Al Qaeda Leader Calls For Humiliation Of Republicans -- Trying To Help McCain Win?
Everyone has wanted to know when or whether Al Qaeda would try to swing the Presidential election. Well, we now may have our answer:
An al Qaeda leader has called for President George W. Bush and the Republicans to be "humiliated", without endorsing any party in the upcoming U.S. presidential election, according to a video posted on the Internet."O God, humiliate Bush and his party, O Lord of the Worlds, degrade and defy him," Abu Yahya al-Libi said at the end of sermon marking the Muslim feast of Eid al-Fitr, in a video posted on the Internet.
Libi, one of the top al Qaeda commanders believed to be living in Afghanistan or Pakistan, called for God's wrath to be brought against Bush equating him with past tyrants in history.
Hmmm. Looks like McCain didn't get the coveted Bin Laden boost yet, so for now he'll have to settle for this far more obscure figure.
Seriously, if the Repubs grab on to this, as seems likely, there's plenty of material for Dems to be ready with push-back. There's plenty of evidence, from people who know what they're taking about, that Al Qaeda prefers pro-war Republican rule in America and that saying such stuff could be designed to help McCain win.
Remember that journalist Ron Suskind reported that CIA analysts concluded that Bin Laden had released a tape of himself on the eve of the 2004 election in order to help Bush stay in power, partly because his presidency made such a handy recruiting tool.
Even better, counter-terrorism expert Richard Clarke recently surmised that Al Qaeda might try to swing the election to McCain, perhaps with a terror attack, or with some kind of videotaped remarks. Looks like one Al Qaeda leader may now be proving Clarke right.
Late Update: I forgot the best part -- the other day the news broke that Al Qaeda supporters on Websites affilitated with the group said they were actively pulling for McCain to win.

The Dems just have to say that Al Qaeda endorses McCain.

I know that it's conventional wisdom that the bin Laden tape surfacing 5 days before the election helped swing it in Bush's direction, but when I look at the polling numbers from RealClearPolitics, it's not clear at all that that tape had any effect.
As for this tape? Who knows? It's listed in red on Drudge, but there's no huge blaring headline or siren, which tells me even Drudge must suspect that it's not going to do much.

They only have an effect because the Republicans use them. It's so weird that 'terrorists' is a word that they claim to hate so much, but is word that let them gain so much power after 9/11. It's like a drug user who claims to both hate and love heroin.

Yup! The Obama campaign team has got to be the coolest, most level-headed, "we've anticipated that" political team of all time. Just think how the Obama administration will handle emergencies - cool, calm, collected.
The only team I remember being nearly as good as this team is the San Francisco 49ers when they played Miami at Stanford Stadium in the 1985 Superbowl. Bill Walsh calling the plays, Joe Montana at QB, and Ronnie Lott as Minister of Defense. A joy to watch!!! So will be the Barack Obama/Joe Biden administration!!!

And don't forget the McCain campaign's reasoning after the al-Qaeda message board semi-endorsement
They said that they were trying reverse-psychology. So then the question is, what is this? More reverse psychology? The fact that this "denouncement" of the Republicans is public while the announcement of "support" was on a password-protected site might be a point of argument that they would, in fact, rather have a Republican in office. Denounce publically just like they did with Bush, but say privately that they'd prefer McCain win.

I'll explain it. The endorsement for McCain "and you should read the endorsement too, it's devastating" comes from an Al Qaeda member on a pw protected website that wasn't intended for as a public bulletin for consumption. The endorsement of the the destruction of the republican party was a public endorsement by an Al Qaeda LEADER meant for public consumption.
The endorsement of McCain from the Qaeda member came about a week ago, while the endorsement from the LEADER came a day or two ago.
What I don't understand is why the Obama campaign hasn't preempted any possible message from Bin Laden by cutting an ad of the Al Qaeda member's devastating endorsement of McCain? Perhaps they have one ready in case Bin Laden makes a video, but still, if Bin Laden's smart, he will do it 3 days before the election this time (so SNL can't do a parody like in '04 which somewhat offset his message) where any Obama response might be minimized. Or maybe Obama is waiting to spring the ad a day or two before they EXPECT Bin Laden might try and sway the election to take up a news cycle and maximize the preemption. I hope the latter is the case.

What's interesting here isn't the resurfacing of Al Qaeda into our elections. It's that instead of endorsing a candidate, they're endorsing a party. The Republican party is in line for historically humiliating defeats this year. And in swoops the Al Qaeda endorsement to say, "Yes America, this is exactly what we WANT you to do. Really..."
Never let it be said that these guys are dumb. They know which party ensures their continued survival and boosts their recruitment.

Which polls?
I ask because when I look at the national tracking polls like, say, Rasmussen, that every one was freaking out and gnashing their teeth over yesterday, Obama's lead increased to 5 today. When I look at the Gallup tracking poll of traditional voters (which created much dismay as well), his lead has widened to five. In Zogby, to 7. HotDog? Who knows? Drudge is no longer posting the gap.
If you're looking at the Fox poll, well, as has been commented on ad nauseum, there are some bizarre party numbers in that poll.
I'm not saying that the relentless negative campaign hasn't had an effect, though. Obama's favorability ratings (tracked by RCP) keep going up.

Sometimes I wonder if Republicans aren't allies with Al Qaida which explains why we haven't gone after them for the 9/11 attack. This statement is suspiciously too convenient for the Republican party. I can actually visualize Rove calling over there and saying, "release the statement." That man would make a deal with the devil to keep Republicans in power, and to keep the myth of his genius alive.
Now is when the choice of Biden as the VP candidate becomes important. Obama is ready for this.
October 30, 2008 3:28 PM | Reply | Permalink
I'm not a conspiracy theorist but it's also clear that each of them serves an incredibly useful purpose for the other. Bush needed the fear of al Qaeda to ram through his agenda, and al Qaeda needed Bush to help them recruit terrorists. I don't think Rove's on the phone to them or anything, but it's clearly a symbiotic relationship.
And, yes, Biden should be out front on this now.

I've always questioned the authenticity and the time relevance of the Bin Laden videos and those alleged to come from Al Qaeda.
According to the Reuters article, these comments were referring, "albeit indirectly", to the U.S. elections.
Whenever these video or audio recordings come out, there are always these little disclaimers, or non-specific dates, sometimes complete mistranslations.
Remember that video in January of Iranian speedboats vowing to "blow up" an approaching U.S. Navy destroyer in the Strait of Hormuz?
The one they ucharacteristically released to the American public via NYT and other media outlets?
It was not authentic after all.

Al Qaeda are sick, crazy and, yes, evil, but they're not stupid. They know there will be a backlash in the U.S. against anything they say. So what they are doing is transparently obvious: trying to help McShame. And it's equally obvious why they'd want him to win -- because, like Bush, he'd be the best recruiter they could possibly have.
They are also trying to show they're relevant and can impact a U.S. election.

As it turns out, Abu Yahya al-Libi is not fake-Arabic for "Abu the Ya-ya Liberal", but is a real person. The Wikipedia entry on al-Libi includes a list of the dozens of videos he has put out, averaging about one per month of the past few years. Chances are, the tapes legit. When they show up in Drudge first, that's highly suspect, but Reuters is a reputable news source. No doubt Reuters is in a different league of credibility than Drudge.
But the newswires, including AP, have been used as propaganda channels, perhaps more transparently over the last eight years.
The networks are credible but then, the Pentagon successfully deployed a legion of generals to talk up the Iraq war.
I don't underestimate the danger of some of these Al Qaeda leaders.
But I also don't underestimate the danger of some of our own leaders.

Bin Laden and Al Qaeda are important political tools in the repug bag of tricks. As long as anything they say can instill fear, it moves people to believe repugs are the only one's capable of handling their threat, they serve their purpose.
Keep in mind, as long as they can make idle threats without the necessary means to carry them out, but get us to jump thru hoops at imaginary scenarios that might occur but are never mentioned, we victimize ourselves for no cause or reason.
The problem is not Bin Laden and Al Qaeda. It's what was famously once said in the Pogo comic strip...We've met the enemy and he is us.

Hello all. I'm a lurker who seldom posts. I think one aspect of AQ's motives have been missed in the discussion. It is patently clear that they intend this to help the Republicans. But I think the motive is more complex than simple "recruitment." OBL has more sophisticated understanding of economics than many seem willing credit him with. He was a successful international construction magnate, a multi-millionaire, and has some understanding of international finance.
He has said repeatedly that one of his main goals is so weaken the US economy that it is unable to interfere in the Islamic world. He saw the devastating economic impact of the Soviet-Afghan war; indeed he credits that for the collapse of the Soviet Union a few years later. I think he wants the Republicans to win because he believes that continuing their economic and political policies will lead to a more rapid collapse of the US economic strength and thereby diminish its military strength as well.
I could be wrong. But I think AQ's reasoning is more complex than bleeding us Iraq and enriching their recruitment. Those are fringe benefits. He's a twisted motherfucker, but OBL thinks strategically.
