A Night At The Congressional Races

Here's tonight's run-down on the Congressional races:

GOP Pulls Out Of Only Possible Senate Pick-Up
The NRSC is pulling out of the Louisiana Senate race, which had been the only real opportunity for the GOP to pick up a Senate seat from the Democrats this year -- they are now playing 100% on defense. A Republican source confirmed to Election Central that their ads will be pulled.

Safe GOP Congressman Uses Jeremiah Wright In Attack Ad
Here's a new attack ad from Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA), remidning voters in this deep-red district that his opponent supports Barack Obama -- who in turn has an agenda shaped by Jeremiah Wright:

The odd thing here is that Scalise is considered an absolutely safe bet for re-election, even by the standards of a Democratic wave that many observers are expecting this year. Which means that he either knows something the rest of us don't, and thinks he could be in serious danger -- or he's just a bully.

Sali Heckles His Opponent's Staffer During Interview
Rep. Bill Sali (R-ID) and his staff were caught loudly heckling a top staffer for Democratic challenger Walt Minnick while the staffer was speaking to a reporter. "Look, I think that the Minnick campaign needs to take an approach like we have," Sali then told the reporter. "I wish they would be a little more light hearted instead of so mean spirited."

New Dem Ad Goes After Chambliss
The national Democrats are clearly taking the Georgia Senate race very seriously, the DSCC is going on the air against GOP Sen. Saxby Chambliss, who was once thought to be absolutely safe. This ad attacks Chambliss for favoring a new national sales tax:

"Saxby economics, something we can't afford," the announcer says. Of course, it should be noted that sales-tax proponents argue that their system should totally replace the existing federal tax structure, and not be a new 23% tax added on top of it.

Chambliss Goes On The Attack
Meanwhile, Chambliss is recognizing the threat posed by Democratic challenger Jim Martin, who now trails by only a couple points in the latest polls, and has this new ad attacking Martin and the national Dems:

"Democrats control Congress, and our economy is in trouble," the announcer says, proceeding to pin blame for everything from gas prices to the economic crisis on the Dems. "And these same liberal Democrats are supporting Jim Martin."

Franken Out-Raises Coleman, But Still Trails In Total Cash
Al Franken out-raised Sen. Norm Coleman (R-MN) between August 21 and the end of September, with $3 million for Franken to $1.6 million for Coleman. However, Coleman still retains an advantage on cash on hand: Coleman has just short of $4 million, ahead of Franken's $2.8 million.

Dole Outpaces Hagan In Money Race
Sen. Elizabeth Dole (R-NC) kept up her big fundraising advantage over Democratic challenger Kay Hagan in the third quarter. Dole raised $3.1 million and has $1.7 million left on hand, compared to Hagan's $2.6 million for the quarter and $900,000 on hand.

My money's on the bully part.

I think I'm half and half - I do think he's probably scared and that makes him a scared bully.

{ bullies } ⊆ { assholes }

Maybe he's just annoyed that McCain won't bring up Wright, so he figured he'd do it himself.

My guess is this might be a trial balloon of sorts. Run a focus tested Wright negative ad in a safe red district and see how react. From there, see if Wright is a viable issue for an 11th hour ad blitz in other red districts where Republican seats are in more danger.

One thing that I dont get is no one mentions that Wright gave up his college draft deferment and joined the Marines in 1962. I think that would be a good visual to counter his negative image.
