Bachmann: Chris Matthews Trapped Me!
Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN), whose re-election has been put in serious danger thanks to her McCarthyist rant on Hardball -- not to mention her ham-fisted attempts at denying she ever said it -- is now admitting that she misspoke.
But it gets even better: Bachmann is blaming Chris Matthews for her gaffe, telling a Rotary Club event in her district yesterday that she had never seen Hardball and should have avoided the trap Matthews laid for her:
"When I was on Hardball with Chris Matthews last week, I do believe firmly that a trap was laid, but I stepped into it," Bachmann said. "And I made a misstatement, and I made a comment that I would take back."
Oddly enough, Bachmann admitted to misspeaking, but still said that she did not question Barack Obama's patriotism -- not that she didn't mean to question his patriotism, but that she didn't do it.
National Republicans are feeling very frustrated with Bachmann right now, worried that her public buffoonery could end up costing them a seat that they barely had to worry at all about even one week ago.

Yeah, a trap. He asked me what I thought and I told him all the crazy shit that swirls around my warped mind. I should have known better...

Is it me or it Michele Bachmann just getting more stupid as she speaks? IF someone ask me IF I or Barack Obama has anti-American views, uhmmmmm, should I respond yes, uhmmmmmm??!?!?!?! Although I don't think Barack Obama has anti-American views, I will answer yes - just for the hell of it.

If you watch the interview (I know most of us have), Matthews was clearly incredulous when he asked the questions, essentially trying to get her to back down and say "No, I don't think Obama is un-American." She didn't back down.
Or I should say, she didn't blink. Those wild eyes of hers condemned her as much as her words did.

The "I got confused so I talked for 45 minutes" excuse. Matthews could barely get a word in edgewise (and far from being tough on her, he just clarified a thing or two and let her talk. In retrospect I guess that was good).

Let her talk indeed. Watching the exchange again Mathews visibly exerted effort remaining silent in order to just let her rather incredible rant get recorded for history. He even squirms a little bit working to keep quiet. I think it's pretty hard work for the guy, keeping quiet that is.

Conservatism is doing fine...that's why Obama's calling his welfare check a tax cut. The problem for us is there isn't a conservative in the race (unless you count Barr). It wasn't conservatism that lost the Republican's power, it was the party abandoning their conservative principles and jumping on the spending train before the Dems seats got cold. Limited government conservatism will bounce back next round. It'll just be a bigger bounce if Obama/Pelosi/Reid are in charge, as opposed to McCain/Pelosi/Reid.
October 22, 2008 4:34 PM | Reply | Permalink
The problem you all have is that the "true conservatives" are no longer in control of the Republican party. The fiscal conservatives, the conservative intellectuals, the foreign policy realists...they've all been driven away or isolated during Karl Rove's quest for every-lasting power.
And please stop the drivel about Obama's "welfare check". Are you against a progressive tax system? Are you one of those "flat-tax" nutters? Perhaps we should stop poor people from driving on roads that they haven't contributed to....we should start checking to make sure people who play in parks are property owners that have paid property taxes to pay for these parks. The truth is that EVERY income tax system is "wealth redistribution". Even Adam Smith believed that those with the most should contribute more to society.

Obama’s nomination has made our country a complete mess and an embarrassment for the world to view.
Obama and his team of supporters have reared the ugly head of sexism and racism, criticized our country to the world and have been a complete embarrassed with voter fraud and the entire voting process.
Many in my community have never seen such bias in reporting, if you want to call it that. It is an embarrassing time to be an American.
The media should be emphasizing the importance of a man with good character, not defend a man that has associations with far left, anti American radical leaders and the like.
Shame on the media, shame on the Democrats and all Americans that support Obama’s unfair tactics and lack of experience.

Souder stepped forward at a GOP news conference two days ago about Michelle Bachman's statements on Matthews show and supported Bachman by declaring:
"Chris Matthews tried to trick her into that question, over and over for the entire interview. Unfortunately, her last comment, she fell for the trap." He then proceeded to warn that "Senator Obama should be careful who he pals around with." This is "Watch what you say; Watch what you do" all over again.
