Bachmann: Chris Matthews Trapped Me!

Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN), whose re-election has been put in serious danger thanks to her McCarthyist rant on Hardball -- not to mention her ham-fisted attempts at denying she ever said it -- is now admitting that she misspoke.

But it gets even better: Bachmann is blaming Chris Matthews for her gaffe, telling a Rotary Club event in her district yesterday that she had never seen Hardball and should have avoided the trap Matthews laid for her:

"When I was on Hardball with Chris Matthews last week, I do believe firmly that a trap was laid, but I stepped into it," Bachmann said. "And I made a misstatement, and I made a comment that I would take back."

Oddly enough, Bachmann admitted to misspeaking, but still said that she did not question Barack Obama's patriotism -- not that she didn't mean to question his patriotism, but that she didn't do it.

National Republicans are feeling very frustrated with Bachmann right now, worried that her public buffoonery could end up costing them a seat that they barely had to worry at all about even one week ago.

Yeah, a trap. He asked me what I thought and I told him all the crazy shit that swirls around my warped mind. I should have known better...

user-pic

Is it me or it Michele Bachmann just getting more stupid as she speaks? IF someone ask me IF I or Barack Obama has anti-American views, uhmmmmm, should I respond yes, uhmmmmmm??!?!?!?! Although I don't think Barack Obama has anti-American views, I will answer yes - just for the hell of it.

user-pic

If you watch the interview (I know most of us have), Matthews was clearly incredulous when he asked the questions, essentially trying to get her to back down and say "No, I don't think Obama is un-American." She didn't back down.

Or I should say, she didn't blink. Those wild eyes of hers condemned her as much as her words did.

user-pic

Being an adult means taking responsibility for your own total, utter, clueless, anti-American screw-ups.

user-pic

Yes, but the pattern clear isn't it? Those crazy Repubs, including the McScum campaign, refuse to take ANY responsibility. They just keep whining, blaming others for everything going against them.

user-pic

Boo-friggin'-hoo Bachmann. "A trap was laid"? Bull. Shit.

http://thepajamapundit.com/

user-pic

A tramp was laid.

user-pic

By whom?

user-pic

Sloppy seconds?

Ya, you betcha!

user-pic

What's with all the passive voice? Palin does this too.

user-pic

I do believe they was stupid.

user-pic

She says as her finger keeps depressing that flusher!

user-pic

For how much longer must we endure these "gotcha journalists" and their scurrilous practice of asking questions?

user-pic

Translation: I was too stupid to realize where Chris was heading, and walked right into it. Please vote for me: I'll make you feel smart by comparison!

user-pic

Shit... it's awesome that GOP Fluffer and RoboCall Sleaze Merchant Jeff Larson is behind Sarah's buys:

http://www.theatlantic.com/doc/200810u/palin-clothes

Obama and the GOP might not use this, but you *know* that Al Frakken is cutting an add on this to use against Norm Coleman.

John

user-pic

The "I got confused so I talked for 45 minutes" excuse. Matthews could barely get a word in edgewise (and far from being tough on her, he just clarified a thing or two and let her talk. In retrospect I guess that was good).

user-pic

Let her talk indeed. Watching the exchange again Mathews visibly exerted effort remaining silent in order to just let her rather incredible rant get recorded for history. He even squirms a little bit working to keep quiet. I think it's pretty hard work for the guy, keeping quiet that is.

user-pic

Tweety trapped here by giving her a live mic to ramble into.

John

user-pic

I just love that woman. Her entertainment value is through the roof.

Yes, she's a wild-eyed lunatic. But that's what makes her so much fun.

user-pic

Now you understand why I come here for entertainment...

user-pic

all this time i thought you came here based on your tendency to find pleasure in self-denial, submissiveness and your willingness to subject yourself to unpleasant or trying experiences

user-pic

MEDIC!

user-pic

That's funny. I thought you were the entertainment.

user-pic

Don't you love this stuff? Such victims these Republican politicians, like they are babes in the woods or something. They slip on their own diarrhea of the mouth and want to blame it on someone else.

user-pic

Thanks to Right-Wingers, We Finally Get ‘PAST’ the 60’s, and Back to the 50’s!
http://satiricalpolitical.com/?p=4197

user-pic

Heh. Yes, Michelle, the trap was to let you speak your mind freely and without interruption. How devious of Matthews!

I love it. Tinklenburg could hardly ask for a more cooperative opponent - one who throws herself an anvil when she's drowning!

user-pic
National Republicans are feeling very frustrated with Bachmann right now, worried that her public buffoonery could end up costing them a seat that they barely had to worry at all about even one week ago.

I rather imagine that local Repugs are very frustrated with her as well - like, Norm Coleman, who is in a hell of a fight for his seat.

Let's all do the Schadenfreude Stomp!

user-pic

That trap, cost me $25.00 2 times, 1 donation to El Tinklenberg and 1 to Obama!

That if anything should cool the ardor of these wingnuts!

user-pic

She's just following the standard Republican routine. When caught, whiiiiiiiinnnnnnnneeeeee!

Being a Republican means never having to say you're sorry.

user-pic

Cosign.

user-pic

Didn't the Republicans used to be the part of personal responsibility?

user-pic

I had no idea Sarah Palin's sister was a congresswoman from Minnesota.

user-pic

Boy, I didn't realize it was so Patriotic to be dumb and irresponsible. Truly these folks have tortured the English language.

user-pic

These are the kooks who control the GOP.

Oh yeah!

user-pic

Hey, Michelle, go get your gun.  There's some kind of bug crawling on your other foot!

user-pic

LOL...and Ms. Bachmann did a face plant going for her arsenal before realizing that she'd already nailed that critter too.

user-pic

Bachmann was just on our local CBS affiliate, WCCO, where she repeated her lies about what happened. I'm assuming they'll put up a podcast later in the day. Here's the URL:

http://www.830wcco.com

It's really amazing to watch her try to lie her way out of this. The Republicans truly believe all people are as stupid as they are.

user-pic

PS: The show she was on is the Jack Rice show.

Wow, the Dow is really crashing right now. Down almost 700 points. I still think 8200 or thereabouts is the bottom. I'm bullish and I'm buying.

user-pic

Shorter Bachmann: I'm a moron.

http://pufferfish.typepad.com/

user-pic

Squirm, squirm, squirm!! LOL

user-pic

This woman, Katherine Harris and Sarah Palin, howmany more of these Stepfords are out there?

user-pic

GMTA! It's true they have been crawling out of the woodwork lately . . .

user-pic

Not Stepfords -

Bimbos for Christ.

user-pic

And they all look like Marilyn Quayle.

user-pic

They call up Anita Bryant for me. I AM old.

user-pic

Okay so what is the percentage of dingbats compared to normal women amongst the Republicans?

user-pic

Probably about the same as the percentage of jackasses compared to normal men.

user-pic

70 - 30 then?
:-P

user-pic

O bullshit = 80-20 is a lot closer to the truth.

;)

user-pic

She took it one step further, lets not forget, and called for the investigation of members of Congress, IIRC, who have "anti-American" views.

The sooner she is under the bus the better.

Did you see the looks on the faces in the audience? Not. Happy.

user-pic

I find it extremely hard to believe that she's never seen Tweety's show.

She's such a damned media whore that she had

C'mon. You just know she watches every TV appearance she makes, and Tivoes the ones she can't get to in real time.

user-pic

Oops. Once more, because sloppy tags ate my point! :)

I find it extremely hard to believe that she's never seen Tweety's show.

She's such a damned media whore that she had to have watched it at least once - when she was featured at the SOTU putting the lip-lock on W.

C'mon. You just know she watches every TV appearance she makes, and Tivoes the ones she can't get to in real time.

(Note to self: Preview is there for a reason...)

user-pic

Maybe I'm too optimistic, but isn't it a sign of the conservative apocalypse that even the wingnuttiest repugs are backing down from their commie-homo-terist accusations instead of just ramping them up the way they've done since Reagan?

user-pic

Hey, that's what I'm seeing.

And I don't care what I'm called - it won't be the first time, no matter what it is.

LOL!

user-pic

Conservatism is doing fine...that's why Obama's calling his welfare check a tax cut. The problem for us is there isn't a conservative in the race (unless you count Barr). It wasn't conservatism that lost the Republican's power, it was the party abandoning their conservative principles and jumping on the spending train before the Dems seats got cold. Limited government conservatism will bounce back next round. It'll just be a bigger bounce if Obama/Pelosi/Reid are in charge, as opposed to McCain/Pelosi/Reid.

user-pic

The problem you all have is that the "true conservatives" are no longer in control of the Republican party. The fiscal conservatives, the conservative intellectuals, the foreign policy realists...they've all been driven away or isolated during Karl Rove's quest for every-lasting power.

And please stop the drivel about Obama's "welfare check". Are you against a progressive tax system? Are you one of those "flat-tax" nutters? Perhaps we should stop poor people from driving on roads that they haven't contributed to....we should start checking to make sure people who play in parks are property owners that have paid property taxes to pay for these parks. The truth is that EVERY income tax system is "wealth redistribution". Even Adam Smith believed that those with the most should contribute more to society.

user-pic

That librul Adam Smith!

user-pic

bye bye

user-pic

I wonder who would believe such blatant lies, particulary if that person had seen the Hardball interview.

Unrelated, but still baffling, why is it that these Republican women find the need to wear so much blush. It isn't flattering and it is really distracting.

user-pic

I wish I knew.

Sarah Palin wears about 5 times too much blush and like you I find it really unflattering - they all like clowns.

user-pic

look like clowns.

Preview only works if you use it.

user-pic

They like (scary) clowns, too. That's why they voted for Bush, et al

user-pic

Nappy-headed hos?

user-pic

Takes that much to cover up the corpse pallor.

user-pic

She was trapped into saying what she really thinks. It was all very ... trappy.

user-pic

Matthews looked stunned that she would suggest a McCarthyesue test of Americanism/Patriotism. Did he trap her into saying "those words". I think not.

user-pic

LOL!!

user-pic

that was for benintn and "trappy" - I really like "trappy."

:)

user-pic

I can't wait to watch Hardball tonight. This is gonna be fun.

user-pic

Yes, it's all "his" fault....She is a "victim"..Now don't tell me you're "anti-victim" show you have compassion for victims and vote for Michelle....She's a knob, and I will be happy to see her go away. I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall Sat morning when El Tinkles campaign manager, called and woke him up with "Hey, we got about 400K last night, I don't know if it's a mistake or what...." "IT"S RAINING MONEY"!!!!

user-pic

Freeze the video on the face of the audience....it's priceless.

user-pic

Apparently Bachmann, Coleman, Klobuchar, Ellison and a couple of other elected officials have run into some vandalism here in MN. I'm guessing whoever it was was pissed over the bailout bill.

http://www.startribune.com/politics/national/senate/32329244.html?elr=KArksLckD8EQDUoaEyqyP4O:DW3ckUiD3aPc:_Yyc:aULPQL7PQLanchO7DiUs

user-pic

I understand that people are frustrated or angry or whatever...but that shit needs to stop. It's not acceptable - regardless of whether the targets are Republicans or Democrats.

user-pic

A Wicked Witch from The North this way comes.

Halloween falls on a Friday night, just before the election. I'm taking three days off of work - Nov. 3, 4 & 5 cause I'll wanna remember this whole affair till the livin' end. As well, I'll be so sore, so hoarse and hung over on the 5th it'll be impossible to concentrate. And I ain't ever had a hangover in my whole life!

user-pic

"And I ain't ever had a hangover in my whole life!"

You're not from MN! :)

user-pic

She wouldn't be stupid enough to say she'd never seen Hardball if she'd actually been on the show previously, would she? That would be just too delicious. Someone should ask Matthews if she was ever on before.

user-pic

Time/CNN Battleground Polls:

Nevada: Obama 51 McCain 46
North Carolina: Obama 51 McCain 47
Ohio: Obama 50 McCain 46
Virginia: Obama 54 McCain 44
West Virginia: McCain 53 Obama 44

http://thepage.time.com/

user-pic

Looking good!

West Virginia turning blue, ain't gonna happen.

I want to see some Pennsylvania numbers, just to show McCain and his crew how useless his new strategy would be. Also, some Montana and N. Dakota.

user-pic

"Curse you, Chris Matthews! You tricked me! You just sat there letting me shoot my mouth off without interrupting! It's all your fault! You didn't stop me from making an ass of myself!"

Ah yes. The Republican Party, the party of personal accountability.

user-pic

Moved by a Crescent
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/22/opinion/22dowd.html

I just read Maureen Dowd's editorial on Colin Powell's endorsement of Obama. It seems the nutters are after Powell now.

Significant to the story and Powell's endorsement is the picture of the young soldier's mother at his grave at the New Yorker. Very compelling. You can see why Powell stared at the photo for over an hour.

user-pic

...she just does'nt get it...she keeps digging the hole deeper trying to deflect blame from her own misstatements...her explanation is simply too transparent to believe, especially after watching the excerpts from the interview...she should've just apologized and moved on but she continues to not take responsibility for her verbiage...i may just send another donation to Tinklenberg...just come clean lady...repent and control the damage

...looking at the big picture, it is clear that Republicans are somewhat disgruntled right now as their party faces something close/akin to extinction on the national stage...add Palin's 150K shopping spree at Sak's/Neiman's and it's clear that conservatives are hatin life right now...just bad news all around...the dow loses 650 points and McCain's lashing out at conservatives who question Palin's qualifications...oh what a day!...another dismal news cycle for Republicans to obfuscate...priceless.

user-pic

And it's been like this for weeks, too.

It just keeps on being a very bad time to be a Repug.

user-pic

Okay, I have a favor to ask. I am in CA, and we now have gay marriage as legal. Some wing nuts got enough signatures to get an amendment added to the constitution banning gay marriage if voting passes Prop. 8. We need lots of NO votes on this to stop this insanity. Even Arnold is against amending the constitution. I would not be posting but this was a slam dunk to defeat and now it is getting really close. So could anyone from CA help spread the word to vote NO on this? BTW, I am straight as can be, but damn, I am sick of this moral crap on our ballots. Thanks for letting me rant too.

user-pic

Andrew Sullivan has been all over Prop 8.

Good luck out there. It's looking very close.

user-pic

Thanks :)

user-pic

You know that James Dobson's Focus on the Family is pumping a ton of money into ads. I'm voting no, but it is getting increasingly difficult to convince anyone else to. That whole "teaching same sex marriage in schools" rant appears to be working.

Focus on the Family is also behind the parental notification before abortion prop, which was just on the ballot a couple of years ago. I'm so sick of these people and their invasive agenda.

user-pic

Sullivan had a big post about the Mormon church's involvement as well:

http://andrewsullivan.theatlantic.com/the_daily_dish/2008/10/the-mormon-chur.html

user-pic

Me too.

This site will match even the smallest donation.

http://www.actblue.com/page/madprofessah/

Thanks all.

user-pic

Visit Daily Kos, Amelie. They've been having front page fundraisers for no on H8. Kos is worth visiting anyway. I don't think they've done propositions for awhile, but this rolls out that liberal crowd with a vengeance.

user-pic

Oooops.
http://www.dailykos.com/
There you go.

user-pic

She's going to hell in a bucket.

user-pic

Obama's race, name and background, rather than being liabilities, have turned into assets in this way: The prospect of him winning is having the salutary effect of driving the wingnuts absolutely bonkers, leading them to expose their true colors (so to speak) with their Bachmann-like rants (real America, real Virginia, liberals hate America, etc.). Thus they are driving away any independents and Republicans who have a sense of decency.

user-pic

This is a woman who, finding herself in a hole, doesn't just look for a bigger shovel. She finds herself a backhoe.

user-pic

This is from Politico:

Backed by a three-person communications staff — a press secretary for national media, a press secretary for local media and a staffer to handle the blogs and other new media — Bachmann has volunteered herself for the attention she’s enjoying a little less this week.

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1008/14776.html

She has three freakin' press secretaries. And we're to believe that she's never seen Hardball??

Sorry, not buyin' it.

user-pic

Oh, I buy it - all they ever watch is Fox, and all they ever listen to on the radio is Hannity and Limbaugh.

I have been stunned by the ignorance of what's going on in their own town by repug coworkers who literally never peek out of the Fox cocoon.

user-pic

He trapped her? "Trapper Bachmann!"

Give me a break -- there are Amish who have seen Hardball.

user-pic

I like watching Bachmann chew her leg off to get out of this, and applaud her ability to keep the frozen smile plastered on all the while.

user-pic

So..... she's saying Chris Matthews did the Jedi mind trick on her?!?

What's next, during her next campaign appearance she says "These aren't the droids you're looking for."

user-pic

These Republicant Jesus bimbos (Palin, Pfotenschnauser, Coulter, Bachmann, Turner, Overdrive) all must huff hairspray and holy water.

Think about it. Kissing Bush?! Shilling for Bosley (McQuack). Thinking The Flintstones was a documentary.

I think they all apply makeup with concrete trowels. Tres Chique!

user-pic

Bachmann is a crazy right wing woman of the same flavor as Ann Coulter, Sarah Palin, and Michelle Malkin. She knew full well what she was being asked, and she expounded on it. The only trap there was her own mouth; she ate foot, and has no one to blame but herself.

user-pic

What is it with all these psycho Republican women?

user-pic

Matthews did bait her, but only because she invited it. Anybody with more than two brain cells could see where he was going. Her mistake was losing her cool enough to let her real opinions come out.

Anyone that stupid shouldn't be serving in congress.

user-pic

See it for yourself: A McCarthy-Bachmann mashup: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jOzv6KmKJEw

user-pic

yea matthews made you say it sure we all belive you this is one part of the election I am watching close hope she loses big for this

user-pic

If she loses her election does that mean she has to quit the botox injections? Look, the woman's forehead doesn't move when she speaks...spooky.

user-pic

Obama’s nomination has made our country a complete mess and an embarrassment for the world to view.

Obama and his team of supporters have reared the ugly head of sexism and racism, criticized our country to the world and have been a complete embarrassed with voter fraud and the entire voting process.

Many in my community have never seen such bias in reporting, if you want to call it that. It is an embarrassing time to be an American.

The media should be emphasizing the importance of a man with good character, not defend a man that has associations with far left, anti American radical leaders and the like.

Shame on the media, shame on the Democrats and all Americans that support Obama’s unfair tactics and lack of experience.

user-pic

Bachmann is getting a free ride from the press here in the cities. Her defense that she was not equipped and prepared to deal with a tough interview has receive rather sympathetic treatment in this morning's Star-Tribune. Her rant was so clearly a talking point rant that she deserves no quarter.

Best bet: Her final line of defense will be, "The Devil made me say it."

user-pic

Mark Souder Republican IN-3 is being challenged for reelection by Mike Montagano:

http://www.montaganoforcongress.com/index.asp.

Souder stepped forward at a GOP news conference two days ago about Michelle Bachman's statements on Matthews show and supported Bachman by declaring:

"Chris Matthews tried to trick her into that question, over and over for the entire interview. Unfortunately, her last comment, she fell for the trap." He then proceeded to warn that "Senator Obama should be careful who he pals around with." This is "Watch what you say; Watch what you do" all over again.

Haven't we had enough of this fearmongering? Souder is an authoritarian, far right-wing Republican neocon whose hero is James Dobson. He supports torture of detainees, voted against equal pay for equal work for women, supports the policizing of science; the list of his bad decisions goes on and on.
