A Day At The Congressional Races

Here's today's run-down of the Congressional races:

Mahoney's Re-Election Chances Downgraded
In a move that shouldn't really surprise anybody, the pundits are reclassifying Congressman Tim Mahoney's (D-FL) re-election chances in the wake of revelations that he had an affair with a former staffer and allegedly paid over $121,000 in hush money. Stuart Rothenberg has changed the race from from "Toss-UP/Tilt Democratic" to "Pure Toss-Up," and Charlie Cook has shifted it from "Lean Democratic" to "Lean Republican."

Another Poll Shows Al Franken Ahead In Minnesota
The new Quinnipiac poll in Minnesota gives Al Franken a slender lead in the Minnesota Senate race: Franken 38%, Sen. Norm Coleman (R) 36%, and Independence Party candidate Dean Barkley at 18%, with a ±3% margin of error. Quinnipiac's previous poll from three weeks ago gave Coleman a 49%-42% lead in a two-way race, but a lot has happened since then with the economy. It should also be noted that a recent Rasmussen poll did not show Barkley definitively siphoning more votes from one major candidate or the other.

Dem Chances Go Up In Oregon Senate Race
CQ has changed its rating on the Oregon Senate race from "Leans Republican" to "No Clear Favorite," citing Democratic strength in the state and the failure of incumbent Sen. Gordon Smith (R) to post a strong lead in the latest polls. In addition, Pollster.com now classifies the race as leaning Dem in the wake of new poll data that shows Democratic candidate Jeff Merkley ahead.

Poll: Hagan's Lead Shrinks In North Carolina Senate Race
The new numbers from Public Policy Polling (D) show the North Carolina Senate race tightening: Dem candidate Kay Hagan 46%, incumbent Sen. Elizabeth Dole (R) 44%, within the ±2.8% margin of error. The previous poll from a week ago gave Hagan a 49%-40% lead. From the pollster's analysis: "Most of the movement has come among Democratic voters, an indication that conservatives who often cross over to vote Republican in federal elections are perhaps being swayed by Dole's attacks on Hagan."

Poll: GOP Congressman Trailing By Seven
A new Research 2000 poll shows Rep. Phil English (R-PA) trailing Democratic challenger Kathy Dahlkemper by a margin of 48%-41%. This corroborates a SurveyUSA poll from two weeks ago that had Dahlkemper up 49%-45%.

Poll: Mark Udall Well Ahead In Colorado Senate Race
The new Quinnipiac poll gives Senate candidate Mark Udall (D-CO) a 54%-40% lead over Republican candidate Bob Schaffer, in the race for this open GOP-held Senate seat. Colorado used to be a state with a serious Republican lean, but has been trending Democratic in recent years -- and the possible Democratic wave this year is only helping Udall that much more.

Maybe we can excuse Franken for 'Stuart Saves His Family' now . . .

I zero sympathy for Mahoney.

That's just what he gets. I'm fed up with the narcissistic politicians who are so wrapped up in themselves they never consider the public trust for one second as they unzip their flies.

Enough guys - and women - though not one has gotten caught cheating on her spouse that I'm aware of.

I think this country has an immature attitude about sex, but since it does and everyone knows it, I would like very much to get this message to every damn Democrat running and every one of them who is in office now: if you cannot keep your cock in your pocket, fine - just do not run for office from my party. I don't want you.

Agreed. We need good, clean politics down in Florida now more than ever.

Who knows when Jeb will be rearing his head over DC airspace. ;^)

The Bush brand is finished. Over. Kaput.

My main complaint with sexual misconduct that isn't illegal - which the Repugs don't seem to care much about - is that is makes us look like we are not serious people who understand that running a government is serious business.

Clinton fucked everything up so badly - as beloved as he is, he is still the butt of endless jokes and always will be.

I could have skipped that. I'd rather the Democratic Party be the party of people who take their jobs seriously. I'd rather the Repugs be the party of Hot Tub Tom Delay - ya know?

Minnesota is going to be close. If Franken gets in I think he will be able to stay in by putting in the work and emulating Wellstone, but this could go late into the night.

Come on Obama coat tails!

Who is the Republican candidate in FL on the ticket opposite
Mahoney. Can someone give a rundown about what to expect from this republican...can Florida citizen pressure be applied on significance issues before he wins ex facto?
PS What is it with this juvenile sense of infalibility among people who want a life in politics... like we are not going to find out what's in the closet?

The Repub in FL-16 is Tom Rooney, from the family that owns the Pittsburgh Steelers. He had to spend a lot to win a tough primary, but I presume he has more.

While I'm cheered by the news from PA-03 (Erie, Butler) about Dahlkemper maybe pulling the upset, I'm distressed to see the Dem. incumbent in Joe Biden's own Scranton district (PA-11) running behind. What's up with Kanjorski? Even Chris Carney, who represents the more rural PA-10 and only got in two years ago because incumbent Repub Don Sherwood was caught choking his longtime Peruvian mistress (and also in the Abramoff scandal, IIRC), seems safe, so why is Kanjorski the only Dem struggling to keep his seat around there?
