A Night At The Congressional Races

Here's tonight's run-down on the Congressional races:

Franken Ad: GOP Ads Lie About Me Being Angry
Al Franken, who has taken the lead in the latest polls of the Minnesota Senate race, has this new one-minute TV ad, showing in detail how a Republican attack ad has twisted around footage of him doing a humorous impersonation of the late Sen. Paul Wellstone in order to make Franken look manic and angry:

"Look familiar?" the announcer says. "That's right. Ads for Norm Coleman use this footage of Al Franken telling this story about Paul Wellstone and his son and try to make is seem like he was angry. Minnesota deserves better."

Polls: Dems Ahead In Alaska's Congressional Races
A new poll from Alaska pollster Ivan Moore shows Sen. Ted Stevens (R) and Rep. Don Young (R), both tainted by scandal, trailing their Democratic opponents. Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich (D) leads Stevens 49%-45%, and former state Rep. Ethan Berkowitz has a wider lead of 51%-42% over Don Young.

Business Group Tells Kentucky Women Voters: Lunsford Supports Unions And Discrimination
In another sign of just how seriously the GOP is taking the possibility that Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (KY) could lose re-election, the pro-GOP business group Employee Freedom Action Committee has a new mailer lambasting Democratic candidate Bruce Lunsford, urging women voters to support him. The reason: "Big Labor bosses have a history of corruption and sexual discrimination, and Bruce Lunsford supports their radical agenda.

Poll: Chambliss Up By Three
A new Strategic Vision (R) poll of Georgia gives Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R) a 47%-44% lead over Democratic candidate Jim Martin, within the ±3% margin of error. Chambliss once seemed absolutely safe in this red state, but the economic crisis has drastically reduced his support and given him only a narrow lead over the Dem in the most recent polls.

Poll: Dems Could Pick Up New York House Seat
A new Research 2000 poll shows Rep. Randy Kuhl (R-NY) trailing Democrat Eric Massa 49%-42%, corroborating a SurveyUSA poll from earlier this week that showed Massa ahead. Kuhl narrowly defeated Massa back in 2006, and the Democrat never really stopped running -- and he might just win this time.

New Merkley Ad Features Wyden
Senate candidate Jeff Merkley (D-OR) has this new ad in his bid to unseat GOP Sen. Gordon Smith. This new ad feature the state's other Senator, Democrat Ron Wyden:

Wyden's involvement in an ad for Merkley is a big deal for two reasons: One, he is quite popular and could possibly be a Senator-For-Life barring some unforeseen scandal. And second, Wyden and Smith were very friendly in years past, and had a sort of non-aggression pact with each other -- so Wyden's move to campaign against Smith is a sign that the gloves have really come off in this race.

GOP Candidate Calls For Lie Detectors At Debate
Former Rep. Mike Sodrel (R-IN) and his local Republican organization are calling for the candidates at an upcoming debate to hook themselves up to lie detectors. Neither Rep. Baron Hill (D), who defeated Sodrel in 2006, nor the local university sponsoring the debate are agreeing to do this.

You have to be fucking kidding me. That's like a political stunt out of the 30s.

maybe everyone could take lsd + sodium pentothal cocktails as well! sounds like my kind of party! loser gets E.S.T.!

Brilliant! I'd pay money to see that debate, especially if it was Obama/McCain. Better yet, Biden/Palin.

Mike Sodrel has tried to unseat Baron Hill every two years since 2002. He was successful once (by less than 1500 votes) in 2004.

Really sore (and clueless) loser.

Coleman's ads have been the worst I've ever seen in Minnesota. Coleman had 3 reasonable arguments to use against Franken: too liberal, too inexperienced, and too many years away from Minnesota. Instead, he chose a campaign of wildly distorted personal attacks. Coleman is pond scum.

Excellent job, Al. Also reminds voters that Wellstone held the same Senate seat now up for grabs, and shows how low its current holder is.

So many Minnesotans say "I may not have liked Wellstone's politics, but I love that he had the guts to say what he thought." Methinks Norm will not measure up to that bar of honesty this time.

really like the franken spot.

That spot is perfect. Completely takes Coleman's commercial and destroys it.

Al Franken waited until this year to run against Coleman, to avenge the death of his dear friend Paul Wellstone. Next to President, this is the race I want us to win the most.

Me too ... just to see Bill O'Reilly's head explode.

The University should allow Sodrel to hook his own arse to a lie detector . . . then ask him a bunch questions that he has no choice to answer falsely . . . then when the needles don't move everyone will know him for the sociopath he is . . .

I saw the Franken ad on TV right before I came back to the computer, and I first it felt like a Franken ad, but then I thought Coleman was using another film clip against him. I knew the story Franken is telling because I've heard him tell it at DFL events, so I thought Coleman wanted to make Franken look overly aggressive and partisan. My wife and I both dropped our jaws when the film stopped and they showed the same film twisted for a Coleman commercial. Bloody brilliant. I've been hoping Franken would react to the polls showing the negative attacks are bouncing back on Coleman and stop making his own, and just go positive or play defense. This was a marvelous defense ad.

Now, please Democrats, take advantage of anger over the bailout and make an issue out of renters being evicted from foreclosed buildings despite being paid up on their, and in some cases with no notice other than the sheriff showing up at the door to carry out their belongings. The Cook County sheriff has shown the way.

Attended the Chamblis/Martin...Marshall/Goddard debates last night at the Georgia National Fairgrounds...Martin supporters had to be bussed in from Atlanta since none exist outside loop, and Marshall's running ads on talk radio that say "even Rush Limbaugh and Gordon Liddy have good things to say about Jim Marshall." If that's not the sign of a blue dog in distress I don't know what is.
