Brutal McCain Mailer Slams Obama's Patriotism, Says He "Partied With Hollywood's Elite" During Crisis

A scorching new mailer authorized by the McCain campaign directly questions Obama's patriotism by saying he put the interests of "Hollywood above America" during the bailout negotiations, and ratchets up the "celeb" attacks by saying he "partied with Hollywood's elite" at a time of national crisis.

The mailer -- sent in by a reader in Virginia -- uses these attacks to stir fears of Obama as a vaguely sinister other with a questionable background, closing with this stark warning: "We need a President who puts America first. Barack Obama. Not who you think he is."

Mystifyingly, the mailer shows Obama alongside familiar bogeywoman Barbra Streisand, but also...Leo DiCaprio. Click on the images to enlarge:

The mailer, the latest in a huge wave of under-the-radar attacks from McCain that depart from the McCain campaign's public message, is an amped up version of the robocall we reported on the other day that made similar accusations. It was paid for by the RNC, but authorized by the McCain campaign.

Leo as a bad guy? I just can't buy that line of attack.

user-pic

Seriously, aren't they stepping all over their messages?

He's a terrorist!
He's a celebrity!

He's an elitist!
He's a man of the street!

WTF?

user-pic

He smoked and made snide comments while sipping a martini at the country club!
But wait, he plotted the violent overthrow of the establishment while working as a subversive community organizer!

user-pic

Who is Barack Obama, indeed! LOL! Maybe the McCain campaign's strategy is just to confuse the heck out of everyone.

user-pic

The dregs. That's what this is. The lukewarm coffee grounds at the bottom of the cup. McCain's got nothing else.

user-pic

As I mentioned in the robo-caller thread, Obama needs to use these attacks in an ad of his own, to show folks what desperation McCain has resorted to.

As the original blog states, McCain is trying to sneak these smears in under the radar, hoping that they will not be refuted in the MSM is any way.

Obama needs to call attention, saying how McCain's gutter robocalls and smear mailers are not talking about issues - not about the economy, or healthcare, or the environment, but personal character attacks that so disgusted McCain when Bush used them against him in 2000.

Hell use that line of attack - McCain is running a Bush Campaign, hired Bush Campaign veterans, even the very same people who smeared McCain's honor and his family back in 2000.

"McCain says he isn't Bush, but he's sure running a George Bush Campaign."

user-pic

Like McShame partied in Saigon with R.W. Apple while his shipmates burned to death on the U.S.S. Forrestal?

user-pic

Was McCain on the Forrestal?

user-pic

Wait just a minute - there's a picture of Obama with Leonardo di Caprio? This is supposed to be a smear?

seriously - ROFLMAO!

user-pic

Hey, I heard that Obama, Ayers and Streisand were overheard toasting infanticide at an ACORN benefit held at a gay mosque in Burbank. The American people deserve to know the truth about this!

user-pic

Yes! There are so many "questions that need to be answered."

Barack Obama. Not who you think he is. Actually a little cooler than you thought.

user-pic

Aye, I like it. Obama: not the pointy headed Constitutional Law professor and political wonk/U.S. Senator you thought he was, but actually a pretty cool guy.

user-pic

Hey, all... just an FYI there is some news on Iraq today.

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/18/world/middleeast/17forcescnd.html?_r=1&oref=slogin

Yep, Obama, Bush, and al-Maliki all agree we should withdraw. McCain is meanwhile still holding out for victory, victory as HE defines it....

user-pic

Time magazine says we may have to get out of Iraq because of the recession . . . (link from Huffpo.)

user-pic

All the GOP crap like these makes me *really, really, really* want this election to be over today (by destroying them to pieces, of course).

user-pic

OT: Is there a search function on 538.com? I want to re-read the little piece Nate did on the 2 different Gallup models and can't for the life of me find it.

user-pic

I don't see any search function there, but google it by starting with "site:www.fivethirtyeight.com". For example, if you want to search "Gallup" then type in:

site:www.fivethirtyeight.com Gallup

which lets you search within the site.

user-pic

Thanks!

user-pic

But is he now, or was he ever, a member of the Communist Party???

user-pic

This is laughable on so many fronts. First, the Hollywood thing really only plays well with the base...and they ain't voting for Obama - never were, never will. Second, people already have solidified their impressions of how Obama reacted/presented himself during the early and scariest days of the financial crisis. They were impressed and they thought he did a better job than McCain. This won't change their impressions. Third - this coming from a guy who suspended his campaign and talked about canceling the debate. Obama spent a few hours at a fundraiser but McCain tried to pull off what was widely viewed as a gimmick. Last, they're sending this out during a week that McCain is on Letterman and the McCain campaign is working on getting Palin on SNL? Who's more Hollywood here?

This just won't work. It's not even worth responding to except in the sense that Jonze suggests - use this and all of the other desperate McCain attacks to a) point out how desperate McCain is, and b) show voters how out of touch McCain is - their 401ks are losing half their value or more and McCain is talking about Barbra? Come on!

Ayers didn't work. This won't work. The only thing that might have any impact is the ACORN stuff because it has a racial twist - ie, poor, lazy black folks trying to steal the election from Joe the Plumber and other hard-working white Americans. But I think even that one will fall flat. If race was in any way driving your decision re: who you are voting for this year, you've already made up your mind...and you weren't going to be voting for Obama anyway.

user-pic

I think I may be the only woman in America who didn't see Titantic.

This won't just not work - this is laughable. They put Obama and di Caprio on that thing - nobody is going to read it = they'll just look at the pictures!

user-pic

Well, their target audience does have the habit of just looking at the pictures. Werds is hard!

user-pic

Didn't see it either. Didn't like Leo when he was that young. He's MUCH better looking with a few lines! :-)

user-pic

Tena - you didn't miss anything. A Night to Remember is so much better.

user-pic

TeenaX, you are not the only woman in American that hasn't seen Titanic. I don't think I ever even saw a trailer for it.

user-pic

Oops, sorry I misspelled your name TenaX.

user-pic

I didn't see "Titanic" either. And I agree with you, I just don't see this having much impact in Virginia at all. I don't know of any fierce anti-Hollywood sentiment here; in fact, the state has worked hard in the last couple of decades to make itself attractive to Hollywood as a location site. The movie festival that is held in Charlottesville every year is a major statewide annual event, and there are a number of Hollywood-types who have homes in the Charlottesville area.

Karl Rove sucks.

user-pic

Karl Rove is an idiot.

user-pic

He's a sucky idiot who thinks we are idiotic suckers.

user-pic

Karl Rove has no penis.

user-pic

No balls either...

user-pic

I like how they say Obama didn't respond until 'two days after the crisis began.'

Anyone who's been paying a modicum of attention could tell you the crisis began long before one day last month. But I guess that wouldn't include the McCain campaign.

PS: I can't believe they're wasting precious campaign resources on this tripe, and they must really be stupid if they believe for a second that it's going to move any undecideds to McCain.

user-pic

C'mon. McCain was just on Letterman. Is this going to work?

Do fliers have any effect? Does anyone know of any data on this?

user-pic

Look at that flier - that's not going to work on anyone but the most rabid dead ender.

Leonardo di Caprio, for the love of god?

user-pic

The Republican party has inherited the mantle of racist voter intimidation once worn by the segregationist South. Hopefully, Obama's seeking the AG's help in prosecuting this vis the 1965 Voting Rights Act will send a chill up a few spines (if there any left).

The GOP is being ruled right now by the most vile elements in American politics and any so-called "moderate" or sane Repugs who stay silent are enablers of these crimes.

user-pic

I think a good ad would be to show Obama saying he wonders why McCain won't say these things to his face, cut to McCain claiming that he's denounced every instance of Republican hyperbole, then a string of the reprehensible crap said at McCain-Palin rallies, followed by a news report on the robocalls.

Then end it with a question -- "Where's John McCain, now that he doesn't have to stand face-to-face with Senator Obama? Hiding behind robots and his running mate?"

I used to respect John McCain, which is why it's so disappointing to see him sell his integrity for 30 pieces of silver and shot at the prize.

user-pic

This and the robo-calls are just signs that McCain is desperate to get at least the mouth-breathing base to vote for him.

user-pic

Yeah, that and the escalating violence as we keep beating them both tactically and strategically.

Several ACORN offices were broken into.

And I blame that on McLame -Painful, directly.

user-pic

Once again it reads like an Onion parody. God help us if anyone takes this stuff seriously.

user-pic

Man, imagine not being there during a major American crisis.

user-pic

Each desperate act further splinters the Patridiotic Party.

user-pic

Hollywood always get a bum rap. I'm telling you, come to Hollywood. It's much more of a shithole than most middle America people realize. And it's a place I currently call my home.

user-pic

Each and every one of them would sell their right leg to become Beverly Hillbillies.

;)

user-pic

Scorching? How about pathetic? God, they're desperate. They got nothing.

user-pic

John McCain was being spoonfed cake by George W. Bush while New Orleans drowned. Again, he's got no credibility left.

user-pic

This went out in North Carolina, as well.

user-pic

Just wanted to confirm what another commenter said: this flier went out in North Carolina, too. Not that it'll have any effect on anyone.

user-pic

This ad appeals only to the folks in this video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gHrExRHZnm0

user-pic

They are so full of it. The night before the event that Barack had in LA, McCain had an event in Orlando where he raised $5 million dollars. I am sure that plenty of Florida's GOP elite were there. The GOP is just mad that Obama made $4 million more at his event in LA.

user-pic

Meanwhile, I just early-voted in Northern Virginia. Lots of folks there. It felt good.

user-pic

Wowee. Lame.

user-pic

If you're missing Hardball right now, you're really missing something. It's getting tense and INTENSE.

user-pic

Perhaps I'm out of touch, but last time I checked, Hollywood was actually IN and PART OF America.

But that's just me.

user-pic

Yes it is. Hollywood brings a lot of revenue to the US and the state of California. A lot of hardworking taxpayers that live pay check to pay check in and around LA depend on Hollywood for their jobs.

user-pic

See who's just been inducted into the Hypocrites Hall of Infamy

user-pic

They're doing the robo calls here in New Hampshire. They just had the head of the NH Repub party on our local public radio station denouncing the calls. I thought for a minute (second?) that maybe the guy actually had a conscience, but no, he thinks theys should be pulled because they're a waste of money.

user-pic

Kevin Swanson advocate of "HATE and FEAR"

user-pic

So, let's bring out McCain ate birthday cake with Bush while NOLA drowned!

user-pic

Leonard DeCaprio? Isn't he the Italian Red Brigades terrorist who sunk that huge ocean liner and nailed who was it, Kate Holmes, maybe?
A bad man, for sure. If Obama is elected, the standards for cruise-ship construction will go to- no...wait a minute: anybody who is against global warming must be in favor of icebergs! Obama will ruin this pleasure cruise we are on!

user-pic

Breaking News: Chicago Tribune Endorses Obama!

For the first time in its history, the Chicago Tribune has endorsed a Democrat for President - stating among other things that, in selecting Palin, "McCain has put his campaign before his country."

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/chi-chicago-tribune-endorsement,0,1371034.story?track=email-alert-breakingnews

So there!

(I'll get my avatar & other mechanics organized after the election. We're heavily into phone banking, canvassing, GOTV)

user-pic

The original Hollywood elitist was Ronald Reagan and the GOP loved him. He might not have continued to party w/ the Hollywood elite but Frank Sinatra spent his share of quality time w/ Nancy.

user-pic

It seems to me that McCain and Bush were chomping down Birthday cake while New Orleans drowned. Obama is being too nice to his opponent.

user-pic

LOL
This is ridiculous.

user-pic

I got that same flyer in my mail the other day and tossed it right in the trash. I thought simultaneously, a) it's desperation on McCain's part, and b) What the f@%# is my name doing on the McCain/Palin mailing list (to date, it's the only piece of mail I've ever gotten from an (R) candidate.
