A Day At The Congressional Races
Here's today's run-down on the Congressional races:
House Dems Spend Millions In One Day, GOP Way Behind
The DCCC spent a whopping $8.25 million yesterday, according to FEC records, with the vast majority of it being spent on offense in GOP-held districts. By contrast, the NRCC only spent $746,106.17, with most of it coming from an expenditure of over $500,000 to defend Rep. Lincoln Diaz-Balart (R-FL).
Dems Going On The Air In Deep-Red Districts
The DCCC has been feeling bold thanks to strong national poll numbers and a huge cash advantage over the NRCC. The Dems' latest spending shows that they're intervening in some usually GOP districts: Against Rep. John Shadegg (R-AZ), Rep. Mark Souder (R-IN), and Rep. Lee Terry (R-NE). Here's their ad in Souder's district, which voted 68%-31% for George W. Bush in 2004:
"For too long now, Souder has been been looking out for himself," the announcer says. "Hoosiers need to look in a new direction."
Minnesota's Barkley Just As Goofy As Franken And Coleman
It turns out that Dean Barkley, the third-party Senate candidate in Minnesota who has offered himself as an alternative for voters who don't like either Sen. Norm Coleman (R) or Al Franken on the Dem side, is a colorful character in his own right. From a new article in The Hill: "Within moments of sitting down to an interview Friday, Dean Barkley dropped the F-bomb and stated his intention to get drunk that night while preparing for a debate."
New Franken Attack Ad: This Race Is About The Issues
Al Franken is undeterred by Sen. Norm Coleman's (R-MN) declaration that he would stop running negative ads -- though in any case the attack ads have continued from the national GOP. Here's Franken's new ad,w which lays out the attack against Coleman as an important difference on the issues:
"It's Al Franken who will stand up for the middle class -- for a change," the announcer says.
Report: Anti-Tax GOP Candidate Delinquent On Taxes
House candidate Ed Tinsley (R-NM), who has run poorly in the polls for this deep-red district, now has some more problems on his hand. The Albuquerque Journal reports that this anti-tax conservative was cited by the IRS years ago for failure to properly pay taxes at his business, and ultimately paid $65,000 in penalties and interest.
GOP Candidate's Ad: My Opponent Likes Lying
Here's a fun attack ad from House candidate Brett Guthrie (R-KY), who is in a hotly-contested race for an open GOP-held seat against socially-conservative Democrat David Boswell. This ad uses footage of Boswell saying that he didn't like the national Dems' attack ads against Guthrie, but that it was a "fact of life":
"David Boswell thinks dishonesty is acceptable???" Guthrie says indignantly.

Were September figures ever released? I don't recall ever hearing how much Obama brought in in September.
O and I do hope Cheney's procedure is very very dangerous!

Tena - haven't seen the final number, but the leaks are that it's a new record. Cillizza was speculating earlier in the week at $100M+:

$90M+ may be a more reasonable number.

Holy shit!
How deep are the DCCC's coffers to spend that that pace?

That would be the DNC. :)
The DCCC would Rahm Emanuel and Chris Van Hollen baby. Rahm may be a pain in the ass who is more than willing to sell out the Progressive base in his unquenchable lust for Democratic power... but he did do a pretty amazing job in the last cycle of raising funds and spreading them around. That appears to be the case in this cycle as well. Some credit has to go to Howard Dean at the DNC as well. Even if the DNC isn't outpacing the RNC in fundraising, Dean's methods seem to be working well at the DCCC and DSCC.
Schumer heads the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee in this and the last cycle.

Not once has speculation about Obama's fundraising been accurate. There is no reason to believe this has changed.
Those who know, won't say. Those who say, don't know.
BHO's campaign is like Zip Lock baggies -- leak-proof.
We may just have to wait until the 20th - unless there is a negative news cycle that the campaign wants to break before then.

David Boswell in KY-2 is a racist who refuses to even acknowledge that Barack Obama is his party's nominee for the presidency, and an antediluvian misogynist who sponsored a bill in the KY state senate to require women seeking abortions to undergo an invasive shaming procedure and view the ultrasound of the fetus.
David Boswell makes Mitch McConnell seem like Paul Wellstone.
There are superb, REAL Democrats running for Congress in Kentucky - Heather Ryan in KY-1 and Michael Kelley in KY-4 - against complete waste-of-oxygen repug incumbents, but the DCCC and KDP are ignoring them to pour money down the Boswell toilet.
KY-2 voters aren't stupid - they know a wanna-be repug when they see one. The real repug Guthrie is currently 10 points up.
