A Night At The Congressional Races

Here's tonight's run-down of the Congressional races: Dems are continuing to hammer the Republicans on the economy, as the GOP faces some more bad poll numbers.

GOP Rep: I Wouldn't Have Picked Palin
Rep. Mark Kirk (R-IL) told the Chicago Tribune, "Quite frankly, I don't know" whether Sarah Palin is qualified to be president. In a very frank admission, Kirk added, "I would have picked someone different." As the Tribune noted, Kirk was initially a vocal supporter of Palin's nomination when it was first announced. Dem Ad: Coleman's Attacks Against Franken Are Ridiculous
The DSCC has this funny ad out, mocking the GOP's attacks against Al Franken:

"Al Franken sank this ship! Crashed these trains! And he hates puppies!" the announcer says. There is one problem, though: This ad is reminiscent of the humorous "Steele hates puppies" ad from the 2006 Maryland Senate race -- and Michael Steele lost by ten points.

GOP House Campaign Hits Young Veteran Dem Candidate For Not Having Wife And Kids
Minnesota state Senator Geoff Michel (R), speaking at a press conference for state Rep. Erik Paulsen's campaign for an open GOP-held seat, made this criticism of Democratic candidate Ashwin Madia: "Raising a family in the district, sending your kids to the public school, owning a home, working in the 3rd District, paying property taxes in the 3rd District. Erik Paulsen has done all these things. And Ashwin Madia has not." Madia is a 30-year old veteran of the Iraq War.

New Hampshire Senate Candidates Debate The Economy
Sen. John Sununu (R-NH) and Dem candidate Jeanne Shaheen held their first debate of the cycle earlier today, and the economic crisis was a big topic. Sununu, who trails in the polls, defended his economic record by saying he has sponsored legislation to reform Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. But Shaheen fired back that Sununu has backed the whole Bush economic agenda, and thus can't get out of his share of the responsibility for the current panic.

Poll: GOPer Wicker Narrowly Ahead In Mississippi Senate Race
A new Rasmussen poll in Mississippi finds appointed Sen. Roger Wicker (R) with a narrow lead of 49%-47% over former Gov. Ronnie Musgrove (D), within the ±4.5% margin of error, down from Wicker's 52%-43% lead five weeks ago. If the Dems were to win the Senate race in this deep-red state it would be a very big event indeed -- and it would mean we're in the kind of political environment where they might just get to 60 seats.

Another Dem Ad Targets Social Security Privatization
The DCCC is keeping up the assault on Republicans over Social Security and the Wall St. crisis, reminding voters what the GOP's proposals on privatization would mean in the middle of a market crash. This ad targets Sydney Hay, the GOP nominee for seat of retiring Rep. Rick Renzi (R-AZ):

"And we have another loser," a casino worker is heard saying, as Social Security dollars are lost at a craps table.

Dem Ad: GOP Candidate Personally Ships Jobs Overseas
The DCCC has this ad against Brett Guthrie, the Republican candidate for an open GOP-held seat in Kentucky, featuring some audio of him personally describing how his company's products get shipped to Mexico for further assembly, then back to America to be completed:

The Guthrie campaign and the NRCC had previously called for another Dem ad on this subject to be pulled from the air on the grounds that it was false. So the Dems have just upped the ante with audio of Guthrie himself.

I LOVE the puppy ad. It's hilarious. Some of Ned Lamont's ads prior to the primary were of the same variety, and I think they helped.

I also love those Missisippi numbers. 60 seats might not be so crazy. And if that happens? Goodbye Joe Lieberman. The Democratic caucus has some lovely parting gifts for you. Not.

Thanks for doing these posts, Eric. They're informative.

Shoot, we only need one or two more to give Lieberman the boot and still hold the majority. He's history.

user-pic

The thought of Joe Lieberman NOT caucusing with the Democrats next year is so pleasant.

Let us pray....

New Poll from NYTimes/CBS has Obama 9 points over mcShame. And bush at 22%!

user-pic

Since the Times is in the tank for Obama, this poll is obviously an outlier.

user-pic

What about CBS?

user-pic

Well everyone knows how Couric was biding her time so she could "ambush" Palin with such gotcha questions as "What do you read?".

user-pic

Not only that, but this is the same CBS that savaged W four years ago with those (reasonably documented) claims about his National Guard service. No matter that the producer is no longer there, or that Dan Rather left, CBS is still in the tank for Kerry.

Or something.

user-pic

Or no matter that the substance of the charges was true.

user-pic

Coulda been worse. Coulda been "Can you read?"

God I wish Franken and Coleman would do a debate. It seems really strange that they haven't really had a debate yet; especially being this close to the election. I remember how foolish Coleman looked when he went up against Wellstone.

Man Franken would destroy Coleman with a few well placed jokes.

But Steele was a Republican in Maryland, and Franken is a Democrat in Minnesota. Not quite the same thing.

So Madia was imperiling his life by protecting and defending Paulsen's hellspawn and Paulsen has the stupidity to point this out.

I believe that Paulsen just wrote Madia's next ad . . .

user-pic

Unfortunately, I live in the 3rd district and I don't think Madia's chances are very good. Not because Paulsen is viewed as the next Ramstad, but rather that the district is so gerrymandered (basically cresent shaped that encompasses well-off suburbs). There are blocks of us who are trying desperately to get Dem representation, but I feel the deck may be too stacked against him.

Guthrie: Not a job-shipper . . . Just another bragidocious lying of shit . . . Oops! He's both . . .

Mark Kirk (R-IL-10) is typically backpedaling on his support for Palin. He is two-faced on almost every issue. Part of the Republican leadership machine in the House (assistant whip), he tries to sell himself here as an "independent". (I guess being mavericky is all the rage now.)

Meanwhile Freedom's Watch is pounding Kirk's opponent, Dan Seals, with unfair ads saying that Dan Seals's tax plan (as if he has his own tax plan) "could bring back the marriage penalty" and "could lead to higher taxes on small businesses". (I wish I could send you video of the ad -- I suppose it's the typical crap you see everywhere.)

The DCCC was supposed to be supporting Seals this year. He ran a very close race in 2006, basically without any support from the DCCC (managed at the time by fellow Illinoisian Rham Emanuel). I actually feel less optimistic about Dan's chances this time around, despite the fact there should be a large anti-Republican sentiment out there. Maybe the district will surprise me.

Too bad the DCCC is wasting money in KY-2 to support racist, misogynist non-Democrat David Boswell. You know, the guy who said he wouldn't support Nancy Pelosi for speaker, right after she announced her support for him?

Boswell, who has refused numerous times to so much as acknowledge who the Democratic Presidential Nominee IS, much less endorse him?

The bluest of Blue Dogs is Barney Frank compared to David Boswell.

Meanwhile, Real Democrat and Mitch McConnell Nemesis Heather Ryan in KY-1 is struggling to raise money against total waste of oxygen Ed Whitfield.

DCCC: too fucking stupid.

McCain's McMansion is for sale

The mansion includes:

10 fireplaces (in the desert, mind you)
13 bedrooms
14.5 bathrooms
13,000 square feet
a wine tasting room
an air conditioned playhouse for the kids
6 car garage
an extra second garage
surrounding the poll 3 ramadas with full size bars
22 flat screen tvs

And don't forget, this is only one of McCain's 12 homes. I especially like McCain's office that sure looks awfully similar to the Oval Office. Seriously, what kind of man designs his office to look like the Oval Office?

Eric, there's two big differences between Al Franken and Michael Steele: Michael Steele's puppy ad sucked hard and didn't even try for humor. Also, Michael Steele was going to lose that race no matter what, since his base constituency was hard right conservatives living in a blue state.

Finally, some truth from R-Ill. She is not qualified to be president.
