A Day At The Congressional Races
Here's today's run-down on the Congressional races:
McConnell Ad Ties Lunsford To Schumer And New York
Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell, who is facing a tough challenge from Democratic businessman Bruce Lunsford, has this incredible ad out tying Lunsford to the New York liberalism of DSCC Chairman Chuck Schumer:
"And this guy wants to put a New Yawk Senadduh in Kentucky," the announcer says, in a hammed-up New York City accent. "Fuggedaboudit."
Gordon Smith: Palin Is A Great Governor For California
Some Republicans have taken to exaggerating Sarah Palin's qualifications, but this is just ridiculous. In a funny verbal slip-up in last night's Senate debate in Oregon, incumbent Republican Gordon Smith referred to Sarah Palin as an effective governor for California:
"I've met Sarah Palin once, she's a lovely person," Smith said. "She's a great governor of California, she's a strong executive."
Dem Chances Go Up In Four Senate Races
CQ has changed its ratings on four Republican-held Senate seats, and all four in the Dems' favor: Sen. Norm Coleman (MN) has gone from "Leans Republican" to "No Clear Favorite"; Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell (KY) has gone from "Republican Favored" to "Leans Republican"; Sen. Saxby Chambliss (GA) has gone from "Republican Favored" to "Leans Republican"; and the open seat of retiring GOP Sen. John Warner (VA) has gone from "Democrat Favored" to "Safe Democratic."
Chambliss Faces Tough Debate
Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-GA), who has suddenly found himself in a heated race for re-election thanks to the economy, was double-teamed by Democrat Jim Martin and Libertarian Allen Buckley at last night's debate. Martin went after Chambliss for standing by and letting the crisis spread, while Buckley hit Chambliss from the right on immigration and called him a "loyal soldier" in George Bush's army.
Musgrave And Opponent Blast Each Other On Ethics At Debate
At a debate yesterday in Colorado's Fourth District, incumbent Rep. Marilyn Musgrave (R) and Dem challenger Betsy Markey essentially called each other corrupt. Markey blasted Musgrave for taking donations from banks and oil companies, while Musgrave repeated her accusation that Markey used her time as an aide to Dem Sen. Ken Salazar to enrich her family's business.
Poll: Dole Still Trailing In North Carolina
The new Rasmussen poll of North Carolina shows Senate candidate Kay Hagan (D) leading incumbent Sen. Elizabeth Dole (R) 49%-44%, with a ±4% margin of error. Dole was once thought to be heavily favored for re-election, but the economic crisis has put her behind Kagan in most current polls.
Poll: GOP Representative Tied Against Dem
A new poll from Michigan pollster Mitchell Research shows Rep. Joe Knollenberg (R) tied 43%-43% against Democratic challenger Gary Peters, with a ±6% margin of error. Knollenberg has been pretty safe since he was first elected in 1992, but only won by a 52%-46% margin back in 2006, and has become a prime Dem target this year.

Sounds like ol' Gordo swallowed the "She's governor of the largest state in the country" hook, line and sinker.

Marilyn Musgrave is Satan. She's the worst sort of Republican--corrupt, war mongering, selectively Christian, mean spirited and stupid. Nothing would give me greater pleasure than seeing her lose. Actually one thing might...

The sad thing is, she isn't even the worst Republican Congresscritter "representing" Colorado.

Which was the bigger gaffe? The "of California" part or the "great governor?"

Does the ad with Schumer strike anyone else as a tad anti-semitic?

There's Texas news, too. Noriega debated Cornyn (and some libertarian) last night, and he did pretty well. Maybe Rick'll keep closing in on "Big Bad" John!

Boy, I hope so. I can't understand why it's even close. Even given the financial differences, Cornyn has been such a Bush loyalist, you would think Noriega would be blowing him out of the water.

Kind of off-topic, but did everyone catch this?? Obama predicted McCain would "Go Hate" late in the campaign.
Greg, this should be an article on your site.

Sorry, I was there, "Chambliss Faces Tough Debate" is wishful thinking. There were about 100 union (rude as hell) members bussed down from Atlanta that booed whenever he started talking but that was the toughest thing he faced all night. He was calm cool and cleand up the floor with Martin and whoever the Libritarian guy, who spent most of the time hawking his book, is.

Damn. I keep getting Musgrove and Merkley confused with those two.

How in the hell is that race in OR even close. Gordon Smith is a complete fuck up and a total Loyal Bushie. He should be 10-15 points down. Are our good neighbors to the north that stupid not to bury him?
Wait... we've elected two *actors* to the Gov's office, once of which we pawned off to the country as Presidential Fodder. And we contributied Tricky Dick to the nation as well.
Okay... maybe our friends to the north aren't the only idiots on the West Coast.

check the face on that drivers license.
in Kentucky, bashing opposition to voter ID laws has a pretty clear message, and the black face on the license really hits it home.

LOL! Now there's an objective review of their debate. NOT! If Wallace thought Chambliss wiped the floor with Martin you can be sure that Martin floored Chambliss. No doubt whatsoever.

Actually, he did. I thought McCain lost both debates too, and said so...objective enough?

Gordon Smith is typically a very good campaigner, even in tough races. During the primaries, Jeff Merkley was horrible--he was unconvincing at best.
Last night, though, the tables were really turned. Merkley has either been practicing hard, or Smith just plain sucked. Smith brought a *ton* of notes with him (legal in this debate), which he tried to read as he was answering...Merkley mostly *made* notes as they spoke. The result was that Merkley stayed on point and Smith looked indecisive.
There were at least two key points when Smith simply either didn't understand or couldn't answer questions, and Merkley just dusted him.
I was, quite frankly, shocked. Smith is usually much more of smooth operator. Last night, he looked like a deer in the headlights.
One more debate to go for them--in much more conservative Medford, OR.

Thanks for the report. I missed the debate, and don't really trust whatever take the "Oregonian" will have. I've really learned this election cycle that nothing beats seeing a debate for yourself.

Check out Kentucky blogger Media Czech at Barefoot and Progressive on how this ad shows just how badly McConnell is fucking up this campaign.
