A Day At The Congressional Races

Here's today's run-down of the Congressional races:

Chambliss Spokesperson: "Bomb Obama" Remarks By Supporters "Inappropriate"
Michelle Grasso, the campaign spokesperson for Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-GA), gave Election Central this statement late on Friday in response to reports that a Chambliss supporter yelled "Bomb Obama" at a local Senate debate: "Last night was definitely a rowdy crowd and lots of inappropriate things were said by some people in attendance, Senator Chambliss believes that we must focus on the issues - our economy is hurting and we must focus our energy on helping our citizens who are loosing their jobs, savings, and homes."

DSCC Ad Has Stevens Saying He Might "Serve A Little Time In Jail"
A new DSCC TV ad features the audio of FBI tapes from Sen. Ted Stevens' (R-AK) corruption trial. Stevens says in a worst case scenario he "might have to serve a little time in jail."

"The worst that can happen to us is we run up a bunch of legal fees, and might lose," Stevens is heard saying. "We might have to pay a fine, we might have to serve a little time in jail."

Lieberman Pens Op-Ed Defending Norm Coleman
Joe Lieberman has written a guest op-ed in the Pioneer Press defending Sen. Norm Coleman (R-MN) against Democratic accusations that he failed to provide proper oversight of the Iraq War. "I have had the good fortune to work closely with Norm Coleman over the years," Lieberman writes. "Working in a bipartisan manner, he focused on three important national priorities: fixing weaknesses in America's homeland security; rooting out fraud, waste and abuse in government spending; and bolstering consumer protection. I am proud to report that in each of these areas, real progress has been made."

Dole To Spend Her Own Money On Campaign
In the face of polls showing her trailing in her re-election bid, Sen. Elizabeth Dole (R-NC) has decided to spend some of her own money to boost her campaign. Though she has declined to say how much of her money will go in, both candidates must disclose their financial status to federal election officials before October 16th.

Another Poll Shows Tight Senate Race In Georgia
A new SurveyUSA poll shows Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-GA) with a 46%-43% lead against Dem challenger Jim Martin, within the ±4.3% margin of error, and Libertarian candidate Allen Buckley taking six percent. Chambliss was initially thought of as a safe bet for re-election, but economic issues have suddenly put him in a close race in all the polls.

NRA Endorses Freshman Dem In Swing District
The National Rifle Association has endorsed freshman Rep. Steve Kagen (D-WI), who is facing a hotly-contested rematch against his 2006 GOP opponent in a swing district. The NRA is usually thought of as a pro-Republican group, but a spokesman said the endorsement always goes to an incumbent who has voted for gun rights, regardless of party.

Dole Takes Pity On Jessica Simpson's Singing
We haven't had too many good things to say about Elizabeth Dole, but this deserves attention. Salon reports that Dole was campaigning at a NASCAR race over the weekend, where she happened to hear Jessica Simpson rehearsing the national anthem: "And evidently, Dole had no idea who she was. 'The young lady who is singing was over [there] practicing a minute ago,' Dole said, an expression of pity on her face. 'God bless her heart.'" Thank you, Sen. Dole -- thank you.

I keep trying to tell people about Colin Powell - how did this image of Powell as some sort of liberal-leaning Repug savior get started anyway?

Powell's a useful idiot for Repugs - that's all he is -

user-pic

Sounds like Lieberman's turn to the dark side is almost complete.

user-pic

Yeah he keeps talking like him working with Republicans is somehow "bipartisan". HA! He's as much a repug as any other GOP hardliner...

user-pic

What, a coalition of the GOP and the Connecticut for Lieberman Party doesn't count as bipartisan?

user-pic

No, you fucking old fool - "we" ain't doing shit - YOU are going to jail.

On Colin Powell, he encouraged Bush to take the case for invading Iraq to the UN. Cheney and Rumsfeld didn't want to do that, they wanted to start hostilities with Iraq on September 12, 2001. He comes out of Bush's first term seen as someone who wasn't really in the loop and therefore is perceived as a person who opposed a lot of the unbelievable things that became instantly obvious once the U.S. got to Bagdad. Hindsight is wonderful.

When he was CJCS, he made the case for having an exit strategy before committing troops. Beyond that I don’t know too much more about him.

Now he appears similar to the other neocons that have been marginalized because (1) nothing they advocated worked the way they said and (2) were nevertheless instrumental in propagandizing the big lie that was feed to the American people and led to the invasion of Iraq.

Perhaps Oliver Stone will fill in the gaps.
