candidate with the Islamic terrorist group.

It's immaterial whether or not they used photo manipulation to create this mailer. The important thing is they are trying to create a connection in the minds of the easily swayed between Barack Obama and Osama bin Laden as a way to get them to vote against Obama and for McCain. Fear is the first weapon in the Republicans' arsenal, not reason.

Look carefully at the eyes and the skin markings above the left eye. The marks are identical. It's clear they did some Clone Stamping or Healing Brush stuff in the hair and around the edges, but were too stupid to take the 10 or 15 seconds it would have taken to clone out the marks. Next look at the highlights in the eyes. They played a tad with the left eye highlight I think but highlights are not all that easy to move because the lighting used to take the original was straight on and so the highlights can pretty much only be where they are. Moving them would mean changing the lighting, It can be done, but maybe not by their PS person. Finally note that they cleaned up the white part of the eyes to the right of the cornea (as you look at the fake) but not to the left. I agree that the brown was likely picked up off a real Obama photo. No big trick. One click in fact. Really sloppy work. I grabbed the original and pretty much duplicated the fake in less than 15 minutes.

I would disagree with the assertion that all they did was remove information from the photo. If you look just to the right of the word "evil" you will see a small round spot of darker color (there appear to be several similar added spots but that is the most obvious). There is no corresponding mark on the original picture of bin Laden. On the other hand, Obama has a number of recognizable moles and freckles.
While I agree that only masking identifiable features of bin Laden's face is suspect but ambiguous (why would they use a picture of the public face of the war on terror only to make it almost completely unrecognizable?). Once they begin adding incorrect information to the photo, suspicious is the most generous term to be applied.
No legitimate explanation for this action comes to mind (please let me know if you can think of one). In fact the only reason I can think of to add a freckle or birth mark to a photo in this context is to reinforce the unconscious connection between Obama and bin Laden.
In deed the combined effect of alterations to the original photo caused at least some of us to immediately identify the person in the photo as Obama. Perhaps they overshot their goal of ambiguity.

Yes, they may have overshot the goal post here in terms of ambiguity. Too clever by half?

You can't conclude that. The "original photo" at the top is heavily pixelated and VERY low resolution. For the mailer, they would have used a higher resolution one, where the speckles could have been available. They also would typically add some "graininess" to the entire photo with the Add Noise filter, for stylistic purposes.
I think the GOP was careful to avoid "doctoring" the photo but deliberately erased all identifiable features to create the Obama-Osama meme. I can imagine GOP operatives being excited how this trick of erase everything but the eyes and making it monochrome lets them essentially call Obama a terrorist and get away with it. If people claim it is doctored, they will whip out the original, show the comparison, and prove it is not.
The only place they may have slipped up is that it is not a black and white photo, it is not a sepia toned photo, it is a very BROWN toned monochrome photo. Why brown??? That tone says "African American", and seems almost as if they sampled a photo of Obama and then applied that to the filter. The color is probably the most suspicious part.
