Did McCain Hire Same Firm To Do His Robo-Slime That Targeted Him In 2000?

Can it be that John McCain hired the same outfit to robo-slime Barack Obama that hit McCain himself with the scurrilous robocall campaign in 2000 that he decried at the time as "hate calls"?

Yes, according to Christopher Schoff, an official with the Democratic Party in Minnesota, also known as the DFL.

Schoff tells me he got one of McCain's calls on Tuesday night, the one saying Obama put "Hollywood above America." Only in this case, the call wasn't robo; because such calls are illegal in Minnesota, the McCain call was a live person reading from a script.

Schoff says he cut off the person reading to him and asked the name of the company. He was told it was DF King, in Brooklyn, and was sent to a supervisor.

Schoff says the supervisor then told him that the company had been subcontracted for the calls by a larger company called FLS Connect that had been hired by McCain's campaign to do the calls. (Calls to FLS weren't immediately returned, and it may be tough to nail all the particulars of this down completely before FEC filings are available.)

And who is FLS Connect, you ask?

Well, it turns out FLS, which has offices in Phoenix and St. Paul, is basically the same outfit that George W. Bush hired to robo-slime McCain during the 2000 South Carolina primary, something that McCain repeatedly denounced with great outrage.

In 2000, the Washington Post reported that the Bush team's phone operation was conducted by a firm called Feathers, Hodges, Larson and Synhorst. A press release in 2003 (via Nexis) indicates that this firm had by then become Feathers, Larson and Synhorst, or FLS for short.

On February 20, 2000, McCain thundered that the robocalls hitting him -- done by this outfit -- were "hate calls" that had "inundated" him. Now, if Schoff is right, McCain appears to have enlisted the same outfit for his robo-slime campaign.

How perfect! No one could have made this one up if they'd tried.

Lots more from HuffPo's Sam Stein, who got here first and has more details.

This should surprise exactly nobody. I mean McCain hired Tucker Eskew to help prepare Sarah Palin for her role as running mate. Eskew of course was the vile mind behind the Bush Campaigns South Carolina smear campaign on 2000.

McCain says he's not Bush, but he hired Bush 2000 Campaign staff to run his campaign.

user-pic

McCain is pathetic.

that's really all I can say about him any more.

He's just pathetic.

user-pic

Power has corrupted him. He and his shrill wife will clearly say and do anything.

user-pic

He will never be forgiven. Never.

user-pic

Have you tried his baby back ribs?

user-pic

30 pieces of silver.

user-pic

I guess McShame's Golden Rule is "Do unto others as others have done unto you."

user-pic

The Slimeball Express stays on track. McCain will be viewed with loathing and contempt for the rest of his worthless life. I hope it was worth it, Magoo.

user-pic

That's what I don't get, Samuel. Who would want to live out the rest of their years like this? I haven't always kept my dignity, and nobody is proud of everything they've done.

But to just sell your soul....

user-pic

We've stepped of the edge and into the Twilight Zone. It's a shame Letterman didn't know about this last night.

There'd better be some scathing articles about this and soon, it's funny as hell, and will sell papers. Hypocrisy is always a crowd pleaser, yup yup!

user-pic

This is worse than hiring that slime Eskew. It is truly shocking, and kind of sad, to see a man many of us thought was a great American reduced to this.

Will the MSM pick up on this story? Of course not. That would require reporting, journalism, that sort of thing. They much prefer to have the story completed and wrapped up with a bow. If there's more reporting to be done, they would prefer real reporters do it for them first.

The best we can hope for is coverage of the robocalls and mailers, which I have seen on CNN today, but ALWAYS followed by some absurd equivocation about how the Obama campaign is "attacking" McCain for his age. Even though it is annoying how they do this, it doesn't take a genius to see the qualitative difference between robocalls questioning Obama's patriotism on one hand, and Obama referring to McCain as "erratic" on the other.

Plus, I don't think many people, even older people, are offended by Obama raising McCain's age, even indirectly. It is an issue. Plain and simple. Obama's link to Bill Ayers is not, and the polls bear me out on this.

user-pic

That's exactly what made me mad at Schieffer in the debate. Sure, it may be the best debate of the three as people say, but that question -- that was essentially saying "You two are equally guilty for this ugliness." The same false equivalency we've been seeing throughout this. McCain's age is a legitimate question (especially with that brainless whack being his running mate), so is his temperament. "Palling along with terrorists" is definitely not. Why do those idiots keep failing to make this simple distinction? It makes me sick.

user-pic

Say what we may about the horrific campaign McCain has run, but this equivalence obsession in the media comes as a direct result of the constant Republican talking point about the "liberal media". It has had a chilling effect.

Can you imagine what the polls would look like if the media actually did their job?

user-pic

What really frosts me is that this is the flailings of a looser. He's making everyone's perception of politics even worse (yeah, like kash79 says below). I don't know the future repercussions but which ones can be anything but bad? This shit needs to be known and abhorred and fucking now.

user-pic

This is what happens when you get blinded by your own hatred - you become your own worst enemy.

What a twisted little man. I can't wait for this to be over for the sake of his own sanity!

user-pic

I hope when I'm in my seventies I hate as little as possible. Too be this angry and hateful at this point in his life, with all of the privileges he's had, shows that he is, indeed, a twisted little troll.

user-pic

I live by the Edith Piaf Rule:

Je ne regrette rien.

I lived with a couple of people who were full of regret in later life and I vowed not to do that and I think it helps you keep from being bitter, which leads to all kinds of problems.

:)

user-pic

I wonder what Senator McCain's blood pressure is? I half expected to see one of his eyes pop out of its socket during the last debate.

user-pic

But as far as hiring the same company, I know handing me my ass in a lawsuit is one of the best ways possible to get a referral from me if I'm conflicted out or need co-counsel.

(Of course, if they acted like dirtbags, those referrals may be from clients who were such assholes I swore I'd never represent them again or from guys locked up in mental hospitals who cold-call claiming they're perfectly healthy and being held there and drugged as part of a conspiracy between the doctors and their scheming relatives.)

user-pic

excellent analysis!

user-pic

I really want McCain to be asked about this, on camera, by a reporter.

But given that the only person to have asked McCain about G Gordon Liddy (or any of McCain's other nefarious friends) was David Letterman, I'm not holding my breath.

OT:
I also noticed that the press reports of David Letterman's interview did not report that question, nor Dave's mercilous hammering of McCain about picking Palin. If you missed it last night, you should find it and watch it.

Here is Dave going after Palin, trying to reach out to the "old John McCain:"

DL: Now here’s my point of view on this. And again, I really don’t know anything. And I’m an independent. I have no party affiliation. When this [the Palin pick] happened, I thought to myself, wow, you know in my daily life – and anybody who’s got kids, yourself, anybody – you try to take the best care of your children that you can for their future. Present and future. And I kind of felt like that’s the responsibility to a huge extent of our administration. So the person, man or woman, who is in charge of that, has got to do the same. And I was just wondering if the thoughtfulness of that process included your selection of Vice President.
JM: Oh sure.
DL: I mean, if you are unable to fulfill your office, we get a 9/11 attack, Sarah Palin is the president who leads us through that.
JM: Sure. She’s been the governor of a state with 24,000 employees.
[bla bla bla Reagan bla bla]
DL: Let me just get back to my question. Well, I mean, either you’re right or you’re wrong. You know what you’re talking about or you don’t know what you’re talking about. But I’m just telling you from my perspective that I thought, Oh, oh my God. I’m sure she’s a lovely woman. I’m sure she’s done a great job in Alaska. But in terms – this country. I’m 61. I’ve never seen it in this big a mess. I’ve seen economic problems. I’ve seen war. I’ve never seen a combination of things quite like this. I’ve never seen the free fall diminishment of the impression of the United States around the country. I’ve never seen anything like this. I have a four-year-old son. I wonder what the hell, is it going to be 160 twenty years from now on his birthday? So I’m thinking, alright, this is a pretty important job.
JM: But with all due respect, she’s had the leadership experience that’s necessary to run bureaucracies, to reform…And because she was not known inside the Georgetown cocktail circuit, doesn’t matter to me.
DL: Let me ask you a question. In your guts, in your stomach – you’re a smart, tough, savvy guy –
JM: Thank you. That’ll be a commercial, coming to you soon.
DL: If I were to run upstairs, wake you up in the middle of the night, and say, “John, is Sarah Palin really the woman to lead us through the next four, eight years? Through the next 9/11 attack?”
JM: Absolutely. She has inspired Americans. That’s the thing we need...

user-pic

She sure *has* inspired Americans-to vote for Obama.

user-pic

Wow, that is just awful. "She has inspired Americans". Yeah, she's inspired them to hatred and division. McCain must be so proud.

And, if "inspiring Americans" is the key factor, he should've picked Michael Phelps, or "E.T."

user-pic

I think their strategy is clear and very republican. Make it ugly. Turn people off. Lower the turnout. Supress the voters at the ballots. Win.

user-pic

Agreed. Which seems like an incredibly bad strategy given all of the record newly-registered voters.

I could give a shit about all of the undecideds (Tiger Petters, Douche Nozzles, Fucktards), and I frankly believe that in a perfect world, they would just stop voting altogether. Undecided how?

I think that Obama people are coming out to vote no matter what.

user-pic

Co-sign on the Obama supporters. They will come out en masse. Monday is first day of early voting in Texas and I'm curious to see what if any lines there are. If so, I would assume that enthusiasm in a red state would only be that much higher in the swingers and blues...

user-pic

No different from 2000 or 2004.

Is McCain absolutely certain when he says "I am not George Bush".

I'm not so sure.

user-pic

Why does McCain hate America? I'm serious. Has the experience of this campaign led him to a place where he just doesn't care about anything anymore? He certainly doesn't seem to care about what he's doing to himself, much less anyone else. It's grotesque and ugly to see someone go almost totally to the dark side.

user-pic

See, John McCain is a maverick. Only a maverick would hire the same firm that once smeared him. He's being mavericky. That's what America wants in a president--somone with a clear lack of standards.

Isn't McCain supposed to make a stand against those smearing Obama. He said he would. Oh, that's right, McCain doesn't have to cuz he's a maverick!

Being a Maverick is just like playing the POW card--anything and everything is okay.

user-pic

He's no maverick. This is just another area that McCain agrees with George Bush. ha!

user-pic

For those of us with Minnesota connections, FLS has been in the news. It's owned by a fellow named Jeff Larson, who is Minnesota Senator Norm Coleman's landlord in Washington. He rents Norm a "room in the basement" of a plush house for $600 per month. The sleaze runs full circle for Norm.

Voted for Mondale

user-pic

I hope Greg reads this far down in the thread. That tie into Norm is great.

John

user-pic

I'm watching the replay of Hardball. Sweet Jesus, Michele Bachmann is a piece of work. And why can't she get that look off her face? She looks like Katherine Harris caught in headlights.

user-pic

One would hope that this would put an end to the Tire Swinging. How much lower can McCain go as a human being than to hire the people who smeared his *adopted daughter* in the most vile way. It would be like Bronson in Death Wish asking the people who killed his wife and raped his daughter to handle the remodling on his house.

We need to stop talking about McCain having no honor. This is below that. His freaking family.

John

user-pic

No really, try the ribs.

Don't get me wrong. I am glad the robocalls are getting so much attention but I'll say it again - they are WORTHLESS.

Glad to hear on the Rachael Madow show Mudcat Saunders agrees with me. The RNC McCain people are robo calling because they don't have any money for TV. According to Mudcat - $7500 to robocall a congressional district.

As Mudcat also points out, robocalling, now nearly 20 years old, is no longer very effective, doubly so when they're negative. People hang up robocalls - Don't you?

Full disclosure - I did endure Stevie Wonder's call for Obama during the CA primary..he sang..you guessed it "I just called to say 'I love' you..."

The Impulsively Unreflective Duo In..."McCain Goes Negative"

In our last episode, we saw the indomitable, impulsive duo suspend the campaign to take on the Crisis on Wall Street! Now, watch, as, in our next episode...McCain Goes Negative!

McCain paces the floor in the Fortress of Irritability. He is cracking walnuts.

A walnut slips to the floor.

McCain: Damn nutcracker!

Sarah Palin is sitting in a chair at a desk. She is writing on a piece of paper: "J.M + S.P." This is then crossed out and replaced by "S.P. + J.M.". These alternating versions , the one before it always crossed out, continues down the page.

McCain: Well, the first plan didn't work. We tried to put them in a trance with the folksy ray, but they had their deflectors halfway raised. If only you hadn't called the commander in Afghanistan "McClellan"

Palin: But...didn't you say they were fighting a civil war, Sir?

McCain stops pacing, looks at Palin silently. He is smiling through tight lips but he is holding back anger.

McCain: "I think the time has come. We have to call in...Dr. Negative."

He pushes a large black button, which is the only button on a red phone on his desk.

Dr. Negative immediately bursts through the door. He is carrying flyers, masking tape; telephone wires are wrapped around his arms hanging in every way; a tattered copy of the book "Accusations of Fascism, Communism, Terrorism, Drug Use, Pedophilia, Islamism, Adultery, Pandeism, Cannibalism, Cubism, Miscegenation, and Spousal Abuse...for Dummies!" is rolled and stuffed in his left pocket, filled with bookmarks; he is dragging a Robocaller behind him, leashed to a chain.

Dr. Negative (quickly, eagerly): Did you hear? Obama was born in Bin Laden's subterranean bomb making factory, outside of U.S. lines. He was born on a pile of cocaine and dynamite--and the midwife was a Trotskyite!

McCain: Not yet, Dr. Negative. I want you to meet Sarah.

Sarah: Oh, we've already met.

Dr. Negative: That trooper went down! He poisoned the salmon milk at the Wasilla Bible school! With drugs made at a Leftist Satan worshiping collective! That you could see from Russia!

Sarah: You betcha'!

Sarah and Dr. Negative give each other a high five. Dr. Negative's telephone wires rattle on his arm as he does so, triggering the Robocaller, which starts playing "...illegitimate babies made in test tube factories in North Korea and sent to Chicago by Bill Ayers..."

Dr. Negative shuts off the Robocaller with an embarassed smile.

Dr. Negative: Just practicing.

There is a pause.

McCain: That's fine, Dr. Negative. That's fine. Because, now, I have a special job for you. An important one.

Dr. Negative leaps into the air with excited glee. As he does, detritus falls to the floor--buttons reading "Election Day: Remember, the 3rd Tuesday in November!"; business cards, reading "Push Polls Anonymous--We Call, They Fall" and "Mongers On Call-No Rumor Too Far fetched"; Bandaids with purple hearts; mangled and dirty chads.

Dr. Negative: A new job! A special job! Oh, Mr. McCain! I'm ready! I'm ready!

Sarah watches from her chair, filing her nails.

McCain: Now, Dr. Negative. You have to make him seem radical...

Dr. Negative quickly pulls a can out of his right pocket, emblazoned with the word "Radical" He opens the top. Red and Black snakes fly out.

Dr. Negative: (eagerly, expectantly, hungrily) Yes...Yes...

McCain: You'll have to start rumors that are so inflammatory that they will spread like wildfire, and that will be started too late to stop them with the actual truth...

Dr. Negative pulls a gigantic grinder out of his left pocket. It is labeled "Rumor Mill". He turns the crank a few times. Hamsters, syringes, and Peace symbols fly out.

Dr. Negative: Yes...Yes...

He is salivating.

McCain: They will have to be so incredible, so over-the-top, based on such tawdry and poorly sourced evidence, yet riddled with tempting minutia--bullet gauges, Google maps of supposed meetings and the like, that the right will eat them up, and start analyzing the minutia with adolescent glee.

Dr. Negative (Very calmly, matter of fact): Oh, that's easy. They'll eat anything.

Dr. Negative reaches into his back pocket, pulls out a manila envelope labeled "Minutia: So-called "Proof" for the Right". He empties it to the floor. Bullet gauge measures, outdated copies of Photoshop, paperbacks entitled "How to Use the Insane as Competent Witnesses", "The Faked Moon Landings! Roswell! And Other Believable Phenomena!" and "You TOO Can Be A Warrior--From Your Own Couch!" fall to the floor.

Sarah plucks out the "Faked Moon Landings" book. She starts reading.

McCain: We know how our girl loves to read.

Sarah stops, and begins fixing her hair in a hand mirror.

McCain: Now, Dr. Negative, there is one final task.

Dr. Negative: Yes, Mr. McCain?

McCain: It is very difficult. Very...dark.

Dr. Negative: (Leaning forward expectantly, his voice quivering with excitement): Yes, Mr. McCain, Yes?

McCain: You will have to play the card that they played against me. Do you understand?

The room becomes silent. Sarah stops looking at herself, and looks towards the center of the room where McCain and Dr. Negative are staring at each other.

Dr. Negative: You mean...(eyes widened with disbelief. His telephone wires are quietly shaking as he shivers).

McCain (nodding): Yes.

Dr. Negative slowly removes from his jacket pocket what seems to be an ordinary pack of playing cards. They are labeled "Joker" brand. He takes a penknife from his pocket, and slowly slices the covering cellophane. There is a slight and distant roar. He looks at McCain.

McCain nods.

Dr. Negative then slowly removes the red ribbon encircling the cellophane at the top of the pack. He inserts the penknife--holding it from it very farthest end--and flips open the top of the pack.

Smoke begins to pour from the top of the pack, thick, acrid smoke. It quickly fills the room, covering all that is in sight.

McCain (shouting amidst the sound of smoke rushing into the room): And remember--no fingerprints!

Next episode: The smoke is cleared.

I just sent Mc Cain a sympathy card, for the lose of his soul.

I caught the Youtube piece of McCain upholding his use of the Robo Calls. How sad. I think Obama has explained about the Ayers situation in great detail. The problem is that McCain and his campaign can not accept it. I don't want someone in charge of this country, my country, that is so ruthless. McCain has made this campaign dirty in many ways. When I watched the YouTube piece, my skin crawled. I am just a simple person of many in this great country. When I watch the bitterness from McCain, it's very disturbing. I've never been much into politics until this year, but I am concerned about this country's economic situation. I just hope that McCain does not get elected. I will be voting and it will not be for McCain. He has flipped-flopped so many times throughout this year and for him to uphold his use of these childish calls speaks volumes about the man. This is not someone that we need running this country. If he does get elected, we will all pay dearly for it. I just hope the ones that do put him into office pay more. One thing that I disagree with him on is the health plan. I do not want my health insurance taxed. Who in their right mind would want that. So he gives everyone $5,000 for health coverage. Watch and see what happens to many peoples coverage when that happens. Many employers will say, well you have all that money to get coverage, so why do we have to continue covering you. We'll just drop your health plan, let you get your own, that will save us money. I am so afraid of that happening and the man will then turn around and tax our health plan. I either do not understand fully what or how McCain plans to do this or I do understand completely how he will disrupt the health care plans of many people in this country. I think McCain is too old (sorry) and his pick for VP is another story. I don't expect people to feel or think the same as myself, but people better think long and hard about the situations in this country. I'm scarred about the future. McCain started out his campaign very professional, but when Obama would not take him on with the town hall meetings, McCain became very mean. In the last debate, McCain brought that subject up again. You could tell by the look on his face that was a sore spot with him. To me that's when McCain changed and changed for the worse. He's never been able to get over that fact. Anyways, this is just some of my opinions and I just hope for the country that the best man wins.
