Are Republicans The Victims Of Their Own Success In Slime-Trafficking?

One has to wonder whether McCain and the Republicans are, in a sense, victims of their own success in playing the slime game.

They've thrown so much vicious stuff at Barack Obama via robocalls, mailers, ads, and the like -- and they've succeeded in doing it so comprehensively -- that it seems likely that it has lost its potency, if it ever had any at all. It seems fair to speculate that the paper slime currency that the GOP has been printing at such a furious rate has lost all its value.

Call it DSD syndrome -- Defining Slime Down.

Take, for instance, the mailer below from the Republican National Committee that's getting attention today (even though HuffPo first posted it five days ago). It shows a plane about to hit an airport and says: "Barack Obama thinks terrorists just need a good talking to."

Is this really going to shock anyone? Is it going to move voters in any meaningful numbers? Doubtful.

Multiple polls show that one of these attacks -- the one on Obama's association with William Ayers -- has been a flop. I suspect that if there were polling on the GOP's more generic efforts to insinuate that Obama is linked to or sympathetic towards terrorists in various other ways -- such as in the mailer below -- it would find the same.

Either way, at this point, when McCain or the RNC links Obama to terrorists in one way or another it's just a dog bites man story.

Yes, I suspect it's because people know to take anything that comes from the RNC with a boulder of salt. Except for those in Sarah Palin's "real America," people are suspicious of anything a Republican says. They simply don't have the credibility to launch attacks this year.

user-pic

I also suspect that the tattered Republican brand has a great deal to do with their ineffective negative advertising. People already blame Republicans for much of the past eight years, so when they receive a robocall or a flyer from the RNC, it tends to re-inforce their negative view of the Republican Party.

user-pic

Atrios noted yesterday that sucessful Republican smear tactics involved latching on to a narrative such as Kerry the flip-flopper and repeating it ad nauseum until Chris Matthews believes it's common knowledge. Instead, McCain has run an "another day, another smear" campaign, and voters do appear fed up with their incessant crying of "wolf, muslim, Wright, Rezko, elitist, presumptuous, terrorist, celebrity, empty suit, un-American!" or whatever else they will cry out tomorrow. It's definitely gotten old.

user-pic

They tried that early on with the 'Celebrity' ads. It got them a little traction for a little while, but as Obama presented more and more substance it was seen as a dumb line of attack.

What made GOP negative campaigning work in the past is that they always (kind of) had something to back it up - being 'tough on terrorism' (when they could still capitalize on fear), 'strong on the economy' (before they broke everything), or the 'party of personal responsibility' (before Larry Craig's tap-dance in the airport, among other scandals).

Now the economy's broken, the war drags on, and the party is widely viewed as being infested with perversion and corruption. Kinda hard to sell any of the old talking points when members of your own party has proven them false.

user-pic

snark

Now hold on here! I feel like I must stop you here and take a stand in support of perversion and corruption. I've sat here long enough listening to you liberal snot nosed elitist brats knock good old cornholein' tea baggin' money grubbin' amurikan politics by golly!

As decent pro-amurikan citizens of the Real amurika we need to all whip it out at once and come together to stamp out this radical reactionary un-pancriatic Democracy that uppity negro is trying to force on us!

/snark

user-pic

we need to all whip it out at once and come together

LOL! Nicely done.

user-pic

We can make it through an actual terrorist attack. Likewise, we can make it through propaganda centering on terrorist attacks. The majority of Americans can see through it for what it is, political propaganda. With internet being what it is, there are more options for where to turn for news. People circumvent the crap to get to the truth. Americans are starving for truth. They can see crap when it comes in the mail, through the phone, on tv, wherever. You reap what you sow. Fruition can be a bitch.

user-pic

Well, not to channel Jonze or anything, but perhaps these fliers aren't meant to change minds NOW, but are acting as a prime, should any sort of (God forbid) terrorist attack take place in the next two weeks.

user-pic

Also it's well known that you can run a successful negative campaign only if voters like you- if they don't, your opponent is rubber and you're glue. Sadly for McCain, he has a substantial and still growing net negative approval rating.

user-pic

Doubtless doesn't help their case that they're no longer in complete control of the media narrative. Every time Maverickthulhu goes on the air he gets quizzed about the spurious accusations he's made re: Ayers and has to re-assert "It's all true. But my campaign's about the economy!" Which, as responses go, is not only schizoid as hell but a neat narrative encapsulation of the massive FAIL that is the McCampaign.

user-pic

Maverickthulhu

Hey, hey, hey! That's a totally unfair smear! Don't be dissing Cthulhu like that!

Love this comment:

I hope this is true, and only happening to Obama voters. Otherwise, I'm very concerned that Hussein is going to end up as President. The thought alone makes me cringe.

Nothing encapsulizes IOKIYAR than this comment.

user-pic

God, I wish people would stop and think before they use voting machines. have the last two presidential elections taught them nothing at all? Even if you can't sign up for permanent vote-by-mail, you can at least get an absentee ballot. Why wait in line? Why have your tires slashed? Why get rained on? Why get intimidated by republican snots just laying in wait? I am going to sit down at my kitchen table, fill out the ballot carefully, and put it in the mail. I have a far, far better chance of getting my vote counted.

user-pic

again today:

http://wvgazette.com/News/200810200711

wonder how many votes out of the 20,000+ already cast there are for mccain when a vote for obama was intended?

user-pic

I wonder what if it does not go to McCain but the vote actually does? It could never be caught by voters if that happens. And I just can't shake off such a possibility given their voter suppression efforts.

user-pic

BTW, McCain's "totally" proud of that terrorist mailer.

Oozing deeper and deeper into slime every day.

user-pic

You know, he doesn't think much before uttering extreme words like "absolutely," "totally," etc. "We are all Georgian" is a logical extension of that. Takes no time before burning his bridge and closing all the way out. That scares the crap out of me.

user-pic

No fuzzy thinker, that McCain. The world as he sees it is purely GI/GO.

Unless you disagree with him, in which case it's time for beatings.

user-pic

The classic example is when McScum mis-heard the Puerto Rican interviewer and thought she was asking about some Latin American leader instead of the president of Spain.

They couldn't admit he made a mistake, even a very understandable one like that, so they had to pretend he meant what he was thought to have said and that the Spanish prez was really on his shit-list.

user-pic

They haven't reduced the value of slime, they're just both too late and too obvious with it. most voters already have a (good) impression of obama, and these attacks are not really believable.

Calling Kerry a flip-flopper or a poser worked when under 40% of voters had an opinion about him. Calling Obama a terrorist does not, when almost 90% already think they know him.

Especially not now, after seeing him with his kids.

user-pic

Either way, at this point, when McCain or the RNC links Obama to terrorists in one way or another it's just a dog bites man story.

A crazy old dog with rabies that barks too much, at that.

This is central to my point:

Anecdote

Despite chatter about McCain abandoning other states for Pennsylvania, I've noticed a drop off in McCain ads locally. Perhaps I just don't watch enough Matlock.

Apologies for being O/T, but Obama's grandmother has a broken hip:

user-pic

Thank you for this. Often a broken hip leads to health decline, many of these geriatrics often end of dying of pneumonia.

user-pic

Yikes. A broken hip at her age can be fatal.

user-pic

Check this out. Even the racists are voting for Obama now!

http://www.fivethirtyeight.com/2008/10/on-road-western-pennsylvania.html

user-pic

Holy sh*t! "We're votin' for the n****r." If McCain can't turn these people over, he's just wanking away his reputation.

user-pic

I just watched a video where Chuck Todd said the only state he is confident of for McCain is Ohio. Is Ohio a sure thing then for McCain? I know some of you are from there, your opinion?

user-pic

I'm in Columbus (at home) right now.

I don't think McCain is a sure win here. But I feel that Virginia is a more likely pickup for Obama.

Sadly, there's a whole lot of bitter folk in the Southwest corner of the state.

user-pic

Why is that? Are they older and mostly white? Can they just not bring themselves to vote for a bi-racial person? I don't understand it. Maybe they are just low informed voters?

user-pic

They're the people who put Jean Schmidt in office.

In other words, yes to all of your questions.

user-pic

I think it's more that people have so much access to information, and it's so conveniently available. It's become harder to pull the proverbial wool over voter’s eyes. If you tell me Barack will raise my taxes. I can simply use "the Google", and find that is false.

In years past, you could say one thing in NY and say another thing in VA, but with the culture of instant information that has come increasingly difficult to pull off.

MOST people simply see past the BS.

user-pic

Palin: Well, check this out, this woman is SO damn dumb. She screwed this up before and obviously she doesn't even understand her potential job. If you watch, rather than read it, the question is the last 38 seconds of the interview. OMG.

http://thinkprogress.org/2008/10/21/palin-vp-senate/

user-pic

Not to sound too catty, but...

What the hell is she wearing in that interview? A Members Only jacket?

Jeez, Sarah. The 80s called and they want their wardrobe back.

user-pic

Now that is too funny :)

user-pic

She looks like she's wearing the jacket Michael Jackson wore in the 'Thriller' video.

Do Republican women forfeit their fashion sense when they decide to run for office or something?

user-pic

That's exactly what my husband said last night when we saw a clip of her speech. All she needs now is a chimp. . .

user-pic

Any bets on how soon Biden will refer to this gaffe in his rallies?

user-pic

One more reason to end this lady's bid for any future national office.

user-pic

Campaign Diaries suggests that the reason McCain is more invested in PA than in CO is that there is early voting in the latter and not in the former - so if McCain tightens the race it would be easier to make PA competitive. What do you guys think?

user-pic

That makes some sense. I still think the internal poll numbers must have been very bleak for McCain.

user-pic

Dysfunctional Sociopath Disease

user-pic

I suspect they know these ads aren't going to change any minds. They're not aimed at independent voters. They're aimed at their base. They need to get the knuckle-draggers whipped up to get out and vote. That's about all they've got.

user-pic

Good point

user-pic

I still say all the slime stems from a single source:

McCain's barely suppressed primal scream:

"I can't believe I'm losing to that uppity ni**er!"

The vicious, violent racism is entirely McCain's doing; it comes directly from his own id.

I think that's what people sense: the slime is not a campaign tactic; it's not the last gasp of Rove; it's the Real John McCain, exposed at last.

user-pic

The problem for Republicans is that people like Obama. That goes for people that are not even going to vote for him. According to R2000, Obama's favorables are at 60% even though only 50% are voting for him.

It is like someone talking trash about your mother. It only make them look bad. (Also makes them look like they want a butt kicking).

Btw McCain's favorables are at 43% and his vote is at 42%. Only the people currently voting for McCain like him. Obama on the other hand has 10% more than are currently voting for him. These are the people McCain needs but have a built in immunity to the sleaze tactics against Obama.

user-pic

Excellent point.

I wonder if one reason Democrats are so giddy about Obama is that it's been so very, very long since we had a nominee we actually liked - who wasn't just a decent chance to get rid of the repugs.

Who was the last Democratic presidential nominee who had Obama's favorables?

Maybe JFK; probably FDR.

user-pic

They could have stuck with the celebrity/inexperience narrative if McCain simply picked an experienced hand to be his VP. Instead it showed that McCain was jealous of the rallies and wanted his own big crowds and went for Palin.

Regarding Pennsylvania, I think the internals are showing a closer race, however I also think it's a lot to do with ego, and McCain wants to be seen as on the offensive. He wants to make Obama defend a State.

user-pic

View it as a positive:

McCain is pulling pages from the same book that Hillary used during the primary. Obama was (apparently) very effective at neutralizing those attacks. We now get to see if he's even better the second time around. ;-)

The more the right tries to swerve right, and the more the left can peel off the more centrist voters, the quicker this wing fringe will actually look like the wing fringe it has always been. First isolate it, then starve it to death.

user-pic

Besides being a crock of shit, the whole Ayers attack is sexist. They constantly refer to Obama palling around with Bill Ayers "and his wife." Back in the day, Bernadine Dohrn's radical credentials and reputation were every bit as solid as those of her husband. But to the McCain campaign, she is just a wife.
