A Day At The Congressional Races

Coleman: I Won't Say War Was A Mistake, For The Sake Of The Dead
At a debate last night in the Minnesota Senate race, Sen. Norm Coleman (R) reiterated his position that he will not say the Iraq War was as mistake. Coleman put it in very stark terms: "I will not tell the parents of any kid who has died in Iraq that their son died because of a mistake. I simply will not do that."

GOP Poll: Mahoney Way Down
We usually don't cover internal polls, but this one probably deserves some attention. The campaign of House candidate Tom Rooney (R-FL) has put out a poll showing Rooney defeating scandal-plagued Democratic incumbent Tim Mahoney by a whopping 55%-29%. We'll probably see an independent poll of this race soon, and don't be too surprised if it also shows Mahoney losing.

Dem Chances Go Up In Eight House Races
CQ has changed its ratings on eight Midwestern House races, five of them Dem-held and three GOP-held, with all eight shifts going in the Dems' direction. The most notable is Rep. Lee Terry (R-NE), who has recently been openly courting "Obama-Terry" voters in a district that should be a slam dunk for the Republicans -- he's gone from "Republican Favored" to "Leans Republican."

Lunsford Ad: Mitch McConnell Has No Shame
This new ad from Senate candidate Bruce Lunsford (D-KY), who is running a surprisingly strong race against Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell, fires back at a McConnell ad that blamed Lunsford for the death of a veteran who was being treated at a clinic owned by a company where Lunsford served on the board:

"The Herald-Leader reports the charge is not backed up on screen or off with any documentation," the announcer explains. "Does McConnell have no shame? He'll say anything to hide his record."

Musgrave Ad: My Opponent Could Go To Prison
Rep. Marilyn Musgrave (R-CO) has another ad accusing Dem opponent Betsy Markey of manipulating federal contracts to go to her family's business, going so far as to declare that Markey faces up to five years in prison:

The Musgrave campaign has not offered any evidence of their claim, and the federal complaint cited here is one that their own local GOP chairman filed with the government. Instead, they have stated that it's up to Markey to prove that she did not abuse the public trust as a staffer for Sen. Ken Salazar (D-CO).

Dem Ad: Your Congressman Is Being Investigated By The FBI
The DCCC is running this tough ad against Rep. Tom Feeney (R-FL), hoping to use ethics as a wedge issue to defeat a GOP incumbent in a district that voted 56%-44% for George Bush in 2004:

"How effective could my Representative be, if he's being investigated by the FBI," says a woman in the ad. The DCCC is also sending around an internal poll showing their candidate, Suzanne Kosmas, way ahead of Feeney thanks to his ethics scandals. Let's wait and see if it gets any corroboration from independent polling.

Another Poll Shows Close Senate Race In Georgia
A new Research 2000 poll shows Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-GA) with a narrow lead of 47%-45% over Democratic challenger Jim Martin, within the 4% margin of error. The two candidates have similar favorable-unfavorable ratings: Chambliss is at 57%-40%, Martin at 54%-40%.

Poll: Freshman Dem Ahead In GOP-Leaning District
A new SurveyUSA poll gives freshman Rep. Jerry McNerney (D-CA) a 52%-41% lead over Republican challenger Dean Andal. McNerney was elected in an upset in 2006 over long-time GOP incumbent Richard Pombo, in a district that voted 54%-45% for President Bush in 2004.

Mahoney should withdraw and let the Democratic Party put someone else in there because another Democratic still might be able to pull that out.

I am so damn mad at Mahoney. If I can stay faithful to one spouse for 25 years anyone can. ANYONE.

I'm totally out of patience with these guys - if you don't like your wife then divorce her. Don't commit adultery and then run for office from my party.

I have zero tolerance anymore.

user-pic

"Zero tolerance".

Me neither. The terminal arrogance demonstrated by so many politicians is just so plain boring at this point. Did Mahoney think no one was ever going to find out? Did Edwards? Just gimme a break already.

user-pic

Yup. Even worse is his continual lying. He's just drawing out the pain and making it a complete eyesore.

I don't agree that the Dems could pull off the district though, even if Mahoney gets out of the way. This one's done. Bad taste and all.

user-pic

I am with you TenaX on zero tolerance.
The problem is that every since Lewinsky, other politicians feel they can get away with these affairs, if the President could. That act in the oval office without him being thrown out of office sent the message that this behavior would be tolerated.

NOT!!

Throw out all those bums who lack control of their tiddly wink. If you lack the self-discipline to control body appendages then you sure as hell lack the responsibility to run a nation with integrity and ethically acceptable behavior.

Who can forget Nixon's line about what he did may have been unethical but it wasn't immoral?

Let them all these SOB's take their tiddlywink home and go play in their own bathrooms!!

I don't think it's too much to ask, since they ask us for a shitload of money and votes, to expect our politicians to be serious people who are serious about governing and not so serious about junkets and parties and fucking around.

I'm sick of this - the Repugs can have Hot Tub Tom Delay and that whole champaign drinking, whoring your daughter out way of doing bidness.

I don't want us involved in that shit - I want serious people who understand they are working for US.

user-pic

Mahoney is a scumbag and deserves to lose. This one's on Rahm Emanuel and the DCCC, which put their backing and money behind Mahoney over a legit anti-war candidate.

user-pic

Ok I withdraw my spur of the moment idea for him to withdraw. Sounds like he needs to lose.

Goodbye, Mahoney.

user-pic

Yeah. Scratch Tim Mahoney. And I would like to see Murtha gone. Out of there. He's a ticking bomb that I want to see retired and out of the picture. Power makes idiots into idiots sometimes

(sounds like a Yogi Berra: "If you come to a fork in the road, take it.")

user-pic

Yeah, Murtha has always been a ticking bomb - agree.

user-pic

Maybe Mahoney should switch to the Republican party instead? He appears to have the same moral code as John Mccain. No wait, Johnny boy at least makes big money when he cheats!

say the same, say it with shame

Palin/mccain? 2008

user-pic

He already switched from being a Republican in the first place.

user-pic

No wonder we were dycked!! DINO

user-pic

Coleman is refusing to do what most Republicans are refusing to do: admit to themselves that the war was a mistake and that they have a right to be filled with rage at people like Dick Cheney.

user-pic

Norm is a turncoat, he was a Dem before he was a Repub and this nonsense about not telling a mother her son died for a mistake is just as hypocritical as justifying the mistake!

He is trying to hide behind a mother's tears or woman's skirt rather than owning up to his own lack of judgment in voting to go to war.

That is what makes his remarks so noxious.

user-pic

"I will not say it. It's true, but I won't say it."

Coleman is such a creepy looking guy. For some reason Franken seems to be bringing that out in him. Coleman has that weird sort of tiny Nancy Reagan look, like he needs to eat more.

Wow, what's with me and the personal attacks today?

user-pic

"Coleman is such a creepy looking guy."

No kidding:
