A Day At The Congressional Races
Here's today's run-down of the Congressional races:
National House Committees Shell Out Big Money, NRCC Finally In The Game
Both parties' national House committees shelled out big bucks in the newest federal filings. The DCCC spent nearly $4 million in yesterday's FEC filings, with the biggest expenditure going for $450,000 against Rep. Robin "Liberals Hate Real Americans" Hayes (R-NC). The NRCC, which has held on to its much smaller war chest until the home stretch of the campaign, spent $4.1 million, with the biggest payment going for over $450,000 to defend Rep. Dave Reichert (R-WA).
DCCC Going On The Air Against Bachmann
The DCCC will be going on the air against Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN), with this ad attacking her for blaming the financial crisis on too much regulation of Wall St. -- and pointing out how much money she's received from Wall St. interests:
The DCCC has committed to spending $1 million on this race, sensing an opening in the wake of Bachmann's statements on Hardball that the media should investigate Barack Obama and other members of Congress for possible anti-American views, followed by her truly awkward attempts at denying she said it.
Rahm Calls On GOP To Disavow "Anti-America" Comments
Rep. Rahm Emanuel (D-IL), who headed up the DCCC in 2006, has put out a statement condemning comments from Republicans questioning Democrats' patriotism and saying liberals are anti-America. "A party so intent on dividing America is unfit to lead all of America. And so I call on my Republican colleagues to disavow these statements. These statements are not worthy of a great nation and a great institution like the United States Congress."
Dem Chances Go Up In More Districts
CQ has changed its ratings on six House races, with all six shifts going in the Democrats' direction. Most notable are two incumbent Republicans from Florida, Ric Keller and Tom Feeney, who are now tagged as being in "Leans Democratic" races.
Polls: Dems Ahead In Alaska Congressional Races
New polling from Alaska firm Ivan Moore Research gives the Democratic candidates the edge in Alaska's Congressional races, thanks to scandal-plagued GOP incumbents in this deep-red state. In the Senate race, Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich (D) has a 46%-45% edge over GOP Sen. Ted Stevens, within the ±4.4% margin of error. In the House race, Democratic candidate Ethan Berkowitz has a much larger lead over GOP Rep. Don Young, at 51%-43%.
Dem Politician Accuses McConnell Of Lying About Army Discharge
Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell (KY) is being attacked by his state's Democratic Attorney General Greg Stumbo, who is demanding that McConnell release more information about his medical discharge from the Army Reserve during the Vietnam War. "I think he either had a personal issue that they threw him out of the armed services and military or he had a powerful member of his party or somebody get him out," said Stumbo.
New Ad Goes After McConnell's "Clout" With Special Interests
Public Campaign Action Fund is going on the air against Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell (KY), with this ad attacking McConnell for taking contributions from business interests:
"So if McConnell has so much clout, why isn't he using it for us?" the ad asks. The group is spending $390,000 to air the ad in three different media markets in the state.

Bad endorsement for McCain:

Bachmann is now blaming Chris Matthews for putting "anti-American" in her mouth. What a loser.

I didn't pay any attention to the original interview, however, now that she is saying Matthews was putting words in her mouth, I want to see the entire interview, but can't find it - only edited versions.
What I want to know, was the term anti-american a phrase Matthews made up or was he directly quoting her from a previous speech or interview?

Matthews asked her if she believed Obama was anti-American. I don't remember the rest of the interview.

Yeah. I got that part, but what I want to know is, was the term his or was it hers from a previous statement/interview? I suspect it was hers, else why would he use it, but I'd like to have my duckys in-line when I tackle a few real-time repugs and the subject comes up who said what and when.

As I recall, Matthews, after the witch kept saying 'liberal,'asked her what the point was, was liberal somehow equated with anti-American?
She replied that that was the point, liberals are anti american, in her view.
Not quotes, just paraphrasing.

The thing is, I'm not sure this even qualifies for one of Michele Bachmann's greatest hits. Living in her media market, I've had to put up with her for the past decade (in the House, and previously in the Minnesota Legislature).
This is not surprising. She's a rabid fundie homophobic fascist.

Correction:
on further reflection, I realize that I was not quite fair to Michele.
Michele Bachmann is a rabid lying Oral-Roberts-fundie home-schooling intelligent-design lets-nuke-Iran Social-Security-privatizing homophobic anti-union fascist.

Does he have a tinker's chance?

It was supposively a close race just before the interview, with El gaining on her. And he hadn't run single tv ad prior to this incident.

And didn't she throw a "nutty" over Disney's Aladin or some such thing as being witchery and therefore, refused to make it available in libraries? She is absolutely nuts, and Minnesota knows better, vote the "witch" out of office!

Touched a screen for Obama last night! Here in UT there aren't restrictions on what voters can wear to the polling places and (admittedly on campus here at the U) the t-shirts were almost 100% Obama. Woo-hoo!

You must be in SLC...it's only 50% mormon from what I remember in 19756. About the only place a non-mormom is tolerated and treated semi-civil.

Yep, SLC. Still about 50% Mo (as long as the legislature isn't in session), although The Church still owns downtown.

Is that statue of BY still next to the Tabernacle on the southside? The one with his back to the church and his hand reaching out across to the bank on the other side the street?

Oh, yeah. About 10 years ago The Church bought (bought!!!!!) the block of Main Street that ran between the Temple and the LDS office building and turned it into a "park", complete with rules about behavior, clothing, language, etc. A couple of years ago a guy was thrown out of the "park" for wearing a t-shirt that referred to the 3.2 beer that they sell here. The Church calls the block their little part of Paris. I call it their little part of Bejing.
But, hey, we can still wear Obama shirts to the polls!! :-)

Wow - you can't do that in Dalllas Co. = they'll pull you out of line and either send you home to change or turn your shirt inside out.
Do not try that in Dallas, please.

I was kinda surprised. I'm wearing my TPM lipstick-on-a-pig t-shirt today with my "I voted early" sticker right smack dab on its nose. Getting lots of grins from folks, too!

Hmmm - maybe Austin doesn't have the ordinances Dallas has - there is no electioneering allowed in Dallas Co. within 100 feet of the entrance of a polling place.
And teeshirts, buttons - all that - are considered electioneering.
I get the reason for the ordinance - it is to prevent people from harassing voters.
October 22, 2008 12:53 PM | Reply | Permalink
yeah, we got that bullshit rule in Kentucky, too, although we've also got contradictory court rulings on it.
My personal experience is that the point is NOT to prevent harassment but to ENABLE partisan poll workers to reject voters of the other party.
Yes, I wore a vote democratic T-shirt with dem buttons all over it to the polls in 2004 - repug poll worker threatened to have me arrested. dem poll worker didn't see any problem with the shirt and buttons, but didn't have the balls to stand up to the nazi.
I refused to leave, but I did cave and put my coat on over the shirt and buttons.
yeah, yeah, pussy, I know.

See, in Dallas Co., the people that partisan pollsters keep turning away don't need tee shirts or buttons to identify themselves.
All they need to do is show up - because there are some precinct chairs in some suburbs who in the past would not let any African Americans vote. Period.
We complained in '04 and we have a wonderful elections administrator in Dallas - he's really good. He took action and I think those precinct chairs are all gone.
Of course they were likely replaced with people with similar attitudes...

So... don't give in to voting for this failed disciple (Bachmann). Vote for the pastor, Al. He sticks to his principles.

What a great slam at McCain re: the "socialist" smear! -
Associated Press
RICHMOND, Va. – Barack Obama brushed aside Republican charges Wednesday that his tax proposals amount to socialism, and said he wants nothing more than to reverse the cuts for wealthy Americans that John McCain opposed when they were enacted.
"Was John McCain a socialist back in 2000," when he opposed President Bush's proposals? Obama asked at a news conference.
"It's not a very plausible argument," he said of the late-campaign allegations launched daily by McCain and Republican running mate Sarah Palin.
...
The Obama campaign e-mailed an excerpt from a McCain statement on the Bush tax cuts in 2001 in which McCain said, "I cannot in good conscience support a tax cut in which so many of the benefits go to the most fortunate among us at the expense of middle class Americans who most need tax relief." The Democratic e-mail also cited a McCain statement from the 2000 campaign that "I really believe, that when you are -- reach a certain level of comfort, there's nothing wrong with paying somewhat more."
Game, set, match, Obama!

The issue of McConnell's service (specifically lack there of) in Nam is a bit of a problem for Lunsford. He also got out, which is why he probably doesn't push it himself.
But the key is to read carefully what's being said to play to the voters:
"I think he either had a personal issue that they threw him out of the armed services and military or he had a powerful member of his party or somebody get him out," [Democratic state Rep. Greg Stumbo] said. "I don't know why you get released from the Army at the height of a war unless you know somebody or unless you did something real bad."
Don't ask don't tell me that Stumbo just went there.
They're getting down and dirty in KY.

Those attacks on McConnell's military service in Kentucky are disgusting and gross. Someone needs to give that Attorney General an ass whopping and tell him that's not how we roll in the Democratic party.
