Another Lie: Palin Falsely Claimed Biden Supported McCain's Iraq Policies Until This Campaign

One of Sarah Palin's key claims at the debate last night -- one that has gone largely unremarked on --was her assertion that Joe Biden strongly supported John McCain's Iraq policies, and opposed those of Barack Obama, until this campaign got underway.

We took a look at the record, and found that this claim is, like so many others, a near-complete falsehood.

In the debate, Palin said:

And you had supported John McCain's military strategies pretty adamantly until this race and you had opposed very adamantly Barack Obama's military strategy, including cutting off funding for the troops that attempt all through the primary.

And I watched those debates, so I remember what those were all about.

The claim that Biden supported McCain's policies "pretty adamantly until this is race" is essentially a lie, and the record proves it.

The most recent example we can find of Biden being vocally supportive of McCain's Iraq policies was four years ago. That was when he agreed with McCain's call for more troops in an exchange with McCain on Meet The Press on May 16, 2004:

McCain: We have to increase U.S. troop strength to do the jobs that's necessary.

Biden: I agree.

It's true that Biden did vote to authorize the war back in 2002, and did agree with McCain about more troops in 2004. But from then on, Biden strongly differed with McCain about Iraq on a number of occasions.

In November 2005, Biden voted voted for the Levin Amendment, which called for a phased redeployment out of Iraq. John McCain voted No.

Then. as the surge policy was being rolled out in late 2006 and early 2007, Biden became one of its most vocal opponents. Biden's position was that a surge of forces would have helped years earlier, but by this point, he said, it was too late for a surge to repair the fundamental political fractures in Iraq.

On occasion at that time, Biden even criticized McCain directly on the surge. On October 19, 2006, Biden appeared on CNN and blasted McCain for not giving sufficient support earlier to the position that we needed more troops back in 2004:

Yes, I am saying it's too late. And you may recall, I'm the first person to call for a major increases in forces in Iraq four years ago, and John McCain, maybe on your program it was, said I was sounding hysterical.

On December 3, 2006, Biden appeared on Fox News Sunday and criticized McCain again:

And we've have passed the point, though, where we could put in the number of forces that could fundamentally change things. I called for that 2 1/2 years ago, to add 100,000 forces. My friend John McCain and others who are calling for it now said I was being hysterical. We had a chance to stabilize then. We don't have it now without a political solution.

Appearing on CNN's American Morning on December 26, 2006, Biden rebutted McCain's position:

Miles O'Brien: And then listen to Senator McCain not too long ago.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

John McCain: I'd like to say that I believe conditions have improved. Certainly in Baghdad they have not. I believe that there is still a compelling reason to have an increase in troops here in Baghdad and in Anbar province in order to bring the sectarian violence under control.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

O'Brien: Do you see compelling reasons for a surge in troops?

Biden: Well, no I don't. I think there's a compelling reason for a political settlement. I think my friends -- I've been there seven times as well into Baghdad, as recently as this summer. And the time has passed for additional troops. If we had 100,000 troops to put in there three years ago, things would be very different. And if we had listened to the generals three years ago they'd be different. We should listen to the generals now, Miles. The generals say we don't need more troops. It's not going to work. We've tried it already. We surged this summer.

And during the presidential primaries, Biden called out McCain for exaggerating the success of the surge. From November 26, 2007:

"Yesterday's attempt by John McCain and Rudy Giuliani to defend the Bush-Cheney troop surge in Iraq totally misses the point -- and is misleading to the American people. Security in Iraq is better, thanks in no small measure to our troops. But there is no evidence -- none -- that the surge is succeeding in achieving its stated objective: to allow Iraqis to come together politically," Biden said in the statement.

Basically the only evidence the GOP can point to of Biden favoring McCain's position and opposing Obama's is that Biden voted in the spring of 2007 for the war-funding bill that didn't include a timetable, and then criticized Dems like Obama who had voted against it.

But that doesn't change the fact that Biden still favored a timetable as a policy, and only voted with McCain because Biden doesn't vote against troop-funding bills on principle. And even then, this was after McCain had voted against a funding bill that did include a timetable. In an overall sense, he opposed McCain's views as too little and too late.

In short, Biden agreed with McCain four years ago, and the two broke apart on the long-term plan for Iraq beginning in 2005, and continued drifting further and further apart from then on. Meanwhile, within the Senate, Biden and Obama's policies on Iraq have been virtually identical, with the exception of only a handful of votes and public statements -- and both have been near-polar opposites of McCain.

Eric's post doesn't mention the word "victory" once.

Patraeus doesn't mention the word "victory" either. But hey, he's only the "greatest of the greatest of the greatest in a long line of the greatest of the greatest of generals even better than Ike!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

The other part of the lie, you know, is "And I watched those debates, so I remember." This is a woman who has said just months ago that she didn't really think much about Iraq even when her own son was about to be deployed. If she watched those debates, it was in debate camp three days ago.

She watched the debates while she was sitting around the kitchen table at her kid's soccer game.

...cleaning her moose rifle while looking at Russia.

Nice work, Eric. I was wondering about this. Didn't seem right at the time. But hey, whatever gets her through the night...

http://pufferfish.typepad.com/

I'm not 100% sure, but I think Sarah Palin was hitting on me last night.

user-pic

LOL!

Well duh - what wasn't a lie, Eric? Here's a new game - somebody come up with something she's said that wasn't a lie -

user-pic

Slag off! She was winking at me!

I'm betting there were a lot of repugs fantasizing about the gov last night.

Fogu 2 probably made good use of his Photoshop skills.

user-pic

I didn't know that one could operate Photoshop one-handed...hmmm

user-pic

My take on her is that she was chosen as the McCain Spokes model. I think she'd best serve the campaign if she wore a bikini and go-go danced behind McCain while he spoke at rallies. She could maybe even do a Laugh-In bit and body paint McCain slogans on her body like: "Bomb Iran", "Privatize Health care", etc.

Yeah, put her in a cage up above him.

You do realize she's given birth to 5 children, right? Better put her in a one piece instead of a bikini, unless you like stretchmarks.

And yeah, I'm a great big ol' hypocrite because I was one of the chicks whining about the sexist treatment Hillary got. But dammit, Palin deserves it. She's nothing but a token.

user-pic

I think you and winky make a great pair - your eye patch just seems to be the perfect accessory for her - after Trig, of course - which is her signature accessory.

She drags that kid around like a fucking Hermes birkin bag -

Here's a question:

where is Mrs. Palin's wedding ring?

I'm surprised her lies are even headlines any more.

user-pic

Can we just call them Mega Liars and be done with it?

I'm working on the "Sarah-When-Pigs-Fly-Palin" right now!

user-pic

Here's my vision: a blue sky background, a foreground filled with winged pigs in lipstick and Palin with wings flying among them.

user-pic

It has to say: Thanks, but no thanks, to those wings to nowhere!

user-pic

Don't forget to include a dollar sign on each ear!

user-pic

Earmark earrings - dangly.

No one else seems to be bothered by her earrings, but they are so inappropriate - they drive me nuts. You don't wear dangly fucking earrings when you are a professional.

And how 'bout those red 5 inch heels : : :

I guess it depends on what your profession is.

Did anyone notice if she carried off a blackberry in her hand as she left the podium? She, by golly, kept looking down and scrambling her thoughts like she was reading text messsages. Someone should look at the end of the debate and check that out? it would be so mavericky of her to cheat while she is winking away at us.

user-pic

Aha! I think I just read a comment below someone posted last night on this -

that might have been you -

user-pic

If that's as well as she can do by cheating, then she is one sorry VAMP. Liar. Cheater. Hypocrite.

Karma is waiting... in Alaska.

Just got a chance to get to the computer now, after watching the debate last night.

I felt soiled after watching her "performance". Like I'd had 30 points of IQ ripped off my brain. She was so inane. My daughter almost heaved when she winked at the camera.

I really felt for Joe Biden, it's almost like I could see him tensing up, thinking "I want to tell her but she's full of shit, but I can't... I want to... oh I want to... must not..." I really loved how Joe backed her into a corner on domestic partners.

WHAT ARE THE REPUBLICANS THINKING! THEY WANT TO TRUST THE FATE OF THE REPUBLIC TO THE LIKES OF HER??

Sorry for shouting. I feel better now.

Lipstick on a pit bull, that's about the only thing she's gotten right.

user-pic

My dearest CT - I hope like everything you feel like I do this morning - my tension is gone and all I can see, taste, feel and smell is victory. We've done it, CT, we've elected Barack Obama and Joe Biden. Of course they helped. ;)

I'm not CT, Tena, different cat avatar (catatar?), but I'll accept the compliment... ;-)

And same to you and everyone who's worked & given & lobbied coworkers.

I still won't rest until the first Tuesday in November, tho. Then I will enjoy a long-awaited bourbon-induced brain haze, and giggle as I watch Republicans across the country getting stomped. It will be the perfect bookend to my first election in 1980.

user-pic

Sorry - I just looked at the avatar. Too many tuxedo kitty avatars!

LOL!

It is reported in the French news that a Palin look alike is a porn star. The look-alike was hired by Hulster Video, producer is Larry Flint. The ad to find the right actress was run just after the end of the Republican convention...The actress will get $3000...

LOL

user-pic

Here's a link attesting to that for ya!

Please, Tena,

Chai-Zeus Cleist! Leave the poor woman alone with the "Hermes bag" references and the like, willya?

She doesn't get the Greek mythology references. How rude you are!

There's never been a satisfactory way to do this online, but:

Pbthbthbthbthbththththth!!!!!!!!

My personal favorite:

BIDEN: The fact of the matter is, the policy of this administration has been an abject failure.

And speaking of freedom being on the march, the only thing on the march is Iran. It's closer to a bomb. Its proxies now have a major stake in Lebanon, as well as in the Gaza Strip with Hamas.

We will change this policy with thoughtful, real, live diplomacy that understands that you must back Israel in letting them negotiate, support their negotiation, and stand with them, not insist on policies like this administration has.

IFILL: Has this administration's policy been an abject failure, as the senator says, Governor?

PALIN: No, I do not believe that it has been. ...

There have been huge blunders in the war. There have been huge blunders throughout this administration, as there are with every administration.

But for a ticket that wants to talk about change and looking into the future, there's just too much finger-pointing backwards to ever make us believe that that's where you're going.

Positive change is coming, though. Reform of government is coming. We'll learn from the past mistakes in this administration and other administrations.

And we're going to forge ahead with putting government back on the side of the people and making sure that our country comes first, putting obsessive partisanship aside.

That's what John McCain has been known for in all these years. He has been the maverick. He has ruffled feathers.

If Bush always followed the advice of the Generals "on the ground", and we have the greatest of the greatest of the greatest Generals in a long line of the greatest of the greatest of the greatest Generals even better than Ike, HOW ON EARTH DID WE HAVE BLUNDERS? WHY DOES SARAH PALID HATE OUR TROOPS AND HATE AMERICA?

Oh, and could you get any bigger a flag pin than hers? Why is McStain the ONLY candidate without a flag pin in the debates? Is he a pinko commie liberal?

user-pic

It kills me the extent to which McLame has been able to sell that Mavericky thing when he's probably been mavericky on the GOP twice in his entire career.

Oh, that "maverick" thingy is just a darn cute little label that doesn't have any of that, y'know, boring old substance stuff on it. But, by golly, that's good enough for the hockey moms and soccer moms and joe sixpacks, I betcha!

Yes, but did you watch the debate on CNN? The voter tracking graph would dip everytime she said "maverick". That was something to behold!

Being a "maverick" is like having a good sense of humor or great taste -- if you have to keep reminding everyone it's true all the time, IT'S NOT TRUE.

user-pic

O my God - you are so so so right!

It's like the teenage boy who constantly brags about his sexual exploits - chances are he's a premature ejaculator.

;)

This debate will, much like the first Presidential debate, get much worse for Palin as the post-mortem of the video progresses.

user-pic

It sure will. I'm loving it.

I hates her and I've said this all along, but every single woman I know hates her. I mean hates her. Bitterly - if they thought they were going to peel off Hillary supporter with HER? What an insult to Hillary and to her supporters.

Her fizzy/dizzy Suzy Cheerleader act is enough to drive anyone of either gender to fantasize about wrapping her in duct tape (starting with her mouth) and leaving her stranded on Denali.

I waded over to wingnuttia to sample some of their observations of the debate and Michele Malkin takes the cake.

Her rationale that Palin won? I quote directly..."Sarah Palin is the real deal. Five weeks on the campaign trail, thrust onto the national stage, she rocked tonight’s debate.

She was warm, fresh, funny, confident, energetic, personable, relentless, and on message"

Ok, does this sound like someone who should be vice president, or the next guest host on "The View"?

Wingnuts are seriously talking up the notion that Palin not knowing jack shit about government and policy as a plus for her! What in the freakin hell is wrong with people in this country?

user-pic

Michelle "I am not a racist" Malkin is the most pathetic excuse for a "pundit" or whatever you want to call it - ever.

I hate her worse than Ann Coulter because Malkin is just so goddamned racists and self-hating as a result.

She's completely deluded. Completely.

She and Coulter and the rest are going to fade into total obscurity.

You can take that to the bank. Rush Limbaugh's days are numbered, too.

100% agreed. Soon, no one will be listening. But more to the point: Rush/Malkin/Coulter are used to having their words direct politics, which in the case the criminal presidency, is the same as policy.

No such purcahse will soon be available, and the "fun" will come out of it, reducing these people to the cranks of the opinion pages that they are.

warm, fresh, funny, confident, energetic, personable, relentless, and on message

See, these are Beauty Pageant words! Palin's defenders offer up no more substance than their idol does. They NEVER say "Sarah made a great point when she said, "..." There's no content. Whatsoever.

I would love to see Sarah on The View. Whoopi Goldberg and Joy Behar would rip her to shreds. They wouldn't have to hold back like Joe did.

"Say it isn't so, Joe." That just about made me puke. You could tell she'd been waiting the whole debate to work that line in. As if he's never heard it before.

I don't like the title of this headline. How can Palin be lying when she knows no better. While Tina Fey may actually need to do a bit of her own writing this week, the debate answers and her eloquent speach at the convention WERE NOT HER WORDS.

I don't want to sound so in the dem tank, but could someone find out what her views are?

Better story lines are "Another Lie: Bush Speech Writers and Randy Schuneman Falsely Claimed Biden Supported McCain's Iraq Policies Until This Campaign"

is what the story title should be. Or even

"Another Inch: Pinochios' Nose Grew as Ventriliquests from the McCain Team Made Their Puppet Falsely Claim that Biden Supported McCain's Iraq Policies Until This Campaign"

I am certain someone somewhere has already said it but I haven't heard it clarified by Obama or Biden, and i gotta get it off my chest:

The surge is not a strategy. If it were a strategy and such a great success as McNuts claims then we would not be there. We would have won. So it's a tactic. As a tactic, it has had limited success but cannot be sustained without a number of other fundamental shifts in the overall war. In isolation, it is at best a temporary fix.

Sad fact about the surge that McCain refuses to acknowledge is that if it weren't for the ethnic cleansing that started before it began, his surge wold not have been the great success it turned out to be. It would take the air out of his argument.

was anybody else reminded of the snl skit with phil hartman as the caveman lawyer when palin got into that bit of 'see joe, i'm a washington outsider, i dont understand how blah blah blah'? i kept thinking of hartman saying 'you see, i'm just a caveman. i dont know anything about law, these bright lights scare me..'

In my opinion(lowly as it is) one of the main reasons the violence in Iraq is down is there are so few people to kill! So many have died that no one even has a good count.
Palin drove me nuts last night and when she said she wanted to have more authority in Congress my head spun around and almost came off. NO WAY NO WAY!!!

The third or fourth time that Palin used the word "maverick" in the debate, she apparently felt that she had to really emphasize the word, to counter its diminishing effect from overuse.

So she bleated it out like a sheep: "MAAAAAAAAAAVERICK!"

That was the second time I guffawed, the other one being her clumsy, mechanical, groaningly phony rendition of her scripted "white flag of surrender" line.

Did anyone notice when Gov. Palin referred to McCain's bipartisan that she mentioned 3 Republicans and Joe Lieberman? Lieberman doesn't count as a "Independent" since he is so clearly Republican the way he is always in McCain's shadow.

So does this prove that McCain is clearly partisan? Really, Palin is dragging McCain down with comments like that.

I really hope Americans would fact check everything both sides are saying...especially with liars like McCaim/Palin.
