Biden On Robo-Slime: "John, Stop These Calls!"
Some must-watch video: Joe Biden positively erupts on the campaign trail in Colorado today, hammering away at John McCain over robo-slime-gate and demanding that McCain "bring down those robocalls!"...
"If he's really serious when he said this morning on one of the shows that this election is all about the economy, then I say, `John, stop your ads. Bring down those robocalls,'" Biden bellowed. "If it's about the economy, argue the economy!"
Biden built to his climax: "John, stop these calls!"
Thus using McCain's robo-slime to reinforce the Obama camp's chosen frame for the final month of the race: Anytime McCain steers the discussion towards Obama's bio or character, it's only because he's afraid to debate the economy. It's a frame that shows no signs of cracking or weakening.

OT: NBC/WSJ Poll - 52 O 42 M
October 21, 2008 6:32 PM | Reply | Permalink
Well, let me channel McCain's campaign.
Those numbers are clearly an outlier, because it's been patently obvious that both NBC and the Wall Street Journal are in the tank for Obama.
Second, BRADLEY EFFECT BRADLEY EFFECT BRADLEY EFFECT BRADLEY EFFECT.
So, taking into account the tankage factor interacting with Bradley, the actual numbers are O 46, M 44. It's all tied up, in other words.

Biden's only mistake was looking ahead, not at the election: talking about an Obama administration and what it was likely to encounter. Assuring supporters that Obama is more than equal to the challenge.
Because he didn't mention McCain, the Reps are taking this to mean that he was implying Obama was 1) more likely to call forth a crisis than McCain and/or 2) that Obama wouldn't be able to handle a crisis as well as McCain. But of course they will take anything uttered, cherry-pick the words, and spin it, so their interpretation really doesn't count. -- I haven't been able to get a full, in context, transcript but to me it's pretty apparent that he wasn't mentioning McCain because, to him, McCain simply isn't very relevant any more.
The bottom line is that EITHER man is going to be hit with an international crisis soon after taking office and the only question for the voters is which one they think will handle it best. I think Colin Powell has figured out the answer to *that.*
But, to clear things up, why doesn't someone simply ask Biden if he thinks there will also be a challenge if McCain is elected and whether he thinks Obama or McCain will be able to handle a crisis. I suspect his answer would be rather direct and unequivocal.

Good points, Elizabeth, as I mentioned to you on the other thread. Although, it's beginning to look more and more polarized around here. Again, did TPM cover these other remarks? Or is it that there is only a certain type of story for here?
The editorial board here used to be a bit more probing in my humble opinion. I dunno. Maybe I'm just burned out.

I know Biden was a governing choice but still he's been a dud on the trail. An attack dog he is not. He cannot seperate his personal friendship with McCain with the traditional role of VP candidate.

What attack dog moves would make him more effective? McSchlumpf and Company are attacking themselves just fine. With Michelle "Bile Spewer" Bachmann on their side, they are doing most of the attack-hyena work themselves.

Clark has no governing experience and has had far more scathing comments about Barack during the primary. Sebelius just doesn't scream attack dog and frankly she's got a great shot of taking one of the Senate seats once her governorship is over. As for Schweitzer, I don't know enough about him to have an opinion.
October 21, 2008 6:53 PM | Reply | Permalink
I like Clarke too. But all of them, you'll agree, have shortcomings. There is no "ideal" VP candidate.
Infact, as it seems, if this election boils down to Obama defending PA- no one better than a Old White Guy from Scranton who still takes train home every day.
More importantly, Biden is a better choice for governance. Winning is one thing but I like Biden's choice more for governing.

See that's how I came to see Biden at first - he was the perfect choice to offset any of the so-called white working class male nervousness about Obama.
A woman from Kansas would never have been able to do that for him. And Clarke - I don't know. He's just not there for me - I can't exactly say why, but he just doesn't do anything for me at all.

Here's what's coming out of Wisconsin (Green Bay - a relatively conservative part of the state):
http://wispolitics.com/index.iml?Article=139545
(note - if you go to the link you can also hear the call)-
A full script follows:
Hi this is Jeri Watermolen, calling for the Campaign for Change. I live in Green Bay and, like you, I've been getting sleazy phone calls and mail from John McCain and his supporters viciously - and falsely - attacking Barack Obama. I used to support John McCain because he honorably served our country - but this year he's running a dishonorable campaign. We know McCain will continue many of Bush's policies, and now he's using George Bush's divisive tactics. In fact, he hired the Bush strategists whose attacks even McCain once called hateful. Barack Obama will turn the page on these negative politics and stand up for the middle class. That's the change we need, and it's why I have changed my mind about John McCain. Join me in voting for Barack Obama.
