A Day At The Congressional Races
Here's today's run-down of the Congressional races:
Dems Throw Over $12 Million Into House Races
The DCCC launched a massive financial assault on the Republicans yesterday, with over $12.6 million in spending for over 50 races in the latest set of FEC filings. The single biggest expenditure was $643,000 against Rep. Jon Porter (R-NV). Six-figure amounts were spent on an astonishing 40 House races. By contrast, the NRCC only spent $1.07 million in the latest filings.
Poll: Murtha Now In Tight Race
A new Susquehanna poll shows that Jack Murtha could be in trouble in his usually-safe seat in the wake of his public comments about his constituents being racist rednecks. The numbers: Murtha 46%, retired Army Lt. Col. Bill Russell (R) 41%, with a ±4.9% margin of error.
DSCC Pulls Out Of Colorado, Expecting Victory
The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee is pulling out of the Colorado Senate race, where Dem candidate Mark Udall has led Republican nominee Bob Schaffer in all the recent polls. The national party is pulling out because they're confident that they're going to win, and are focusing resources elsewhere.
Musgrave Campaign: The NRCC Pulled Out Because We're Winning!
The campaign of Rep. Marilyn Musgrave (R-CO), who has trailed Democratic challenger Betsy Markey in all the recent public polls, declared that the decision by the NRCC to pull out of the race was in fact a vote of confidence. "This is a clear indication the NRCC believes Marilyn is in s strong position to close this race out with a victory in November," said campaign manager Jason Thielman.
Poll: Franken Up By Six Points In Minnesota
The new University of Wisconsin poll gives Al Franken the lead in the Minnesota Senate race. The numbers: Franken 40%, Sen. Norm Coleman (R) 34%, Independence Party candidate Dean Barkley 15%, with a ±4.2% margin of error. A month ago, Coleman had a 43%-39% lead over Franken in a two-way race.
Poll: Dems On Track To Win Illinois House Seat
A new SurveyUSA poll shows Democrats way ahead in the race to replace retiring Rep. Jerry Weller (R-IL). The numbers: State Sen. Debbie Halvorson (D) 50%, businessman Marty Ozinga (R) 37%, plus Green Party nominee Jason Wallace at nine percent.
Poll: GOP Rep. Reichert Narrowly Behind Dem Challenger
A new SurveyUSA poll shows Rep. Dave Reichert (R-WA) trailing his Democratic opponent, businesswoman Darcy Burner, by a 50%-46% margin with a ±4% margin of error. A month and a half ago, SurveyUSA gave Reichert a 54%-44% lead. Burner narrowly lost to Reichert in 2006 and hasn't stopped running since.
Dem Ad: Reichert For Sheriff!
This new DCCC ad against Rep. Dave Reichert (R-WA) takes an interesting line of attack. It seems to compliment Reichert on his prior job as a sheriff, then goes on to savage him for his performance in Congress:
"For Dave Reichert, sheriff was a good fit," the announcer says. "But in Congress, things fell to pieces."

I'd be happy to see the Dem House majority go down just a wee bit to get rid of that slimeball.

Murtha is a jackass and won't be missed should he lose.

Yep. It is time for old ass redneckracist bred Murtha to go home. America needs new blood, new ideas and fresh talent in the Congress. He is known to back defense spending to the hilt and it is time to send him home before we see more Abramoff activity like we had with Cunningham.

I agree - Time has passed Murtha by and I have to believe that the Republican running against him is the better option for folks in his district.

Yeah! I was just complaining about him a couple of days ago. He's an ethical powderkeg anyway--good riddance.

Ever notice how racists are offended when you call them racists.

OT a little bit.
What's the word on Obama's replacement in the Senate? Is there a clear choice? Rahm Emmanuel?

I have been wondering the very same thing for a few months now. I hope the answer is Lisa Madigan. I fear, however, that Blagojevich, realizing that he has no electoral future, will seize the chance to appoint himself to the Senate. I could also, kind of/sort of, see Emil Jones getting the nod (although his recent retirement makes that slightly less likely). I notice that Giannoulis' name also gets mentioned frequently.

LMAO! I never thought of that, but that is soooo him!

The St Louis metro area being in both IL and MO, our local paper covers politics of both states, and I can tell you that the letters to the editor from democrats concerning Blagojevich would curl your hair. I will be so glad to see him gone, because he is become a laughingstock dragging down the whole party (at least here in the lower midwest). Hopefully if he tries that, someone, somewhere with an eye toward the broader good of the party overall will intervene, but I would not put it past him to try.

I lived in Carbondale for 5 years before moving down to GA. I was there for the dying days of Ryan, Blag's transition and Obama's election...I still wish Mike Ditka had filled in instead of Alan Keyes...

I believe Jesse Jr, is the frontrunner for the seat Obama would vacate if we get enough folks to the polls to vote for him to be our President.

I live in a raural area and consider myself a redneck. Why are people offended by being referred to by that generalization?

On the bright side, here in Idaho's 1st - Pollster now shows Minnick (the democratic candidate) leading Sali. Not much trending data but IMO it's been that way since September. I'm ready to say the dems are very likely to pick this up.

Everyone HATES Sali; he's a complete idiot and an a-hole to boot who just shattered the state party (and sold out Ron Paul's supporters). Minnick is kind of conservative, of the keep-out-of-my-business pro-gun variety, but seems like a really genuine guy. I'll happily trade Murtha for him(especially because I benefit personally).

This is so awesome. 12-1 spending. After years of being underfinanced, it's nice to see it turn around.
One thing we need to keep in mind after the election is that the GOP are going to be looking at all the ways the Dems sucked in money, and look to duplicate it. Things like Obama's online efforts and ActBlue... we are going to see the GOP ramp up their efforts there. Overwhelming advantages like we have this time will likely be leveling over time: smart strategies get copied.

But Murtha's constituents ARE racists and rednecks!! In fact, TPM posted one of the most horrifying videos of the whole campaign just a week or so ago:
http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/archives/238074.php
I feel sorry for Murtha that not only was he forced by politically correct assholes to apologize when he only spoke the truth, but now his opponent is overtaking him. He's done a lot for his people, racist though they may be. And don't forget how courageous he was in speaking out against the war long before anyone else did. He's also a decorated veteran.

SOME of them may well be. But to call them all that is just stupid. I'd also do some searching on Murtha if I were you. Try googling "Murtha ethical violations"--even Muckraker has a pretty fat file.

Oh, I know all about them; I'm from western PA! Murtha's like our own LBJ, but it's not his shady ethics that are making this a tight race, in fact if anything his voters like that about him. He brings federal money into a very depressed part of the state. No, it's the poor schmuck calling a spade a spade, no pun intended.

Murtha isn't going anywhere. Don't buy into the propaganda. Murtha will easily be re-elected. By at least ten points. The media don't like Jack Murtha, so they want to make a race out of a non race. The RNCC aren't even targeting this seat. Sorry to disappoit, but John Patrick Murtha will once again represent Western Pennsylvania.
