A Day At The Congressional Races

Here's today's run-down on the Congressional races:

Bachmann Rolls Out Attack Ads Against Tinklenberg -- With Fake Citations
Michele Bachmann has unleashed a new wave of attack ads against El Tinklenberg, the relatively-conservative Democrat who has taken a narrow lead in the polls in the wake of her disastrous appearance on Hardball. Here's one of them, alleging that he broke the law and rigged contracts when he was the state's commissioner of transportation:

Meanwhile, Minnesota Public Radio says the facts contradict Bachmann's claims, right down to the claim that the Minneapolis Star-Tribune said Tinklenberg broke the law: "But the stories did not claim Tinklenberg broke the law." Furthermore, a 2003 report from the state's legislative auditor, which looked into the bidding processes of several government agencies, never mentioned Tinklenberg himself or alleged any crimes.

CQ: Dems Poised For Historic Second Wave
CQ's latest House race ratings show the Democrats headed for a historic second consecutive wave election, with double-digit gains in the House. If the 25 races currently rated as toss-ups are split evenly between the two parties -- an essentially neutral and cautious assumption -- the Dems would have an overall net gain of 18 or 19 seats, for a total of 254 or 255 seats.

Two New Polls Have Good News For Franken
After two polls that came out over the last few days showing Al Franken running behind Sen. Norm Coleman (R-MN), two new polls this morning have him up. From the University of Minnesota: Franken 41%, Coleman 37%, and Independence Party candidate Dean Barkley at 17%, with a ±4.6% margin of error. And from Public Policy Polling (D): Franken 45%, Coleman 40%, and Barkley 14%, with a ±3% margin of error.

Coleman: Franken's Attacks Are Ridiculous
Meanwhile, Coleman has rolled out a negative ad against Franken -- contradicting his early pledge to run only positive ads. With this one, though, he's found his loophole in that he's calling out Franken's attacks as false and then rebutting them:

"Those last-minute attacks on Norm are getting pretty ridiculous," the announcer says, as a slide is shown on screen denouncing "Franken's Negative Ads."

Two More Polls Show Dole Trailing Hagan
A new poll from North Carolina-based Civitas (R) shows Sen. Elizabeth Dole (R-NC) trailing Dem challenger Kay Hagan 45%-43%, with a ±4.2% margin of error. And a new Elon University poll shows Hagan ahead 44%-37%, with a ±3.5% margin of error.

Poll: GOP On Track To Hold Open Seat
A new SurveyUSA poll in the open seat of Rep. Tom Reynolds (R-NY) gives GOP candidate Chris Lee a hefty lead of 48%-34% over Democrat Alice Kryzan. This race once looked like a top Democratic pickup opportunity, but Kryzan emerged as a relatively unknown and under-funded nominee after the two previous Dem frontrunners destroyed each other with attacks.

Dems Still Promoting Kryzan In Ad
The DCCC doesn't seem too deterred by the bad polling data, though. Here's their new ad in the race, attacking Lee and praising Kryzan:

The Dems might be hoping that Barack Obama's complete dominance of the Northeast could bring Kryzan in on his coattails. But the GOP should still be seen as the favorites to hold the seat.

To quote Mick..."Hey Rock, ya gotta knock their heads in!"

I think the big news on the senate side today is the snowballing scandal around Norm Coleman. He was neck-and-neck with Franken, probably just behind. This should sink his chances for good. It contributes to a taint that had already enveloped him. And with Coleman and McCain both struggling in the state, the outlook for Bachmann turns grimmer than ever.

Personally, I'd love to see the DNC putting more money into helping Jill Morgenthaler in Illinois' 6th Congressional District!

Roskam's the one who beat out Tammy Duckworth in 2006 because the RNC sent Dick Cheney to the IL burbs to campaign for him.

If we were able to give Denny Hastert's old seat to a Democrat, then we sure as hell should be able to to put Morgenthaler into Congress!

Historic 2d wave.

God I love that.

Want to have some fun? Go over to No Quarter and ask them "What's it like to be on the wrong side of history"?

I have a deal for you - you go cull some of the better comments and bring em back.

I don't want to go over there cause it makes me feel icky, but I'd love love love the schadenfreude of reading some of their bullshit.

I know Mr.Kleefeld isn't accusing someone of using "fake citations" after he himself made up a fake racist quote about Sen. Chambliss yeaterday.

The geniuses in the O campaign just got another 25 from me. They're selecting 5 donors to attend the rally - flight and accomodations included. I don't know what they're going to do with all the extra cash they get.

user-pic

How are they selecting them? Damn I wish I'd get picked. I sent him $250 night before last-

user-pic

They're going to do it as a raffle. Someone told me that it was only open to donors of $250 or more, but I can't find any evidence of that on the relevant page on the Obama site.

I just donated $50 that I don't really have last night, but this might get me to donate again.

user-pic

I wasn't going to give anything else, but now that I know the money is going to good use (Arizona!) I'm tempted.

user-pic

Guys, just a reminder: it's the last day we can give to the Obama campaign (Oct. 31) - I just did, don't forget to do it.

user-pic

I meant, for the Nov. FEC report of course - althoug it's an academic distinction at this point. A last blast of cash might make a difference in AZ and ND and NE. AZ, now that would be funny!

17 Oct 2006 // Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) filed an Internal Revenue Service (IRS) complaint against the Living Word Christian Center in Brooklyn Park, MN for violating IRS law by openly endorsing state Senator Michele Bachmann’s candidacy for the U.S. House of Representatives.

Churches, like Living Word Christian Center, are absolutely prohibited from intervening in elections for any public office. This prohibition is a condition of the very favorable tax benefits public charities receive under section 501(c)(3) of the tax code.

RE: Franken vs. Coleman. Here is an intriguing link between RNC,Coleman ,Wasillaq and FLS,the robo call firm.:---------------------------------Why is the Alaska Republican Party sending over $8000 to this address in Minnesota in the spring of 2006 ? "Generic Party Fundraising?" What's at this address ?

http://www.sourcewatch.org/...

"570 Asbury Street, 201, St Paul MN 55104" = FLS= the address of Tony Feather, political director of Bush's 2000 campaign, and Tom Synhorst of Progress for America DCI Group, which ran the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth against John Kerry.

Meanwhile, Coleman"s Campaign Shared Address with FLS-DCI:

(Senator) Coleman's Campaign Shared Two St. Paul Addresses With FLS-DCI. On 1/2/2000, FLS (Feather Larson & Synhorst ) was registered with the Minnesota Secretary of State's office, listing its address 570 Asbury Street, Suite 201, St. Paul, MN 55104. On 4/13/2003, Coleman For Senate 02 filed a quarterly FEC report with the address of 570 Asbury Street, Suite 201 A, St. Paul, MN 55104.

Coleman used printed documents sent by mail to the FEC instead of electronic filings in 2006 , which means easily searching his database of hundreds of pages of payment disbursements is akin to mushing huskies from Anchorage to Nome during a whiteout.

Now, if the Republican Party of Alaska is using the swiftboat group, via Senator Norm Coleman's "rent" money, and the state of Alaska gets its revenues from oil, and therefore the Republican Party of Alaska gets oil money at least indirectly from people's salaries or dividends, can one connect the dots and connect Big Oil with Swiftboating---------daily kos,'08-I will post the link to this diary shortly. Its a doozy.

Dole v. Hagan

Amusing backstory to the Dole attack ad accusing Hagan of palling around with 'godless Americans'. Turns out she's pictured just at the moment they say godless Americans with a bible teacher, divinity student, and family friend (from the Raleigh NC weekly):
