Bachmann Challenger Raises Big Bucks Since Her Hardball Appearance

The campaign of El Tinklenberg, the Democratic challenger against Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN), announced today that they've raised about half a million dollars in the time since she let loose on Hardball with her claims that Barack Obama may be anti-American and that the media should undertake a full investigation into which members of Congress are anti-American.

Tinklenberg still faces an up-hill battle, though, as this district voted 57%-42% for George W. Bush in 2004. So the question for him is whether there has been enough of a turn against Bush Republicanism -- and especially against Bachmann's extreme version of it -- for him to pull off an upset.

Joe McCarthy is indeed paying big dividends. Keep 'em comin'!

user-pic

Any news on what the polls are for him this election (with or without the current Bachmann fiasco)?

user-pic

Latest poll from pollster.com...

On 10-12
Bachman leads 41-32.5

user-pic

Feh.  Now that we've got a preview tool, I should learn to use it!

The poll cited showing a four-point lead was a Dem poll.  It also says a GOP poll outs the lead at five points.

user-pic

She was up by four on Thursday, according to a Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee poll. Realistically she was probably a little further ahead than that.

I'm active in MN DFL politics so I can add a little about this race - as it was pointed out, it's not our best CD in the state - went for bush by 15 points or so.

However, there are a few things going in our favor so if folks are considering contributing, the answer is yes it is worth your while.

One, incidents like yesterday's are helping to contribute to a perception that Bachmann is weird - political activists have always known this, but I'm talking about that message getting to regular folks who don't have time to follow politics.

Two, it is my understanding that recent polls show that Dubya's popularity in the district has plummeted just as it has elsewhere, so Bachmann is kind of on her own now - hence her recent attempts to distance herself from the guy she couldn't let go of at the State of the Union.

Three, El Tinklenberg is a really good candidate. He used to be the Mayor of a very large suburb anchored in the middle of the CD, and he used to be the state Transportation Commissioner in the Jesse Ventura administration, helping to give him appeal beyond just the DFL base (and by the way, Jesse was good on transportation issues, supporting commuter rail along with DFLers while GOPers fought it).

Tinklenberg is also a good speaker and pretty mainstream. The only thing he seemed to be short on was money - so if it pours in now, I think you'd have to rate this race a tossup now.

We DFLers know Bachmann well here, so what she said didn't surprise us so much, but folks who haven't been paying attention will be shocked by her extremism.

Thanks for your reply and context. What local media play has there been re: Bachmann? I read somewhere else that her comments were getting play but not that he has raised so much $...

user-pic

Thanks for the context. I kicked in a few $ from down here in Chicago, and would urge others who can to do so. My brother in law, a minister, who lives just north of St Paul along with his wife gave me a full rundown on her; I haven't often seen him quite so animated.

user-pic

I kicked in what I could, I also sent some $$ to Jim Martin who is closing fast on the despicable Saxby Chambliss in Georgia.

That guy deserves to be beaten more than most of the slimier repugs...

user-pic

Hey, there're lots of places that went for Bush by big margins in '04 where even comparatively sane Republicans are in trouble this year.

user-pic

Why has a first-term congresswoman received the kind of media play that she has? Why is she the GOP standard-bearer on MSNBC, CNN et al? Is it that no one (relatively) sane will carry the water any longer?

user-pic

Um, are you talking about the party that has Sarah Failin on their presidential ticket?

user-pic

Ah, ok, so the Repubs push every woman they have into the foreground. But aren't there more experienced women they could send out as surrogates? Or perhaps they really do want to send out their lunatic fringe as much as possible.

user-pic

Seriously, I'd guess GOP guys with a modicum of sanity don't want to play an active surrogate role for the whackjob campaign. And those with a modicum of rationality desperately want to distance themselves from it (e.g., Collins).

And then there were none... only whacks remain out there to be a surrogate for the whacks.

user-pic
Is it that no one [GOP'er] (relatively) sane will carry the water any longer?

They're all scared shitless and are holding their water 'til Nov. 4.

user-pic

I read on another thread, in another blog, that Bachmann's challenger in the Republican primary has started a write-in campaign, in light of her comments. If true, that would siphon off some of her votes, tightening the race even further.

user-pic

It may be weeks before the image of that phony frozen smile of hers leaves my head.

user-pic

Her freaky zombie like stare bugs my wife out big time.

user-pic

Hopefully just 17 days until she gets defeated...

user-pic

Criminently! Get permission from Hardball to put that clip of Bachmann's "anti-American" rantings (slightly sped up) in an ad, ending with the text overlay: "Do you really want this nutcase representing you in Congress?" ...(pause, fade)... Pictures of El Tinklenberg outdoors talking with real people; El's voiceover: "It's time to bring common sense, and the voice of the people, back to the Congress. I'm Elwyn Tinklenberg, and I approved this message."

user-pic

Is there a recording of the list speech? Running that or the Army hearings up against the Hardball clip should get the message across quite well...

user-pic

Her wide-eyed stare and Stepford grin are the mark of a raving lunatic.

Jorovsky called it right. There are a lot of people who don't pay attention to politics who would have figured "Oh she's not that bad." Hopefully this raises their awareness a bit.

user-pic
Her wide-eyed stare and Stepford grin are the mark of a raving lunatic.

I get the same impression from Cindy McSame.

Except that with Cindy, you figure SHE's making the robots.

I read that "Holiday with John McCain" on two other Obama-supporting blogs several days ago. The blog owner/administrator commented that while the story could be true, no one had confirmed it with the purported author, and there had been a reasonable effort to find her. I don't see that this blog has confirmed it either. I don't recall the names of the other blogs, but Google "Holiday with John McCain" and see if anyone's confirmed this before passing it on as true.

user-pic

Others have investigated and found she is a real person with SF addresses over the past 10 years and someone vouching they know her husband.

This could be like Ann Kilkenny, the woman from AK who sent around an email. Lots of people doubted it's veracity or her existence. But now she's even on video.

Why people would doubt a story that fits so well with the bio of the repub candidate is beyond me. Let the nay-sayers disprove this. I'm so tired of awful repubs, like Clarence Thomas, making themselves out to be victims and smearing honest women, like Anita Hill.

There's a pattern here.

user-pic

I checked out the Neil Young.com story...Whoa.

Dare I dig up something I read in the stone ages? I can't help thinking; this is so much bigger than the mere failure of John McCain. Somehow, Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment comes to mind...Am I off? I mean, this is about the fall of the RNC. And the murder of America. Right? Gonna get a cheap copy off Amazon.

Misogyny is non-partisan.

And snark is filling? Respectful discourse is illuminating.

user-pic

Did Katherine Harris move north and change her name to Michele Bachmann? Put Harris, Bachmann and Palin together and women's rights are set back a hundred years.

user-pic

Oy Vey! I knew she reminded me of someone....You nailed it!

user-pic

As a former resident of Minnesota, I was one of those horrified by Bachman's performance on Hardball. Watching the show, I couldn't believe anyone in Minnesota had voted for this person. I went immediately to Bachman's You Tube site and saw the outrage that was being voiced there in dozens of angry e-mails. I then went to El Tinklenberg's You Tube site--so modest, so kind, so "Minnesota nice"--and I promptly contributed $50 to his campaign. Since Bachman is a national embarassment, El needs national support.

user-pic

Obama netted 150 K in Sept!

user-pic

sorry.... 150 mil.

user-pic

All El Tinklenberg's needs to do is put Michelle Bachmann, in her own words telling newspapers to do an "expose" on anti-American members of Congress; that shyt speaks for itself.

user-pic

I live in Ohio and just donated $50. This chick must be removed from office. Not surprising that she attended Coburn University (A failed school founded by Oral Roberts) and is married to a guy who attended Regent university(Founded by Pat Robertson)...YUCK!!

Although I am a bit concerned about the electability of a guy named Tinkleberg.....

user-pic

It's Tinklenberg, and I'm guessing is Scandanavian and probably has some meaning concerning mountain if I am not way off. I donated too.

Careful now, it's supposed to be okay in this country to have a name unlike the ones others are familiar and comfortable with- unless to some it's "un-American"- isn't it?

user-pic

Thanks for the correction...I personally dont care about his name, but being the challenger in a suburban republican district...They just might.

user-pic

Ja, Tinklenberg is Swedish, and if you look at the names of some of the towns in the east end of that District (New Scandia Township for instance) you might just guess there are a few Swedes there. But there is more...

El Tinklenberg is not only involved in politics, he is a ELCA Supply Pastor, ELCA being the big merger of most of the Lutheran Churches in the US. For years, El has been filling in for Pastors who die, get sick, travel, etc, until a new permanent pastor can be appointed. So he is networked all over the Swedish end of the 6th District.

The NE part of the 6th district is world famous if you are interested in Swedish settlement in the US. It is the setting for Wilhelm Moberg's novels, (4 of them) that make up "The Emigrant" series. The Swedes made a movie, which then was remastered for TV -- all of which was shot in the area -- featuring Liv Ullman. Won an Oskar back in the 70's. In fact last night Garrison Keillor had a chorus on that is part of a new Swedish opera, "Christina," based on the Moberg stories, and he noted that there might soon be an English production in the Twin Cities. So no harm at all in being a Swedish Lutheran Pastor with a Swedish Name in the 6th District of Minnesota. What's more, the Swedish voters in the District tend Republican, but are not Social Conservatives, and in many respects have been run out of the Republican Party by the current leadership -- Republican Party Chair is the former head of the Christian Coalition. Bush's favorables stand at 18% in the district as a whole, which is quite different from the vote he got in 2004.

Given that Bachmann's margin of victory in 2006 can be accounted for by the Independence Party having a good candidate in the race, who took about 9% of the vote, and that this year, Jesse Ventura (leader of Independence Party) has endorsed Tinklenberg, as have many "I's" in that district -- there is a good chance Bachmann can be defeated. Tinklenberg's strengths are alternative energy and public transit.

user-pic

Every time I read Tinklenberg's name and of course that has only been in the last couple of days, I think about Rose on the Golden Girls.
Anyway, read about Bachmann and made a donation too. Once in awhile, in politics, we run into some real lulus, but Bachmann and Palin both in the same year, is incredulous. I like my Congressman and he is pro-American as you can get-That's Steny Hoyer.

user-pic

Darn! Thought I was previewing. Apologies for the double post.

Joe McCarthy redux.

This witch hunter in the 21st century is dangeous. She'd be the 1st one holding a torch in the next lynch mob.

user-pic

Let's get real! In order for McCain to just TIE Obama with 269 electoral votes, he has to win the states of Nevada, North Dakota, Missouri, Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, New Hampshire and Florida. He has to win them ALL just to TIE Obama at 269 electoral votes. In order for Obama to win, all he has to do is win ONE of those states! ONE!

user-pic

So... here's the closest Tailgunner quote I can find to match the charming sentiments of Ms. Bachmann... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jOzv6KmKJEw

Is this "Lipstick on a Storm Trooper" or just the political ghost of Katherine Harris rearing it's fetid little head?

I live in Minnesota, as well, but happily live in Rep Betty McCollum's district.

Rep Bachmann is just a nut. She could be Caribou Barbie's long lost twin sister separated at birth--same Christianist viewpoint, same anti-intellectuallism, same anti-science and anti-objective knowledge perspectives.

I believe that El Tinklenberg is a good choice for that district because he is a moderate or even conservative Democrat who is well known in that part of the state. If I remember the boundaries of this district correctly, it also includes a portion of central Minnesota that is traditionally Catholic, which should be good for him, considering his more moderate social views. He is also sane (which by itself is an improvement over MB) and is able to work with people. Rep Bachmann is completing her first term, so the district will not lose much seniority if they change horses now. I hope that they do.

I will be sending El a contribution. He really would be a vast improvement over the current incumbent.

user-pic

I live in another state and was so offended I donated to his campaign. She sounded like a modern day McCarthy

user-pic

Another disgusting repug up for re-election is Jim Inhofe here in Oklahoma. He's spending like crazy on disgusting negative ads. Inhofe is the schmuck who still says that global warming is not man-made! He's a despicable politician and an embarassment to our state.

If you can, visit www.andrewforoklahoma.com, the web-site of his opponent Andrew Rice who would make a GREAT senator, and donate if possible.

Spread the word!

Congresswoman Bachmann is a better politician than many people realize.

She is energetic; she is attractive in person (but doesn't do well on camera, does she!); she has fanatically zealous supporters from the megachurch she belongs to, as well as from similar congregations; she knows how to "stay on message" in her campaigns---the message being "I'm the one to hold down taxes"; she has the anti-abortion vote locked up tight (extremely significant in her CD!); in short, she can be compared quite neatly with Sarah Palin in many respects. Michele doesn't mind telling people that she sends her husband out to buy her frocks. But she also testifies that she believes as St. Paul commands, that the husband is superior to the wife.

When she was first elected to the state legislature, I overheard her tell a group of constituents, in all sincerity:

"Jesus Christ sent me to St. Paul to save your children from socialism."

["Socialism" in this context meant the state public educational system, I think.]

Her CD was especially gerrymandered to provide a perpetual Republican seat in Congress; it would be nice if El Tinklenberg could pull off an upset here. I sent him a couple of contributions, but it really will take something like the active intervention of Providence to dislodge her . . .

But since she absolutely believes she herself has a direct pipeline to the Almighty, just like her erstwhile heart-throb Junior Bush does, and I have no reason to dispute her confidence, I expect we WILL have Bachmann around to embarrass us for a while. If she LOSES, then I will seriously consider QUITTING the local atheist group I belong to.

user-pic

While Bachmann is still favored to win this CD, she did her campaign a LOT of damage this weekend. Here's today's Star/Trib assesment:

http://www.startribune.com/politics/state/31261989.html?elr=KArksD:aDyaEP:kD:aU2EkP7K_t:aDyaEP:kD:aUiD3aPc:_Yyc:aUU

The paper reports 48 hour contributions to Tinklenberg of $640,000 - more than he previously received during the entire 3rd quarter. Another reason for hope is that Tinklenberg is endorsed by the Independance party - which polls as high as 20% and has been responsible for such recent features of MN politics as Jesse Ventura. (be careful what you wish for, people who want 3rd parties).
