A Night At The Congressional Races

Here's tonight's run-down of the Congressional races:

Bachmann Separates Herself From Bush, Both Physically And Figuratively
Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN), who famously hugged President Bush at his 2007 State of the Union and didn't seem to want to let go, is now making some distance between herself and the unpopular president. At a debate earlier today, Bachmann boasted that she opposed Bush on the Wall St. bailout, and attacked her Democratic opponent El Tinklenberg: "He is more line with President Bush's policies than I am."

Smith Airs Another Ad With Wyden, Obama and Kennedy
Sen. Gordon Smith (R-OR), whose ads have connected him to liberal icons like Ted Kennedy and Barack Obama as he seeks re-election this blue state, has yet another ad using video footage of Ron Wyden, his Democratic co-Senator, praising him and appearing to endorse him:

Wyden previously called on Smith to can the first ad that pulled this trick, because it incorporated Wyden's signature to really make it look like Wyden was for Smith. Now Smith has met Wyden halfway -- he's dropped the signature, but kept the video.

Palm Beach Post: Mahoney Should Quit, GOPer Should Win
The Palm Beach Post, which had previously endorsed Rep. Tim Mahoney (D-FL) for re-election, has now withdrawn its endorsement in the midst of his sex scandal: "The Post no longer can support U.S. Rep. Tim Mahoney, D-Palm Beach Gardens, and recommends that he withdraw and that voters choose [Republican nominee] Tom Rooney."

Disabled Veteran Endorses Tom Udall In New Ad
This new ad from Senate candidate Tom Udall (D-NM), who is running away ahead in the polls for this open GOP-held seat, features a disabled veteran speaking, through a computer voice, about Tom Udall's work on behalf of people like him:

"Thank you," Army Sgt. Erik Schel mouths out, with no voice to say it aloud.

Poll: Oregon Senate Race A Tie
The new Rasmussen poll in Oregon shows the Senate race between Sen. Gordon Smith (R) and Dem candidate Jeff Merkley to be a 47%-47% tie. Merkley is hoping for Barack Obama's expected big win in Oregon to help him get over the finish line -- and Smith, too, is aggressively tying himself to Obama.

Poll: Freshman Dem Way Ahead In Rematch
A new SurveyUSA poll shows freshman Rep. John Yarmuth (D-KY), who narrowly defeated then-Rep. Anne Northup (R) in a big upset in 2006, beating Northup in their rematch this year. The numbers: Yarmuth 57%, Northup 41%.

Video: Schaffer Complains About Not Being Allowed Notes At Debate
The DSCC is circulating this video of Senate candidate Bob Schaffer (R-CO) complaining to reporters before a debate about the rules not allowing him to use notes that he'd brought with him. Schaffer clearly did not realize he was being recorded, and that this video could get out there:

Aw, whatsamatter, Bob, haven't you already memorized your talking points for easy regurgitation like every other Republican?

Gordon Smith is such a snake.

Not only does he run the ads with Wyden after Wyden asked him to stop, but he has ads up proclaiming making himself out to be "gay-friendly" (using Matthew Shepherd) when he, in fact, was HUGE in helping the anti-gay Measure 36 get passed here two years ago.

He's on-board with bush from the minute bush gets into office, campaigning with him here in '04, but as soon as Congress goes Democratic in '06 he stands up and denounces the war--and, by association, bush.

He's "anti-illegal immigrant"--but doesn't have much to say about it now that it's been revealed he's been employing illegal immigrants at his pea-packing plant in Eastern Oregon.

Gordon Smith. He just blows with the prevailing wind. Did I mention he's a snake?

I want so badly to see the last video but it's no longer available. Alternative link, anyone?

The ad is playing 24/7 here in Oregon. God I hate Gordon Smith.
